Lexington, KY 10/27/11

The Avett Brothers were so full of energy, after starting the show with Salina (which was awesome). I loved the setlist, and TAB sounded amazingly good, probably the best sound I have heard at a venue. Joe's cello was especially remarkable, as you could hear him during the whole show. It was so nice to see them play "Sorry Man", "At The Beach", "Salina", and "Perfect Space".

What was surprising to me, is the crowd. Barely any energy, a whole bunch of people were playing with their phones, and most of the people seemed disinterested. I assumed that playing in Lexington, KY, there would have been alot more love for the Avett's, and certainly more than when they played in Huntington, WV last year, but that was NOT the case. The Huntington, WV crowd seemed to be more involved and being smaller in number at least they tried to give them some love.

My party and I had a blast though - section 14, all the way up at the top. You could hear us screaming, shouting, clapping the whole night. It was a great show - I just wish that the band could have been rewarded more for their performance (i.e., more enthusiasm from the crowd).

My first show was last night in Lexington and all I can say is I hope they come to Ohio soon. Amazing performace, so much energy. This wont be my last Avett Brothers show.

mofo5, I agree it was a great show. Highlights for me was Head Full of Doubt, played quite early in the show, the acoustic Murder in the City (Always remember, there is nothing worth sharing like the love that let us share our name) and of course Kick Drum Heart. Their versatility and breadth of styles is truly amazing.

I don't completely agree with the crowd. We were sittin up in Sec. 33 and having a great time jumping around and singing, and the floor seemed to be rocking. There were a lot of phones out, which is a bit annoying. Face it, a lot of people go to concerts not knowing the band at all. I was happy they were able to draw enough fans to justify playing Rupp. My first show, would like to see them in a smaller venue.

To be fair, a lot of people take pictures and video with their phones at shows. Also to call friends during certain songs, friends who can't be there in person.

The floor most certainly was rocking! At least where we were--2nd row down in front of Seth. This was my 3rd show this year and the best yet in my opinion. Heading out for number 4 in Nashville in a while! I actually ended up having 2 different vantage points; my 11 year old started getting a little green around the gills during At the Beach, so to avoid a mess I made my way with him out of the GA section. Got him a cold drink and had a seat up in sec. 16 for the rest of the show. The crowd up there seemed a little less crazy than we were down front, but still seemed to be enjoying the show.

I actually thought the crowd that I saw overall was much more into the music and less into the alcohol than the two previous shows for me (Columbus and Indy). MUCH less constant talking and yelling out at inappropriate times.

Also thought the band seemed like they were having a great time and had alot of interaction with the crowd.

Excellent show! Lots of energy and passion. Thanks for a great time!

Yeah I don't know what you're talking about, the crowd was fabulous, which I think made the Avetts even more energetic.

We were down in the front Joe side and the energy was pretty good. Not the best crowd I've been in, but certainly not the worst. I've been to four Avett shows this month and this one really stands out. Getting Sorry Man and At the Beach actually rivals the Greensboro show. Also, I absolutely loved the venue. Definitely my favorite GA venue thus far. We were some of the crazies who showed up 8 hrs before the show started and it was so nice to be able to run inside to warm up, use the restroom, and get something to eat or drink. Just a really nice set-up all around. The venue staff were some of the best I've encountered as well. It seemed silly at first that they had us all sit down as we came into the venue, but it was so nice to just chill out without everyone trying to push forward. Overall, a wonderful, wonderful show!

This was my first time seeing TAB. The show was amazing and the set list was nearly perfect. I can't wait to see them again, hopefully sometime soon.

anybody got a setlist?

nevermind - just saw it over on "setlists" section... my bad... been a long while since i've been on here

What a wonderful night!!! This was my first TAB concert and will NOT be my last. I was about 5 people back from the stage right in front of Seth and we were rockin it! I had a great crowd around me!!

I was standing right in the front on the far side of the stage. I'm 9 years old my name is Izaac and I love the Avett Brothers, I started going to there shows after Allgood in 2007. This was by far the best show yet! After their show Seth came down and reached out over a speaker grabbed my hand and wrapped a his last pick of the night in my hand ! THANK YOU SETH ! ! !

It was a great show...good energy all around I felt. I definitely agree that the focus at this venue was for the music, and not the alcohol. Loved that, as there are other times and places to get drunk--I came for the show!

Only complaint was the opening act...Jessica Lea Mayfield. I don't understand the interest in her. She opened for them in Columbus a few years ago too, and she was equally awful then. Absolutely no energy, and all the songs sounded the same (slow, whiny, and depressing). I always thought an opening act should get the crowd excited for the main performer--she failed at that. If anything, she just made me want to go drink. Everyone around me was complaining about her. Hope to not have to endure her again.

Avett Brothers were great as usual. Had several issues with the crowd. To the morons in front of my wife and I in section 31 that talked the whole time. Please dont come to a concert to hang out and catch up on old times!! Go outside, chat and laugh and have a great time. Others have paid money and came for the music. We finally had to move. I love people that think they are the only ones in this world! Other than that loved the show as always.

Here are some photos I took at the show if anyone wants to check them out:

TAB at Rupp was my first Avett Brothers show and it was everything I'd hoped for! My boyfriend surprised me with tickets and flowers as a birthday gift in August. I was so excited about the tickets I cried a little!

We live in Lexington, but rarely go to Rupp Arena. As we were walking through the convention center, we stumbled upon the same piano we had sat on and posed for pictures during my senior prom ten years ago! We stopped and took pictures again, and this group of women sitting nearby thought we were nuts making such a fuss over that piano! We were kids back then and to find ourselves at the same piano still giddy and in love with each other was special. *aaawww...

The concert was amazing! We arrived early and were able to secure a great spot front row, right. The one song my boyfriend especially wanted to hear was " Salina ", so we were shocked when they opened with it! I don't know every word to every song, but we happily sang along to " Will You Return ", and my boyfriend sweetly rubbed my neck during the " a pretty little gal, with pretty little curls " line, as he always does when we're riding along listening to that track. " Head Full of Doubt " was incredible.

I think I was standing next to nmckenzie35 and her son Issac. During " Shame ", she hugged and kissed him on the head during the line " I know now what it means to care about somebody other than myself ", which I thought was so touching! I don't have kids but really appreciated the sentiment! He seems like such a good boy! I thought at the end of the show when Seth walked over to our section I was going to get the pick, and if Seth were looking at me he would have seen my bottom lip sticking out! The concert was so great, I'm not broken up about not getting the pick. I'm glad your sweet kid got it!

" Paranoia in B-Flat " was a real treat, as it's one of my top three. I've always got a bit of that one stuck in my head! I had to visit the bathroom after several beers, so I missed " The Once and Future Carpenter ", which I hated but I had to empty my bladder so I could jump and stomp my feet freely without pi**ing myself. Love the chorus line in this one.

" When I Drink " was absolutely beautiful, as was " Murder in the City " and " I and Love and You. " Bravo! Bravo!!

We were delighted to hear " Sorry Man " and giggled the whole song through, as it's as if the song were written just for us. 10 years ago when I was a senior in high school, my boyfriend and I were inseperable, and my mother just despised him. She had my father pi**sed over it, forbid us from seeing each other... tried everything to split us up. He finally won her over, or she acquiesced, once she realised he wasn't going anywhere. " Sorry Man" was such a surprise, thanks so much!!

" Kick Drum Heart " was amazing! It's one of my favorites. The lines " There's nothing like finding gold within the rocks hard and cold, I'm so surprised to find more, always surprised to find more " are special to me because I always thought it said " within the rocks of the cove ". When we spend summers on the lake I love walking the coves looking for geodes and what-have-you. I'm always trucking along, humming and singing this one, yeah-ah-ha-ah! Love, Love it.

One day I'll know all the words to " Indolence " and keep up and sing along. Until then, I'll wink and point at him and shout " Once I got RAAAGING drunk wiiith yoooooou, and hope he's still laughing! Bwahahaha, damned alcohol!

" Perfect Space " was incredible live. This song performed live is worth the trip alone!

The encore " Swept Away," was a delightful end to a great evening. Another song that makes me thankful to have someone so special to spend my days with. <3

I clapped my hands so feverishly that I think I may have stress fractured something in my left hand. Totally worth it! I never thought I would enjoy a group so much that I would desire to see them multiple times a year. I'm hooked. I would live the life of a gypsy and follow them everywhere if it were practical.

I wish we could have seen Bob Crawford play with them, next time, perhaps. I wish his daughter and family the very best.

Joe, I love your blog! I love reading the candid bits and enjoy your brand of humor. You play awesome cello, too. Rockstar!

I love the wildcat TAB tee shirt I got and will wear it proudly. It looks great on me, if I say so myself!

Finally, to those of you bashing the opening act, if you have nothing nice to say, don't say anything at all! I learned that in Kindergarten, and it has served me very well. I wish I had half her courage.

I was the house photographer for the Lexington show and shot quite a few shots of The Avetts, Jessica Lea Mayfield, as well as some shots during their soundcheck. If anyone is interested in checking them out, you can hit the links below...

It was definitely one of the best shows I've seen at Rupp Arena!
