Live Vol III?
I noticed in Knoxville that there were some mic's set up facing the audience. Not sure if this was the case in Asheville or Atlanta. Maybe some of you that were down front for those shows can provide more info on that.
Given this observation, the similarity in setlists at the three shows, and the fact that the performances were pretty much spot on, maybe we can look forward to a new live album in the future?. It may just be wishful thinking, but it would explain why the setlists were so similar. What are your thoughts?

We can always hope...just like we do for The DVD from the Charlotte show...
Well, that is interesting. That could possibly explain the similar set lists.

there's only one thing here worth hoping for
Bob--I had the same exact thought. The mics were there all three nights and at some point during the Atlanta show (during "Go To Sleep", I think) Scott asked Justin/someone at the soundboard to turn up the audience mics. Doing a live CD would certainly explain the similar setlists all three nights because the boys would be trying to get multiple takes of the same songs.

Mary Ellen,
I noticed Scott asking to up the audience mics, too. Oh man, I didn't even think about this. If we were secretly made a part of the recording of a live album, then all is forgiven!
i remember when i attended OCMS there was a big disclaimer that they were filming a live DVD, and that entrance into the theatre was taken as permission.
i doubt its the same as a live CD, but for legal reasons, does the crowd have to be informed that they are taping a live set, like it on the DVD?
i'm crossing my fingers for it!!!!
I'm not saying its not possible and I really hope it's true... but The Avetts have done similar setlists with the releases of each new album, so i don't know if you can use that as the measuring stick.... they tend to play many of the exact same songs off the major album that just came out.... they did it for 4 Thieves Gone and Emotionalism... You couldn't go to a show w/o hearing Die Die Die, Shame, Go to Sleep, or PG from Chile right after Emotionalism was release and the same for Talk In Indolence, Distraction #74, or Left on Laura......
now , I don't believe I've ever seen three shows sound so much alike but that also could be with the fact that they brought Mike Marsh along w/ them and wanted to make sure he got on stage as much as possible and there are only so many songs that he fits in on....
I guess we'll find out sooner than later
also Will - I've been a part of audiences in the past for which there were filming and some DVD's made, but there were never any signs or anything.... I don't know how all of that exactly works out

Well Locust, Mount Pleasant, Concord.... LETS GOOO!
yeah, interesting.
i guess we will just wait and see. but if they are reading this board, you guys know what we all want!!!
a live album would be great,
yeah i remeber hearing them talk in asheville an awful lot about mic volume
I was wondering if the reason they brought the lights up on the audience during certain parts of a few songs was because of a DVD (like the I and love and you fingers), Do you always have to sign a disclaimer? I don't know much about music/film equipment so if y'all are thinking "No idiot, there would be huge cameras everywhere" keep that in mind.

TAB has had those shotgun mic's on the stage since late August when they went to ear pieces instead of monitors. Unless they had monitors on stage during those shows, I'd say that you simply saw the mics that are used for thier ear pieces. That theory would be backed up by Scott asking for more crowd in his ear. If those mics were simply for audio taping there would be no reason for him to ask the board for more. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news...

i heard the same thing about the mics there being for their earpieces in augusta. if they were going to do a live cd again, i'd hope they might give the audience a little heads up so people could refrain from yelling out asinine things during say murder in the city or bella donna.

Like I said, it may just be wishful thinking on my part. Never hurts to dream! Thanks!

"If I were walking through the rain, and I hear you call my name, I would break into a run without a pause."
Yah there's no reason for Scott to ask for more crowd noise, however the similar set lists ARE a good sign, not to mention it's the perfect situation for a live release. It would be in their contract though, whether or not they need another live release to fill their contract.
Battier: I doubt that would mean anything to the people who actually holler during those songs. Would prolly just give more incetive to be loud so they could tell their friends when it's released, "Now listenin' close, you can hear me sound like an idiot between 1:21-1:23." Just saying.

Paige--if that would work, maybe they should just tell people they are taping at every show.
Drew--the thing is, heavy on ILU is one thing, but the NON-ILU songs were so similar.
someone mentioned the live album taping theory to me in Atlanta, based on the similar setlists, but now I can't remember who it was. and it was just a theory.

Wish me luck, I know you think I'll need it.
For all the hardest roads we have to walk alone.
Well it is a lovely theory. Hoping it pans at.
NastyNate - my thoughts exactly re: people screaming out to try to get on the live album.
Jenn--I mentioned it to Rhonda and she passed it along to you, I think. It was definitely just a theory that made me feel better about the similarities in setlists. Could be completely wrong.

granted it would still just be wishful thinking that a few people might hold in their outbursts at inopportune moments, but one can still dream.

yep. those mics were to hear the crowd in their in-ears.

Chilix - yeah i completely agree and see your point.. i just think its a matter of having a a few songs that sound right w/ a full drum kit ( besides I and love and you stuff) and the fact that the band doesn't get a whole lot of time to practice those other songs with Mike..... but thats just my 2 cents....
I guess we'll see how it goes

good point about Mike Marsh--I do like Colorshow and Indolence with him on drums.

i've enjoyed the songs they bring Mike in to play. he adds a good dimension to the band. nice addition IMO (i'll probably get crushed for that from the Avett "purists") to the band.
I thought it felt too heavy with Mike on drums.... too much going on. Tin man in particular. I felt like drums dominated the song to the point it was distracting. That could have been my perspective from where I was standing though. I was about 6 feet from a super loud speaker. I also felt like Scott and Seth were less animated when they weren't driving the songs with the kick drum and cymbals.

"I'm a little nervous 'bout what you'll think when you see me in my swimming trunks."
Bob6973, "the performances were pretty much Spot On"? Maybe some songs were, but man, there were all kinds of technical issues from what I could tell. Yeah, I guess some were executed flawlessly, so I'll give you that. I saw 2 nights worth of Tin Man, and neither of them were spot on unfortunately, and too bad, because it's a great song, amazing lyrics, simple yet profound. Maybe TM is just one of those songs that is never going to be perfect performed live, or it may take several more shows (like KDH anyone?) to get it just right. Live Vol III would be super sweet tho. From NYE to NYD (I can't count Dallas because that setlist was so different (and wow, way better IMO) than the other nights'), did anyone feel that a particular song was Spot On? maybe PiBFM?
EDIT: I totally agree with what jcpegg said ^, didn't read it until just now.
Also, I guess the context of this Live Vol III would pertain more to newer or unreleased stuff, so as far as the I&L&U songs, most of them did go rather smoothly, especially RFoDHFoP and TPS.
@ pcgil - I think you will enjoy this if you haven't already seen it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t9w3AVtp6D4

No I have not seem that, Hel Yeah, niiii-iiiice, thx.
I wish my hair grew as fast as Seth's, but that would be a pain in the ars to deal with a beard growing that fast as well.
Yeah, I definitely get beard envy when I see these guys sporting big ones!

"I'm a little nervous 'bout what you'll think when you see me in my swimming trunks."
PiratesCove - i see your point, but just can't agree.... i guess in your eyes you could call me a "purist," but i just have a hard time really getting into the songs as much with Mike Marsh playing.... I love the raw edge of the Avetts which with each studio release is dwindling away, which is completely fine, b/c thats what they want to do.... I think part of the reason their live performances are so great are becuase of that raw edge / fly-by-the-seat-of- your-pants attitude that they bring... I feel that they lose more of it with Mike Marsh playing.... I just don't like the band as a 5-piece band.... i certainly don't blame anyone else for liking it, b/c i have many friends who really dig it.... I think he's an extremely talented artist, i jsut think he sounds a bit too polished for the sound that I like coming from The Avetts..... i know it doesn't make much since, but thats just the way i see it...
just fyi - i don't wnat this turning into another Mike Marsh thread - b/c we've had plenty of those already

Did you all notice how Mike plays very softly? I hardly even knew he was there, which is fine with me, because I prefer the foot stomping hi hat and kick drum personally. At least the drums are not overwhelming. I assume he is probably instructed to play them lightly, or maybe he just naturally plays light, or the mics are adjusted lower when he's up there, because you can hear a huge difference in the drums volume when Scott or Seth is playing them. It's that way by design it seems. Yeah, a 5-piece would be too many IMO. 3 pieces are my favorite, but I can deal with a 4th who is a sick cello player and such a character, lol.
