Yay for this post, I was going to start one and share my feedback from seeing them last evening. This is my 3rd time taking in The Low Anthem, and I continue to be in awe of their talent and the beautiful sounds that come out both their vocals and instruments. Last night was really special in that they played at the Central Presbyterian Church in Austin, I don't think any venue would better compliment them. I love how they can transition effortlessly from a song like Cage the Songbird and then just get raucous and loud when they go into Cigarettes and Whiskey or the like.
This is night two of their current tour and they are joined by Daniel Lefkowitz. Daniel was in the band briefly towards the beginning. TLA have covered some of his songs. Daniel really is a fantastic songwriter, but brings a different energy to the stage which really isn't for me. Kinda like Robert Hunter and the Grateful Dead, Hunter is talented but I would rather see the fellas sing & play the tunes. I'm not a terribly religious person but I really did enjoy one of his chorus's and hope that I remember this with some accuracy but "...if the world was a wishing well, and we were all pennies and God was a little child... " thought it was a fantastic.
I'm sure that I am not alone in experiencing TLA live for the first time supporting the Avetts (Oklahoma March '10). I was familiar with their OMGCD release but was never really sold on the sound, but, as with many bands seeing them live and discovering how they are creating their music was a big clincher. I am pretty sure you could find any random instrument, hand it to anyone in the band and they could make music with it. I second boneva, their new hearya session is fantastic, also be sure to check out both of their Daytrotter sessions as well. The Daytrotter version of Dreams Can Chase You Down (written by Daniel Lefkowitz) is my song of the moment right now.
Ok off the soapbox for the moment, but if you haven't seen TLA yet, get to it!
Next up Fleet Foxes, and the following week Brandi Carlisle with the Avetts rounding things off on May 20th. This month is off to a terrific start!
Just preordered their split session Daytrotter vinyl yesterday, and despite having already listened to it many times through, I'm pretty excited. Quite talented, emotion evoking folks
One of my all time fav bands. I adore their sound. They are very thought provoking lyricists and amazing musicians. I have seen them a few times too. I even thought once they put on a better performance than the Avetts when they opened for them. Crazy I know to even speak of such things but that was my vibe after the show for sure. I did not think they could out do OMGCD but imo they did with Smart Flesh. I love that album. I would recommend buying the double disc from their website of the new album. The bonus tracks are some of their best imo.
Ooh this makes me psyched. I'm seeing TLA in June. I saw the end of their set at the TAB New Year's show (had a late dinner with friends before going to the civic center) and I was totally into it. I've also seen the videos where they play This God Damn House and use cellphones at the end to mix up the sound--pretty mind blowing.
