Well worth forsaking other Saturday night activities to listen in on the web stream! Ridiculous set!
Agreed. ridiculously amazing.
yardsale, my losing bet. period.

Wish me luck, I know you think I'll need it.
For all the hardest roads we have to walk alone.
i'm so glad yard sale was played, hopefully some day i'll get to see it but hearing it on-line was amazing, and my losing bet, wow, what a set list, can't wait for ann arbor...
Son of a...........................
Pretty Girl from Raleigh = my favorite song. So much meaning behind that song for me. I want to her it so bad
Maybe at my 7th show, they'll play it for once...
That set list is one of the best I've ever seen. Great listening online, but would have loved to have been there.
Yard Sale and MY LOSING BET (oh my god!)
'Nuff said, right?
I can't say it's a fave of mine, but it was really nice to hear PG Raleigh and the version of At The Beach tonight was fun.
Jacob on drums added an interest element to it, and I thought the boys really used the space up on the big theatre stage well. Lights were a bit ramped up, also. No pyrotechnics or crazy business, but just some wider brush strokes (so to speak) to fill up the bigger space without making it feel cheesy or over the top.
I hope many people got to tune in online, and even more so (am I asking too much?), I hope the radio station will offer it for download as well, because it was a great live broadcast (listened to part of it replay on the way home).
My 10-year-old niece enjoyed her first show tonight and though I think she wished she knew more of the words, I saw some foot stomping and hand clapping from her that really made me smile. I'm pretty sure she "gets it."
I avoided the stand up - sit down war and sat through most of the show, fortunately. (sooo wasn't in the mood to fight that, so I went with 'majority rules' tonight). Most of the people (uh, almost ALL) were seated up in the balcony, but we finally got everyone all up near the end. Even my mom! I have a feeling she'll soon be drinking the Avett-aid, too.
All in all, a fun night, and great to meet a few of the Chicago people who came up for the show. Thanks to all who helped make it a special night.
@CoffeeBomb: Sorry I couldn't make the pre-show, I was running a little late and got up there at 7 when then the doors opened. What an amazing show, and I almost couldn't have asked for a better set-list for my first Avett show. It was worth the drive, WELL worth it. Very upbeat and high energy, as I assume all Avett shows are. My favorite "song of the week" is Tin Man, and I jumped out of my skin when I heard those first notes!
And I agree, I hope that the radio stream is offered as a download.
Have fun to all of those going tonight to the HoB!! I've got to get ready to go to the Blackhawks game!
anyone get video of yardsale or my losing bet?

Burn the questions. Burn the shame.
@BeefyD: that "Jumped out of my seat" thing made me laugh. I did the same exact thing when I heard the first note of Colorshow. I literally jumped up and yelled.
An Avett Brothers show is a like a box of chocolates, you never know what you are going to get.
Again today, I am sorry that I am not on the road with Jeff & Rachel!
oh man, what an incredible first show.
definitely worth standing out in the cold for a few hours to manage to be in the front row - despite the drunk a**hole next to me during the majority of the concert. (the guy who kept yelling Providence during The Low Anthem).
i've been waiting for a long time for these guys to play in milwaukee. they even admitted it had been awhile.
and to get this kind of set list from them for my birthday (which is technically today, but whatever). just incredible. and to be able to tell seth that after the show, just - legendary night. happy 2-4 to me.
just. incredible.
edit: i tweeted with the radio (cause i didn't hear the broadcast at all) because i know that they do turn around and offer the downloads from time to time. i have a set of Andrew Bird and a Bon Iver set from them.... but they said it matters on the Avett management and label if we'll get it or not.
I'm really psyched to see they played PG from Raleigh. I'd love to hear that. They probably won't play it two night in a row, though (I'm going to the Chicago HOB show tonight). But who knows?

"Free is not your right to choose, it's answering what's asked of you, to give the love you find until it's gone."
YardSale and My Losing Bet were amazing but 9 songs from I&L&Y. Don't get me wrong, I love the album but it seems like these songs are getting overplayed. The setlists are getting a little predictable with an occasional surprise. Hope tonights show in Chi City will have a little more variety.
I think its very much a possibility that since they haven't played Milw. in quite a while, that they knew there would be a lot of newer fans, and thus threw in a 'I and Love and You'-heavy set. Although I loved hearing Tin Man, I am jealous of those who have gotten "If It's the Beaches". But that's o.k. This was my first Avett experience, but definately not my last.
I really hope they're going to get an approval to put this show up for download. It was a great listen and made me incredibly sad that I won't get to see them on this tour.
How can you make an argument that songs are getting overplayed ? Who the heck is able to go to every show ? You're bored looking at the setlists? Get over it!
This was my second show, and it was amazing--again. These guys have an energy I haven't seen in years. Not to mention some sweetass moves!!! We're so lucky to enjoy their coming of age!!
BUT....at the risk of sounding jaded, I'm wondering if anyone else felt it was too big a venue for the boys. My first show was the Barrymore in Madison, and it was thands down the most intimate show I've ever been to. I felt this was missing at Riverside. I was up in the balcony so I'm sure that had something to do with my reaction. I just seemed so...impersonal? Anyone have any thoughts?
As for the setlist, I'm still WOWed. They played a lot of newer stuff at the October Madison show. It was a pleasant surprise to hear oldies like Colorshow and Yard Sale! And Greatest Sum...are you kidding?!!! Give the boys a lot of props for staying true to their roots!
P.S. Anyone else notice Bob coming into his own as a budding rock star?
Well if they sold out the Riverside, a smaller venue would just serve to deprive more fans of seeing them, so it's a double edged sword.
@Libalaplage I was at that show at the Barrymore in Madison as well, and it used to be #2 in the ranking of Avett shows I've been to - This show last night in Milwaukee definitely displaced it. Yes the venue was huuuuge, and I was in an almost identical spot to where I was at the Barrymore (last row of the balcony both times, I have terrible luck.) but even in such a large room it still seemed every bit as intimate to me. The band gives SO MUCH of themselves to every song and every performance, and the fans give it right back... it didn't really seem like a big deal to me!
Thanks for the input ControlSix. Think I figured it out...NOTHING compares to your first TAB show.
well originally this show was booked in a much much much MUCH smaller venue, but they sold out Turner Hall (who also owns the Riverside and the Pabst) so quickly, and they already had something booked in the Pabst - which is the middle size venue of the three - that they moved it up.... and I think MKE was waiting for The Avetts to show up - unbelievable that they sold that place out. I mean, not, but I am so very pleased. Show seemed super intimate to me, but then again, I was leaning against the stage.
And I for one was happy with the maybe I&L&U heavy set - I could have used a bit more variety from Emotionalism thrown in there and cut a few I&L&U tracks - just as a first time attender - and the fact that I discovered them during Emotionalism - but that's just nostaligia's talk. And with how much love I have for I&L&U it was nice to get a little bombarded with it. Most bands tour really heavy on their newest record for 6-18 months before they go to a more even set - I dunno the details of course on Avetts - but it's true for my other favorite bands.
All I can say is I simply cannot wait to see what Ann Arbor holds!!!
this may be a stupid question, but spare me i'm a newb, how long has scott been singing murder in the city completely by himself? and with the lyrics about his daughter and her mother instead of sister and their mother?
i loved the lyric change, but i missed seth's harmonies. which dunno about you, but for me their harmonies are part of what DEMANDED i became a fan.
I think I've seen Scott do murder in the city more often by himself than with Seth but it goes back and forth. Same for the lyric change. I first heard the 'daughter/her mother' version sometime last year.
--
"I need HEEEEELP!
But I'm on it. I'm on it."
he started changing the lyrics just after his daughter was born. Like David said, sometime last year. It's nice when Seth harmonizes, but it's also nice solo.
this statement is not directed at anyone in particular, so please, no one take offense:
It's easiest to appreciate this band, in my opinion, if you leave your expectations at the door and just appreciate the gift that they give you at each show. They're more than likely customizing their setlists more and more these days to try to appeal to a wider fan base. and the wider that fan base is, the less forgiving the audience, or rather, the more fickle the audience. They must feel that they have to choose their setlist wisely so that they make the maximum impact. let's face it, they have a lot of songs that fans love, but that may turn off a first-time listener that has not experienced the musical enlightenment that we all have. So, a "boring" setlist at a show kind of makes sense to me. A bigger audience, a large majority of which probably came because of I&L&U, wants to hear the newer music. I'm sure TAB wants to retain those fans, and maybe they feel that they need to break them in easy to their older stuff. It may be dissappointing, but it makes sense.
I for one, am glad when they change things up, even if it isn't the way I like it. For example: I love The perfect Space live when Scott runs from keys to drums and back. not so much musically, but visually. it really speaks volumes to their drive to make due with what's at hand and not conforming to typical standards. But damn, when they played it in Ithaca with Jacob on Drums and Scott stayed on Keys, it sure made for a fuller sound and overall better musical presentation. (I can't say the same for SFOS at Milwaukee. That song just plain needs Seth on drums, visually and musically!). But I digress from my point, which is: if they played it or sang it the same every time, it would get stale.
I'm just grateful for every show I get to attend, and anxious for whatever music I may receive.

I get to a ton of concerts each year in Milwaukee and elsewhere (ACL and Lollapalooza included) and have pretty strong opinions on live acts. To me, Wilco and My Morning Jacket are the benchmarks with The Decemberists and Band of Horses close behind. Saw the Avetts for the first time at ACL last year and I've been hooked ever since. The Milwaukee show puts them firmly within those ranks.
I loved the setlist. My wife, who is NOT a concert goer, loved it too, which made the night a hit. The I and Love and You heavy set worked for her! Our whole group was grateful for the first row balcony seats I procured.
I don't know if it's ok to post video, but here goes!

Sound is meh, but hey, it's in HD
thanks for the answers guys! (and girls?) somehow i dunno how i've never seen that on youtube? i get stuck watching the official vid for murder in the city more than live ones i suppose, and my friend who saw them in georgia it was the way i expected it to be. it was a super awesome welcome change, i was just wondering. thanks!
all in all a phenomenal night, and i can't wait to see them again. i need to get my bonnaroo ticket soon.
Caseydog: Thanks for the videos!!! It is awesome to be able to re-live that night, seeing nuances that I missed while there. Now if someone recorded the radio show...
Thanks again!!!
It was such an awesome awesome show. Few more "new ones" to add to my list. Can't wait for my next show!

But their good times come with prices
And I can't believe it when I hear the jokes they make
At anyone's expese except their own
Would they laugh if they knew who paid?
@Addicted I couldn't agree more with your assessment of the setlist. It's one of the MANY things I adore about TAB. To your point about repetitive setlists, I've been to several disappointing shows in the last couple years where the set list was almost identical to the night before and the night before that. I can't imagine wanting that as a fan. I soooo appreciate that they deliver a mixed bag every time. Keep the surprises coming!!!
And thanks for reminding us to drop the expectations...I'll have to work on that next time re: venue.
Libala, I'm slightly confused...
you said:
"To your point about repetitive setlists, I've been to several disappointing shows in the last couple years where the set list was almost identical to the night before and the night before that..."
do you mean several disappointing TAB shows with repetetive setlists, or other bands? I think you mean other bands.
I ask because some people have complained about this from TAB during some recent shows. Which relates to what I was talking about.

Here's one more.
Youtube is not finished processing the HD

Definitely meant other bands. Hence "I soooo appreciate that they [TAB] deliver a mixed bag every time."
Gotcha!
