Minneapolis 3/5/10

Played for just about two hours tonight.. here is the list:

And it Spread
Shame
Slight figure of Speech
Traveling Song
Tear Down the House
Pretty Girl from Annapolis
Doubt/Promise
Roll in my Sweet Baby's Arms (?)
January Wedding
The Perfect Space
I killed Sally's Lover
November Blue
Kick Drum Heart
Laundry Room
Will you Return
Where have all the Average People Gone
In the Curve
Backwards with Time
Go to Sleep
Matrimony

I and Love and You

I can't believe how much older stuff they've been playing at these shows lately! I was really missing songs from Four Thieves Gone tonight... but I feel like 3 tracks from Emotionalism is good compared to what I usually hear from them! Oh well.. I guess it is a delicate balance. I'll be excited to see what gems they dredge out tomorrow in Milwaukee!

The reason you probably only got one song during the encore is because you had a longer main set than most other shows.

As far as " how 'bout a deep track for the people who actually appreciate you and not the band wagon followers who just heard your new album." you did get Matrimony which is pretty rare, and I would die to hear it. Sorry they didn't play Distraction #74 for you.

Matrimony, Backwards With Time, In The Curve, November Blue??

Say no more.

I have rules. Never eat or drink in underwear or pajamas/Scott Avett

I think the encore situation has changed since the early days in smaller venues. The larger venues are ruled much more by the clock. The show MUST be over by _____. The length of the set is a much better measure of the night than the number of encores. I am also guessing that a whole bunch of fans were thrilled to have the evening end with ILU.

Rejoice always, Mark

I can't imagine a long time fan having such a infinitesimal complaint like that. I was in Cleveland and they didn't even play I&l&Y, is that "cliche" enough for ya? I guess you'd be happy if the same setlist were rearranged and 4 songs were place in the encore portion. You got a great show, enjoy it!

I remember when I last saw Springsteen play in Columbia, SC. The set only went about 2 1/2 hours, which for Springsteen is short. Later on, I was reading about the setlist and reviews on either Backstreets.com or some other fan site forum. Someone in the know commented that the reason these huge shows end so soon nowadays isn't because the Boss doesn't have the stamina; it's because the crews are unionized and they have very strict terms as to when the must be done tearing down and out the door. Otherwise, they pay serious overtime.

I don't know if this is the case with the venues TAB is now playing or if it's just a venue rule in general but I suspect that if it were up to the guys, they'd play until 1 a.m.

Still, as others have pointed out, you got a very long set and while the encore itself wasn't as long, the total number of songs was just the same.

Sorry all, a little drunken message board session last night. I agree with you all that it was a great show and those of us who were there were very lucky to have an awsome setlist with a lot of deep tracks. I just can't remember the last time I have been to a show and only one song was played for the encore. I was expecting more, and was disappointed that it was a one and done, as I am sure anyone would be who would gladly watch them play all night. Good points with the length of the set, and the possible restriction of hours for the crew.

Dang... I was thinking that "Roll in my sweet baby's arms" could be a new one by them... Oh well, was still awesome to hear Smiling It's by Flatt & Scruggs.

I too was disappointed with only 1 encore song, especially being I&L&Y, but I understand they gotta push their new album. It's a no brainer, it's bringing in new fans.

I was overjoyed in hearing November Blue, PGfAnnapolis, In the Curve, and that amazing new style of The Traveling Song. Those 4 made the show for me.

Loved it! Loved the old stuff and new songs sound so good live IMO. November /blue made my night. Come back to MN soon and have a pint for me in London!

if you look at most setlists, they are about 20 songs, on average--sometimes 19, sometimes 21, and EVERY once in awhile they go long. you got 21 in Minneapolis. I can imagine that it was a surprise to only get one encore song as that is unusual, but you def. got a (slightly) above average length show.

Poor Avetts--(they) can't make everybody happy all the time. No matter what they do--play I and Love and You, or don't. play a lot of emotionalism or play a lot of Four Thieves, etc etc. And they play a lot of songs from their new album that they are touring to support--crazy, right?? This isn't directed at any one person alone--just an observation of a lot of general, disappointed-sounding posts lately.
