model application
model application
Posted: Friday, March 5, 2010 - 20:16
Hey Guys! I've been curious about this for a few weeks and decided I would finally throw it out there...has anyone (besides me) filled out the model application on scottavett.com? I'm just wondering if anyone has had a response yet. I sent mine in about 2 months ago but haven't heard back yet. The thought of having Scott paint a picture of me just sends chills downy my back! Has anyone done this? LilDeadHead? Chillix? Stirred? Anyone?

Nor have I. Good luck!

Nope. Not really up my alley, but good luck with your quest!

lildeadhead: that pen she uses to keep her setlists? it's a human-finger bone. dipped in the blood of the ones who yell out during "murder in the city". poetic, no?
I did some modeling in college for some of the local artists so I've got a little experience in the area. Right now I'm just hoping that Scott and I have the same tastes in art...judging from his previous work, I think we do. They asked for 3 photographs so I had a photography student friend of mine take some, nothing too risque (the application specifically says "clothed"). I'm curious as to what I would be asked to do for Scott's artwork since a lot of the paintings in his gallery are nudes. I've only done that a handful of times for artists I really respect and Scott would definitely fall into that category.
shoutout to my girlssssss!
I haven't heard beck yet either...fingers crossed!

Addicted, what kind of pics did you send in and when did you apply? My heart literally skips a beat every time I check my mail (electronic or otherwise). Have you modeled before?
Taryn, who are you shouting out to? Did you apply as well?
Addicted happened to have sent me some of those pics and, I must say, he makes for a very intriguing model. Especially in nothing but a Team Avett jersey and a bandanna.
Wowsers!

I'm 99.9% sure that Addicted is joking. but...he is a Scott man....

Yeah, I think we all know the kind of things Addicted finds himself up to behind that tour bus...

Give the love you find until it's gone
stop, you're all making me blush.
I applied over a year ago. I probably haven't heard back because I thought the application specifically asked for "nude" photos...boy, I'm a little embarrassed now. Of course, that explains why Scott ran from me screaming in Ithaca last week. And I thought he was just excited by all of the snow.
eta: reiggin...that's not a bandana. it's a tattoo. and yes, it hurt. a lot.

Addicted, I'm pretty sure that it is your post that just pushed the board posts from 79999 to 80000. I happened to notice and thought how bizarre to catch something like that
off topic, I know
wow. I hope I win something!

where do you even see that, WOT?
and please keep it on topic. we don't like to veer here.

I hope win something too Addicted!
You know, as an early fan, I remember back in da' day when you could just walk in nude to the What-A-Burger, plop yourself down on a stool, and Scott would sketch you there on the spot. Oh, and Bobby always had some talc handy.

"Hell has no fury like a woman; happy, scorned, or otherwise"
First of all, I do have a sense of humor and I can see the humor in Addicted and Reiggin's posts. However, I do feel like the butt of all these jokes and the TAB board is the last place that I would have thought that would happen. As an art enthusiast, I have had my fair share of mocking. I try to take it in stride and will try to do it this time as well. I am a bit disappointed as I thought this was a place I could come to be honest and truthful, expecting the same from you guys.
Art is obviously a major part of the brother's lives. To mock me is to mock them and that is something that I seriously doubt you guys would do.
Modeling is a serious, vital part of the artistic process. You all seem to enjoy the artwork, but not the inspiration.
It always amazes me how the message of their music fails to make a point even to the biggest fans. Honesty, loyalty, respect, trust...
OK, first, let me say, your passion for art and the artistic process is admirable and obvious. Trust me when I say that you are not alone in your appreciation, but your desire to be more involved in the process is unique and I respect your desire to put yourself out there. However, "to mock [you] is to mock [TAB]?" No. Don't take yourself so seriously. Maybe people should be a bit more understanding that some people (especially people they don't know) don't share their sense of humor, but don't equate yourself to the Avetts because you like their art. Calm down.
Here's my take on it, for what it's worth: you singled out people who you don't know (Chillix, LDH, Stirred) by asking them if they had done a model application. I am sure you meant no offense by that. However, it definitely started the thread out on a bizarre note, and I think others just picked up on that, took the ball, ran with it and said some outlandish things. You are hurt by jokes made by folks you don't know - jokes which you reasonably interpret being at your expense. They maybe should have been more sensitive to that, but let me assure you that all of these people have good hearts and mean no harm. Addicted and I are good friends, and every time we are @ a show together, we practically race to see who can make more fun of each other. It's like being in a big family. Maybe it's not your thing, but it is what it is. You don't have to like everyone or even appreciate their sense of humor or view point, and you can certainly air your grievances, but I'd advise against judging or chastising anyone. Because folks made some off the cuff remarks that you're offended by doesn't mean you appreciate the Avetts' art more than them, and it doesn't mean that the commentators understand the music less than you.
I hope you'll come back and get to know people better but can understand if you have a bad taste in your mouth. Either way, have a great day!

Ain't it like most people, I'm no different, we love to talk on things we don't know about.
As an objective observer and non participant, until now ,in this discussion, I just see it as people making jokes for the sake of humor. I don't see it at anyone's expense. I don't see anyone mocking anyone and if you read the litany of the hundreds of posts by the people you mention you will see that they are not the type of people that would purposely be out to embarass anyone. I am sure everyone feels terrible for you and you will be hearing those sentiments.
I thought your initial post was an interesting one. I don't think anyone knew much about the topic and I was curious to learn more about it. I have to admit I did find humor in some of the responses but never thought that someone might be hurt. Now I feel guilty that I laughed at the jokes.
I am sure everyone feels bad that they made you feel offended and apologies and love will be coming your way. Hopefully once you feel the love you will feel better about this episode and continue to bring your persona to this board. The written word is so easily misconstrued and these misinterpretations occur all the time on emails, text messages and message boards. I wouldn't be reading this board if it wasn't a board filled with people with the virtues you mention that the music speaks of.
My mother was a model and the jokes I would hear would make me uncomfrotable so I can relate to how you feel, ohia. The comments would be funny but not when it is your mother. Sometimes it isn't easy being beautiful.

It's answering what's asked of you
To give the love you find until it's gone
Yes actually i did send one and he did reply back. this is what he said word for word
Dear Ben,
I did receive it. thank you very much. I filed the application. As for now I am not accepting any new applicants due to time restraints but may employ applicants in the future.
Thanks again for the interest.
Sincerely
Scott Avett
after seeing this i jumped with joy even though he didnt accept me he still replied.....I still smile every time i read it haha
@Heids - Thank you for the respectful reply, but I have issues with a few of your points. I never meant to equate myself to the brothers. God knows that the we are different people and they have a ton of respectful fans. I will, however, equate my love for art to theirs. Maybe I am wrong, but from everything I have read and seen I think the boys are interested in art in the same ways that I am. In that sense, we are the same. If Scott had come to the board and asked for models I would expect people to respond very positively with very little sarcasm. But when I came asking about the model application set up by Scott himself, I didn't receive the same response.
I did not mean to single anyone out. As a long time reader of the boards, I have noticed that the ladies I mentioned seemed to be strong women as well as super Avett fans. I was looking for some support and fellowship with people I thought were similar to me. Maybe I was wrong. However, the ladies I "singled out" were all very nice with their replies and I take no issue with them.
Like I said, I am a long-term reader of the boards although I have not posted very much. Too many times I have seen a well-intentioned post get hijacked by a few posters looking for a quick laugh. It can be very hurtful when a serious matter is laughed off by the long-time members that know each other and their inside jokes.
@DocMike - Thank you so much for your understanding and post. Don't feel bad for laughing. It is an easy thing to do in certain crowds.
@Ben - When did you send in your application?
I will stick around the boards and hope things get better.
PGOhia,
I'll start off by saying that I'm not in the habit of trying to hurt people's feelings. I'll admit that when I made my first post I realized that I ran the risk of it being taken as you took it, but I rolled the dice and posted anyway. I thought it would be funny if you somehow saw me, or ran into me someday at a show, you'd find the humor in it, and that it's more a joke at my expense than at yours (I'm kind of a tall, skinny, goofball). I'm sorry it went the way it did, and I hope you don't think we're all big jerks because of it. Well...I'm a big jerk sometimes, but I won't speak for anyone else.
You're right on with this statement:
Too many times I have seen a well-intentioned post get hijacked by a few posters looking for a quick laugh. It can be very hurtful when a serious matter is laughed off by the long-time members that know each other and their inside jokes.
but a lot of us know each other well enough that we're comfortable making these jokes, and have even come to expect a few quick laughs from each other. obviously, that's not fair to newcomers like yourself (by that I mean new to posting), but it's how things work in life anyway, I suppose. to every new thing there is a rite of passage. And trust me, I don't know anyone on here that would be intentionally hurtful and everyone I've met has been open, accepting, and super friendly.
I'm sorry if I hurt your feelings.
Jeremy

I modeled for Scott a couple times, and I didn't even apply. I guess it just depends on who your father is.
pgfohia--I'm sorry if your feelings got hurt, that was definitely not my intention, and I'm confident that the other people here, all of whom I've met, other than you or Benjamin (wow, I've met almost all of you--awesome!), most of whom I've spent a LOT of time with, and all of whom I know are great people, didn't intend that either, though I can't speak for them. I also was a bit confused by being singled out at first, but I understand that you were asking people you see on here a lot, so please feel free to throw any other questions my way.
But please know that yes, we were going for cheap laughs that were nothing to do with you--as you yourself said, that has happened many, many times in threads, and I, for one, don't see that as a negative thing. I see it as a great benefit to being a boardmember--getting to know each other and making jokes that build on each other, and also poking fun at each other is all part of the fun. I'm very sorry if you felt either left out or targeted, or this isn't your sense of humor. None of us were mocking art (and therefore the brothers?)--we were mocking each other and the idea of modeling--in truth, in part, probably b/c most of us wouldn't be comfortable even applying. I have no doubt that it would be an amazing and simultaneously terrifying and humiliating experience. in a good way.
You have to admit, the idea of Scott slumming it at the What-A-Burger and sketching people as they come in is pretty funny.
And Jeremy is a tall, skinny, goofy guy, he's not lyin'--hence the humorous image.
Stick around, it does get funnier.

To answer a couple questions:
I'm doing well now Dfrench., but this time of year is very stressful for me as you can probably understand.
And yes, technically I did have two fathers, not that there's anything wrong with that.
Hahahahahahaha, that sign is awesome.

Jesus-tap-dancing-Christ. Controversy and blasphemy all in the same thread!? I hate I neglected checking this one out for so long.
I swear to God, I love some of you to death, but the Avetts have the most sensative - and in some cases petty - fans I've ever dealt with. Don't get me wrong, there's a lot of good folks on here, and I love reading people's b****in' and moanin' and controversy, and even slander from time to time. But geez....
