I really like these Directors' Series DVDs. I have the Michele Gondry and Spike Jonze DVDs and they're fascinating:

Actually, come to think of it, my cheese-dick exboyfriend might have them now but they're still good.

I know I won't be the only one to suggest The Last Waltz featuring The Band, always a favorite. Also love Stop Making Sense featuring the Talking Heads, and I always liked The Kids are Alright featuring The Who, which I also think the aforementioned cheese-dick absconded with.

Ain't it like most people, I'm no different, we love to talk on things we don't know about.

Joe Strummer: The Future is Unwritten

I Am Trying to Break Your Heart : A Film About Wilco by Sam Jones

The Flaming Lips - The Fearless Freaks

Pavement - Slow Motion Century

Once

Control

The Last Waltz

I'm sure there's a lot more that I'm missing, but those are a few classics and recent favorites.

i agree with the last waltz recommendation, can't recommend that one enough, maybe festival express, which is the dead, the band, janis joplin and a couple of other bands touring through canada on a train. it's pretty interesting

The Devil and Daniel Johnston

I agree that The Last Waltz and Stop Making Sense are the all time best.
I would add a few others to my list.
Woodstock (directors cut)
Rolling Stones Gimme Shelter
Concert For George
The Concert for Bangladesh
Music For Montserrat
James Taylor Live at the Beacon

I second "The Devil and Daniel Johnston" while throwing Gillian Welch's "Revelator collection" into the mix.

Of course I agree with The Last Waltz.

If you just want a great concert that will put a smile on your face, then get Bruce Springsteen Live in New York City. This was a concert tour when he reunited with the E Street Band after a long hiatus, back in 1999.

Maybe off topic, but if you want movies with great music references, try High Fidelity.

id like to second the bruce and high fidelity recommendation, which coincidentally has a cameo from bruce

Yeah I'm with Sunday... my two favorite music dvd's are "Concert For Bangladesh" and "The Last Waltz". One of my more recent favorites is "Ashes of American Flags" by Wilco... some great scenes in this one.

If you're looking for a big gift, I'd go for The Beatles Anthology... beautiful stuff.

I also think "I Am Trying to Break Your Heart" is WONDERFUL and even Jeff Tweedy's "Sunken Treasure: Live in the Pacific Northwest."

Daniel Johnston movie is hard to beat for an intriguing look at the troubled cult artist.
I enjoyed The Pixies movie, LoudQuietLoud.
Got my son Nirvana at Reading for Christmas.
The History Channel presented an extremely well-done look at Woodstock. I wonder if it's available to purchase.

"Ronnie and Neil, Ronnie and Neil

Agreed with Daniel Johnson and Electric Apricot.

Try:
"A Mighty Wind"
"Be Here to Love Me: A film about Townes Van Zandt."

Wow...there are so many good ones out there...It depends on your musical taste. "Hated" was interesting, because GG Allin was such a train wreck. I really liked "End of the Century," about the Ramones. I'm sure more will come to mind as this thread grows.

I can't believe no one has mentioned "Brothers of the Head." It's a documentary about Siamese twins in a punk band.

The old PBS show, Sessions at West 54th, has some really, really great DVDs...I know they have a couple of "Best of" discs. I HIGHLY recommend any of them.

Neil Young's Greendale.

Anjanette,
Ben Folds Five's Sessions at West 54th DVD is another one of my favorites!

The Devil and Daniel Johnston is brilliant. I'm surprised there are so many fans on here.

If you listen to Punk, some good ones are "We Jam Econo" about the Minutemen and "The Decline of the Western Civilization" about the scene in the late 70's Both are excellent as well.

It Might Get Loud is a good one that was just released.

I looked through my collection...some of these have already been mentioned, but some haven't:

Gram Parsons - Fallen Angel
Townes Van Zandt - Be Here to Love Me
Return to Sin City - A Tribute to Gram Parsons
Heartworn Highways
X Live in Los Angeles
The Last Waltz
The Future is Unwritten (Joe Strummer)
The Clash - Westway to the World
The Clash - Revolution Rock Live
Best of the Johnny Cash Show

the wall- pink floyd

Under the Covers.

No it is not a porn film. The story of two guys who designed a lot of album covers such as CSN&Y, The Doors, Jackson Browne, Joni Mitchell, The Eagles. Includes a lot of rare home movies. My favorite is a home video of the Eagles tripping out on Peyote in the desert. Hilarious.

"And I'm frightened by those
who don't see it."

lilybear,
I can't believe I forgot Westway to the World AND Be Here to Love Me/Heartworn Highways!

wyson,
We Jam Econo is another good one I forgot to mention.

Blasto, that reminds me, I need to watch Heartworn Highways again. Don't you love the drunken Christmas party at Guy Clark's house, with Steve Young, Rodney Crowell, and a very young Steve Earle?

I thought of one more that I have to include, even though it is only available on VHS. Midnight Roads & Stages Seen captures the excitement of a Jason and the Scorchers live show, and they are the only band I've ever seen that matches the energy of the Avett Brothers.

ryan adams has a really good one out there with him in jamaica i think....
can't go wrong with any dylan dvds

and not music related but i want to watch and has been highly recommened is andy warhol documentary.

i really love Music DVD's and these are some of my recnt favorites....

MTV's Nirvana Unplugged is a great one... of course, I have to second The Last Waltz and Stop Making Sense... both are classics... ALso have to throw some love for Widespread Panic's "The Earth Will Swallow You".....also The Thee Pickers is a great dvd for a live performance of Doc Watson, Ricky Scaggs, and Earl Scruggs ( if you're into bluegrass).... The Police also have a phenomal live performance from a show at Phillips Arena in ATL, GA... I believe its called Every Breath You take.... Grateful Dead"s "Closing of Winterland" is another nice live dvd....

Well Locust, Mount Pleasant, Concord.... LETS GOOO!

Lovers of banjo and/or world music will enjoy Throw Down Your Heart, the "making of" documentary of Bela Fleck's Grammy-winning cd of the same name.

"Rock and Roll Circus" was a favorite of mine back when I was a classic rock fanatic. Early appearances by The Who, Rolling Stones, Taj Mahal, and The Dirty Mac (a supergroup that included John Lennon, Mitch Mitchell, and Eric Clapton but only released a rare EP) highlight the show...

i think the avetts need to make a short documentary on their up-coming

I second Blasto's recommendation of Ben Folds Five - The Complete W. 54th St. Session

If you want to get a little left of center and you wanna harken back to your mind altering days (wait that would be me...you might still be in yours) try Koyaanisqatsi - Live Out of Balance. No plot or band. Just a series of amazing images set to a Phillip Glass soundtrack. When it starts off you think it's going to be boring and then it sucks you in.

any Wilco DVD, Eric Clapton: One More Car, One More Rider, Gillian Welch: The Revelator Collection, Jeff Buckley: Live in Chicago
