From My Jam Bands to Avett Brothers -- Welcome to the new energy

From My Jam Bands to Avett Brothers -- Welcome to the new energy

Music; Not to disparage the slew of old dudes I always go see, but besides absolutely loving the music played by these guys last night at the Boulder Theater, I could not help but make the following observations:

1. They are young. Young faces faces, unplanned, unfettered movement and excitement on stage. No Steve Miller-esque planned jump up with your guitar pretending to be enthralled at the end of a song, act. Nothing staged, all real energy.

2. The Brothers can sing. Beautifully, harmonically. The mics were turned up on their vocals, no hiding behind anything. Clear, strong, singing.

3. They sing love songs of woman that are still strong and young and hot. We don't have to picture that chick from 30 years ago. These dudes are in it now and singing about it, just as our generation wrote and sung of its Sugar Mags. An early song was about asking a woman to marry -- and it was sincere! It would sound damn stupid from a thrice married, pot bellied late life rocker trying to speak of those first loves.

4. Before the show I was procuring tickets and was asking people about the band. "Their new album is really great," I heard. Sure as hell. When they played a new song from the new album it was even better than the last. How many times do we cringe when we hear those words: "from my new album." How nice to see a group that is in its writing and playing prime, where the next album can and will likely be its best.

5. Every song -- every f-ing song -- was enjoyable and interesting. Not once did I want to take my eyes, ears or energy from the stage. I cannot think of the last time it was like that. Domi, who is not a typically willing concert partner was equally engaged.

6. Flat out best band and show I have seen in 15 years. Here's to getting to enjoy their jam again, and enjoying the next generation playing music that moves this old dude like a Garcia Americana ballad.

Band is a funky Japanese, long haired guy on Cello, dancing like hell; Stand up bassist keeping it together; banjo/guitar (and a little keys) lead singer, who can absolutely bring it; guitar (and a little keys) lead singer and string player who moves the house; and drummer used on songs where they needed a drummer, so cool and unlike a drummer that it seemed he floated in and rocked perfectly just when he felt like it.

Avett Bros. play again tonight in Boulder and apparently are with Gov't Mule at the Rocks this summer.

Welcome! Great post that I have to agree with on all counts - reminding me why these guys really are so great. Definitely defining musicians of our time.

I've become not the man that I was.

Great post OP!!

Just curious...what led you to the show. Have you been getting in to the Brothers and decided to check them out? Did a friend tell you that you had to see them and you had no idea what to expect when you went in?

That is a beautiful first post!!!! I can tell we will be seeing more of you around here, Jim has the Avett virus... you can only cure it with more Avett!

EDIT: After writing it I realized I sounded like Christopher Walken doing the Cowbell skit on SNL http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q4royOLtvmQ

Really wasn't going for that but it's true!!!!!

Well Locust, Mount Pleasant, Concord.... LETS GOOO!

what a great post!

I gotta a fevah, and the only prescription is Merlefest 5/2. I haven't been to a show since 1/1/10.
Posts like these give me that anxious feeling to get back to a show.
'Bout that time, yo.

"Bring out the gimp."

I too cannot wait for Merlefest. I have not been to a show since Charlotte in August. Sigh.

Changing the plans that I’ve been setting on
I’m scared by the way that my life is getting gone

...Also VERY much looking forward to Merlefest! I have a feeling the Avett show is going to be NUTS.

"I'm a little nervous 'bout what you'll think when you see me in my swimming trunks."

Definitely a great first post.

I haven't been to a show since New Year's either Nate. We just got our tickets for Merlefest yesterday. It is for sure about that time...

WOOO! Love this. What a revelation it is finding the Avett Brothers. They're irresistable and might I add... life changing!

Tell me you can skip the day, and head up with me to the mountains.

Authentic.

Honest, loyal, true. Dialed in, in the moment. No artificial sweeteners. As awesome as it is rare.

Welcome, new fan.

"no artificial sweeteners" couldn't have put it better myself coffeebomb. in fact that's the best way i've heard the avetts described. great.

Welcome to the boards! I thoroughly enjoyed every moment of reading your first post, it took me right back to the first (and last, and everything in between! ) time I saw them..... Smiling
I especially liked this:

"5. Every song -- every f-ing song -- was enjoyable and interesting. Not once did I want to take my eyes, ears or energy from the stage. I cannot think of the last time it was like that."

So true!

I gave to you my ugly brown coat, you made it pretty when you put it on....
