NEW ALBUM FIRST LISTEN

just listened to the album on npr... alot different but really amazing. sounds like a whole new band

Replies for this Board Topic

gone are any criticisms of off-key or out of tune. i guess hundreds of takes with rubin instead of a dozen takes on their own helped hone that.

did i mention i f'ing love this? still the same but completely revolutionized. This is their Sgt. Pepper.

Not entirely what I expected, but amazing. It's very polished, very clean, and I haven't heard any banjo yet, but the writing all goes to the same depths and the vocals still carry the weight and feeling they always have.

I don't know if I should be ashamed of having listened early (peeking before Christmas?), but I am more anxious than ever to get my mail on the 29th!

Wow. Listened to it completely through now. And I can't believe it's over. I want MORE! Wonder what my wife would think if I sat the laptop by the bed with the headphones hooked up... Laughing out loud

my God, I will be wearing out the section of my harddrive where these songs will be sitting! Loving it. It IS different, but hearing all the songs back to back makes a BIG difference from just hearing one here and one there.

so............do those who have now listened on NPR see how ridiculous that 3.5 RS rating is? Laughing out loud

I don't care where you're from...you're a part of the family and you're part of the story /Jim Avett

killster said "and I haven't heard any banjo yet" Don't worry, there is some banjo on this record that is reminiscent of Mignonette to me.

...where nothing is owed, deserved, or expected...and your life doesn't change by the man that's elected...

I just got to work and started it up -- even though I've heard I & Love & You (the single) a jillion times now, there is something about hearing it as the first song on the album.

I have to say -- I should have probably waited till I got home to listen to this, as am a bit embarrassed by how emotional I am right now. At any rate, I wish I could make the next 50 minutes last a bit longer. I want to relish hearing this for the first time for as long as possible.

ETA....Oooh, I'm really starting to regret listening to this in public. "Head Full of Doubt..." is bringing up some tears. I'm going to have to play it off as allergies (I don't have them).

Will you forget when we have paid our debts,
who did we borrow from, who did we borrow from?

Head Full of Doubt is amazing, but I love And It Spread. I was skeptical what the studio version would sound like but it's my favorite so far. Hell, it's all awesome.

I know that for the most part the naysayers have been silenced, but I just wanted to put my two cents in. It's not about what instruments they play. It's the songwriting. And this album confirms this. Can't wait to get my own copy next week. Absolutely amazing.

Listened thru it once at work (trying to multi-task, of course) - it is different, and there is less of the banjo sound, but still a great record. Too early to tell which track is my favorite, but I'm leaning towards Slight Figure of Speech so far.

I know the analogy may be a bit old, but I keep thinking Wilco: from AM > Being There > Summerteeth had a similar evolution in sound...

i love the whole album! every bit of it!
i think Ten Thousand Words is one of the most beautiful songs to hit my ears in a couple of decades. that song, the lyrics, the guitars...just stops me in my tracks. blissful!

January Wedding=super tears

Agreed, killster. I think that one's my favorite... it's just so simple and pretty.

--
[ something more to say than 'hello and goodbye, i hope that you're okay' ]

simply amazing......

Every song is changing my life, true story.

I love it. I was skeptical a first, but I love it. "Head Full of Doubt, Road Full of Promise" gives me goose bumps every time. The whole album is amazing. I am so happy I came across this band at a concert in 2005.

"i think Ten Thousand Words is one of the most beautiful songs to hit my ears in a couple of decades. that song, the lyrics, the guitars...just stops me in my tracks. blissful!"

After a second listen, I agree. I love the vocals, especially the little catch/round they do. Great song.

I love the songwriting/lyrical content... but i think its over-produced. Too much drums/piano and not enough banjo/guitar. Little disappointed but I'm sure they will grow on me and I'm sure these songs will be amazing live..

I'm gonna hold off on doing a fullblown unsolicited opinion until I'm able to listen to this at home, free from work distractions, but I do want to say:

Song for song, I have never heard a better album lyrically. I'm not going to sit here and say every single song is the best thing I've ever heard. The sound of a few songs left me a bit flat, for various reasons. That's just subjective, and I know some will agree and others won't.

But I will say, confidently, that these guys are among the best songwriters I have ever heard. I wish it were possible for me to have their ability to look into my heart and write what I see there, because I so envy their ability to convey their feelings, their artwork, their passion in such an articulate and soulful way.

That's all I say for now, but they are poets, plain and simple.

just finished first full listen of i & love & you. thank you, avett brothers, for putting out another fine album.

i've tried to find other bands that hit me the way you do, but they just don't seem to cut it.

I am becoming more and more infatuated with Head Full and Tin Man. Which is difficult because Tin Man live was awesome and it sounds every bit as good on the album. And it Spread might be one of my top 5 TAB songs. And another post-er was right: listening to them all strung together is making each song even stronger. I'm on lap two and I think I'll keep it open and rolling all day. I used to like opening presents on Christmas Eve at Grandma's anyway... Laughing out loud Ill with want is a gem too. Should I keep going? I'm in love! It's different, but the quality of the songs is still the same if not better.

Is it just me? Could just be all the piano but I can't help but be reminded of the mourning the silver and the bell when I listen to this- like if it were stripped down a lot like that album is. Definitely different but awesome!

People don't quit playing because they grow old, people grow old because they quit playing.

missingavett --- uh, thanks? Wasn't particularly trying to to be funny, but I'll take the compliment.

This makes my year. They have really outdone themselves on the harmonies on this record. I definitely heard Seth screaming a few times which made my day, I thought that might be gone on this record. Each song is so true, and should I expect less? I hope all the success in the world from this album, they more than deserve it. They should be number 1 on every chart. This makes the excitement for my 3 TAB shows this week even more exciting.

LOVE IT ALL! thats all i have to say.

I've been listening all day and I have to say that Tin Man is my favorite of the new songs.

"am a bit embarrassed by how emotional I am right now."

Heids: I cried when I first listened to the album. It's brilliant.. and deserving of every great review. It's why I bought my back to back tickets for Baltimore & Philly.

What Can I Say!! I'm so proud of the guys!! I can remember seeing them at the Fairbarn in Pinehurst NC and Now coming out with a cd with Rubin and just amazing! I remember when Joe Kwon played with Big Pretty and The Red Rockets in Chapel Hill! Now he is part of one of the greatest bands ever!! The new CD is great, They are the Beatles of my generation! Perfect Space, Ten Thousand Words just hit home! Congrats guys

Haven't checked it yet... but being the "imperfectionist" that I am, I'm kinda dreading too much over-produced-ness (and the diminished banjo!) I KNOW it's going to be great, but I always feel a little rough-around-the-edges is more *real*...

{ because the daaaaamned alcohol... }

Why hasn't anyone mentioned Kick Drum Heart yet?! hah Smiling I absoltely adore the entire album, but that's got to be my favorite!

Ten Thousand words is amazing. Every time i listen to it i love it even more. Like a lot of you have said though, lyrically this album is phenomenal. I love it so much

Kill the doubt that strangles my self worth
Paint the picture that I swore I heard

I love each song more every time I listen, But Head Full of Doubt, Ill with Want and Ten Thousand words are right at the top. I & Love & You is of course breathtaking.

Free is not your right to choose, it's answering what's asked of you. Give the love you find until it's gone.

I'm 4 songs into it and I'm speechless! Gorgeous!

heids, it's your giddiness and overall joy. i love seeing (or reading about it) in people... i love sharing that bond with people who are just as excited/moved/overjoyed about this band as i...

Django... this is about as real an album as it gets... can't wait for you to hear it.

The Exclusive First Listen is the most popular and the 3rd most recommended thing on NPR.org right now!

Outrageous.

MissingAvett - I gotcha now. Yeah, I'm kind of totally geeking out about it over here. I cannot wait to hear it on speakers.

Favorite vocal moment: I wanna have pride like my mother has and not like the kind in the bible that turns you bad.

Seth's voice on that line is at it's pinnacle. Sheer beauty.

"The Exclusive First Listen is the most popular and the 3rd most recommended thing on NPR.org right now!"

awesome - let's keep hitting it and drive it's numbers way on up. Let's see, album is 50 minutes long, that means we should all be able to listen to it at least 8 times per day. Laughing out loud

At least.

Head Full... geez! I need to compose myself before I walk out of the school...

I've listened all the way through and I'm a complete wreck. I'm so proud of them.

I hope this helps Blasto today, at least a little.

I cant wait to go home and let the hubby hear. I am excited! I like this a lot so far, hard to listen at work though

Posted something to this effect in another thread, but just finished listening to the entire album for the second time and have to say the four song stretch of Head Full, Road Full....And it Spread....Perfect Space...Ten Thousand Words may be one of my favorite chunks of music ever put together on an album. I just can't get over how great those four songs are and they work so well together, showing such amazing versatility musically, vocally, and lyrically. I could just put those four on repeat and listen for hours, loving every minute....but I won't, cause I would be missing out on the gems to be found elsewhere on the track list.

Hearing it the first time i thought that it was a little overproduced. Having said that, the album is still nothing short of amazing, and i'm nothing short of thankful for their talent.

does anyone else think that Ten Thousand Words sounds like Blind Melon?

Third time listening. I'm LOVING it!
Not the same sound that made me fall in love with them, but such is how a lasting relationship plays out. You evolve, and draw from different places. I think their airing of their insecurities on this album endears them even more to their fans. Perfect Space blows me away. I heard them play it at Outside Lands in San Francisco, and it's been torture waiting to hear it again.

I got the whole album about a week ago, ha. I have a friend whose sister is best friends with Scott. She was nice enough to give me the album for a week to put it on my ipod before I went and saw them in Augusta. It's an amazing album, no doubt about it. The Perfect Space, Head Full of Doubt/Road Full of Promise and Ten Thousand Words are my most favorite. I specifically love January Wedding because they stayed true to their roots. That's one of the only songs on the album, in my opinion, that showed, you know, that they still have their own style. Just because they're doing something new with their music doesn't mean they're letting the media get to them, like I though when I first heard the album. I think the Avett's signing to Rick was a good beginning to many more great things to come. Congrats to the Avett Brothers on a new, amazing album.

Am I losing my mind? Am I growing backwards with time?

This is a sad sad day

I can't believe I'm the first to leave a negative post, this album is such a MASSIVE let down.

small upcoming band with a fantastic unique sound signs with a major label, and releases a pretty-good pop album that vaguely resembles the bands old sound.

Rick Ruben has neutered The Avett Brothers

I was undecided on it until I heard the studio version of The Tinman.
This was one of my more anticipated songs, having watched it on youtube like 50 times by now.
The album version has no power, no drive, none of the Avett Brothers fire. Then that STUPID tuba sample popped in and all hope was officially lost.

What happened to the blue grass? What happened to the banjo? Why is there a piano and drumkit in like every f***ing song? For a band that's trying to master the art of emotional song writing, none of these songs made me feel anything close to the emotion i got when I heard Mignonette for the first time.

I want my old Avett Brothers back...

This is ofcoarse all my reaction to the first listen. I'm still gonna go out, buy the album on the release date, listen to it a million times, and probably learn to love it. I just hate to see my favorite band move further and further away from the sound that made me fall in love with them.

NewfieldsNat19,

I couldn't agree more.

I still can't wait to get the album..and I know I'll love grow to love it, but the sound that got them where they are isn't present.

I feel like my 6th grade girlfriend broke up with me all over again.

Hopefully a live album with these (potentially) amazing songs will be released in the future.

SOLID album. I was concerned having heard how different the 3 pre-released songs were from the rest of their repertoire, but this new stuff is great and instantly catchy. I like the way the album flows. It builds and builds, then when you think it's coming back down BAM - it builds again. Can't wait for my BOX SET! C'mon 9/29.

Also want to comment on how absolutely GENIUS the roll out campaign has been! I've never seen a roll out like this. It lasted months and managed to successfully build anticipation the entire time! Even after releasing the album in its entirety (streaming) I'm still more stoked than ever to receive my VERY OWN copy!

One thing though.... what's up with the tuba in Tin Man? Makes it seem sort of cartoonish and tug-boaty in my opinion. My only negative critique though of my new favorite album.

Is it just me or does "Slight Figure of Speech" sound very Beach Boy-ish?
