New fan - best place to see them live?
New fan - best place to see them live?

I'd never heard of the Avett Brothers until Austin City Limits and now can't get enough. I'm in Alaska so no point waiting for them to come to me. I'm going to plan a vacation around one of their shows and wondering if I should pick a festival, red rocks or one of their headliner venues. Any thoughts? I'll also have the kiddos with me (12 & 13) so it needs to be family friendly. (First band my 13 year old really flipped for, doesn't she have great taste?)

Kate,
That's awesome! Depending on the festival, I would shy away from those. Although I hear Merlefest is pretty family-friendly, and there's nothing like seeing the guys play their home state.
Also, Red Rocks would be amazing. I wasn't much older than 13 the first time I saw a show there.
And yes, your whole family would appear to have excellent taste
Yeah, if you want your money's worth I'd see a show where they are headlining, and not a festival where they most likely will play a shorter set. They will get a full set at Red Rocks though, so that would be a good time to see them. I'd say most shows are family friendly. Theaters usually have a more respectful crowd, and less drunk people.
red rocks, hands down.
Red Rocks sounds like a good choice. And I echo that a theater with reserved seating is a better place for a family.

You have to take the kids to a Crystal Ballroom show, whenever we get word of the next one. if you're in Alaska its just a shot down the west coast anyways. If it's anything like last May it'll be something that none of you will be able to forget. And it's family friendly, just hold onto your loved ones if the second and third floor are merged at some point during the night.
Bonnarroooooo.
If I was gonna plan a vacation around an upcoming Avett show I'd go with either Europe or Australia.
Crystal and Europe are both great options.

welcome to the board AK Kate!
Honestly, for your first concert I strongly recommend going to an Avett performance only. Price wise and experience wise. Unless you are stoked about seeing any of the other performances on the bill at a festival.
The Avett live experience is not just a concert. It is an electrifying, floor stomping, tear down the house and hug your mate kind of time. They are the absolute best live band out there.
Plus nobody on this board would stear you wrong.
Thanks for the great info. If funds were unlimited I would definately be winging it to Europe but my mileage award tickets will barely get me to Denver. I've wanted to go to Red Rocks since I was a teenager. Back in the dark ages when I was in high school U2's "Under a Blood Red Sky" was my favorite album. The concert video was filmed at Red Rocks. Thanks again. K.
Can't imagine you'd be disappointed. We will be hoping for a full review.

Crystal Ballroom in Portland, OR.
I hope they play their again. They played back to back nights. I believe it was 45 songs, each one different. I've been to 4 shows since and none of them even came close.
