New Fan from Florida
Hey yall!! I discovered the Avett Brothers over the weekend (although I'd heard of them before, but wasn't familiar with the music) in Hot Topic (of all places)!! I walked in and a song was ending. The next song to play was "January Wedding." I went over to the register and peeked at their mp3 display, scribbled "AVETT BROTHERS" on my arm in Sharpie, and off I went to Borders to buy the album, which has been in constant rotation in my car since. I know just about every word to each song.
So...what I'd like to know is have they/will they play Central Florida/the Orlando area? I split my time between here and Northern Virginia, but I don't see any tour dates for either location.
Any recommendations for the newbie to expand my Avett Brothers knowledge while I wait for a live show?
Are there other Florida fans on this board?
Hope to see you all at a show sometime soon!
Much love,
Harmony

Wish me luck, I know you think I'll need it.
For all the hardest roads we have to walk alone.
Holy friggin' moly! Have I been under a rock? In a cave? Probably spending all my time on the Black Crowes.
OK...I have my work cut out for me, but I like a challenge, particularly when it comes to music. Hey Chillix...you're in DC? I am up that way part of the year. Where have TAB played up there? I'm wondering how I missed it. They would take over the county I lived near up there...Rappahannock County...foothills of the Blue Ridge mountains. This is the music we all live on up there.
Then I spend half the year near Mickey Mouse in Orlando where they listen to pure s***e. Go figure. Makes me friggin' crazy. I can't believe I was once in radio in this town....back before techno and whatever else you call the crap they are playing.
So I do feel lucky!! Thanks!!!!!

Welcome Harmony. Definitely get everything. If you can only get one or two right away, I would suggest Emotionalism and Mignonette. That will overwhelm you for a while. I couldn't stop playing them, or play anything else for quite some time. Then when you are ready for more, A Carolina Jubilee and both Gleams or Four Thieves. Geesh, it is just so hard to recommend because they are all just so great!!

The Avetts are a rare talent, timeless yet current, and capable of singing straight to a single soul while broadcasting to the ever-increasing masses.
Welcome and Merry Christmas to you... The Avett Brothers's music is a gift that keeps on giving.
Also, I might actually recommend that you get just one (or two) at at time, so that you can truly enjoy and immerse in each album.
I'll heartily second stirred's recommendation of Emotionalism and then Carolina Jubilee or Mignonette, both great. But you have to get Four Thieves Gone really soon, too... oh man. Yeah, I'm having the same problem as her.
Why not just hop in the car next week and drive up to Atlanta or Asheville for the New Year's holiday? That's the BEST WAY to get this music in your ears...and bonus, no more waiting for a show in your area!
(though one or two will surely come to one of your neighborhoods by summer or fall)
I love first posts like this one.
Maybe "Untitled" is the"In The Curve" single?
I have no idea, that'd be my guess though.

I agree, Nate. It is probably Tales of Coming News/In The Curve that was given to the first few hundred people that bought A Carolina Jubilee. (according to that one guy who has everything
)

Hot Topic, sincerely?!!!
They played Florida this year-Ft. Lauderdale, Ybor, St. Augustine, Tallahassee and Orlando. Unfortunately made only two of the shows, but you need run out and buy you a ticket to a show near you. I'll be making that Florida circuit next time around (fingers crossed). Welcome!

you just missed a helluva run back in july. st. auggie, orlando and tampa, all right in a row. they'll be back, the sunshine state loves them! there's a few more of us from FL, here on the boards. stick around and you'll see
i recommend picking up four thieves gone and carolina jubilee...then emotionalism and mignonette. they're all great.
*welcome!*

Yeah, another Florida fan!! I'm north of you by about 80 miles. Just south of Gainesville. I'm also looking forward to more Florida dates. I saw them in Orlando and Tampa this year. Simply amazing!!!!!!!!!!
Everyone is right about how you will become obsessed with owning everything they have released. In this past year I went from owning zero TAB to now only needing 4 of the older items to fill in the collection. The great thing about finding them now is that you have so much new music to listen to. No need to wait another year until they release another EP, it's all new to you.
Oops, forgot to add my suggestions. I'd go with Emotionalism and then Mignonette, then the two Gleam EPs.
Be sure to hund down the thread here that's about the Best or Most Wild Performances on YouTube. Seeing these guys live is far different than listening to their cd's. Take January Wedding, the cd is rather subdued, check out a live performance and you'll see a totally different take on the song.
I tried to think of three words that describes what I like most about TAB and here's what I came up with.
lyrics - They have a way with words!
character - These guys are humble, honest, hardworking, etc, etc.
passion - They bring a unique passion to their music and performances.
Those three qualities take me to a level far beyond loving a song or two.
Thanks, yall...for EVERYTHING you've said and offered so far. Can't believe I missed the July run here in Central Florida. Probably saw the dates posted around town and didn't pay any attention. Grrrr!
Angischy, I am considering the Atlanta show. Good reason to go bum rush my friend who's been giving me tons of s*** for not visiting!! I think I saw the show is sold out at Fox. Did I see that? Been looking at so much my eyes are blurring. Hell, I might make Asheville...I was planning on being in Virginia for New Year's...so what's a few hours drive amongst new friends?
Quick questions for you guys...are the shows typically all ages? I have a 10-year old rocker (guitar, banjo, violin and drums), who also was with me when we discovered TAB in Hot Topic (YEAH..SERIOUSLY). So, he's obsessed too. I take him to a lot of Black Crowes shows, but he's cool with chillin' and waitin' his turn out to shows as well. I can't imagine I'd be risking his life and limbs at a TAB show...not too many mosh pits, eh?
As far as expanding my TAB knowledge, it seems you all have it worked out...and I love it. I'll stay in touch.
xoxo, Harmony

Maybe not a mosh pit, but the pit is seriously the best place to experience TAB. In Tampa a guy asked me if I minded if he jumped during the show. I told him, "Heck no, that's why I'm here in the middle." It was the best concert experience I've ever had...hands down. TAB fans aren't rude in the pit, just lots of fun.
Nice to see so many FL connections getting acquainted. I'm a former Sunshine State gal myself, & the lack of sunshine since I've left has been a real downer
Speaking of Florida fans...is anyone headed back to central FL or anywhere near that neck of the woods after Atlanta? I know a certain Tampa lady who still needs to figure out a way home sometime after she wakes up on January 2nd in the ol' ATL.
She'll most definitely chip in on gas, plus she'll keep you highly entertained with stories of other musical escapades, plus her laugh is contagious and sure to keep you grinning for much of the ride.
(Thanks in advance if anyone is able to help out)
Ang...I reached out to my Atlanta friend at lunchtime. If we can get a hold of some tickets for the Hotlanta show on 1/1, I could possibly get Tampa gal home (I'm in Orlando). What's the possibility of getting tickets?? I'll go check Craigslist and Stubhub...does Tampa girl have any extra ticks? Sold out, right?
--
I have no selfish memorandum...no confusion for me.
Yes, Atlanta is sold out.
But I love that you jumped at the thought of coming (you'll fit right in here)...and I still think you should!
I know I enticed you further (even though It's sold out), so I hope you don't feel led on, but for sure, with a venue that big, there are bound to be extras. I'm sure Craigslist & stubhub has them available, but the price is probably more than face value.
Just keep checking the board here and make a post of your own (to add to all the others) saying you're looking for tix.
Some folks may get tix for Christmas and not be able to use them... the venue could still, in theory, release some tix they were holding on to for whatever reason....you just never know.
We've all got our ears & eyes open looking for anyone who may need them and I'll be sure to let ya know.
If you're on Facebook, there's an Avett Brothers page, and there are also Event pages for the shows mentioned.
Oh, and if Asheville's more your style, I am holding an extra pair of tix for that show.
*nudge* *nudge*
thanks angi!!
nope, no extra tickets harmony, sorry about that, but i am looking for a ride home from atlanta, to at least somewhere in florida! my sister is willing to come pick me up if i'm w/in 1 to 2 hrs. away from here.
I will totally chip in on gas and i'm willing to drive some, too!! someone??? anyone???
angi-i figured at worst case, i'll be leaving the driving to good ole greyhound!!

oh, there's that Tampa gal now.
(also, Harmony, check your PMs ...Top of screen, click on MY PROFILE--> Read my messages)
Thanks for your help Angi....I'll keep looking at the board and Craigslist and I have some local Hotlantans looking, so like I wrote you on the PM, if it's meant to be, we'll see it happen! And I'll make room for our Tampa friend if it does happen. I'll go find everyone over on FB tonight!
Later!

Another Florida (Jacksonville) Avett fan. I;m in jacksonville and yes they have played in Orlando before. They came to the "Social" a bar/club downtown and I have also seen then in Tampa (not to far from you) and also here at Freebirds Live in Jax Beach.
I'm so glad you got hooked on them, they will be a constant to your music collection.
Hi Harmony. Just left the Sunshine State to come home to 20 inches of snow.
Check your messages. I may know someone who can help you out with Avett info in Florida.

Docmike...Seriously...you are in Point Pleasant? Ha ha....better go call my Sea Girt and Wall Township friends...20 inches of snow is ridiculous for that area. Just saw the Black Crowes at The Stone Pony for my birthday (well, in September)...nice to see that Asbury Park is gettin' all cleaned up. I'll go look for your PM now.
RyanCammie...The Social?????? Are you friggin' kiddin' me? BEST place in Orlando to see a show...very intimate. If they are playing the House of Blues in Orlando now, then The Social just ain't gonna be big enough no more!

I get to so excited when people say Florida fans but everyone's just from the central/northern areas.. that's lower Alabama and Georgia. Where's the south Floridiots at? Born and raised down here (don't let the CA location fool you, definitely not my hometown) and wish other people were representing the tri-county area!
Alyx, I'm only a north-central FL fan because I moved here 6 years ago. I've spent most of life in Broward County. I go back several times a year just to see friends and of course get food from some of my favorite restaurants.
Harmony, The Social...I'll be seeing a show there in March. Have never been there before. It will be an acoustic show with three artists. Looking forward to something other than HOB.
BROWARD! Now that's what I like to hear. I'm on the border of Palm Beach and Broward.
I'd also venture to say that the Social is only okay. Their setup is really weird, with a sunken pit and a barrier around the top, so unless you're in the pit and tall or along the bar/barrier thing, it's kind of hard to see much of anything at all. And because it's Borelando, everyone just gets super wastyfaced and the bouncers are really rude.
Thanks for the details about The Social. Feel free to send me a pm with any other details you can think of. I'll definitely want to be as close to the stage as possible. Also, do you know if they allow cameras?
super wastyfaced!!!! hahahaha...I love that!!!! It's true about getting up front at The Social, but you shouldn't have a problem doing that if you're on time for the show. Just pee beforehand and get your drink 'cos giving up the real estate could cost you, even for a trip to the potty!
And I have GREAT news!!!! One of my new TAB fans from this very board hooked me up with tickets to the Atlanta show at Fox on New Years Day! Hot diggety ding dong!
Tampa...you got your ride...I'll PM you now.
xoxo, Harmony

Harmony, yeah, I live in DC. They played in Baltimore at Ram's Head Live and DC at the Lisner this year. Last year they played at Pier 6 in Baltimore and the Birchmere in Alexandria. but before that they played smaller places--Iota in Arlington a while ago and the Recher in Baltimore, Artscape Festival in Baltimore, I think the 9:30? other DC people will have to tell you, I first saw them in July '07.

For all the hardest roads we have to walk alone.
i am in south florida, palm beach county
it always seems like it takes forever for the music i like to get down here but this year hasn't been too bad.
freebirds! ahah! there's a blast from the past! my buddy opened up sneakers. i've got a couple friends in jax/st aug area. ryancammie, you ever run into a Chase Medford?
Chase Medford? Why is that ringing a bell?

Welcome Harmony. I'm in Orlando and saw the Bros here twice. It's gonna be a while though I fear until their return. Tallahassee was my favorite show thusfar, even more than NYE/NYD due to their duplicative nature, although the energy was unparalleled at Asheville and Atlanta. I trust you thoroughly enjoyed Atlanta. By the way, here is a link to some free live concerts you may want to add to your Avett Brothers playlists:
This is a must have from NPR, the Newport Folk Festival:

There are some decent recordings and interviews in here:

And of course the SXSW concert is great to add to your library:

Thanks Gil! You rock!! Yeah, I liked Atlanta a lot more that long-time fans due to my familiarity with the new album the most. But being the die-hard fan of other bands that I travel around to see, I groan at repeated setlists and "hit song" sets. Another Avett Nation fan from Tampa rode back to Florida with me and now I know some older stuff, but I got a long way to go before I am familiar with it all!
I have checked out some of the SXSW footage..can't wait to see what all is included in the link you sent.
Where are you in Orlando? (I'm in Winter Park) Do you get out to see many other shows? Typically, I catch shows at the HOB...my favorite local place (or The Social).

Harmony, care to share which bands you like to follow? Feel free to PM me. Since I'm in FL it's nice to hear about other bands. I'm planning to see Matt Butcher in Gainesville in March. He opened for TAB in Orlando/Tampa last year. The show is only $5. Can't beat that for a night of live music.
Faith, I follow the Black Crowes a bit, but their tour is done for now. Chris Robinson is at home enjoying his new baby and new wife (NOT jealous...haha). I used to work in radio here in Orlando, so I will jump on any live music show that my colleagues buzz about too...stuff at The Social typically.
Hey...my old boss has a ranch in Dunnellon...I get up there from time to time and hang out and play cowgirl. Let me know what's cool on a weekend and I'll drive up perhaps.
