New Favorite Line...

New Favorite Line...

I'm sort of new here, and I'm sure this topic has been discussed before so to keep from repeating a dead topic I'd like to know your NEW favorite line from a TAB song. Mine is constantly changing. Currently I'm in love with "I give up on trying, to understand why we were blessed" from St. Joseph's. It's simple but it gets me every time. So what about you??

Replies for this Board Topic

that would be the line in front of the state theater friday night with me in it.

...you're a car, you're a red Trans Am, you're 90 miles an hour...

I really like that line from St. Joseph's as well. I tend to be drawn towards those sort of simple, naked, lines that are beautiful because they're in one way so obvious yet so difficult for most of to just come out and say.

Some of my favorites, "...are you listening/and were you ever really listening/like I want for you to listen now." from Bella Donna. Actually all of Bella Donna.

Also love Laundry room, especially the honest pleading intro, "Don't push me out/just a little longer/stall your mother/disregard your father's words"

a couple old songs, I always have thought the intro line of Sorry Man was brilliant, "Your mama doesn't like me" I mean that just says it all.

and another older one My Last Song To Jenny, "Did you sleep/Not a wink/well neither did I"

and even the lightness of One Line Wonder "i love you but i can't remember why"

The intro to Die Die Die, "she's fighting with the sky/she thinks she can" is also spot on. I feel like I'm reading the opening line to a Raymond Carver short story.

I'm NOT really moved by the yearbook style lines at all, you know the "if you're loved by someone you're never rejected/decide what to be and go be it."
sorry if this offends anyone, but those are just trying a little too hard in my opinion. I feel like a song like that is trying to be written, where as a song like bella donna, exists in a way that it has almost always existed even if it had never been played before. It's just so truthful and universal because it's so specific and direct.

Offering

I’ve known others
And I've loved others too
But I loved them cause they were stepping stones
On a staircase to you

--
"But I can't go back, and I don't want to,
'cause all my mistakes, they brought me to you"

"not even the hands of god could hold me back from you" from the greatest sum gets me everytime

i absolutely agree with nittygritty; the avett's ability to portray simplicity is what really draws me to their music.

In the curve....

But I rose from the ashes with just a few scratches
my crucifix warm on my neck

oooo just writing it gives me shivers... what a strong image...

Wow, even though this topic has come up any times, these responses are different and equally as great. A few that have really been sticking with me of late:

Everyone I know out here is lonely. Even those who have someone to lie beside at night.

I will keep my wits about myself. Disregard directions sent from hell.

I sleep with remorse and regret hangs 'round my door forevermore.

there's only one thing here worth hoping for

Great topic...NittyGrittyKiddie is spot on. It can be so difficult to choose a favorite line, but there are a few that stick out:

"just do your best...it's the only way to keep that last bit of sanity"

"I meant what I said when I said I would rearrange my plans and change for you"

"a country girl can't be made out of anybody here"

"ninety and rising, soon we'll have to hide out in the shade"....that song immediately takes me back to being a "kid" in NC and Summer.

Freezey...that is also my favorite St. Joseph's line.

Honestly, I think I love it all...

Linda...I was going to use the "lonely" one. So true in so many situations. Sad

"I was always told that...I would find somebody...I could keep a promise for. Ba da ba ba!"
Actually all the words of SSS are stuck in my head lately...

"I know that you're smiling, Baby, I don't even need to see your face "

I get bored in class and write down lyrics from TAB and have a full page of it. I didn't even intend for it to be like that. There words just speak to me throughout everyday situations, and if something happens, happy sad, a lyric will pop in my head during class and I'd write it down. Its a cool piece of "artwork" lol.

"A country girl can't be made out of anybody here, don't touch it, it loves you not."

I would have to say from "Perfect Space" is mine. "I wanna have friends...that I can trust...that love me for the man I've become, not the man that I was". Those words are the only thing you need in life....Good friends(family) and people to take you for what you are!

I wanna have friends...that I can trust...that love me for the man
I've become not the man that I was.

Offering wins hands down for me everytime in any discussion (favorite lyric, favorite song, what song do you want to hear tonight...etc.)

And I've known others
And I've loved others too
But I loved them cause they were stepping stones
On a staircase to you

I'm with you, Looney - Offering is my new "gotta hear before death" song (now that I've heard "if it's the Beaches" live), and it's one of the most meaningful to me as well. You've already quoted the line that I love the most from Offering, so I'll throw out my fave from If it's the Beaches. Actually, it's pretty much the entire last verse, I can't pick just one line.

If it's the beaches
If it's the beaches' sands you want
Then you will have them
If it's the mountains' bending rivers
Then you will have them
If it's the wish to run away
Then I will grant it
Take whatever you think of
While I go gas up the truck
Pack the old love letters up
We will read them when
we forget why we left here

Ain't it like most people, I'm no different, we love to talk on things we don't know about.

Mine just changed today...

"So if ever someone says to you, life isn't fair...get used to it, then you should say, 'Well it might be if folks like you would let it be.'"

the whole november blue song is amazing and captures a part of my life that i can't ever seem to find the right and perfect words too along with if its the beaches which heids posted!
One of the most beautiful lines is: "there is nothing worth sharing, Like the love that let us share our name"

--

@graceful1003: "Always remember there is nothing worth sharing, like the love that let us share our name"

I used this line as the last line of the best man speech I wrote for my brother's wedding in September, and it touched lots of people...it's one of my favorites as well.

IT'S IMPOSSIBLE TO PICK AN ABSOLUTE FAVORITE!!!

I would have listed that line from Murder in the City, b/c I seriously believe it's one of the best lines of poetry/songwriting I've ever heard. However, I can't listen to that song anymore b/c it hits waaaay too close to home, so I couldn't list that as a "favorite."

Ain't it like most people, I'm no different, we love to talk on things we don't know about.

i know i love that line! awesome that you used it at your brothers wedding. (perfect setting Eye-wink )
i just checked out your website!!! love the t.hall and avett cover.

Every time I write. This line is good stuff.

So if ever someone one says to you,
Life isn't fair, get used to it
Then you should say 'Well it might be
If folks like you would let it be"

The line that keeps playing in my head this week is from The Gleam's "Find My Love."

How can you tell when goodbye means goodbye
Not just for now, for the rest of your life
How can you stand there with love in your eyes
And still be walking away

Jackie

I’ll come back home without my things/
‘Cause the clothes I wore out there/
I will not wear around you

My new favorite line is "it's not the chase that I love it's me following you" from Kick Drum Heart.

"You're the back and forth sway of the hammock all day" has been sticking with me this week.

And I'm with heids on the last verse of "If It's the Beaches." I don't normally have really physical reactions to stuff, but the first time I saw the video from Eugene in 2007 it gave me goosebumps. Might not be a big deal to some people, but that was the first time I'd ever had a reaction like that to music.

"I've never been too good at reading in between the lines."

living of love is possibly the most beautiful song i've heard live.

"And yes we live in desperate times
But fading words and shaking rhymes
There’s only one thing here worth hoping for
With Lucifer beneath you and God above
If either one of them asks you what your living of
Say love, say for me love"

Thanks graceful, there are several Avett covers on my YouTube channel at:

Heids, I have that verse on my Facebook right now. Its such a wonderful line. Another one of my faves!

heids, i am sorry that song hits close to home. i dont usually disect songs for what they mean when they are written but more for what they mean to me and although its one of the greatest lines of all time that song in general is obviously a very sad, painful song to relate to.

my song like that is melissa : allman brothers...can't listen to it anymore and its hard b/c its such a great song.
--

Mine is:

"If I was a kitten, I'd play outside...."

Despite Scott's cynicism toward young Seth's early attempts at song-writing, Seth really had/has a way with words. I can totally relate. If I was a kitten, I'd play outside as well. Very moving.

"A city man'll tell ya, "Do what it takes to stay on top,
But my Pa's a country man, and that's what I'll be 'til I drop." -Margo

"but I don't wanna fight...I just ask let me be...I won't give you a chance to be my enemy"...now if I only I could say it fast!!!!!

"and the person I am and the person I'll be refuse to meet"...Black, Blue

I gave to you my ugly brown coat, you made it pretty when you put it on....

I couldn't choose.. I get goosebumps listening to The perfect space, murder in the city, and All my mistakes.

"A country girl can't be made out of anybody here, don't touch it, it loves you not."

"And if your love laughs at your dreams, well it's not as bad as it seams. Either way one of them has got to go."

"if you come down to my window/and I climb out my window/then we'll get out of reach" and "with your heart my soul is bound/and as we dance I know that heave can be found" from the sentimental version of Swept Away have been on my mind recently.

The little girl I babysit for, Margot, loves to be sung to while being rocked to sleep. Only problem is, she knows the words to all the traditional lullabies, and would never sleep, just sing along. So, I started singing the slow and sweet Avett songs to her, and this is her favorite. Also, they work like a charm!

Yogini, that one has been my favorite as well since Gleam 2 came out.

Also, "I would like to say it hurts me, but it don't. That I don't know just what to do, but I doooo."

Nasty Nate that just made my day haha

WHEN I DRINK I HEAR THHINGS THAT ARENT REALLY THERE HAVE FISTFIGHTS IN THE AIR IN MY UNDERWEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! KIND OF A REWRITE I CAME UP WIHT LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I really enjoyed reading through this thread. Some great examples of what makes TAB, TAB.

For me right now it's:

"I'm here with Scotti, and he was driving the Ford Taurus before the problem."

Okay so that isn't a lyric, but rather a clip from Causey Commentary (Mignonette). Still it makes me laugh every time I hear it.

Home in Carolina

truth is cool but all that really matters is that you have your good times

"decide what to be, and go be it."

simple. to the point. straight through me.

"I have worries to give to the sea"

--
"I have a home in Carolina, Not far from the city lights, But we can see the stars at night baby.. baby"

Freedom's not your right to choose; it's answering what's asked of you.

Sheer brilliance

this is really hard! All of their lyrics are AMAZING! (:
But there is that one that shows up in If It's The Beaches and I Would Be Sad... "I would rearrange my plans and change for you."

The lyric that i'm in love with right now though, would have to be

"I'm killing myself thinking, I've fallen like the leaves." From November Blue.

From Tin Man I love "And so it goes a man grows cold, Some would say a man grows strong, They tell me life grows short, I say the road only grows long".

Can't wait for NYC!

"I gave to you my ugly brown coat. You made it pretty when you put it on. Warmth in the early morning chill my girl. Warmth in early April." This line is special to me because I had an old dusty, worn out brown jacket that I gave my wife when she was cold on one of the most special nights of our early relationship.

"We came for salvation. We came for family. We came for all thats good thats how we'll walk away"

"And I can't go back. And I don't want to. Cause all my mistakes. They brought me to you."

Being from the east coast but living in a land-locked state, the beach songs always do it for me:

"Pack the old love letters up. We will read them when we forget why we left here"

Lots of the lines quoted above are on my list of favorite Avett lines. In recent weeks, there are two lines that really resonate for me:

"It's who I am that won't let me alone" (from "Skin and Bones," unreleased)

"But I, I wish for you more than I can give, than I can do" (from "Hand Me Down Tune" on Emotionalism)
