New songs this tour

Sure hope they give us a heavy dose of the new record on this tour that is about to start. Going to be attending 3 of them in the next couple of months and with the 5 concerts I saw last year i'm ready for some new songs or at least some old stuff that doesn't get played often. Thoughts?

I agree!! I love all of it, but I love when they "try out" new songs on the road.

I saw them 7 times last year... and I said at the end of the year that I was going to wait until after the new album to go to more shows... BUt I couldnt stand it... I already have tickets to Birmingham and Tupelo... whether the new album is out or not... I hope to hear more new songs... as well as 'new" old songs Eye-wink

I'm going to Birmingham as well. I really want to hear some new stuff in a bad way. Let's hope for the best.

And It Spread needs to be the first one rotated off and it can take Tin Man with it. I like Tin Man, but I'm not a big fan of the other one and both are getting old to me. I don't get the guys' obsession with putting them in every single set list, often back to back. Maybe they're the "let's get our feet under us" numbers...

They play them because the songs are on their latest album release and most new fans know I and Love and You best.

Really dailyfisherman? Really? I wasn't aware. My point is that those 2 songs have been on every single setlist for the last 2 years and I'm tired of them. I was trying to elicit some coversation about whether others are also tired of them, not to have it pointed out to me that it's because they're on the "latest" release, which is now nearing 3 years old, which is sort of the point of this whole thread.

While I have never, ever been disappointed by any of their shows, but there does seem to be a bit of overlap in the setlists -- especially for those of us who like to go to multiple shows when they're close together. I could do away with "And it Spread," too!

Not that I dislike those songs, but I agree with jmu1994. While I agree with dailyfisherman that they may feel the need (or just want to) play songs from the newest album, there are 5 songs from I&L&Y that I haven't heard played. I could certainly see them playing I&L&Y at every show or Laundry Room, which by the way was played less in my last shows than And It Spread.
I am hesitant to post this since I think many people will take it way more critical than I mean it to be. But for discussion sakes here it goes. And I agree with the original post, I can't wait to hear some of the new stuff played. And the old stuff.

jmu1994 is a douche. I agree i'd rather hear more older songs from mignonette or new songs from the album yet to be released. But I also think the most quality work they've done is on Emotionalism and I&L&U so i understand the set lists being primarily comprised of those albums. I'm just happy to hear/see them perform whenever I'm fortunate enough to!

I think we all agree with the original topic. Preachin to the choir Smiling But at least half the audience members at any given time are not diehard fans and want to hear those songs. Yeah, those of us that go to multiple shows hear a lot of the same stuff, but I know that's how it will be and I still buy tickets and want to go. Plus I'm very appreciative of the rare things I've heard. (81 different songs in 14 shows is pretty good stats in my opinion) If they played old, rare stuff all the time, they would no longer be rare and special. That being said, I'm so happy there's a new album coming out and can't wait to hear new songs live.
Also, there is no reason to get rude or short with people when discussing music. I think that is part of the reason so many fans have stopped posting here.

Well said, blaire543!

I'm guessing 1994 is your birth year because you are rather childish. My comment was not rude in any way I was just stating the facts. If you don't want to hear those songs then don't go. I'm sure many other fans would love your ticket. The songs you mentioned are far from the top of the list of my favorite songs and of course I'd rather hear older songs (new ones too) but like I said before the majority of fans are new fans. The woman beside me at the last show (charleston) only knew And it Spread, Tin Man, and I and Love and You. And she probably would not have enjoyed the concert as much had they not played those songs.

JDawn, i said the same thing about not seeing them until the new album, but then they played in backyard and couldn't pass it up.
I was disappointed in Charleston's setlist, and dare I say that I was bordering on bored at the show.

I'm in the "Avetts can do no wrong" camp. I love And it Spread and Tin Man and everything else. As long as I don't see the same exact setlist over and over, i'm good.

That's weird you weren't feelin the Charleston show Willcomply... I would've killed to see Famous Flower and my all time fave St. Josephs

knucklehead,
It was just a weird show all around, and no the fault of the brothers.
First thing, is that they were having self-admittedly technical issues, which kinda killed the flow and energy. If you could've heard the way Go To Sleep ended, it was just this awkward kinda finish, like Seth got everyone all riled up with the La La's, but then had to fix his guitar, then everyone quit playing except Joe Kwon, then he started trailing off looking around to see what to do, then he just stopped playing.
Secondly, I had some seats way in the back and by the time the sound got back to me, it was nothing but bass-heavy.
Thirdly, the setlist was a little too familiar, and rightfully so, given the venue. I don't blame them for that at all. Just would've like some new stuff.

I loved Flower and Joseph, it wasn't my first time hearing them live, and really, those duets with just one mic was the saving grace of the song.
I felt so bad for TAB because they were so apologetic and knew they weren't coming across their best, but it was a good show. Good, not great.

I don't understand the "Avetts can do no wrong camp". But I also think And it Spread is a really weak song.

Yellowbandit, I have Avett fever in my blood! I don't understand it either... My girlfriend and other friends think I like them waaaaaaaay too much...

Ok, ok. I'm calling a truce. I was being a little glib with dailyfisherman, but clearly I touched a nerve (you stay classy gladamson!). I get that we should keep in mind new TAB fans who only know ILY and that's fine, just as we will do the same for the legions of new fans they will attract (and deserve) after the new album is released. That said, message boards are for voicing opinions and sharing info, so in some sense we're all correct. It's all good!

It's definitely all good. I like And It Spread and Tin Man but I could do with out I & love & you and HFOD. I got tix for the Alabama shows, West Virginia, and Red Rocks so far and I'm hoping by the time these shows roll around the new album is released. Btw, I would give my left nut to hear St. Joseph's live! One more thing, Hit me up if you're planning on coming to the Pittsburgh show. I love when I only have to drive 15 minutes to a show rather than 14 hours.

For a little bit more flavor on my personal feeling of being tired with And it Spread and Tin Man, my wife and I saw TAB 5 times last year. At 3 of those shows, they opened with And it Spread followed immediately by Tin Man. At one of the other two shows, they didn't open with them, but played them back to back in the middle of the show. We had a running joke about it, like those songs must be the ones they play to "warm up." Which I guess makes sense if it's a big crowd that's mostly unfamiliar with anything other than I&L&Y.

If I have a chance to meet them again, I'm seriously going to ask what the deal is with those two songs when they seem to vary the rest of the setlists so much.

I'm not a hater and I'm generally in the camp where I think they can do no wrong. However, my second question to them would be why it's taking so freaking long to release the new album. I&L&Y is coming up on its 3 year anniversary. I'm sure they have good reasons and I'm very interested in learning the strategy and business behind it.

The more I learn about the "strategy and business behind it." the less I understand it. I'm not holding my breath on this one. It would not surprise me if it takes even longer than expected.
