New Years eve in Asheville again
New Years eve in Asheville again
Posted: Wednesday, August 25, 2010 - 13:06
I just saw a retweet by AvettNation that TAB is playing Asheville 12/30 & 12/31. This should be another great way to end the year!

oh my...i just heard this info from a friend who also saw it on the twitter...i will be unfocused for the rest of the day
YEESSS! This just made my day! I have tickets for Raleigh but just realized I can't make the trip from Asheville on that Friday. I was thinking of loading up the whole family for the SC State Fair venue to get my fix...New Years can not come soon enough. I was at last years NYE show and haven't seen a show that rocking since my days of following the Dead!
i was at the Atlanta show on Jan 1 & had a blast. looks like it's time to start planning a trip to Asheville to join the party.
Hey susie.q - are you getting rid of your Raleigh tickets? I might be interested. I'm waffling between seats and grass, but I'm too late to get any decent seats I think. What are yours like?
apologies for the earlier double post...here is the info published online by Ashvegas (our local blog...it's more credible/reliable and more informative than the paper most of the time, although i'm not sure why they don't spell it ashEvegas, 'cause it's about asheville...):
BREAKING: Avett Brothers to play New Year's Eve shows at Asheville Civic Center
DateWednesday, August 25, 2010
Sam Powers, who works on economic development for the city of Asheville, told a Leadership Asheville forum this afternoon that the Avett Brothers will play the Asheville Civic Center on Dec. 30 and 31. Powers was attending a luncheon to talk about the 2012 arrival of the Southern Conference basketball tournament to Asheville and the Civic Center.
The Avetts played the Civic Center on New Year's Eve last year, and played a three-night stand at the Orange Peel the year before. They clearly love Asheville.
Rock!

o how i hope it's true...
I got real excited about the prospect that maybe I'd convince fiance to go to this.... then realized his best friend is getting married December 30th. Sad!
Is it too soon to start whining about when the boys are going to play Charlotte? Don’t get me wrong, I love me some road trips to Asheville, Savannah and Myrtle Beach but it’s coming up on over a year! Plus my daughter is busting my b*lls to see them.
I also miss New Years in Charlotte.
I had a great time last year, I just hope it's a little warmer this year. Great way to spend NYE.
Who's buying the paper lanterns this time? 2 nights?!?! I think we'll need a few more than we had last year
I would like to go ahead and reserve facilities at Casa del Blasto. Two nights.... jeez, I'm going to need a week to recover!
Hells yeah! We might be able to take some peeps too.
I'm in, with my lanterns packed. I am happy that it'll be a 2 night run in the same city--last year was fun, but it'll be easier staying in the same place, and Asheville is slightly closer than Knox or ATL.
but, I'll get my negativity out of the way and I'll be done: I didn't think this place lended itself well to a GA show, and now it's two in a row. Wish there was a better venue, and...didn't think I'd get to this point, but wish there were seats. sigh. there it is, I've gone to the dark side. I prefer the energy of the GA shows, but that place is just too big for GA, in my opinion.
that said, I'm glad they'll be in NC for NYE, just as it should be.
"I've gone to the dark side."
WELCOME.
i am sooo happy to hear this!! last year i couldn't make the asheville show and was so upset....but now this!! haha i think this just made the rest of my year.
There were seats... up top. :o/ I tried hanging out in the GA area near the stage during the first half. But then my old self just couldn't hack it anymore. Too much bumping and grinding and pushing and strange body parts rubbing against me. And that was just from standing next to Ang!
In the end, I moved to the back and it was much more enjoyable. I'll be in the back this year with the cool kids.
I wasn't at any of the end of year shows last year, but my going is partially dependent on the set up with the seating arrangement. With the place being *that* big and after hearing reviews from last year, I hope that they don't do GA again. I also hope that the boys can open up and mix up the set list and energy. And...I too miss the Charlotte shows.
With that negativity out of the way, I'm happy the show is in NC, and I hope I can get a good ticket when the time comes. I got the time off months ago in anticipation.
Sunday--yeah, it's just getting too hard. I like that I have a mix of GA and seated shows now, but it also depends on the venue. This one was NOT good for more than 6k people, especially when 4-5k of them are on a level floor.
I look forward to meeting y'all in line. Anyone up for Avett parlor games while in line such as Avett-opoly, Avett Pictionary, Avett Life or Avett playing cards? Someone would have to make each game but we've got 4 months. I'll make one...
After two years of Avett New Year festivities, I'm bowing out this year. Fly a lantern into a tree for me.
There's a good game you can play where you read the ingredients of chapstick. That's it. Just bring fireball candy and you're sure to have a good time. Jerry? Mary Ellen? Andre? Tim? Allie? You guys there?!
@taryn HA! I had completely forgotten about the fireballs incident. So funny!
Wish you were coming, T! I even bought a new chapstick for the festivities!
I'll see you folks there!
Won't be the same without you, Taryn, but we will certainly fly a lantern in your honor. I'm already planning for this and very excited.
Hey there jcpegg, Yeah, unfortunately I'm going to have to let em go. The seats are under the pavilion roof, covered reserved seating. Section 8, Row K, Seats 27-30. I'd like to sell all 4 together but would consider getting rid of them in pairs. Asking face $44/each or $176 for all 4. I have the tickets in hand and I'll throw in insured priority mail shipping for free! Hit me up at sus8en@aol.com if you are interested! Thanks, Susie
I dont think I have ever laughed so hard than I did at the guess the ingredients game.
Wow, this has made my year!! Probably gonna have to do another solo trip so I hope to meet some of you (and have my shirt by then) . I felt a little lost by myself in MB, but definitely still worth it. Been a huge fan since 2006 and enjoyed many shows, but just in the last year got into the boards. Now I can just do this & Raleigh and not have to go to SC fair!!
Laura
(i really miss the signatures)
YES! been waiting for this update since the beginning of this year!
while i'm pumped its in NC and in Asheville ( one of my favorite NC cities).... the two night run does leave me a little hope that they'll put this in the Thomas Wolfe Auditorium.... but let me accentuate "little hope," i'm sure they'll be in high demand and will put it over in the Civic Center again, which yes, I agree with Chilix's point of view.... I'm not a huge fan of that venue in general, much less the Avetts there....
but oh well - there was my soapbox and i'm leaving it behind from here on out....
Loved Asheville last year!!!! But alas.... I too went to the dark side and took a seat up top, and it was lovely:) Great view, and I certainly got to dance! I can't wait wait for another trip to NC for NYE!!! We had so much fun waiting in line (even though it was freezing), met some great people! We're headed to Raleigh in October and counting down the days....42:)
Drew, we might need to get an Avett caravan going up to Asheville.
Tush, I would like some tush-warmed gum again this year. Can we make this happen?
captchas can kiss my ass.kl
I thought I'd be done traveling by the end of October... but, I'm getting excited about this just from reading your posts (despite the whole GA thing). I may have to try and make this one happen
just having flashbacks to last years leg cramps that carried over into the next day... and of being patted down heavily while the people in another line who hadn't waited as long ran by me. hmm... i'll have to mull this over.
Yes, the whole line situation last NYE was a nightmare, Paige.
I also remember seeing the devilish father from the New Year before who tried to STEAL my Scott bandanna (sore subject) try to dash in front of my group in line. No wonder I have nightmares about Avett lines. too far?
Chilixx...It's happening! I hear it might even be a full moon.
"No wonder I have nightmares about Avett lines." me, too! at least i'm not alone.
No one's mentioned the nightmares about coffee carafes.
Reiggin,
I think the wounds are still too fresh to speak of.
Speaking of nightmares, I'm interested that some of you have nightmares before shows. Mine started last July before the HOB Myrtle Beach. They center on the agony of standing in line and then during the performance, and not getting a decent line of vision. Yet I've mostly had either terrific seats or near stage experiences. The only bad experiences I've had were the DMB show (too far away and too brief) and Merlefest could've been better.
NYE in Asheville was one of the best shows we've seen. We succumbed to the seats, didn't bother with trying to stand, I had a good set of binoculars and was fine even without them. No, it's not as immediate an experience as upfront. But it's still great and you can rest if you need to.
Someone tell me, who was the opening act that night - I think her name was Betty?
Sallie Ford and the Sound Outside. Also, Langhorne Slim.
Thanks blasto2236. She was good and I could've sworn her name was Betty.
She's an amazing performer. Also, very humble. I had the chance to meet her briefly after the Atlanta show. She's an Asheville native, so I'm sure it was an incredible experience for her to play for a crowd that size in her hometown. Kudos to the boys for giving her the opportunity.
Sallie Ford is great! got to see her at a local show in Chapel Hill a few months ago, only about 35 people there but it was really awesome. ALSO, was at the NYE show last year and will be back for sure. It was an amazing performance.
Holy crap, I just saw this!!! Can I reserve my place at Casa Del Blasto as well? Two nights in Asheville could prove to be very interesting!
Hey Ang, you're bringing the hot java, right?
@ellie1875-Hope to see you guys around then as well!apbm
Bobby,
You and the Mrs. are certainly welcome to join us for round 2 this year!
Well, my old lady just quit her job (she was supposed to work NYE), so looks like we're more than likely down with the get-down.
Is the inn full yet, Blasto?
Do you have room for the KY contingent too, Blasto? We're pros at sleeping on air mattresses and we come with beer!
There's room for everyone! At least, there was room for everyone and more last year, anyway. I figure we'll work out the bed/couch/air mattress details after we have tickets and everything's all official-like. I've given the roommates the heads up already so they know to be somewhere else for NYE.
Thanks Ryan for the hospitality!! It will be great seeing everyone again!! I will bring party goods as well!
