NYE in Greenville SC

NYE in Greenville SC

Hey Avett fans, I just wanted to say that I'm pretty stoked to have the Avetts gracing my town with their presence on NYE. Thought I'd offer to help anyone with any questions they may have about the area.

I don't get on the boards extremely often anymore but I'll keep trying to check back to see if I can be of any assistance. Hope to see all of you awesome folks there!

Cheers!
Dave

I just tried to buy tickets for the show, and i couldnt get GA. Does anyone know if GA is sold out?

I believe the GA tickets have been sold out for a while.

My husband and I are coming up for the show from Alabama. Do you know of a good hotel, or what area is the nicest? We've never been to Greenville, so we're just sort of winging it!

Although I live in Greenville, I don't pay a lot of attention to the hotels. Check out olejesus' post in this thread: http://www.theavettbrothers.com/us/forums/nye-presale-0 ...it's about a third of the way down the first page. He has a lot of helpful info.

we're coming into town a day early to enjoy Greenville and we're staying downtown. can you recommend any chill bars/pubs or restaurants?

Sure thing... If any of you are in town early and want to find some music around town, check out this thing I'm working with called Fete Mobile Music. It's a website optimized for smart phones. Music.fetegreenville.com

Hotels:
Hampton Inn
The Westin Poinsett
The Hyatt
Courtyard Marriot
Holiday Inn Express

** All of these are right downtown within walking distance of the BiLo Center. The Courtyard and Hampton Inn are the newest having just been built in the past couple of years and the Hampton Inn is right on our downtown Falls Park overlooking the river. Honestly the Holiday Inn Express is probably the worst choice of them all but also probably the most affordable...on a good note, it's very close to the venue as is the Hyatt.

Bars and Restaurants:
If you like good beer, Barley's is a great place to go for Pizza and beer. They have something ridiculous like 70+ beers on tap and even more in bottles. Right beneath Barley's is an awesome Belgian restaurant called The Trappe Door. They also have an extensive selection of beers, focused on the Belgians. Their fries and Mayo have to be tried. It sounds nasty but trust me on this
Smiley's Acoustic Cafe always has some good music and it's just a really chill spot although it's small and can get quite crowded at night.
Chicora Alley has some really great food like island meets mexican food... I don't know how else to say it, but it's good stuff. Think fruit salsas and plantains in your burritoes They usually have music Thursday - Sat. too. You may have to ask where this place is because it's kind of hidden.
Brown St Jazz Club - a little bit of a stuffy place but still nice. They usually have a jazz band during dinner and then something a little rowdier late night.
Nose Dive - good beer selection and really unique and awesome food at a reasonable price - it's a gastro pub if that means anything to you
Compadres - This is the best mexican food in downtown in my opinion
Sushi Koji/Tsunami - two really awesome sushi bars... Koji is right across the street from the Hyatt too
Coffee Underground - cool local spot for coffee and light food
Best DT Brunch on Sunday - Soby's ...it's around $15 but it's a buffet set up and it's awesome

does anyone know how long the NYE concert usually lasts?

yellowapples: depends on how many openers there are, but TAB usually plays a pretty standard set (possibly a bit longer) with a break leading up to midnight. Then they kick it in gear again at 12!

SO EXCITED!

Last year, they didn't go on until 11:00 and I think they played until around 1:00-1:30ish.

Did they have a show start time of 8:00 last year, slseigler? Three hours seems like a long time from the start of the show to the main act.

The opener started later than usual. David Mayfield went on at 9:00 if I remember correctly.

Here are some shots from their second NYE show back in 2005.

There is no better way to spend NYE.

Cool pics, sunday! Seth is pretty wild. I wish I was a breathing time machine so I could be at that NYE show.

Will you be there this year?

Those are fantastic pictures! They totally capture the energy of an Avett show.
I can't wait to see them on NYE again this year!
I recognized Bonnie, and their dad, but is that Scott's wife playing the violin?

No Lynn, I gave up on NYE shows when they moved them out away from Charlotte. I do miss them.
Yes that is Scott's wife Sarah.
Here are a couple of videos from that show

Does anyone know who the opener(s) is/are going to be???
This is going to be my first time seeing the Avetts not at a festival so I couldn't be more excited.
I just thought they might have made an announcement earlier than this.
Hopefully they make it soon!!
Thanks,
Cole

Hi all, this is my first post! I first saw the Avett brothers at a free show in Pittsburgh in 2007. I've been reading the boards for a long time, and you all seem like such a really nice bunch of folks! I thought it is high time I introduce myself.

My husband and I will be coming to Greenville from Pittsburgh for the NYE show and we have GA tickets. For anyone familiar with the venue I have a question: There are seat numbers printed on our tickets, it that just because they have to put something there or is the floor seated?

Also, does getting to the venue REALLY early give us a better shot at being closer to the stage?

Thanks all and it's nice to meet you!!!

No seats. Pure pandemonium. I would suggest 8 hours before at min if you want to be close to the stage. There will probably be some nuts out there at 8am.

I remember the day the NYE went on pre-sale - that was nuts. Loads of people, including me, not getting the password, refreshing until smoke came from the keyboard and me yelling to my hubby, "Are you sure you don't want GA?" Now I am so glad I don't have GA. I'm not 20 years old anymore!, and this woman needs NOT to have to stand in a queue for hours - especially on NYE. This woman wants to celebrate in the warmth of a pub!

Here's a question: there seems to be an opener and the AA confirmation email says 7pm. Now is 7pm when the opener starts, when doors open for GA? I realise this may be you guys guessing, too.

Here's wishing all of you GA folks the best of luck, lots of patience and humour and a great evening. I know I'll be jealous of how close you are, so enjoy!

Thanks ncsustash. Pandemonium sounds like fun to me, and since we are driving through the night on Friday we'll probably be those nuts waiting at 8am! Smiling

I was disappointed to get shut out of the Chattanooga show since I thought the venue looked like it would lend itself to a cool show. So did what needed done and got tix to NYE's show. Only a week away and already getting excited.

@lovespokenhere, I was going to invite you to start up a convoy as my wife and I are heading down Friday night, but you might be to far East.

Ohiochild, that sounds like fun! We are debating on which way to go, Pittsburgh through Charleston WV then through Johnson City and Asheville, or take the route that goes through Charlotte and then over to Greenville. I'll message you an maybe we can figure something out. Have a wonderful holiday everyone!

was there early entry for the NYE show? i got the pre-sale GA tix, but wasn't sure if that was automatic early entry or if an e-mail went out. i can't find any info anywhere.....

k-squared...I was thinking the same thing. I thought I remembered reading that several hundred pre-sale GA tickets would be early-entry, similar to what was done in Charlotte in April. However, I haven't heard anything about how they will handle this (i.e.- numbered wrist bands). I really don't want to wait in line all day, so I hope they come up with something soon Smiling

An EE email did go out, I wasn't able to get any presale tickets but I am buying two from someone who did and he got an EE email. I thought all the presale tickets were EE, although that kind of defeats the purpose. I guess that info was on the ArtistArena page for that show - which is gone now.

I just sent an email to Artist Arena, you can't speak to anyone until after the New Year so we'll see if they email me back. Our GA tickets are supposed to be early entry but I have not received an early entry email yet. Got the confirmation email that the tickets are at will call though...I hope we're not going to have problems with early entry now.

i just hope that they don't do a string of shows leading up to NYE.
By the time they go to Asheville last year, Scott's voice sounded like s***.

He sounded great a couple of days before at the Cat's Cradle show :-)

@WillComply, Scott was actually really sick last NYE in Asheville...he still gave it his all though!

@PGfromMatthews: I emailed Artist Arena about early entry and heard back that they weren't going to send them email out till about 3 days before the event. Hope to get something soon! I need to make travel plans...

@ansleyclaire12, thanks so much...I haven't heard back from them yet so I appreciate your update!!

I don't believe all pre sale were automatic EE. I got an EE e mail last week. It did not say how many were going to be let in early.

@sundayrehab I didn't know you were at the G'boro show. Just saw your photos. Such a great show and glad you captured it Smiling See you guys in Greenville!

I'm a little worried now... I bought GA tickets for me & my hubs. The word "pandemonium" has me thinking I made a mistake! Smiling

Did anyone else see that the box office is only open M-F? We are coming up a day early to make sure we can get our tickets!

I think box office and will call are two different things. I don't know for sure but I've never heard of will call being closed the day of a show.

Ah well. Shows ya' what I know! Anyway, we get to hang out in Greenville for an extra day!

I read that Will Call will open an hour before the show begins.

Does anyone know how strict they are on the names on the confirmation email matching? I bought our tix from Artist Arena as a Christmas gift for my husband. Someone else paid for them so he wouldn't see the charge, but the confirmation came to my email. I've contacted someone at the Bi Lo Center. Just waiting to hear back.....

So jealous of everyone going. Ringing in the New Year sans Avetts just isn't as cool.

Have fun, everyone!

some info from the bi-lo center:

* There is an early entry for a limited number of guests from their fan club. Those guests have been notified directly from the fan club.

i didn't get any e-mail other than one telling me that my tix were at will-call and could be picked up, so i'm assuming at this point i didn't get early entry.

*The box office window will be open at 10am on Saturday and will remain open for part of the show. There will be a separate line for Will Call pick up. There will be worker outside prior to the doors opening up to help direct traffic. I would always suggest to pick up your tickets during the day if you are in town soon enough. There is a small short term pull in area in front of our box office if you show up early in the day where you can park and visit the box office briefly. When it is closer to show time it is suggested to park your car in a parking lot and then go to the box office.

i'm glad i can get my tix earlier in the day...one less thing to worry about! i'm not planning on standing in line all day either just to get close to the stage....almost wish i got seats instead of GA, but oh well....i'll end up where i'll end up!

@k-squared: Thank you so much for all that info! I called the Bi-Lo Center today and they weren't very helpful, but I'm glad you had more luck than me!

I am upset that Artist Arena said there would be EE for all the presale tickets and now that isn't the case. I also am not going to wait around all day, so I guess I'll just see what happens. I'm from out of town and just can't get there too early. I'm disappointed in AA, but I suppose nothing can be done.

What time are all you other GA ticketholders planning on arriving?

I'm beyond mad that we were told we would have early entry and now we just don't?!?! Is this a normal thing for AA? Now I guess we'll bewaiting out front even earlier!

I'm mad too. I have emailed AA over and over trying to get some kind of response about why they'd back out on this. I would have bought reserved seats if I hadn't been sure all presale GA tix were early entry. Sad

I'm the same... It did say on the presale day that there were 500 GA and 250 Reserved tix for the A.A. presale, and that all AA Presale tix were early entry. I got my tix during that presale. I didnt get any kind of email from A.A. either.

i'm still waiting to hear from AA too, but i've received two responses from the folks at the bi-lo center (who had nothing to do with the pre-sale stuff) and both said the same thing about early entry being limited. i also would have opted for reserved seats if i didn't think that early entry came with all pre-sale GA tix, not that early entry would have meant much if 500 people were all getting it....there's only so much room up front, and it still would have meant standing in line all day to get there. i'll be happy wherever i end up, and if make my way up towards the front at some point in the night through the natural ebb and flow of people, i'll be even happier!

Yep, we would have opted for seats as well...and I have my sister in law and her boyfriend with us this year for their first show so I was really happy about having early entry! What time do y'all realistically think we should get in line in order to be near the front...noon? two?

I'll be with quite a few friends and we're planning on getting there at 8. It's going to be a long day...

I too have been waiting on my early entry email. I emailed Artist Arena and have had no response. I called their customer service number yesterday. They have a recording that says they are closed for the holidays and won't return until 3 January. Don't like the sound of that. Maybe there will be some divine intervention and we'll get early entry after all.

I don't see a lot of value in an early entry for 500. It seems like that would be half of the floor.

The idea of EE for 500 people does seems crazy, but if AA stated on the pre-sale instructions that they were going to honor that, then they should honor it. Many of us got pre-sale GA only because of this little tidbit of information.

While I know that the Asheville Civic Center is a lot smaller than Bi-Lo, for the past two years we got in line pretty close to the time of doors opening...we were around and down the block, and we still got very good spots up front. The good thing is that not everyone wants to be up there, just us crazies Smiling Plus it's NYE and many people will be more interested in getting beers than getting that sweet spot!

So here's to all of you getting up front and having a fabulous NYE with the Avetts!

I'm SOOOO pissed with AA!
1. I got presale tix for New Year's expecting early entry, and don't have it.
2. I didn't buy tix for the Charleston show because AA's presale email said it was GA, but then after the presale, we find out its all seated.

The Avett Brothers need to end their relationship with Artist Arena.
