Official "favorite lyrics from I&L&Y" thread

I have noticed several people changing their signatures to lines from the new album.

What is your favorite line from I&L&Y?

My new faves are probably

From The Perfect Space

I wanna have pride like my mother had
but not like the kind in the bible that turns you bad

From Tin Man

And so it goes a man grows cold
some would say a man grows strong
they say life only grows short
I say the road only grows long
but as long as theres a road
my feet will never touch the ground
and if you won't give my heart back I've no need to stick around

If your loved by someone you'll never reject it
Decide what to be, and go be it.

Free is not your right to choose
It's answering what's asked of you
To give the love you find
until it's gone

i don't feel weak but sometime
i do need for her to protect me
and reconnect me
to the beauty
that I'm missing

And everyone around me shakes their head in disbelief
And says I’m too caught up
They say young is good and old is fine
And truth is cool but all that matters
Is that you have your good times
But their good times come with prices
And I can’t believe it when I hear the jokes they make
At anyone’s expense except their own
Would they laugh if they knew who paid?

Head Full of Doubt, Road Full of Promise and The Perfect Space = brilliant throughout

And they’ll be quick to point out our shortcomings
And how the experts all have had their doubts
Ain’t it like most people? I’m no different
We love to talk on things we don’t know about

stirred - I completely agree with the lyrics you chose from Ten Thousand Words, that kills me every time i hear it!

There's a darkness upon you that's flooded in light
In the fine print they tell you what's wrong and what's right
and it flies by day and it flies by night
and I'm frightened by those that don't see it.

Agree with JakeSlag for sure.

And...

From Kick Drum Heart:
I won't look back anymore
I left the people that do
Its not the chase that I love
Its me following you.

From The Perfect Space:
I wanna have friends that I can trust,
that love me for the man I've become not the man I was.

"so when you run, make sure you run to something and not away from."

Then you came back from space
With a brand new life and a different face
You took my hand and held it up
and shot my arm full of love

- and it spread

" The day will come, the sun will rise and we'll be fine "

Will I ever know silence without mental violence will the ringing at night go away?

Temporary is my time
Ain't nothing on this world thats mine
except the will ive found to carry on

They said I hope that you will never change
I went and cut my hair

and any lyric from Ten Thousand Words and Head Full of Doubt....you guys got most of em up there already!

Temporary is my time, ain't nothing on this world that's mine
Except the will i found to carry on
Free is not your right to choose
It's answering what's asked of you
To give the love you find until it's gone

And even though it doesn't seem very since we've heard the song for months, I still think this is one of my favorites:

Last night I dreamt the whole night long
I woke with a head full of songs
I spent the whole day
I wrote 'em down, but its a shame
Tonight I'll burn the lyrics,
'Cause every chorus was your name

Violent is the motion in my heart and in my body and mind
Silent is the feeling that I've lost but I'm determined to find
And love is but an ocean, an unrealistic notion
But I cling to her devotion, and I let it pull me down to the floor

I need for somethin
Nah, let me break it down again
I need for somethin
But not more medicine

Of course many of you posted some of my favorites already. But I gotta rep "Laundry Room":

Stop your parent's car
I just saw a shooting star
We can wish upon it
But we won't share the wish we made
But I can't keep no secrets
I wish that you would always stay.

And many, many more.

stirred, all three of those are my exact favorites too!!! ... along with many others, but if I had to narrow it down to top 3, those would be the ones. But oh my goodness, it's hardly possible to keep it at three. Laundry Room at my first concert was the song that sealed the deal on my Avett "conversion" so really, top 4 is quite necessary...especially this stanza:

Close the laundry door
Tiptoe across the floor
Keep your clothes on
I've got all that I can take
Teach me how to use
The love that people say you make

"And then for I dont know how long, I settled in to doin wrong"

"As long as there's a road my feet will never touch the ground, and if you wont give my heart back I've no need to stick around."

not sure i understand this one:
"Free is not your right to choose
It's answering what's asked of you
To give the love you find
until it's gone"

Any interpretations out there? Stirred?

I'm with Blasto on the Ill With Want:

"A need for something, nah, let me break it down again.
A need for something, but not more medicine."

My interpretation may be entirely different than what was intended when it was written, so take it for the whole two cents that it is worth.

Free is not your right to choose
None of us have a choice as to what we are born in and not as much control in life as we would like to think we do. Also we are not free to choose with regards to the effect our choices have on other people around us.

it's answering what's asked of you
it is our obligation to live out our responsibility to mankind, spouse, family, friends, calling in life

to give the love you find until it's gone
nuff said

If I figure out how to accomplish these things, well......I am far from it.

stirred,
thanks for the response. that is an interesting take on the lyrics and, as always, our interpretations are as unique as ourselves.
i'm just a little thrown off by the "free is not your right to choose, its answering what's asked of you."
my first thought is, free IS choice, and having to answer to something doesn't sound much like freedom to me. I like your interpretation though, and can see where you are coming from. I would say though, that we can actually change anything in our life, we have complete control of it, no matter what we are born into.
But again, these are our interpretation and opinions, and therefore are undebatable. and scott's meanings are probably so profound that they are way over my head. so, thanks for giving me your interpretation, and honestly, I sing that lyric at the top of my lungs anyways! Smiling

That's how I see it too, stirred- I sort of feel like it's a response to the dark side of that much vaunted American sense of individualism- to put it into words the feeling that "I'm free so I can do whatever I please and the devil take anyone that gets in my way."

If we are a part of something bigger than ourselves, our families, our nation, humanity- and we take our part in that seriously, well i think that usually comes with certain obligations, even if it only means you can't always get do you want because of the way it affects someone else- which of course, we can decide to not accept or fulfill- but entering into relationship, loving a person or group, choosing to be a part of whatever we are a part of, by choice or birth or chance, means we voluntarily give up some of that freedom (in a freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose sort of sense)- i think.

The "it's" is referring back to the "free," i believe, so the lyric is saying "Free is not your right to choose, [Free] is answering what's asked of you." It's a whole other philosophical/theological conversation, but there are lots of ways of thinking that find ultimate freedom in giving ourselves to service and/or to love.

That's kind of how i've been reading into it anyways.

Thank you, IWhoFollowTheGleam, for taking the thoughts from my head and explaining them much better than I could.

If you’re loved by someone you’re never rejected
Decide what to be and go be it.

this might top my old fave from please pardon yourself- 'do the best you can and that won't go unseen'

any lyrics that i think of daily- not as in sing-song, stuck-in-my-head lyrics, but ones that i think of as instructive- they are the ones that move me- and i don't know which ones they will be for a bit. but the first time i heard the above lines from HFOD, i had a hunch those might stick... and so far they have.

You all have already hit upon alot of my lyrical highlights, but one I haven't seen referred to yet...

From "Ten Thousand Words"

"I’ll come back home without my things
‘Cause the clothes I wore out there I will not wear ’round you"

This lil bit just really gets me...it's just so clean and respectful and thoughtful. It evokes for me a sense of no matter how it looks or seems , I'll always come back "home" and not lose sight of who I am or where I come from...

^^ was just about to post that very line. and the lines preceding and following it could be taken as a remark about making their "debut" after years of toil and the critical response.

"And after we are through ten years
making it to be the most of glorious debuts"

.........

"And they'll be quick to point out our shortcomings
and how the experts all have had their doubts"

"she knows which birds are singin', and the names of the trees where they're performin.. in the mornin'"

January Wedding is the SWEETEST song ever. If I were Seth's wife I'd be so amazingly flattered. The lyrics are so sweet and heartfelt. That song never fails to make me see the good in the world.

What song is the lyric "It cost nothing to be honest, loyal, and true," from?

I echo everyone who's said

"If you’re loved by someone you’re never rejected
Decide what to be and go be it."

Balladof,
I don't think it's from a song, it was from their bio on the old page, which is still on their Myspace, I believe.

"When nothing is owed, deserved or expected
And your life doesn't change by the man that's elected
If you're loved by someone you're never rejected
Decide what to be and go be it."

"Last night i dreamt the whole night long
I woke with a head full of songs
i spent the whole day
I wrote em down but its a shame
Tonight i'll burn the lyrics,
cause every chorus was your name"

"I wanna fit in to the perfect space,
feel natural and safe in a volatile place.
And I wanna grow old without the pain,
give my body back to the earth and not complain."

"Then you came back from outer space
With a brand new laugh and a different face
You took my hand and held it up
And shot my arm full of love"

"I'll come back home without my things
'Cause the clothes I wore out there I will not wear 'round you"

To stirred, WillComply, & IwhofollowtheGleam...thanks for the great posts! That's one of my favorite lyrics too and I appreciated your thoughts. Smiling

I absolutely love The Perfect Space, and it's not quite my favorite lyric from the song, but the way it's sung really hits me:
"Will you understand when I am too old of a man? Will you forget when we have paid our debts, who did we borrow from?"

January wedding seems to hit me pretty hard too..

'and if you won't give my heart back I've no need to stick around'

not sure i understand this one:
"Free is not your right to choose
It's answering what's asked of you
To give the love you find
until it's gone"

this is a great lyric, and thanks to IWFTG and Stirred for their interpretations. The only thing I'd like to add is that this lyric seems incomplete to me without the preceding line:

"temporary is my time
ain't nothin' on this world that's mine
except the will I've found to carry on."

"Free is not your right to choose
It's answering what's asked of you
To give the love you find
until it's gone"

I think both verses need to be taken together, otherwise something is missing. I wish I could explain myself better, but I am only on the edge of understanding this myself.

Last night I dreamt the whole night long.
I woke with a head full of songs.
I spent the whole day; I wrote 'em down but it's a shame.
Tonight I'll burn the lyrics, 'cause every chorus was your name.

Three words that became hard to say
I and love and you
What you were then, I am today
Look at the things I do

There was light in the room
Then you left, and it was through
Then the frost started in
My toes and fingertips
And it spread
into my heart

And I want to have friends
That I can trust
That love me for the man I've become
Not the man that I was

No longer does it matter
What circumstances we were born in
She knows which birds are singing
And the names of the trees where they're perfomin'
In the mornin'
And in January
We're getting married

If you're loved by someone you're never rejected
Decide what to be, and go be it

"The nights only get darker before your sun will shine...leave the clock alone my brother, your enemy is time."

I was about to put 'Ill with Want' Lyrics up until I saw them already. Here they are anyway. This whole album just moves me. I love it.

Temporary is my time, ain't nothing on this world that's mine
Except the will I found to carry on
Free is not your right to chose
It's answering what's asked of you
To give the love you find until it's gone

ah. <3

favorites already posted.. reading these lyrics makes me want to listen to the album on repeat lol

i also enjoy,

"Dumbed down and numbed by time and age
Your dreams that catch the world the cage
The highway sets the travelers stage
All exits look the same"

AND I WAS SICK WITH HEARTACKE AND SHE WAS SICK LIKE AUDRY HEPBURN

I WONDERED WHAT MY DAD WOULD SAY
HE SAID I'M PROUD OF YOU BOTH IN SO MANY
DIFFERENT WAYS

This thread is very apropot. I shelved this album for a while. I came back to it yesterday on my long drive home from work, and I was like, "Man, this really is a good album."

I'm my father's son, and never wanted to be like him. Therefore, this one hits home:
"Three words that became hard to say; I, and love, and you. What you were then I am today. Look at the things I do."

"Last night I dreamt all night long. I woke with a head full of songs. I spent the whole day; I wrote 'em down but it's a shame. Tonight I'll burn the lyrics 'cause every chorus was your name."

"Will you understand, when I am too old of a man?"

I concur with, "I wanna have pride like my mother has, and not like the kind in the Bible that turns you bad."

"She's talking to me with her voice down so low I barely hear her. But, I know what she's saying because my heart and hers are the same."
...
"True love is not the kind of thing you turn down. Don't ever turn it down."

Too many to name, really.

"Well, the stars felt weak, but they laughed with me, at a world where the lights go out."

Among my many favorites:

When nothing is owed, deserved or expected
And your life doesn't change by the man that's elected

Not to get all political but I think that this is a line that a lot of people can relate to in their current lives in our country at this moment.

I wanna have pride like my mother has,
And not like the kind in the bible that turns you bad.

I love this song, and there are many lyrics with in the song that I love. But this one...wow, almost hard to sing without the voice getting raspy and the eyes watering. I got a really proud mama, who's pride I really respect and wish to emulate.

"Will we forget, when we have paid our debt;
Who did we borrow from?
Who did we borrow from?"

"I wanna grow old, without the pain.
Give my body back to the earth and not complain."

"There's a darkness upon me that's flooded in light,
and I'm frightened by those who don't see it."

--
"I'm a little nervous 'bout what you'll think when you see me in my swimming trunks."

It's been posted but: "I wanna have pride like my mother had, but not like the kind in the bible that turns you bad"
Awesome....

I just realized that I double-dipped. I am ashamed.
