Old Style

Old Style

Does anyone think that the Avetts should go back old-school with their next album with more banjo and foot stompin tunes or is the direction their headed with I&L&Y pleasing to everyone?

One of the things I appreciate the most about the brothers is they are true artists. Most artists evolve with the result being stylistic changes. If they are the ones deciding which direction they go (not the powers that be) I will be happy with it. I&L&Y might be representative of the direction they are choosing.

No pretty girl ever slowed me down.

Trying to predict the direction they are going with future music is like trying to describe what kind of music they play. It ain't gonna happen. I would be willing to bet that the next album is a "departure" from the last. and that some folks will question it. I don't think the brothers even know what will happen in hte future. They are truly a work in progress.

Bah haha!
I thought the same thing.
Cubs + Old Style Beer = Good Day

This topic has been discussed a lot over here already, northbound. If the search function thingy were working, I'd point you in the right direction. I'm just along for the ride...Enjoying what has already been, resting in their present gifts to us and awaiting what is to come.

Looney - that was exactly what I thought!

I don't think they will "go back" to anything with the next album. As has been said they have a very artistic approach and neither going backwards nor remaining stagnant is part of that. I suppose it is anyone's guess as to how the next full length album will sound. If I had to guess I'd imagine the piano will be less prominent than it was on "I & Love & You" though I'm sure it will still be in play. I would probably guess that the next album would be driven by the Seth on acoustic guitar, Scott on Drums, Bob on either bass, Joe on Cello setup, with songs like late in life (newer version http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RBjxut91QJ8) and Skin and Bones (drums version http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lSOqKNIU9i4) a sample of the sort of feel it might have. But really who knows.

I don't think that looking backwards is something they do. It's always about moving forward, evolving, changing...And with reagrds to which style is more pleasing, I figured out a long time ago that I'll probably like anything they put out, whether it sounds like "I Killed Sally's Lover" or "It Goes On." They seem to be pretty good at figuring out what works best for them, so I'll go with it.

I couldn't have said it better, Luv.

Every lick of music they make fills me and my tin man with glee.

Of course, Megan said it much more eloquently than I did.

I&L&Y album was a work of art. There's no telling where they'll go next but I did kinda miss they banjo music that you hear on their earlier albums.

I'm not positive, Northbound, but so far your posts smell slightly of troll.

man - Old Style beer in Cubs stadium is a true experience.... I've only had it once, but man it was a ton of fun...

as far as their direction - doesn't really matter to me, as long as they stay true to their music and keep writing meaningful songs.... well if they product a gangster rap album - i may have a few quips about that... but who knows

Well Locust, Mount Pleasant, Concord.... LETS GOOO!

My Mom grew up in LaCrosse, my parents did a couple years of college there, my uncle/aunt/cousin still live there. So many times, driving to downtown from Cashton - passing the huge OldStyle containers painted up to look like a huge 6-pack. Ahhhh the memories.

One foot in and one foot back. But it don't pay to live like that. So I cut the ties and I jumped the tracks, for never to return. Sorry, I know that's a cheesy response. But I don't see the boys pulling any punches. I think they'll continue to move forward. No need to worry though, if any dust accumulates on that banjo, it'll be knocked off for sure as soon as they raise the curtain on the stage.

Alas, I too thought this was going to be about Old Style. The beer of the cubs although not the real Old Style:

"Old Style was first brewed in 1902 by the G. Heileman Brewing Company in La Crosse Wisconsin under the name Old Style Lager; it was popular in Wisconsin, the Chicago metro area, Minnesota, eastern Iowa, Lincoln, Nebraska, and southwestern Michigan.
The original Heileman's Old Style brewery in La Crosse is now owned by the City Brewing Company. It brews La Crosse Lager, which is based upon the original Old Style recipe and is krausened for 30 days." (Via Wikipedia)

If you can ever find LaCrosse Lager, try it. It's like a better, cleaner old style (which isn't saying much if you've had Old Style). It comes in red cans and is delicious.

I'd like to think of their new sound as LaCrosse Lager. - Once you've had it, its hard to go back to the Old Style.
