Orlando Calling 11/12/11
This was 8th show in 13 months, and easily our least favorite. Difficult environment -- late afternoon in a football stadium, only an hour to play, billed between Kid Cudi and the Pixies.
Sound was pretty bad -- could barely hear Joe, bass was too loud, banjo kinda muffled, speaker bank on right side of stage breaking up a lot.
The boys tried hard, and lots of stuff was great. Only 13 songs. almost all uptempo stuff. They knew they couldn't trust the crowd to sing a long phrase of Paranoia, as they do a lot lately.
First time hearing Closer Walk with Thee, and was a difficult attempt. Really lost the crowd, and took a bit to get it back, which they accomplished with Sally's Lover a couple of songs later.
Will You Return was great, just a little slower than normal. Head Full of Doubt was a huge hit; really well-done.
Highlight of the night was an absolutely crushed Talk On Indolence. Actually been a while since I'd heard, and they had the place delirious at the end.
First time without Bob, and our first show since Greensboro, which was one of the most meaningful, unforgettable, cherished experiences of my life. Paul did well, glad the boys were here.
See everybody in Greenville.

I actually loved seeing them this time. My last show was in Clearwater and I felt that the energy in that show was pretty low. I bought reserved tickets because I didn't want to deal with losing a decent spot in a crowd if we wanted to move between stages. Well, that was a joke. I don't know if attendance was not what they expected or that the venue was so big. It seemed relatively small, but there were really loads of people. I'm sure I could have gotten us onto the field since they weren't even checking tickets for the reserved sections, but I stayed where we were. Sucks to hate confrontation. This was my teenager's first show. While she wouldn't call herself a fan, she does play TAB's music on the piano and keeps it on her iPod. Guess she likes to be "cool" about it. She actually sang along and she represented like a good Avett fan with three fingers during ILY. I really missed being in the crowd. DD was surprised by how she could see the fans get into it. Everyone knew every beat, they knew when to clap, when to stomp. Ahhh, nothing like being in the middle...
We felt like we were all alone up in the reserved section, but it gave me room to dance and sing w/o offending anyone. Attending this show had been a hit and miss for me for a week and even up until the night before. So actually being there was nice. I didn't care if they sang 5 songs or 15. It was nice to see them again. I'll never take for granted their FL appearances after having gone long stretches between visits. I was happy with the set they played. Yes, the sound was a bit crappy in the beginning, but it seemed to have been worked out. The boys looked like they were having a great time and they were certainly covering the stage. I taped most all of Closer Walk with Thee. It's far away, but I'm glad I have it. I was proud of them. The festival had a wide variety of artists and TAB probably didn't fit into the mix of The Ettes, The Pixies, The Killers, Gogol Bordello and The Raconteurs, but I think they held their own.

I'm so glad you made it Faith, and that you had a good time! I hope you are able to make one of the Florida shows in February!
I love Just A Closer Walk and love that they are including it in their sets. I'm sure there are those that don't care for it, but it makes me happy that they still embrace that part of their upbringing. Love 'em!!
