The Perfect Space - NOT so perfect
The Perfect Space - NOT so perfect

I love the beginning of "The Perfect Space" and all the words...
then like the unexpected crashing of a car, the song is ruined with "...part 2 now clear the house..." and then reverts back to the slow song it should have been the whole time.
It's a great song as far as artistic value, but seriously, the flow of the song is ruined. I'd love to just sit and be in a mood without being interrupted by some random break.
Does anyone agree?

No.
no. I like it. I really love it live, especially.

Wish me luck, I know you think I'll need it.
For all the hardest roads we have to walk alone.
I disagree. But my ex agrees with you.
Love the break. Makes the song interesting and the return to the slow section more powerful. Excellent song, especially live.

I have rules. Never eat or drink in underwear or pajamas/Scott Avett
yea i disagree also...i think the line "ok, part two now clear the house" just kind of gets you jacked up about listening to the rest of the tune. the whole song is great. i mean do you not like in 'Pretty Girl from Chile" when they start thrashing towards the end after the phone message? think about it...haha
I think it's part of what makes TAB amazing; that mid song breakdown. It's like getting two songs for the price of one. However, I can understand wanting to relax and having that break up your mood. When I gave this CD to my Dad for his long car rides for work he commented specifically about The Perfect Space and how it scared the beejeezus out of him when they yelled "Get Out!" in the middle.

If you’re loved by someone, you’re never rejected
Decide what to be and go be it
The break is the perfect build up for one of the best moments on the album, in my opinion... Seth's second "wiiiiiiillll yooooou understaaaaand." So I disagree.
I agree with you. I think I know what effect they were trying to make with this, but still everytime it gets to that point I stop and think," Woah, why are you ruining the song!" The lyrics and style are completely contradictory with the rest of the song, screaming "get out" doesn't really belong in a song about fitting in to the perfect space.
I think it works perfectly too as it kinda of shows a person fighting their own internal emotions.
At least thats just like my opinion.

Do the best you can and that wont go unseen
I actually love the transitions and I think it works really well with the lyrics. But initially, I didn't like the line "ok part 2 now clear the house." Something about calling out that a transition was underway just bugged me. Until the first time I saw them perform it live. Don't know why, maybe because the emotion was so raw that it seemed like a more natural thing to say. Every since, this has been one of my favorites.
no, don't agree with you. The break is refreshing. It pulls me in further.
exactly tarynelaine, exactly!!
Ok so when I first heard this song I compleeeeetely agreed that I did not like the 2nd break at all. But I've def come to like it! It pumps you up! But I definitely understand how it could be a turn off
I love part 2, and alwys have. It makes the song different from any song ever made, and also in my opinion makes it complete.
I love this song. It's kind of bipolar haha. But seriously, I love having friends around. I love a good party. I love the wild crazy times of being with people "out loud" AND I am someone who NEEDS down time, quiet, SPACE. And when it hits, it's immediate. I need that space NOW. Like, please, GET OUT. lol I completely and totally got it from the first second I heard it. Sent it to everyone who knows me and they laughed...like..yep, that's how it is.

"Free is not your right to choose.
It's answering what's asked of you.
To give the love you find until it's gone."
(and they do!!!!)
Thanks bgav76 I think the song would be better if it didn't reference itself.
I know there are songs out there that do this...
ie. Carly Simon's "I bet you think this song is about you,"
but this will never be my favorite song.
Opinions differ; this is my opinion.
I'm kind of with you, Langston. I think it's the line "part two..." that bothers me more than the breakdown-maybe the self referential thing you mentioned. I think for the album it would have been better without it (or at least with different words), but I will say that I like it live.
And here is another reason to appreciate this band....
I think, "Ok, part two...." is not a transition at all. And certainly not self-reverential. I think it is an essential part of the thematic structure (sorry. I have taught literature and am smug in my reference points) of the song. It has been mentioned earlier about the 'two minds' thing. I agree.
I love this song.
It definately builds to when seth is talking about pride. that part just gives me goose bumps! i love the break!
i've always looked forward to that part of the song! how upbeat it is makes it really enjoyable for me
but the rest of the song is beautiful like nothing else, seth's parts are definitely nice to listen to after it slows back down.
i appreciate the whole song, both parts each do something special for me : )
at 1st listen i was not crazy about the studio version but the demo version from the deluxe box set is the best!
sorry dude, another vote for lovin' it. but to each his own.
I actually think the break makes the song better. without it, it would just be another ballad...

the song is not my favorite, but the middle makes it ok
that sudden shift in mood was totally disruptive when i first heard it too.
the brothers' songs often have wierd-a** elements that grate against my expectations. i like the idea, as someone said, of a musical metaphor for being of 2 minds: bringing together hard & soft, angry & loving, despair & hope. ain't that the truth.
for me, those challenging songs continue to evolve and become favorites because of that complexity. perfect space would have been boring after a few months without that break and now, after hearing it a million times, i still find it super exciting. it takes me on a ride...
i believe that the loud breaks or off hand yelling is what brings emotion to their songs, its like their saying 'HEY LISTEN TO HOW I FEEL" and your suddenly up there with them and holding on for dear life when they come done, i thinks its awesome
The "break" in A Perfect Space, in my opinion, is a huge part of what makes the Avett Bros the Avett Bros.
I don't know if I think the break is what makes TAB the TAB, however I will say it isdiscombobulating, but I do like it!
It might sound odd, but I like every song they sing. I can't say that for ANY other band. Avett's Rock, now clear the house!
I absolutely love the two parts, and I think it would really take away from the song if the "okay part two" were removed. The song certainly plays with my emotions, and I agree that going back into the slow part is even more powerful after the break in the middle. I think the song is the perfect portrayal of the Avett Brothers. Emotional, fun, and unpredictable.
I love the break! It's exactly how it SHOULD sound when you are kicking false friends out of your house.
I think the breakdown was exactly what the song needed! I have a friend who sides with you, but I think the song would almost (forgive me, Avetts) drag if it weren't for that interjection!
That is the VERY reason I love the song. That is what makes it in my opinion.
couldn't be more wrong, thats the BEST part of the song.
I really like how the break in this song has been a bone of contention for so long.. I want to keep the controversy alive!
I think the break is beautiful. Thematically (
), it makes the song.
The lack of simplicity is an 'Avett Brothers' strength. And this song is a perfect example of it.
The metaphors are all around in the structure of Avett songs- this being a prime example of how we HAVE to clear the house to MAKE our perfect space. It is all about clearing your life of fake friends so you can live uncluttered. And sometimes that takes an emotional outburst of sorts to make it happen. It's about being who you really are, and being happy about who that person is, without being hindered by the things and people that bring you down. At least this is what I think it is all about.
And I don't think it is an accident that 10,000 words comes next on the album, which seems to continue the same variation on a theme.
