Scott in Salisbury NC lecturing on Truth in Faith and Art
To all interested...My wife and myself got to hear Scott Avett lecture tonight in Salisbury (North Carolina) on the subject matter of truth in faith and art. It was a great event, a wonderful lecture, and great reception afterward. Scott told stories from his days growing up, in high school, college, and current times. He shared some of his art and a lot of his beliefs and thoughts. Wonderful questions were asked and then he stayed afterward to greet anyone who wanted to meet him. I don't want to misrepresent his thoughts so I will avoid details but just know that this man has a wonderful education and a wide outlook on life. Very heartwarming stuff. My wife and I were in the back of the line at the reception and met some great Avett Fans (one wonderful woman who had made a skirt that included the Live Vol. 3 bandana) and Scott still took the time to talk to us as if we were the first to greet him. All in all a great night and more proof of why I am a fan.....

Very Cool!! Been waiting to hear about this tonight1 Thanks for sharing!
Nice to meet you and your wife NCarolina!!!! Still processing what an amazing person that man is! Truly the gospel according to Scott Avett!
I was there tonight too. He is truly a talented man. I did notice the crackerfarm guy filming Scott speaking so hopefully it will be up soon!!
I think it deserves to be here! http://www.ted.com/
i totally agree...what a great website!!!
It was such a great night. I truly enjoyed everything Scott had to say and can never get over his demeanor! However, when talking with him, I forgot to tell him to have a blessed Thanksgiving with his family!
Goodness gracious I would have loved to have gone to this, it blows my mind how articulate Scott is about his art in the interviews I've read. Hearing his speak on it in person had to have been amazing, more details please!
Thank you all for the recaps of the night. Been waiting patiently to hear about it. What an incredible opportunity for you all to be in the audience and then meet him after. About how many people were there? And does anyone know if it was a fundraiser for a particular charity that we might be able to contribute to? And agree with dabney...more details please!!
And thanks for the info on the ted.com site....would love to see Scott on there sometime!
The event was put on by the center for the faith and arts in Salisbury. I'm sure you can google them. Scott donated a piece of art that went for a good price for a fundraiser of the sorts. I would guess the crowd was about 200. It was in a great small theater that was built in the early 1900s in Salisbury. The guy who opened was the director of the theater and talked about all the great people who had performed/spoken there. He then added Scott to the list. Scott came out and talked about how he couldn't believe people would want to hear what he had to say. These boys in this amazing band are some of the most humble people I've ever seen. His lecture started by him talking about his upbringing and his life experiences. He then talked quite a bit about his grandfather who was a United Methodist minister and Scott talked about reading his sermons. His grandfather inspired him to read Ghandi's writings (Experiements in Truth I believe was the book he referenced) and then that led him to Tolstoy (and in particular The Kingdom of God is Within You). He talked about how Christianity sometimes becomes "team" focused and that can be harmful. By the way, I agree with his critique (I am a Christian Minister). My wife and I went up to the reception and she commented that she couldn't believe that I was acting so star struck. What can I say? Man crush anyone? When I spoke with Scott afterwards I brought up that I agree with his critique of organized religion but when you are involved with the local church the good can (at times) outwiegh the bad. He acknowledged my viewpoint and talked about his own experiences in his local church growing up. I then confessed to him that while I minister to folks I sometimes get worn down and it is his music that I find relief, renewal, resurrection in. I then told him how I saw the band in Athens at the start of the year, Savannah in the summer, and Raliegh in the fall. I also told him how much my wife and I were looking forward to two great concerts in Asheville. He told me to keep up the good work and thanked me for what I do. HE THANKED ME for what I do. I couldn't believe it. Such a great person and a great evening!
I knew I knew that tatto from here lovewritesaletter, but didn't want to come across as a little wierd (which I'm sure I did anyway but oh well!)
It was an exceptional evening.
Thanks so much for sharing some details of the night and of your conversations with Scott. I wanted to attend this even from the first minute I heard about it. Had a ticket as soon as they went on sale, but circumstances just didn't permit.
How very fortunate are all those in attendance!
Man I had no idea this was going on. Very cool for everyone who got to go.
It certainly was a special night which, in my opinion, was made all the more amazing by the gallery show around the corner. How can this man be so talented yet so humble about it? It is one of the things I love about him though. NCarolina, It was great to meet you and your wife last night! I hope your mother is working on that special Avett themed "garment" as we speak. No photos please but if it does, in fact, grant her another grandchild baby photos would be welcomed!
Thank you so much for sharing such an incredible evening with all of us. It strikes me that with all the performers out there that people look up to and try to emulate, one could not find a better role model than Scott Avett (or Seth either for that matter). Two finer gentlemen I don't believe you could find.
Let's hope it makes it to the TED website. The Perfect Space for it.
It was an incredible talk, a one-man tour de force. I'm so thankful that the band apparently sent Letterman regrets because Scott had a prior engagement in Salisbury, NC! I've come to the conclusion that Scott Avett isn't human, he's some kind of angel dropped to earth. Did anyone else notice he was kind of glowing up there onstage? And how can this man be 34? He looks all of sixteen. Right living!
So funny with all the comments I've heard about how young he looks! A friend saw the pic that I posted and said, geez, he looks 12 years old! I think it must be good living, good energy and yes, good genes!
Is there any kind of a link or transcript of this thing?
I have friends and family who find the music and work ethic of the band 'clever' and 'nice'. My enthusiasm is tolerated because the music is good.
Seeing a photo of Scott reading Tolstoy just engenders smirks from the understandably cynical. I keep suggesting that this band is different. Any evidence I can send along to the naturally cynical?
The event for which Scott was guest speaker was the Center for Faith & the Arts' 16th annal fall colloquy. I am the organization's executive director, and issued the invitation to him to speak, and to also display his art at EastSquare ArtWorks (we showed 11 of his works there). We had over 250 people attend the event from 11 different states. Scott also wrote an essay for our magazine, Muse & Spirit. You can read it here: www.museandspirit.org.
sfhall--what a great magazine. I have spent the better part of the morning reading it and now have to get to work.
Such inspiration. We on this Board have heard so much about the esteemed Rev.Clegg Avett and now to read one of his sermons and a review of a book about him. That on top of Scott's essay has made for a great start to this day. Anxious to read the rest of these nuggets of wisdom when I get home.
I was always taught that when you think you are ripe you begin to rot, that spirituality is an ever evolving growth.Sometimes these philosophies make one feel different in a world where people like to see things in black and white. Where it gets confusing is that feeling different is actually the blessing and not a curse. Great to hear Scott's thoughts on it and better yet to read the inspiration and confirmation for his thoughts, the Rev. Avett.
Thank you for posting the link. I emailed you privately on some other thoughts.
Anyone have any pictures? Would love to see him "glowing" on that stage. : )
They requested that people not take photos or video.
sfhall, thank you so much for the link.
It's wonderful being able to hear the perspectives of the artists you admire the most on not just their work, but the meanings beyond it. Ironically caught your post just minutes after completing a 'spiritual journey' paper for a religions class. Perfect way to cap off the night, and a wonderul magazine.
This night was unforgettable. what a gentleman. inside and out. Seeing someone tear it up on stage with a banjo then to hear such exceptional words from a small place in salisbury was amazing and so heartfelt. Wonderful night with wonderful people! and cheerwine!
It was a nice experience to have as a first Avett experience it dove into a more personal and intimate setting than just any show, and I think it will help every little word they sing sink in even more. Scott has to be the most humble and down to earth person I've ever met, he is one of those people who speaks into you instead of at you. I feel kind of bad that he got cut off talking to my friend Mandy and I it seemed like he was intrigued by the conversation. The gentleman he is apologized though it wasn't his fault. His artwork is amazing, very inspiring.
