Scott's tuning
I'm not sure if I am going to be able to explain/ask this properly since I don't have a background in music but here it goes. Does Scott play his banjo out of tune sometimes? If so, is it done on purpose? Or am I just hearing some notes that are flat or sharp that I am not used to hearing that often? One example that comes to mind is at the end of PGF Locust. It seems to have a lot of sharp notes to me. Some others just sound out of tune. Even though they sound odd, they also fit the song they are in and gives it more character. If I am correct on what is being done, is it a common thing for banjo players to do?

I have a banjo and it rarely stays in tune. The picking and strumming will knock the tuning around, especially Scott's aggressive and energetic playing style. I noticed he will try and tune before and most of the time during their performances. But it's hard to keep it perfect. The studio recordings have never sounded out of tune to me, just the live ones.
Not sure if this addresses your question but the bros often tune down a half step so if you are trying to play along it won't sound right. Put your capo on the first fret, tune your instrument, then take the capo off and you'll be in tune.
