Seth's Electric Guitar
Seth's Electric Guitar

For those that are as curious as me about The Avett's equipment, Seth has been playing a classic player Telecaster Deluxe with the tremolo removed. I am not sure what color it is but you can view it (or buy it) at this link.

Very nice. Thanks mattyic. I didn't pay close enough attention during Slight Figure of Speech on the ACL feed, but does Scott play a different electric than the one Seth plays on The Perfect Space? Or is it the same?

i'm pretty sure Seth's Tele is vintage and I'm prety sure it was a fixed bridge (could be wrong on that). Scott was playing a Gibson hollowbody, 335 I believe. If you really want to get into some gear, Seth's new McConnell acoustic guitars are insane... I've been talking with Jordan McConnell (he plays guitar for The Duhks) and makes the McConnell guitars with his father in Winnepeg for the past few months. Just sent a deposit in to get one made. They're all custom one of a kind pieces. Stoked to say the least.

During the Orange Peel run last year, Seth had a very similar looking Telecaster, but it wasn't vintage. It was the 72 Thinline Reissue. Semi-hollow with dual humbucker pickups! I know this because I used to have one just like it! I think he only busted it out for The Fall, though.
Oh and Bham,
The guitar Scott plays is definitely different. I read an article recently that said it belonged to the father of a good friend of his, who recently passed away. Scott has been using it in his honor, especially on that song, since Charlotte.
Cool, thanks for the info Blasto. That's a nice tribute by Scott.

Yep, Seth's is definitely a Tele Deluxe. I'm almost certain it's vintage, otherwise it's been refinished. The reissues of those guitars that came out a few years ago have been available in Black, White, Sunburst and Walnut, and none of those finishes quite match what he was playing at ACL. I cant find a picture of it now, but it looks to have been a natural finish which is one of the finishes that they didnt reissue.
Having said that, the resolution on the video wasnt great and that could have been messing with my perception of the colour.
Scott has been using a bunch of different guitars over the last year or so.
Ive seen him use a couple of Guilds, a Telecaster Thinline (with Humbuckers), a 335, and a BB King Signature Lucile! Sounds like some one got G.A.S. (Gear Acquisition Syndrome). It's very serious, and the only known cure is your wife!
Tenderstems,
As mentioned above, I believe the Thinline tele is actually Seth's. To my knowledge, Scott only has the one Guild, but recently has done some more engravin' on it. And also, as mentioned above, the BB King signature guitar was given to him by a friend.
I do know what you mean about gear acquisition syndrom, though. I have been there many times myself.
ive seen two different guild s-100s one has the original acorn engravings and the other has flowers that he did

I think it might be two different guilds, But I cant find any decent pictures to back up my claim!
The one pictured in the Emotionalism album art work, I think it had engraving near the bridge where the strap pin goes. I cant get to an album right now to look though. The more recent Guild (that I saw this year) had no carving there, but it did have carving on the upper bout, bass side. Which is what makes me think he has two.
I saw one of those Guild's may have at one point had a Bigsby on it, but I think that may be more likely the newer one if indeed there are two.
Oh Good! So I'm not going crazy! Thanks S.A
I was about 5-6 feet away from both guitars in Toronto Wednesday night and I'm pretty sure Seth's Tele is vintage...it's been around a while anyway. The guitar Scott uses on SFOS is a 335 and sounds great!!!! I've wanted one for years, probably my favorite guitar of all time.

Thanks for clearing that up, David. Looks like I may have been wrong on the Tele, too, unless Seth's arm is covering the F-hole, but I swear I saw it!
No, thats the same Tele I saw. It's a thinline but every trace of the F-Hole has been remarkably covered by a well placed arm!
Didn't he play an SG too, with the personal engraving, similar to his acoustic? I swore he had a red SG in Chicago's HOB show this summer when they did The Perfect Space... but I could be going crazy too.

Thisheart,
Those are his Guild guitars, they just have the same shape as an SG.
Oh, gotcha, rad guitars. Thanks blasto for clearing that up! Are those indentations custom, or does the guitar come that way?

The tele thinline I remember him having was baby blue or maybe mint green, not to say that he tele in the photo is not one. It is hard to keep up with all the gear they haul around now.
he also plays this tele which to me looks like a 72 deluxe. not sure if it's a reissue or vintage.

Talby,
that's the same one he played in Toronto last week, and I can say that, from 5 feet away, it's no reissue.

Scott just bought the Gibson a few months ago from my friend at Elderly Instruments who happened to have opened for him at the Holt Riverview show last year. Super nice guitar.
uh...i am kind of leaning towards the reissue side. if i remember correctly the tuning pegs looked like the reissue ones. some one link a picture of seth playing the tele.
Here is the link to McConnell Guitars. They have pics of Seth's custom made acoustic guitars. Stunning!

this might work, pinckpunk. let's hear what you think. I based my prior statement (maybe too boldly) on the overall appearance and aged look of the guitar. not necessarily an educated guess, I suppose.

Stunning custom job. The Duhks rule. They've played Alaska twice and I've been out of state both times. Lame!

The Duhks will be at the Orange Peel in Asheville soon. I forget the exact date and am too tired to look it up, but I plan on going just to see the man that makes Seth's guitars, having never heard any of their music. Anyone in the area that's interested should check it out too!
The Duhks will be at the Shakori Hills Grassroots Festival this weekend along with Chatham County Line, The Gourds, Jim Lauderdale, Holy Ghost Tent Revival, Donna The Buffalo and about thirty more bands. I HIGHLY recommend the festival. I also highly recommend the Duhks. Having seen them many times they are always a fun band and seem to be very nice people. Here are some photos from a Duhks set at Shakori 07.

Just to clarify on the black Gibson. It's not a 335. I'm nearly positive that it's a 355, based on the binding, the varitone switch, and the gold hardware.
too darn similar for me to tell apart. I guess I'm out of my league in this discussion. oh well, damn fine guitars and damn well played!

The black one is a BB King Signature. So it's a 355 without the F holes.
well all you have to do is see the "lucille" script inlay in the headstock to realize that it's a B.B. King Signature, but those guitars all based off of the 355. you can get a similar 355 model, although there are some character marks on the signature.
Addicted-thanks for posting that picture! you know what i think that it could be an original. there is no reason why he wouldn't go out and buy an original versus the reissue. fender has some great reissues though some, that are really convincing. but from that picture it looks to me like an original.
however i've thought i've seen pictures that show made it look like a reissue! ha ha
