Signing to American/Columbia records...thoughts?

Signing to American/Columbia records...thoughts?

I'm so happy!!!!

RICK RUBIN - this is a huge deal! i'm freaking out right now.

Yeah i just got the email. Well first when i saw that Rick Rubin (he gave Johnny Cash a new career!) is on board as producer, my jaw dropped. When i found out they're making the jump to a major label my heart dropped. I really really hope the Avetts will stay true to them selves in this conversion. But thinking about it, The Avetts as they are right now wouldn't be able to get mainstream radio play. And a major label's main objective is increased popluarity, and increased popularity in their eyes=Radio play.

I'm worried. Please please please Seth Scott, and Bob, please stay true to yourselves!

But then again, I am a worrier.

Ok i just realized that American is the label Johnny Cash was on during the 90's/early 00's. This does make me feel a bit better.

Oh my god, I am still in a complete and total state of shock. How did they go from small dive bars and sunday afternoons at grassroots to a major record label?! My only hope is that such a catapult into success has no effect on country thrash stylings that I have watched develop into pure genius over the years, and that they stay true to those who have been following them since day one.

I have very mixed feelings about this. I have enjoyed much of Rick Rubins production work with several different artists over the years. He seems to have a knack for letting the unique sound of an artist shine through on their album. Many producers have a "sound" that they imprint on albums which would be a major problem for the Avetts I think. Having a producer that will let them do their thing is great.

Singing to American however is less then thrilling. Two of my favorite bands have gone through the ringer on American and i'd hate to see that happen to the Avetts. That being said they have a long history behind them of deciding their own fate from a buisness standpoint so i can't imagine that they would sign a deal that wasn't very very favorable for them. Only time will tell. The upside of a major label is more exposure and making it easier for people to hear you and get your album. The downside is a loss of control. We'll see where it goes...

uhm...hello....

let's all thank Ramseur for all they've done and expect more and more amazing artists of theirs to grace our ears, eyes, hearts, and minds.

Thanks, Andy (it's Andy, right?). The compliment is not taken lightly.

Ramseur Records is very proud and excited for this new stage in the Brothers' career and we will continue to be there, every step of the way.

And a side note (to everyone) - don't worry! Scott, Seth and Bob always have and always will stay true to what is in their hearts. No matter what.

Ramseur-
Is Joe counted in on this new excursion?

Avett Brothers and Ramseur Records... class acts all the way around!

Thanks for the announcement. It feels like we're part of the family and the process.

...Nothing but excitement, best wishes and a firm faith that honesty, loyalty and truth will continue uninterrupted!

I think that this is incredible news. I am thrilled and I think it validates everything we've all known all along about the band. They are top-notch artist, ready for the world.

This wonderful news comes to us as a result of hard work and dedication by both the band and their management. I applaud and congratulate all.

Bravo.

:ninja:

Wow. The guys really are rock stars now, aren't they? When reading they had "been in the studio for a week" I didn't picture Rick Rubin around them at all...
He (Rick) seems to be behind a lot of the music I really have gotten into over the years. Bravo to Columbia and American for seeing the talent dripping from TAB.

What a step for them! I'm excited to hear where they go from here musically, and hope this change isn't too drastic for the boys and their families.

Bigger label means bigger venues and bigger and better opportunities, but I'll miss the more intimate shows. I hope they can keep those up, at least some of the time.

Watching your friend get a promotion is awesome, until you see the increase in workload and responsibility. I'm thrilled for the band, completely, and they've earned this type of recognition... I hope it's everything that it possibly could be for all of them.

Kudos to everyone at Ramseur...

Yea, it's Andy. And I really do stand by what I say. Growing up in metro atlanta (a factory for smaller label artists hitting it big), I've seen WAY too many artists sell out and go main stream. Getting to communicate on these boards, emails to Steph, and meeting the guys themselves, I'm confident that they're true to their roots.

They have truly been blessed to be with Ramseur Records. You've done amazing things for them and vice versa. I'm sure I speak for all Avett fans when I say "thank you" and we expect more and more amazing artists to grace us in such a way the Avetts have done.

sidenote: I got a warm-fuzzy from their news....and I'm sure I'm not the only one

very happy for the avetts (very happy for dolph in back record sells).

very sad that "my little secret" will not be so secret anymore.

this is, to me, as sad as jawbreaker going to geffen.

God bless the avetts, dolph and the rest of those who helped them get here.

im excited and worried at the same time. i think the bros. have got enough recognition to call most of the shots even on a big label, but you know how them corporate guys are. hope its for the best. thanks so very much ramsuer. you are a great label and will continue to shine i know.

Congrats to the Avetts! I hope they make the music THEY want to make. Wether it's electric, acoustic, or synth Polka! I'm sure they will make an amazing album!

Amazing. I'm incredibly exicted for the guys. Congrats.

eh. to be completely honest rick rubin has produced some pretty terrible music. he's also ruined some bands I formerly enjoyed.

with that said, it's awesome they're getting this opportunity. with their recent explosion from the emotionalism album I'm sure we all more or less saw this coming. selling out their first headlining date at the crystal ballroom was proof of their soon to come rise to the top!

Well I have to say I have tears in my ears right now as I write this. I am so happy, and excited for the the Brothers. I'm happy that they are going to get the pay off for all their hard work, talent, authenticity, and enthusiasm. I'm extremely excited to see what Rick does with them. I have a feeling we will see a shorter album (9-13 tracks), but it will be power packed and mind blowing. I'm also so excited that now many other people will get to experience them. There is not one bit of sadness on my part that my "secret" is out. I mean I already tell everyone I can about this band, and try to expose as many people as I can. These guys have single handedly changed my life, and the way I look at the world. They make me laugh, cry, and shout, and that's usually just in one song. I mean why wouldn't I want everyone in the world to be able to share in the fabulous gift to the world that the Brothers are??? I have no doubt that they will stay true to the music, and emotion that they have always played for, and I can't wait to see what happens next.

Let's raise a glass to a fantastic group of hard working artists, getting the break that they so deserve!!!

This is quite a wild / awesome step for the Brothers and much congratulations are in order to everyone in the AB / Ramseur camp!

I wouldn't worry about "selling out" -- I don't think that phrase is in the band's vocabulary. They've kept control of almost every aspect of their career up until now and I have a hard time believing that will change.

What will change is the exposure and avenues that their albums will be sent down. This may be difficult for some fans who have held the band close to their hearts to accept, but it's a necessary avenue for growth.

In this time of turmoil in the music business, it is heartening to see that Columbia would choose to sign a "career artists" such as the Avetts, instead of a flash in the pan, hit-craving entity. We see it every time we go to see the band -- that energy, those single fans who have brought ten of their closest friends who in turn have each brought ten of their closest friends to these concerts. This is how it should be, and I believe that this energy will be rewarded in the long run.

Congratulations Bob, Joe, Scott, Seth, Dane, Justin, Dolph and Steph!

THIS IS AWESOME. A much deserved reward for both the guys and Dolph. Even Sam Philips had to let Elvis grow. No more ceiling for either party. I am truely happy for the boys! Makes me appreciate the early shows even more now. Hey Conan, the next time someone calls you about The Brothers = pick up the phone! Tell Rick Rubin that if he works hard and gets lucky that The Avett Brothers just might make him famous! hahaha John in Charleston

Can anyone give a short overview of Rubin for me (us)? All I can think of is Beastie Boys, that he is supposedly working with Metallica, and of course, Johnny Cash.
Is this the label The Black Crowes started out on? Those guys were great for an album or 2. I have much more confidence in the Avetts than the Robinsons.
Will miss the early years, but that's just me being selfish and nostalgic.

I think it's awesome that the Avett Brothers have gotten this opportunity! I'm excited to see what's in store for the fans!! Congratulations guys!! You deserve it!!

WOW!!! I am not worried at all. I think we all knew this was going to happen some day. Those of us on these boards that have had the privilege of meeting these guys know they are very intelligent individuals. I am confident they guys have made a decision based on what they think is best for them. I’m sure the decision wasn’t made on there own. I would almost guarantee that it wasn’t an easy decision for them to make. I feel lucky to have seen them in a lot of smaller venues. I remember thinking the first time I saw them that they were going to be big. They have always had a huge respect for there fans and I don’t see that changing at all. I know some of us were hoping to keep them for ourselves but they are definitely cut out for larger things. Lets be honest, the world needs to hear the sweet Avett sound. Good Luck boys. Ramseur Records will always be on my radar. They have some amazing talent on there label. I'm glad to see you will still be involved with the boys on the management side of things. Thank you for bringing the Avetts to me. They have inspired some of my paintings and also to pick up a stringed instrument, ok three.

I think this is fantastic news! I have been a fan of Rubin's work for many years. I recently read this article about him:

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/09/02/magazine/02rubin.t.html

the visuals are great...I can just picture Scott. Seth, Bob and Joe really thriving in the described environment.

I just felt every emotion possible. Proud, excited, ecstatic, nostalgic, hopeful etc. As a fan you can’t help but be proud of these boys, having followed them since 2006 they made me feel a part of them, a part of the journey though the music & in some little way make us feel like we had a little part in this huge success! & for that I’m nothing short of thankful! I will miss the small-town venues no doubt, but this is very much deserved accomplishment. Stay true boys!

See you in Cary!,
Bre

Avett Brothers: Please don't sell out.

BTW great show in Rochester!

First and foremost, congratulations to the Avett Brothers and Ramseur Records. This is huge news. I'm really excited to hear what comes out of working with Rick Rubin, but let's face it, I'm more interested in the Avett Brothers than Rick Rubin. I can only imagine how intense the show at Cary is going to be now.

I wish you all the best, and I have no fears about the guys "selling out." I do have one question thuogh, what happens to this site?

I'm thrilled about them working with Rick Rubin! I wonder if they will ever be able to re-release the older out of print albums though now that they are on a different label.

I am so excited my heart is jumping up and down. This is the journey that we all began when we "found" The Avett Brothers. I am over joyed that this has finally happened to them. They deserve it!!! Maybe now the world will be able to find what we all have... a love for a band that makes us feel. I am happy to share this experience with them and all of you, and I am looking forward to more people "finding" The Avett Brothers. Mad Love to the Brothers!!

I want to thank Ramseur Records and the involvement they allowed the fans to have up until this point. TAB has served a gateway to loads of new music and Ramseur has been at the center of that. I have been introduced to many new bands (i.e. Paleface, Bombadil, Will Hoge, The everybodyfields, Langhorne, Jessica Lee Mayfield/Chittlin, etc) that I am forever thankful to TAB and Ramseur for being the vehicle of that introduction. I can only hope that each will progress forward making music just as great as it has been in the past. I look forward to the new chapters for both and have a feeling that we have not seen the last.

I got chill bumps when I read my email.
This is great news for the guys. They deserve every bit of success that they can earn. The music business is tough, and this is an incredible opportunity for them, and their families.

Rick Rubin! Babies.. before we're done here.. y'all be wearing gold-plated diapers!

was this a sale a la sam phillip selling Elvis to RCA for $35,000 in 1956?

Congrats to all, and thanks to Ramseur for getting these guys where they are today.

From the first moment I heard these guys I knew this day would come. I wish them all the best and I hope they are able to continue the magic they have. Thanks for the great shows and music, you guys light up my days!

HourofJealousy: this site isn't going anywhere!

that's a relief!

Wow.
Awesome.
Congratulations to everyone. Working with Rick Rubin is really an incredible opportunity.
Rubin really does strike me as the type of producer who adds to the music of the artists he works with and doesn't try to change what they do.
The record label deal is also an awesome opportunity but one that might change the music more than the opportunity presented by Rubin.
I'm sure whatever deal was struck was done favorably and intelligently. Money has never driven the music and I'm sure they didn't sacrifice creativity for cash.
And who am I to nay say on such a huge step for publicity. As someone pointed out earlier a lot of us spend our time trying to get the band as much exposure as possible. If you were constantly trying to get people to listen there couldn't be a better group to help get the name out there than a big label.
This band is special, different from other bands. I've heard them differently on record, seen them be different on stage and I'm sure that they'll be different when they sign with a major label.

Congratulations again.

P.S.
What is Ramseur Records involvement in the new deal?

From what I read on the Ramseur Records website it looks like they will still manage the band

My brain, you were in it. Well put. Im interested to see what input Ramseur has as well.

Well All I can say is CONGRATS to everyone involved. The guys success is in no way anything that we all didnt see coming...ya know? I mean with a band of such talented artists, something like this was bound to happen. I commend them, Ramseur Records, and everyone involved. WHat an exciting venture...I mean Rick Rubin! AWESOME!-Justin

I think that Rick Rubin's beard growing abilities may have had something to do with it as well.

In all seriousness, this is great.

Rick has worked with a TON of artists....
Danzig
Public Enemy
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Slayer
Smashing Pumpkins
Tom Petty
AC/DC
Lil John
Jay-Z
Beastie Boys
Justin Timberlake
Neil Diamond
Weezer
NIN
LL Cool J
Mick Jagger
RATM
the list literally goes on and on He is about as prolific a producer as there can be.
He and Russel Simmons formed Def Jam records....
He also was the person who said RUN DMC should record Walk this Way with Aerosmith....

wow... i am so incredibly excited for the guys... i think we all knew this was coming, they are the most talented musicians out there...you dont just listen to their music, you feel it right down to your core, and really that is what its all about, music should conjure up emotions and make you really feel alive. i know they do that for me like no other band i have ever heard...i wish them all the best and i really believe the brothers will always stay true to themselves and their fans...they are the real deal.

From everything I know, talked about, heard, etc. The Avetts and Ramseur Rec. have been extremely careful from the beginning to not get themselves into a bad situation, like we see with so many artists today and have I'm sure whatever the deal, it was thought out thoroughly

things will definitely change - however, as we know - "it costs nothing to be loyal, honest, and true..." so I'm not worried about the music. The Avetts will continue to write great music - it will not just have the influence of the most famous producer of the past 20 years.

Congrats all around to Ramseur Records, Avett's and Company....

Wow, - WOW....I am still in shock! Looks like everyone has already voiced my thoughts, I hope they don't sell out, I hope Ramsuer Records is still a big part of their journey, I hope the public will accept them as they should (I'm reading Blink-Malcom Gladwell), I hope I don't turn on the TV one day and see them...well whatever..It's a great step ahead! They are so deserving in every way!! But I'm a little worried, they were always that 'diamond in the rough' kind of thing I held so dear and near....I'll guess I'll learn to share
This does lessen my chances of ever talking with the boys, that's probably why I feel so uneasy...

Congratulations again to TAB, everyone with Ramseur, and the tons of other people who have helped them get this far!!

How many times have we all browsed the radio looking for something decent to listen to, wondering why the Avetts aren't all over the airwaves improving everyone's day? How many times have I watched MTV or VH1 and said, "What would happen if the Bros had a video playing right now? How much would it shake things up to hear their music being played alongside all the junk out there right now?"

After all the word-of-mouth exposure, all the fanatic support, all the evolution of the band over the last 6+ years, they are again moving to the next stage and I can't be more happy for them. Sure, it'll be sad not seeing them in the local dive, playing their hearts out to a few dozem people, but hey, I was able to experience that and witness their musical and popular growth firsthand. The band grows and the fans grow. The Beatles moved out of the Cavern Club. Their music changed, their fans changed, the band grew.

The Avetts have been around awhile. They are not a band that is being created by a record label to sell a million records because the industry is crashing. They have a fan base. They have a catalogue of phenomenal albums. They have always placed their musical integrity as their #1 priority. I seriously doubt they will lose sight of that.

I want them to sell out: sell out the Beacon Theater, sell out of albums at Best Buy, sell out downloads of their videos for everyone with an ipod, sell out of dvds at the Virgin Megastore. They tour nonstop. They create a new gem of an album every year. They play with their hearts and souls and I can't wait to see what happens when the new record comes out and the world gets a taste of what these boys have done.

Thanks Dolph and everyone at Ramseur for creating such a strong foundation on which the Bros have been able to so freely work. Congrats, Avetts on the integrity with which you have built your little empire. You deserve everything that's coming to you and we, along with all the lucky fans-to-be, are fortunate to have you as a beacon in a rather dark time in pop music history.

Sorry for the diatribe. I'm just so proud of these guys.

Can't wait to see you at River to River on Wednesday!

Cheers!

I am stoked for everyone involved. "Sell out" isn't in their vocabulary so I don't think anyone needs to worry about that. Congrats..I love you guys mary
