what did the cover sound like?
Something about downtown and rolling around .....?
Erica and I are here !!!!
Scott confirmed it was Way Downtown by Doc Watson
Great show, pretty small crowd, and loved the setlist. They had a ton of energy, and I thought Joe was on fire tonight. I taped most of the show and will post once I get them uploaded this weekend.
Lovelikethemovies, were you able to get video of Telling Time?
Telling Time, Solomon, PPY--very nice!
glad you girls made it down there.
Wow! Fantastic setlist. Average People --> Telling Time --> Murder would've done me in... let alone being tucked in the middle of the rest of that! Sounds like an amazing night.
I was there last night. Flew in from LA and it was my first time seeing the band. I felt lucky to be part of such an intimate crowd, but the show was full of energy. Didn't disappoint. What songs in the set list are new originals?
Thanks chilixx, we were so glad to be there!
Lotus, I did and I'll post once I'm back on regular internet
I got everything except Salina and Tin Man, although the sound was a little off on Seth's mic in the beginning, so not sure how the first few songs came out.
Pretty Little Curls, that was my favorite part of the show. Really beautiful versions of all 3 of those songs. I'll post video soon!
TIA for sharing the vids. I appreciate everyone who takes the time to record and share these with the rest of us.
hey pretty little curls, where did you find the videos?
my wife and i saw our first avett brothers concert last night, and it was UNBELIEVABLY good.
i would love to see some videos of the night!!
thanks
I was the one who requested Please Pardon Yourself. Man it meant so much to me that they played it.
nice going, nate. i always love PPY. i wish they'd bust it and pretend love out a bit more often.
Thanks for posting, was hoping to find it!
First time seeing them, many more to come if the future is kind to me.
Born and raised on the other side of Charlotte from 'em.
Ok folks, finally got all my videos up (per the band's stance, I didn't put up Die Than Grow, and the sound wasn't too great on Paranoia and HFOD RFOP, so I skipped those too). Some of them are a little shaky in the first few seconds when I was trying to calm my excitement enough to tape, but I did my best, especially during the faster songs
Enjoy!

Nate, were you in that big group of people who took a picture with Scott? I was your photographer
I think your sister was behind me during the show, and she and her friend were so sweet. I loved this version of PPY, so thanks for requesting.
Wow! Thank you so much for all of those, lovelikethemovies! Looks like a really great show. I like the way they've reworked Telling Time a bit. I think someone from the Portland show described it as more jazzy? Not sure if I like it better this way, but I do like it.
Yeah i sure was. I was the one in the blue t-shirt. thanks so much for taking our photo! Yeah my sister said you were really nice and gracious with the people around you. (in regards to space.)
Thanks lovelikethemovies for all the vids!
I noticed "Salina" was missing, but I'd already found it: http://youtu.be/rhwcz-TzqwQ
lovelikethemovies, thanks for Solomon. I haven't even watched the rest yet, but that song just about kills me. So, so great.
Do I remember that they've asked not to post videos of unreleased songs on the internet? I would hate for that to be the reason if they have held back on experimenting new material at shows. Did I watch it, yup, did I love it, yup.
Am I remembering about this wrong? I'll think about it while I re-watch.
Wobs, there's a lot of grey area there right now (still) it seems... and no formal policy on the board which is a love/hate scenario for most of us who want to share/spread the music/vids/etc but don't want to go against the wishes of the band.
A certain video-makin' cohort of mine asked Scott after a show in our favorite month last year and his answer was perhaps not a yes, but more like an acknowledgement that "they're out there" and a surrender to fighting the whole youtube thing.
) multiple times in studio settings, Tiny Desk, Laundro Matinee, etc... which while that does not really make these $-generating album releases (and probably most of these rarer songs never will be), they are indeed out there for mass consumption.
Once they're played, they're definitely out there. And with the obviously conscious choice to play those songs in public, they do in a way become released, albeit not formally.
Note that they've played Down With The Shine and Telling Time/Can You Not See (or name the song?
I think that the boys started playing some of them to try them out, even as they themselves considered the song(s) unfinished. In the process, they grew to be cherished by the fanbase through post-show chatter and a few smuggled (or not) vids here and there. I really think that most of these won't ever be released on a normal studio album. Maybe a Rarities, Covers, & B Sides type of release later on, but for now...probably not. They're one-offs and they're great, but that seems to be it. So now what?
Until we have an official policy, I think we're all leaning towards being respectful of these "unreleased songs" but what about the "they're never gonna be released" songs?
Are they never, ever to be shared?
So um...there's my non-answer/ramble for the day.
miss you ang
You're all more than welcome - I love to relive the shows afterwards, but I also tape so I can share the experience with those of you who can't be there. And don't we all wish we were at every show?
CoffeeBomb, this is exactly how I feel: "a love/hate scenario for most of us who want to share/spread the music/vids/etc but don't want to go against the wishes of the band." I hesitated to post Solomon and Telling Time because they haven't been officially released, but went ahead because there are a lot of versions out there, including the ones you mentioned (and this video of Solomon seemed to be somewhat "official": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HsraIXo-Iys&sns=em). I drew the line at Die Than Grow, because it's a new song and not really out there yet, but it's still a hard line to draw. I know this has been debated many times on the boards, and I'm never quite sure what the "right" thing to do is. If the general consensus is that these shouldn't be out there, I'm happy to take them down. I think once we have the official policy from the band, this will all be a lot easier. I'm just trying to spread and share the Avett Love, but of course don't want to do it in a way that harms more than helps.
I almost wonder if the vague policy isn't actually a good thing. It promotes an environment where the fans are conscious about what all they put out there and are careful not to cross that 'line', whatever it is, while still encouraging the sharing of such a great experience? I think I've warmed up to the vagueness. I've never seen a more loyal fan base that respects and defends and loves so much and I think they know this. nice work ya'll.
Yes. I think the vague policy is a good thing for the very reasons mentioned above.... however, not everyone is as aware/loyal as some of us are here. Then again, those folks probably aren't taping the shows in the first place, are they?
Miss you too, Wobs. I'm def in for Pickathon next year (if i'm not off on deployment somewhere)....and I'm bringing Mitch, so....you better make it, too. That goes for Apple and Skittles too. Hell, the whole Avett caravan...it's time we stop saying "maybe next year..." and all just go.
Oh and Nate, happy to take your picture. Hope it came out ok
Your sister was a great person to be near at a show - hope she had a great time at her first one!
Thanks for posting the set list. I was happy and delighted to hear 4 songs I never heard before. Great show, great crowd and very friendly people. Loved the Vegas show.
Lovelikethemovies, what happened to "Go to Sleep" video? Private now?
Added three pics from the Vegas show here: http://bit.ly/AvettVegas
Ang, yeah, Pickathon is highly likely--I'm assuming for Skittles too, it's been discussed. :)--though it's so far away, I'm not exactly booking my plane tickets yet. A more complete reunion needs to happen in 2011. (though I'm glad I'll see you in Raleigh and maybe another show or two in October?)
My opinion, for what it's worth (nothing), I agree with Ang--I think if they have an official recording out there--DWTS, Telling Time, etc, it's fair game. Personally I'd refrain from uploading anything brand new/unreleased unless it fell into that category. I've wondered, as Wobble said, if the videos being uploaded of new songs within hours of being played is why we aren't hearing as many new ones. But if they feel strongly about it, I wish they'd come out with a policy. Not that it'd be that enforceable, but I know a lot of fans would respect it. But, yeah, maybe the vagueness is there for a reason.
On the other hand, I do watch the stuff that's up (I can't hold back like some of you do, to wait to see/hear new songs before I've seen them live) and selfishly, I am not willing to record myself, so I am not judging.
Does anyone else think the apparent renaming of Telling Time means it might make the next album? I would've said no since it's missed the cut as far back as Four Thieves Gone, but on the other hand, it does sound a bit different now, so maybe they feel they've made enough changes to make it album-worthy.
I don't remember exactly what was said about Telling Time also being called PG from Michigan. I think someone said it was written on the set list? Do you think maybe they had planned on playing the instrumental, PG from _______ and just substituted Telling Time? Or did it actually say PG from Michigan/Telling Time?
Also, did they (TAB) ever call it Can You Not See, or was that just what the fans called it until they heard an official name?
stirred, I seem to remember there was a picture of the set list that said "Pretty Girl From Michigan (Can You Not See)" Now I'll go try to find it...
Edit: Okay, nevermind. I apparently made that up and then imagined a picture of the setlist in my head, which is obviously very weird. Carry on.
Edit part deux: Here's what timdog said on the portland setlist thread: "As far as the PGF Michigan thing, that's what was written on the setlist on stage. The setlist said "PGF Michigan (Can You Not See)" ... I guess they can't figure out what the heck the name of that song is..."
So I'm not quite as crazy as I though, but that still means I just read that and then pictured the setlist in my head...
That answers the other question, also! If timdog is correct, then I guess it just wasn't fans that called it Can You Not See. Thanks!!
Yep, Kat, there is a photo of it, you're not crazy. Joe handed it to HAsh after the show and she uploaded a photo to FB. it's just kinda funny that Scott specifically called it Telling Time in that LaundroMatinee session, and they mentioned it as that in the video shoot--yet the setlist had it as above.
Ah, thanks chilixx. Really thought I was losing it.
@songbiscuit, I'm not sure why you can't see Go to Sleep. I don't have it marked private or anything, so maybe YouTube is just spazzing a bit? It looks like it has less views than my other videos from that show, so it probably just got uploaded weird. The sound isn't great in that one, but the energy is
@chilixx, I sent you a PM
Thanks for the videos, lovelikethemovies!
