Smoke in Our Lights

Smoke in Our Lights

I've always liked the song "Smoke in Our Lights," but hearing it live a couple of weeks ago at the Merrillville show really turned me on to it big time. Today I offer a TAB for this song:

NOTE: This is a PDF that you can open and print:
http://squarezero.org/music/Smoke_in_Our_Lights_AVETT.pdf

There are a couple chords I'm not completely sure about -- in particular the G/B in the chorus. Seth actually plays something up on the fifth fret that I haven't quite been able to figure out (some form of G or possibly D).

But that B root sounds right when playing solo (without bass or banjo).

I've also noticed on some videos (I used this one especially) that Seth sometimes plays something like a C2 (x32033) in place of some of the C's.

Enjoy. And please post any corrections here.

Thanks for that, especially the banjo part.

The great thing about trying to cover or write chord charts/tabs about the avett's music is that you don't have to necessarily be right on which voicing of a chord they're actually playing. I'm a guitar player so it may be different for banjo but from my experience I just try to get the progression down pat first. Then after I'm comfortable playing and singing that I might start throwing in some extra stuff.

the (x32033) is a pretty common C chord that can be used after G (320033) and it easily transitions to D as well (xx0232) or (x00232).

I've noticed that Seth likes to throw in Cmaj7's (x32000) or (x32003) from time to time.

I don't have my guitar in front of me but that G/B sounds like some kind of dominant 7 chord. Maybe G7 (323003) or (320001). Those aren't the right voicings for how he's playing it in that video but the only other possibilities it might be is a different voicing for a C7 (x32310) or possibly a B7 (212002).

Looking at the video again he is around the fifth fret so maybe it's some kind of d minor voicing (50056x) or maybe an A7 (505600). Not sure there man but there's some things you can try out and let me know if they work.
