Songs You Would Like To Hear The Avett Bros Cover
Songs You Would Like To Hear The Avett Bros Cover
Posted: Friday, January 1, 2010 - 22:38
I know this has been brought up sometime before on here, but as i was driving back from asheville today still basking the the previous nights glory i got to thinking about this topic.
What songs would you like to hear the boys cover?
The Replacements- "Can't Hardly Wait" i think would sound amazing done by them, especially with their beefed up (more electric guitar/drums) sound. i can also just hear joe doing some sweet riffing on the cello to this one.
What else do you all think would sound good?

Replies for this Board Topic
I don't really know. They've defined themselves enough that its hard to imagine them doing something other than their own. I did though like the "Our Year" cover.
Oh I think I can speak for several of the board members when I say Bron Y Aur Stomp by Led Zeppelin.
^ that would be a sweet one
highlight, this is meant for fun, not trying to take away from their own material (i preach about the quality of that daily) but it'd be funto hear them rework some other people's stuff into their own version of it.

They say you gotta lose a couple fights to win, its hard to tell from where I'm sittin.
I saw we fish 5 days and work 2.- Bahamian proverb
in that case, probably something slow and smooth.
Tangerine by zepplin... Or Misty Mountain Hop...
just cause i think it could sound really cool...
I'd like for them to cover Little Ghost by the Whits Stripes... or maybe some Jack White stuff from the Cold Mountain sound track.

"My words trickle down, from a wound that i have no intention to heal..." -Simon and Garfunkel
little ghost would be amazing
i really liked the our year cover as well.
i thought it really captured the mood of the night and the end of their successful year
Yea any Zeppelin would be amazing.
They did an amazing version of How Many More Times in the middle of this Old Joe Clark youtube video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dREqDHBg6KI
Call me crazy, but any early Alabama or R.E.M. would pretty much make my day.
--
"Happy's not the word, you make me free."
ALABAMA yeah mentonelee!
tin man says Freebird
This list could be ad infinitum.
But given their choices in house music befre the 3 recent shows, any Blind Melon or Sex Pistols.
No Rain, or Anarchy In NC?

I agree Nate, Blind Melon's "Change" would be totally amazing
--
"The day will come, the sun will rise, and we'll be fine"
ha, anarchy in nc would be amazing, maybe not in a good way though.
NastyNate, you and manderfrog are exactly right. Blind Melon would be perfect and Change would be the best song. wifeoftinman, would you please tell tinman that I've got a Freebird for him...lol

"Happy's not the word, you make me free."
hahaha, mentonelee , let's keep a nice Avettude
I think they would do a great cover of Grant Lee Buffalo's song- Mockingbird.
Black Crowes, Jealous Again
I also think Chris Robinson should be a shoe-in to produce their next album.

maybe this is cliche, but something by the beatles would be fun. or a gillian welch song her song "caleb myer" or "wrecking ball" would be interesting.

i was a one line wonder in my own love song
they should do the weight by the band
rlove3, Have you heard Justin Townes Earle's version of "Can't Hardly Wait"? Very nice. And Rambleonrose, there's a cool video of Gillian Welch and Old Crow Medicine Show doing "The Weight". I'd love to have a copy of that for my iPod.
I had a dream last night that I was in a hardware store and they were playing the Avetts. I was so excited in the dream about hearing the song, but when I woke up, I realized it wasn't an Avett song, but a New Grass Revival song, "One of These Trains". It really worked, though (in my dream, anyway). It's a pretty song, and I'd love to hear them cover it. I can imagine Seth singing the John Cowen harmony parts.
Change, Time, or the Nico version of Soup would be cool... hell, there's so many tunes. My favorite has still been Bob Willis' "Stay All Night" @ the OP last December. Maybe some Hartford, or "Molly's Lips". I'd really be blown away to hear Cody Chesnutt's "Boylife in America" or "Eric Burdon". That'd be a curveball for ya! I'd REALLY had loved to make it to Louisville a few months ago, and seen them pick with Yonder a bit. That didn't happen, but it would have been kick-ass if it did!
yeah, lilybear, thats where i got the idea
Moonshine Whiskey by Van Morrison...
Some ol' cowboy tune?
Maybe Tex Ritter's "Rye Whiskey?"
I dont know I feel like Kenny Rogers The Gambler might be pretty good
MMM Bop, and I can die a happy girl.

I don't really know why...but I can imagine it....
Second on The Weight; one of my favorite songs to hear covered. Heard Derek Trucks and his wife Susan Tedeschi close a show with it and it was amazing.
I know they already cover Townes Van Zandt with Greensboro Woman but after hearing Scott say that if he could only have one album it would be Flyin' Shoes by Townes Van Zandt I can't help but wish they do more of his material at some point.
lovewritesaletter...I'd love to hear that!
I had a friend who moved out to California. He drove out of his way so that he could call us and say, "I'm standing on a corner in Winslow, Arizona."
They would do an amazing job with any of pete seeger's old stuff like what bruce springsteen did on his "We Will Overcome / Seeger Sessions" album. Or anything off the O Brother Where Art Thou soundtrack.
And obviously as many people stated... Zeppelin. Please. Hahaha.
I can also see them adapting a lot of the Beatles music to their instruments in a very unique but still enjoyable way. I'm not a big beatles fan but I think some of their songs would lend themselves to the Avett Brothers very very well.
Also, the song "Down Among the Wine and Spirits" off Elvis Costello's new album "Secret, Profane and Sugarcane." (Which is up for a Grammy, I suggest you all check it out)

here's the elvis costello song. not the best quality but you get the idea.
I can TOTALLY hear that in my head, Lovewritesaletter. I think you nailed it.
Yes...Blind Melon....maybe SleepyHouse.
Yes...Black Crowes (but like something off Southern Harmony album or Amorica)
Torn and Frayed...Stones.

I have no selfish memorandum...no confusion for me.
I say this everytime the topic pops up.
Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain/Willie Nelson

there's only one thing here worth hoping for
Here's another that I would LOVE to hear http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gHPZuQTNoCo
Boys...are ya out there lurking???
I would be if I were you...I think...
The Replacements- "Can't Hardly Wait"
Best cover of that song is by The Clarks, an indie-level band from Pittsburgh... or, Pennsylvania's native sons.
I'd like to hear old country songs of the 1950s.

spen640,
They also covered "Highway Kind" by Townes Van Zandt during the year end run in 2008. I know they definitely did at the Orange Peel. Did you guys get to see that in Charlotte the next 2 nights as well, for those that were there?
I agree that there are a couple other songs I'd like to hear that take on. Blue Ridge Mountains is one, for sure.
Far From Me by John Prine. I would die, with a smile!

Love has been waiting - patient and kind...
I'd love to hear a smooth version of "Snowin on Raton" by Townes Van Zandt. They could swap out verses for Seth & Scott to sing and the harmonies on the chorus would be great. Plus, Joe's cello & Bob's bass work would add a lot of that song.

@shegetsby most anything by The Replacements would be so kool...made me think of this one...sorry for the "rockband" version...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FXNN7PkViRs
anything by townes van zandt even though they've covered him once
"the weight"by the band although a lot of bands have done it i think the brothers could lend the perfect vocal harmonies for the song
change by blind melon would be amazing thats probably my favorite blind melon song
i think it would be cool to hear them cover a guy clark song as well, it would be amazing if bob sang randall knife
the weight is one of my favorite songs ever. it would be tough for them to pull off but I think seth is proficient enough on piano and adapting the banjo and cello would be so freakin cool.
Hotel Yorba/White Stripes
I've always thought there should be some sort of collaboration w/Jack White
--
there's only one thing here worth hoping for
Wagon Wheel
Johnny Cash "Ain't No Grave"
Yes, the weight!
and also Me and Paul by willie nelson
I think that The Avett's should record a mountain Christmas album. Anyone agree???
--
The Offering
They played Highway Kind at the Belk on 12/30/08, if I remember correctly
--
-- What ifs hot on my trail, but they can't catch me.
i like the idea of more "roots" country. i'd also like to hear them explore more of their punk roots. i think "ball and chain" by social distortion would be a good one, its even got a bit of that west tx swing already in it. did yall catch the youtbue video of them covering "glory days"? i'd love to hear them break that one out in concert or the jessica lea mayfield's "for today" which they're covered on youtube.
