Hey, I was wondering if there are any Linux lovers like me in this community.

I brought my home computer to work so our MIS guy could do some work on it. He wanted to put Linux on it so bad. It's like he owns stock in the company. What's so great about it?

Well, it's kind of like you try it out, get hooked, and can't stop preaching it to everybody. Maybe it's the feeling that you're different and special because your part of a community. Maybe it's simply just a cool OS. ummm...the cool thing about Linux is that there's so many distributions out there and it's all mostly free. There are some companies that offer gauranteed Linux products, like RedHat, Novell -- these you have to pay for. But most are free and open source -- meaning that anybody can change anything about the operating system. This way, a whole community of computer geeks all work together to produce the best possible computer experience. There's updates all the time, new stuff every month. You're not stuck with delayed and silly releases of Microsoft. But it's an OS for those who like to get their hands dirty and mess around with the computer. It's a lot of fun to me.

Though, honestly, I'd ask the MIS guy to show you what he wants to put on your computer to see if you like it first. It's got it's differences from Windows and Mac.

Mac OS X is the best of both worlds (in my opinion). I've worked on Windows, Mac, Unix, VAX, Linux (Debian, Redhat, knoppix to name a few) and the new Mac OS X is hands down my favorite. It is Free BSD Unix underneath so you can get on the command line and do all the stuff you want to do with linux but it also plays nicely in a "windows world". 6 years of computer science education and 8 years in the industry - I'll never go back to Windows, and the Linux distributions would have to become more widely accepted before I would go there - at least for my main computer (I have a linux box for doing dev stuff)
