TAB CHRISTMAS ALBUM: Another Hypothetical Question

TAB CHRISTMAS ALBUM: Another Hypothetical Question

Ok, if the Avett's were to do a Christmas Album, what classic Christmas songs would you want them to cover?

The answer "all of them" does not count. LOL.

can "none of them" be an answer?
i'm already Christmas song-ed out.

Silent Night and O Little Town of Behtlehem, recorded in the Avett famly living room like the gospel album.

The Avetts are a rare talent, timeless yet current, and capable of singing straight to a single soul while broadcasting to the ever-increasing masses.

can "none of them" be an answer?

exactly...

x-mas albums are to make money and thats about it - not really much heart behind it - in my opnion

Well Locust, Mount Pleasant, Concord.... LETS GOOO!

@Drew52Deal

Exception to the rule - Sufjan Steven's "Songs for Christmas."

Its one of my favorite albums of all-time, even though it is a Christmas album.

Too true, Drew. While driving back to work from a dreadful lunch meeting, I got our office manager to listen to some TAB. Ok, so she had no other choice, because it was my car. But she liked PG San Diego and I noticed her tapping her foot to Slight Figure. She then asked if they had a Christmas album. I told her they didn't, to which she replied, "Why not? Christmas albums make lots of money."

I don't know...I kind of like the idea of a Christmas album. I don't imagine it would be very traditional sounding, but I think it would be a lot of fun. From them it's fun, from 99.99% of everyone else, it's for money. I think they could do "Little Saint Nick" pretty good, since I can hear slight Beach Boys similarities in a few of their songs. I've never really thought of the details, but I think I would enjoy listening to something like this if it has the same feel as the gospel album as opposed to the polished feel of "I And Love And You."

On a somewhat related side note...did anyone watch Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer tonight? It was on CBS, and for the first time ever, I realized that the snowman narrator (what's his name...Sam or something? whatever...Burl Ives.) picks up a banjo during the song "Silver and Gold" that he sings for Klondike Cornelius, which, in fact, has no banjo in it if you listen closely. Just thought I'd point it out and see if anyone else noticed.

I have always loved all things Rudolf. Which makes it really bad that I almost hit a deer last night, but that's another story. I didn't notice the part about the banjo, but it will give me another excuse to watch it again. When I was little, I had it on tape and watched it year -round.

ok, I'm going to be really awful here. please forgive me:

ok, i'll meet you guys halfway.
how about a Ramseur Records Christmas Album?
that way, the different artists can change the sound up and keep it more interesting. but no "traditional" songs.

That sounds good too. That's a pretty good compromise, WillComply.

And, Annie: that is hilarious! Both kind of lame and pretty funny.

I knew this thread was going to pop up again soon. It's become a real holiday tradition for me after 3 years now.

'If we make it through December' by Merle Haggard.

What's up with non-traditional? I would love to hear the boys interprate my favorite seasonal stuff.

I love my classic Christmas music- I've got my Charlie Brown Christmas and my "Classic Christmas" mix (Bing Crosby, Nat King Cole, etc.) in HEAVY rotation. I love it, and will wear it out.

And as for non-traditional, Dave Matthew's "A Christmas Song" is at the top of my list for best lyrics- it remains incredible. The boys would strike me dead where I stood if they ever covered that.

With the covers I have heard them do, like "That's How I Got to Memphis"... not alot of changes, but its just much better the way they do it.

So I would have to say, traditional Christmas songs by the Avett Brothers (and possibly the family too) would be unbelievable!

For those of you on the "None of them because Christmas albums are just for making money" side of the fence I implore you to check out Barenaked Ladies - Barenaked for the Holidays. It immediately became one of my favorites. They put their own spin on some holiday classics (probably the greatest version of Jingle Bells ever) and wrote several Christmas and Hannukah originals (Steve is 1/2 jewish) that are not just filler but really great songs.

It also includes their much aired version of God Rest Ye Merry Gentlement / We Three Kings with Sarah McLaughlin.

As for the Avett's, I'd love to hear them do Little Drummer Boy or, as a novelty, Mele Kalikamaka (Hawiian Christmas).

I was thinking about this the other day... one of my favorite traditional Christmas hymns is "Lo, How a Rose E're Blooming" but I'd like them to just rock it out to Little Drummer Boy or something pop-friendly.

Sidenote: Sufjan Stevens' Christmas box set is so cute and wonderful... and it comes with stickers and a coloring book!

My sister and I just had this conversation a week ago. It was Black Friday and all the Christmas music was almost driving us crazy when she looked at me to say "What if the Avett's had a Christmas album?" Then large smiles spread across our faces as we imagined what it would sound like. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy Christmas music, but working in retail will realllllllly wear you out on the usual Christmas tunes. An Avett Family Christmas album would definitely be welcome to my ears. I bet the boys could come up with some excellent original songs as well as cover the classics. I doubt it will ever happen, but one can wish, right?

Oh, and Katie, if they covered "Christmas Song" by DMB I would also probably drop dead wherever I was as well.

I wish for it not to happen b/c I do feel like it's usually about money. I think I'd be on board with the Ramseur artists idea, or something similar--where they contribute one song--ideally something that is going to charity like those "A Very Special Christmas" compilations.

Wish me luck, I know you think I'll need it.
For all the hardest roads we have to walk alone.

Ditto chillxx - a rockin' cover for charity would be cool...

*ANY* TAB Christmas song cover would be the ultimate alternative to the sea of emotionless repetitive crap that's been put out there for us to cringe to for 7 weeks of a season that has many of us fed up with the music after week (dare I say day) 1.

I'd so love to see an Avett Brothers holiday record with original songs. Along the line of The Waitresses' "Christmas Wrapping" which is the ultimate contemporary Christmas song (so far, anyway).

I was so bummed to see Dylan released a Christmas record. So *+&^$%# startled and bummed. I understand he has grandchildren now that he was doing it for... I love Dylan beyond words, but what I heard is so lame. ugh. so lame

EDITED TO ADD: When I wrote this I had no idea Dylan's Xmas album was for charity. What a relief. I am no longer bummed.

May you never be embarrassed to sing.

You do know the Dylan X-mas album is completely for charity right... anything charity is cool with me no matter what it is! However it did chuckle a bit when I got the e-mail about the album... Dylan can do what ever he wants because he is Dylan!

Pretty much anything off of "Oi To The World!" by The Vandals would make me super happy.

I said last year that if I ever saw Scott Avett in a Santa hat, I would be disappointed. I think Christmas albums by "popular" artists tend to be schlocky, awful and an obvious grab for cash.

That said, I think it would be awesome to hear the Avetts sing "O Holy Night," my favorite Christmas song.

--
Ain't it like most people, I'm no different, we love to talk on things we don't know about.

heids, in that note, I think I'd like to go to a Christmas Eve service with TAB and sit in front of them... so that way, when the hymns are sung, I could hear them myself. And it would be pretty spiritual and heartfelt too.

Dfrench, I did not know that! Updated my post. Thanks for telling me.

I didn't even know this existed! I wish I had girl named Mary down in Susanville...

How funny would it be to see the Brothers cover "Santa Baby"? haha. Bob Dylan is the only artist I've heard really pull off an X-Mas album well though, imo. It would deffi be a challenge for the Avetts, but I know they could do it.

shegetsby--that would be cool. Smiling
Heids, as I think I've told you, that's my favorite too. If they did do the ONE song for CHARITY (the only thing I could handle), I'd like to hear that, though I'm not sure which I'd want to sing it, or if it fits either of their voices well.

Heidi, I gotta' say...if I saw Scott in a Santa hat, I would probably be very excited...like lose all my brain cells excited, which I'm aware is completely irrational. As a serious understatement, he's not unattractive, and I think that would be very cute.

Hey Avett Family,

I was just wondering. Now, I know that a bunch of you were all not for this because "it's all about the benjamins". However, I do believe they can do it even if it is for the AVETT NATION. Something not for sale but just so we can enjoy the holidays that much better. What do ya say, Ramseur???? Furthermore, I REALLY REALLY REALLY like the idea of doing a Ramseur Christmas album. I think it would be amazing no matter how you spin it. As long as it is not for a profit. I still want to hear what yall think though. Keep them coming.
KC

Two that would be fun, "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus" and good old "Frosty the Snowman"

She'll be drinking someone elses rye, when I'm six feet below.

"That said, I think it would be awesome to hear the Avetts sing "O Holy Night," my favorite Christmas song."--heids

Yes, please! The harmonies on that would be amazing!

Maybe by the end of the "12 Days of Avett" we'll have a TAB cover of an X-Mas song?? Smiling We can only hope!

I'm a Christmas Music Freak! In my dream-Avetts Xmas album, it'd be a mix: some mellow classics magically enhanced by their gospelizin' voices (What Child Is This, It Came Upon A Midnight Clear, etc.) AND some rowdy fun-tracks (have you ever heard the Do You Hear What I Hear/You Really Got Me mashup from the "Christmas Party with Eddie G." album, it's a blast, and the Bros' could really rock it out!)

Also, since we're talking prime Xmas tuneage, I must Highly Recommend the Reverend Horton Heat's "We Three Kings" CD, just great retro-swinging guitar-slinging stuff (and totally G-rated!! which is surprising for the Rev)

Ho ho ho!
