There's so much to do in that town, you'll have no problem finding something. Off the top of my head I can think of about 25 things.

"I'm a little nervous bout what you'll think when you see me in my swimming trunks."

nice TAFKAM and glad to see you back around these parts...

but he's exactly right... I'm heading up early in the AM..... I really enjoy just soaking up all that is Asheville... I typically just walk around town, see shops, local Art galleries and listen to musicians in the street... weird? maybe, but i just love that town.... I'll defintely be found hitting up Tupelo Honey for some type of breakfast / lunch food, Bier Garden for some ice cold adult beverages, Yacht Club for more choice beverages, Mellow Mushroom for some lunch or dinner and this one spot thats was an old bank, but now a restaurant.... I'll also be seen getting a warm cup of coffee or apple cider at the Double Decker bus and probably stop by the wine / beer shop just up from the Orange Peel... A lot to do, but I got 24 hours, so we'll see... maybe hit up Bed, Bath, and Beyond, Home Depot, but I don't know, we may not have enough time....

If you are looking for some type of fun, outdoorsy stuff, you can always drive out of town and go to the Parkway, see the Biltmore..... but yea, there is not shortage of cool stuff to do....

Well Locust, Mount Pleasant, Concord.... LETS GOOO!

Asheville is the most beautiful place on earth.

Nice post Drew...Old School!

Be Kind, For everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle.

I go to UNC Asheville and walk around downtown almost every weekend. Its best to just walk around without any "real" plans and just see what you get in to.

Now on a similar but different subject, where to eat in Ashville. Like the small mom and pop shops and the hole in the walls.

Go Vols!

mellow mushroom if your into pizza, i have no idea about other resturants

TEdwards,
Mellow Mushroom is a chain, and the service in Asheville is awful. I know a lot of people like it, but I've had bad experiences there, and I could name you a half dozen better places to get a slice in town. If you like BBQ, check out 12 Bones. Only open from 11-4. but they have some awesome food, and are pretty well known locally. If you're looking for pizza, West Asheville is a little out of the way, but Digable Pizza is the best in town.

Additionally, some great places to eat downtown : Doc Chey's, Jack of the Wood, The Thirsty Monk (great beer, too!), and about a million other places. If you're looking to spend some money, there are high dollar restaurants in the area, too.

i can only vouch for the one that was somewhere in charlotte a few years ago...
thanks for the info blasto,
i like the sound of digable pizza

Tupelo Honey is a famous spot in Asheville but there is always a wait of at least 30 minutes..... there is also a great spot, right beside Tupelo Honey
( thats starts with an "M" thats good too.... both are right down from Civic Center and right at the square on Patton Ave

12 Bones is ridiculously delicious. Barley's Taproom (across from the Orange Peel) has good pizza and excellent selection of local beer. The Mexican restaurant next to Orange Peel is extremely good and cheap. Salsa's is pricier but VERY good - and always interesting local art displayed. Save Tupelo Honey (and the place next door - I can't remember the name either) for an amazing breakfast. You can't help but enjoy Asheville!

I can't believe I forgot Barley's! That's a must, and the upstairs has pool tables and is smoker friendly. No one under 21 allowed upstairs though, the downstairs is the family establishment. Also, Mo Daddy's next to Mamacitas (the aforementioned Mexican place next to the Orange Peel) is good too.

Gotta throw in my recommendation for Early Girl Eatery. I make sure to eat there whenever I'm in Asheville.

Sorry to keep posting in this thread, but I just got word from a friend of mine that Cook Out is opening it's Asheville location on Tuesday! So there will definitely be a good place for everyone to get late-night eats at a cheap cost after the show. I've never been to one, but according to just about everyone I've talked to about it, we're lucky to have one in Asheville now.

12 Bones is unfortunately closed until Jan. 20th, so don't anyone plan on eating there when you come to Asheville.

Yes, Cook Out is the absolute ultimate most awesome-est burger joint evar. EVUR. Their milkshakes are slap-yo-mamma good.

Going to New Year's Eve in Asheville?

Cook Out!! Where else can you get a chicken sandwich combo with a corndog and chicken nuggets as your sides?!

"If I were walking through the rain, and I hear you call my name, I would break into a run without a pause."

I do the burger/corndog/fries combo with a Cheerwine float WAYYyyy too much unfortunately. It's hard to beat that deal ($4.69 with tax!). The problem with a NEW Cookout is like when it came to Wilmington (finally) this year. The lines into the place are murder for the first couple of weeks. After the new wears off you can zip through as usual, but initially it's like the hottest spot in town.

Yeah. Fortunately there hasn't been a big ad campaign for it or anything. I only knew about it because my friend is managing the place, and most people I've talked to about it had no idea. Maybe we can keep it secret til New Years! Smiling

i agree with how good cookout is, when i have people ask me if cookout is a good place to eat i always respond with the same answer. " any place you can go and get a cheeseburger with a side of corn dog is truly on to something".

Plans have changed for us a bit, and Branch is coming to Asheville (NOT THE SHOW) just the town... bringing a babysitter with us... etc. Any recommendations for...

a) a places with TVs so we can catch at least a little of the VA Tech vs. TN game- places that are NOT our hotel room, preferably Smiling

b) a place for an early dinner that B can come? i.e. NOT A BAR. also, i'm veg, which throws a kink in everybody's plans, but thought that might stir the minds of those similarly inclined. i know that the same people that own Black Cat (Boone, NC) own another place in Asheville under a different name? any help with that? it's not downtown, but, damn good.

Katie - no worries on Vegetarian - just about every place in Asheville has a vegie option and I know there are some straight Vegie / Organic spots, but don't have the names - sorry....

As far s the game - I'd suggest watching it over at the Bier Garden ( right down from Civic Center)... it's a raelly cool bar and lots of TVs out in the main area at the entrance.... I"ll be there for sure

I had no clue the folks who owned Black cat had a spot in Asheville.... Black Cat is my favorite burrito spot of all time.... nothing beats a "Don't be a Jerk" w/ chicken and spicy salsa...

barley's and the asheville pizza and brewing company is good for pizza. eddie boudreuxs next to barley's is pretty good too. good bbq and sandwiches. early girl is great as well as mamacita's (the mexican joint next to the OP). pretty sure the place next to tupelo honey's is called college street pub, never ate there only drank and its good too! you can't go wrong with downtown avl.

They say you gotta lose a couple fights to win, its hard to tell from where I'm sittin.

I saw we fish 5 days and work 2.- Bahamian proverb

College St. is not that great of a place. I believe the place next to Tupelo Honey's mentioned earlier is on the other side. Never been there, but it looks like a decent cafe/bistro.

I was going to throw out the Early Girl Eatery as well, but LittleDeadHead beat me to it. We ate breakfast there the morning after the Avett show in Dec. 2007 and it was great. I'm glad to see it's still in business.

Drew,,,every Mellow Mushroom I've ever been too has lousy service, so after seeing your review of the Asheville one, I'm thinking it must be a pattern...Oh well...wish I could make it to the Asheville show with everyone. It's the one I would like to hit up the most, but I will settle for the Atlanta one instead....Not that I'm complaining. Haha.

I wanna live, and I want you to live happy and free

gotta agree - most mellow mushrooms I've been to weren't amazing at the service, by anymeans... so i just usually only go when I'm not in a hurry and taking my time....

Well Locust, Mount Pleasant, Concord.... LETS GOOO!

I once placed an order for pickup at Mellow Mushroom. The estimated time for pickup was one hour and 45 minutes. Now that's a little steep on it's own, even for a Friday night. I get there exactly one hour and forty five minutes later, only to discover they have yet to even begin making my pizza. I then proceed to sit there for another 45 minutes while I watch the stoners in the kitchen wreck countless pizzas by punching holes through the dough, having to start over, etc. 2 and a half hours later I finally get my pizza...and it's not the pizza I ordered. I won't go back there anymore. I've made pizza for a living, it's not THAT hard.

Drew- I'll see you at the Bier Garden! AND, whomever else will be there...

I'll be with Tennessee fans and Tech fans- Branch will be the tiny little Va Tech supporter. Jury's out on which team I'll support, but I bet I'll be wearing a VA Tech shirt.

I'll be with my sister, who looks like me but is pregnant, her bearded uber-masculine husband, and with Parker and Branch. Come say hi! I want to know all yall in real life. Even if my real life is a little subdued with the kiddo Smiling

Blasto - I wouldn't step foot in there ever again, if I were you.... thats absurd.... but I still dig it

Katie - I'll see ya there
