On Tour with John Mayer

Geez, what's with all the negativity? It's a good thing when the Avetts get an opportunity to bring their art to a different audience. No?

I am excited about this news. I'm not sure what I think about the man, himself, but I love his album, Continuum. I love his songwriting and well, his guitar work is incredible.

I can see your point but it's still disgusting all the same.

I predict a looooot of haterade being spilled on these boards over the next week to ten days. Looking forward to seeing who comes out of the wood work to scream "sell out" and tell us how the Avetts just aren't the way they used to be, and all you have to do is look, they're touring with JOHN EFFING MAYER.

--
Ain't it like most people, I'm no different, we love to talk on things we don't know about.

I'm pumped for the opportunity for more people to discover their music, agree that it seems like a weird combo, agree that John Mayer is an amazing musician, but I will be going to three of those shows JUST TO SEE THE AVETTS.

have not been a huge fan of mayer in the past couple of years but I will never say anything negative about the boys. i do have to say that some of these fb comments are pretty funny.

'cause all my mistakes, they brought me to you"

The only reason I'm bummed is because they are playing a show near me.... Which means I now have to deliberate whether or not I can muster up $70+ to go see them play in a huge amphitheater for 45 minutes while people are talking and drunkenly yelling over the music... I'm leaning towards no.

To those that are really upset: Do you forget that just a few short months ago the boys did a short tour stint with Dave Matthews? Did that change the boys or their music in any way? Nope.

Take a deep breath.

i look at it as another time i get to see the brothers in ohio. they can go on tour with Justin Bieber for all i care, as long as the tour comes to ohio.

The Avett Brothers with Justin Bieber, Miley Cyrus, and GWAR would be a hell of a show.

those who don't like it, sorry bout your luck. don't go to these shows. no sweat.

those who really really don't like it. well. sorry bout your luck. but glad it'll be one less person trying for good presale ticks.

John Mayer admitted to playing dungeons and dragons in a Rolling Stone article or some such. Haven't listened to him much and don't know how he interacts w/ people or fans or media, but seems like he couldn't be too too pompous after that. though I guess i've known some pompous DnD players. they were weird people.

Was not expecting this, and not too pumped about it either. My summer schedule is allready full of great shows but none of them are TAB, and its looking like it will stay that way.

Hey. No Bieber hatin'. Love that little guy! Sticking out tongue

@ kateb i'm so with you about drunk people talking during the opening act. not to mention a lot of these mainstream JM fans will probably not enjoy TAB music, I would over hear them say something bad about them and then we would have a problem.

I do have to confess my mom still loves john mayer and bought me and my sister tickets to go with her to the nashville show for christmas. was it a horrible show, no, would i have gone if it was not a free ticket, NO

If it's an April Fool's joke, like some people are implying, it's cheating to do it on March 31!

Mayer did bring an 11 year old kid up on stage to play a song with him, which was pretty awesome.

@iwhofollowthegleam. Really? you don't know how he interacts with the media. Did you totally not see the whole Playboy intv, or that he has been more talked about because of his tweets and because he is in US weekely apperances than because of his music. I'm all with you on if you don't want to go then don't go, but i will come out and just say it, over the past 3 or so years John Mayer has been a total douche. But like i said i'm totally with you on if you don't want to go don't go. I live in nashville and if this show was in nashville and i could pay 60 just to see TAB open i would for sure do it.

"But I can't go back, and I don't want to,

Heheeee,...this is all pretty funny!

Guys,..it's all very simple to explain:

The Avett Bros are on SONY MUSIC ENTERTAINMENT

and, guess what?

John Mayer is on SONY MUSIC ENTERTAINMENT

Not sure that the boys had too much of a say in the decision as the label decided for them...

Good point Judas...

I really don't know about this one... Don't get me wrong, it is exposure to new people... I mean, this is literally 15min from me and it is TAB... but holy crap, I am pretty sure the John Mayer Crowd will piss me off alot... plus it will be a good $100 to $150 for 2 lawn tickest I'm sure... hmmmm this is a tough one....

--
I am a breathing time machine, I'll take you all for a ride!!!

NOT a fan of John Mayer, AT ALL...... But, I LOVE TAB way more than Not being a fan of JM. I just wouldn't buy a ticket to see him, wouldn't even take a free one. His music all sounds the same and he leaves a lot to be desired in the kindness category.

@Bradfurd - You had me laughing at work over the Gwar reference. Smiling Classic!

..You can just see the suited up Music Exec in his plush office in downtoan NYC...

"...Hmmmmm,....I have a brilliant idea,.....let's have TAB open for JM and give him some credibility as everybody actually hates him!!!!"

I certainly take into consideration the character and reputation of an artist with the degree that I embrace them, but to allow that to exclusively influence my opinion about their art is silly, really. Heck, Mozart was apparently a world class douche, but that doesn't keep me from appreciating the genius of his gift.

I've seen John Mayer live twice. Amazing shows both times. His guitar work and music transcends any annoyances that you might have with the people around you, his personality, or even the stupid faces he makes (most guitarists naturally make weird faces with they concentrate).

I would have went to this if The Avetts were with John in Greensboro this past month.

nope, didn't see any of that- but i don't really watch much tv or read many articles about folk i'm not directly interested in.

i'd go if it was a near show and i had that kinda extra cash. But it's not and i don't. i was just saying.

John Mayer = Stevie Ray Vaughan "Lite"

zero calories,...zero soul....

like i said i would go if it was close. but i'm with you, it's not so i'm not going.

Yep, I'm gonna let my wallet decide this one....

On a side note, I bet the meet and greet will probably be a pretty light line...

Dudes: doesn't John Mayer = massive amounts of hot girls! plus Mayer was on the Dave Chappelle show, which was funny as s***. his music is decent, i'll go for the avetts, probaby stay for mayer...and at the end, probably will leave with a smile!

AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THIS IS THE BEST NEWS I'VE HAD ALL WEEK AND THAT INCLUDES HEARING THAT ONE OF MY BEST BROS CANCER WAS A FALSE ALARM!!!!! I WILL BE GOING TO AT LEAST TWO OF THESE CONCERTS!!!!!!! AND YES THE ALL CAPS IS INTENTIONAL THIS TIME LOLOL!!!!!!!!

--
I WONDERED WHAT MY DAD WOULD SAY
HE SAID I'M PROUD OF YOU BOTH IN SO MANY
DIFFERENT WAYS

My first reaction, was of disgust, only because I am not fond of John Mayer. I have seen him in concert, only because my cousin had an extra ticket and I will go see anyone if it's free. I really wasn't impressed and I swear I went in there with an open mind. I much more enjoyed Counting Crows, who opened for him.

When The Avetts opened for DMB last year, I remember how unhappy everyone was with that. There was a lot of hating going on then, also. I am a big Dmb fan, so it didn't bother me at all. I do have to say, The Avett Brothers made many a new fan because of that tour. I am not defending them opening for Dave because I am a Dave fan, but the difference there was for the last 4 or so tours, with this year as exception, DMB has had their fans pick their opening acts. I recall putting the Avetts down as my first 3 choices every time. I think that part of the reason they were on that tour was not because they were selling out, but because they were an up and coming band and many other people voted for them.

With all that being said, I think exposure is good, even if we don't personally like the source.

I read somewhere... how important it is in life not necessarily to be strong... but to feel strong:

Wow. People sure do have sand in their vag about this announcement over on the FB.

Verizon Center in Indy:
Maximum capacity = 24000
6000 seats...18000 lawn seats

You know all those mellow-cool college kids and yuppie young adults there for Mayer are going to get their heads exploded by TAB...They play the right songs, this tour can be really big for them. Good for them. Bread and butter, Baby.

My hubby and I have an ongoing disagreement about whether TAB will ever be an arena band...I think we're on our way to finding out, Folks.

Just going to point out my thoughts. I am sorry for offending anyone including the guy who can't seem to work the caps button.
1. Bummed that they opened for Dave Matthews
2. Really bummed they are playing with Mayer
3. Really Really bummed I'm gonna drop several hundred dollars on going to see this concert. (hell yes I'm going)
I see why they are doing this. They will get all the notice they need, and for that I am so excited for them. I always wish them the best of luck. What they have done so far has really worked out for them. I just hope this is some sort of joke. Again, I am sorry for anyone who is offended. I couldn't just sit on the sidelines and not say my piece. Its like when you find out your kid took money out of your dresser drawer. You are a dissapointed, but you still love them!

--
But their good times come with prices
And I can't believe it when I hear the jokes they make
At anyone's expese except their own
Would they laugh if they knew who paid?

Like leedle said, there's a bunch of great stuff going on this spring/summer that I'll be rockin' out at....but only 1 Avett show, and that's 6 hours away.
Sadly, it's starting to seem like the southeast is going to get the short end.

John Mayer? My sister will be stoked. He took her camera from her outta the front row, and used it to play slide with in Charlotte. Greatest night of her life, she says. It was actually my mom's camera, and he scratched it all up. Mom wasn't too thrilled.

Anyway, I'm not familiar with him, so I could care less.
Whatever.

Somebody mentioned Mayer on Chappelle Show. This is hilarious if you get past the poor video quality:

"I'm a little nervous 'bout what you'll think when you see me in my swimming trunks."

Not so much a fan of Mayer... but I won't join the bandwagon with the disgusted folks on FB. I just read those comments... and whoa. I was surprised.

Still holding out for an early April Fools joke... a girl can dream, right?

I get your point, but making that an April Fool's joke would be completely class-less. Making a publicly visible direct jab on a fellow musician = Ain't their style. Talk about a negative media move.

Nate, I'm still hopeful! There's a couple chunks of open space this summer. Maybe we'll get lucky w/ the two weeks in-between Bonnaroo and them heading back to the UK- they'd be in the area already!

I'm not a fan of John Mayer (probably an understatement) or his music, but congrats to the boys for scoring some gigs that will get them massive exposure. The band and the people they surround themselves with have proven time and again that they have their heads screwed on straight and their feet firmly planted on the ground (except for Scott's foray into levitation). Have you ever read an article, heard an interview, or talked with someone who has met them that doesn't indicate what truly kind, down-to-earth guys they are? Sure, go ahead and be bummed about their association with John Mayer, I am, but I don't think we should take this as evidence of a sell-out or forgetting who they are, where they came from, and why they're doing this. I'm pretty sure they are much more aware of those things than any of us.

Just as a note, this isn't directed at anything specific that anyone posted here. Just my general reaction to the news and the response on FB and whatnot.

"The mountains are calling and I must go"-John Muir

i have taken a couple of deep breaths and i will say this, i think all the people on FB are going a little too far. I'm driving 7 hours to savanah, 3 hours to louisville, and making the trip to see the boys at newport. so why would i not use the show in IN as an excuse to see TAB one more time. My mom and sister are both big JM fans and my mom really loves I&L&U, I think if i play my cards rights i could swing a free ticket out of this and spend and evening with the family.

--
"But I can't go back, and I don't want to,
'cause all my mistakes, they brought me to you"

For selfish reasons, I'm no longer a fan of massive exposure katminelli mentioned^
Doing a new theme song for the Rush Limbaugh would be massive exposure, but I wouldn't want to have anything to do with it...
I mean, a buck's a buck, but I guess the types of folks that have been at some of the shows last year, I could do without.
What I'm saying is, TAB's focal demographic seems to be shifting further and further from me.
Just being honest. Still dig the tunes, but....

--
"Everybody knows that I'm a scum-bag" - GG Allin

Take a deep breath, folks, this is not the end of the world. Judas is probably right about the Sony Music connection -- that's why TAB appeared on Letterman and Late Late Show on CBS when the record came out. The Avetts are who they are -- look at those videos from the recent shows in Europe if you have any doubts on that score. They'll be fine, and you know they'll give 110% every night.

It's reasonable to be concerned if the Mayer audience will be respectful of the opening act, but the downstairs crowd for TAB in Ithaca didn't exactly give The Low Anthem their full attention, either. The band has a tremendous body of work, but they seem committed to progress and change, not to standing still and growing stale. If these shows turn out to be a mistake for them, they will bounce back quickly, I'm sure.

Do they have a choice who they tour with? Or, is it mandatory?
