Amazing! Amazing! Amazing! Amazing! Amazing! Amazing! Amazing! Amazing! Amazing! Amazing! Amazing! Amazing!
I had a feeling that this show would be extraordinary. And it was in every way imaginable. I'm at a loss for words... AMAZING!

Mayes pretty much said it. It was amazing. It was the first time I got to see these guys and I have been on a 7 month listening binge since I first heard of them last year. I do not think I have listened to anyone else at all in the last 7 months. This capped it off. Laundry Room as the opener was excellent and may be my new favorite song, it only got better from there, so much energy, the crowd was awesome, singing every word. They brought the house down with Go To Sleep to end the set and then again with Colorshow to end the night. They were truly one of the best acts I have ever seen and I have been to hundreds of shows. This was in my top three. Sorry for rambling but they were that good. Thanks and I will definitely be at every show I can for the rest of my lifetime!

Ditto! It was a great show and it was really nice to hear some oldies like I Killed Sally's Lover and Hard Worker. The boys looked and sounded fabulous and the crowd was terrific (although a little loud up behind the balcony - gosh, how can you talk when Scott is singing All My Mistakes?) And Paleface was a great opening act, though again the crowd in the bar was RUDE!

Can't wait for NYC!

I completely agree, I was a lil tired after standing outside so I opted to sit up in the balcony and those tool boxes would not shut the hell up. There is no reason to yell during Murdered in the city.... Damn.

I thought the show was great from the get go. Laundry Room as an opener really set the pace for the whole night. Word has it Joe broke a string during I killed Sallys Lover. During the La La part in Go to Sleep, scott picked up a microphone and moved it about the crowd. Brian and I were screaming into that mic. Oh and a woman claiming to be bob's mom really wanted to hear Greensboro Woman. She also felt the need to sing over Seth during Ballad of Love and Hate until she was kindly reminded it was Seth's song and not hers by Leo and Marry Ellen. The staff was worse than the crowd though I think. Just plain rude. What a weird place for a venue too. Smack dab in the center of china town.

I got to talk with Seth and Joe before the show so that was cool.

It was good meeting new faces and seeing old ones as well.

Incredible show last nite... the amount of energy this group of performers puts out is enough to light the city. On the flipside, when they tone it down the audience becomes audioslaves - ready to receive each soft note and heart written lyric.

Thumbs up going out to Paleface as well. This is the first time I saw their performance... and I hope it won't be my last !

Just wish I wasn't distracted from the show as often by the brunette in the balcony with the red summer dress... wow !

I always have this moment at shows, right before the music starts, where I consider the wisdom of removing my shoes. I really like to dance with them off. On one hand, floors, by nature of being floors, are gross and dirty. There’s the possibility of getting stepped on. One the other hand, that’s what showers are for, and I have nine other toes if I loose one. And I really need to dance. The shoes invariably come off.
So Paleface and Mo have just put on a great set, my shoes are (kinda) stuffed under the stage, and I’m about to burst into pieces. It’s been too long since my last show. They open with Laundry Room. Even right now, as I’m thinking about it, I’m getting goosebumps on my arm. Laundry Room is amazing, and then Paranoia, and then Sally’s Lover?!?!!? I am filled up with music and sweaty and gross and AHHHHHHH ex-plo-ding BOOM! I loved that they kept pulling the older songs out. I really must apologize to SurlyQuirky and littledeadhead if I danced on you. But I don’t apologize to the “bob’s mom” lady.
Right after Glistening Shine, they launch into Hard Worker. I wanted to enjoy Hard Worker because they rarely play it, but I was still stuck in Glistening Shine. I want to hear that song over and over. It was amazing, I was almost in tears. Thank you for that moment, guys.

One of the best parts of the show was meeting cool new people, even though it involved marinating in fish smell. Hope to see everyone again soon at more shows.

Just a few words to sum up my thoughts. Please excuse the over-used adjectives, but you can understand the well of emotions, but the inadequate language to express those thoughts.

I hadn't been to a show since November and during the 3 hour plus drive to Philly I had several fluttering heart episodes of anticipation.

Laundry Room (!!!!!) was an intense opener and started off the show on a high note and it just built from there. The softer emotional songs were so think with feeling. During the last few songs I started to feel faint and had to work my way toward the back of the room to sit. Even then, I just sat in the floor, closed my eyes, and absorbed the sweetness. There is just nothing else like a live Avett show. Now my thoughts are turned toward June 11th when I can experience this glorious feeling again. I feel rich.

Sauls, thanks for checking to make sure I had arrived safely.
Jennifer, Ann, Judy, and greybird, it was wonderful to meet you.

Travis, thanks for being so kind at the merch table. I love nice people!

Been playing Mignonette all day. Good Lord, these songs are amazing.

I agree it was a great show, as always! I just moved to Philly from NC, so it was nice to see the boys bring a piece of home up here and really nice to see that so many people new the words! Not my favorite venue, not that intimate for a small place and the staff were rude and you could only see from a few select spots. Loved the show though, they brought their energy and nice to see they are still remaining true! Loved all the old songs, haven't heard weight of lies live in ages! Tons of fun! Can't wait to catch them again soon! Wish I could just follow them around! Hope I get to meet them one day!!

I'm still reeling from this show. When I think about it, I start to tear up a little because it was THAT special to me. 18 is my favorite number and it happened to be my 18th show and the boys didn't disappoint. I was surrounded (mostly) by people that I've grown to love and some new faces that I already love after last night. I met so many new people yesterday--Annie, Leo, Julia, Sophie, Gunther, Becky, Mark, Michelle, Ann, Lauren, Sarah, Amelia, Nathan and probably others that I'm failing to mention (sorry--still in that post-show haze). It was so good to see Jennifer, Taryn, Andre, Dawn and Brian again. Highlights for me: bumping into the boys and the crew early on, chatting with the above mentioned people in line, dancing (and sweating) my heart out to the boys (and PF & Mo), getting stage burn, having a complete breakdown during Perfect Space, getting a stellar setlist and talking with Joe & Bob after the show (Bob poured his heart out--he was so thankful and sweet, plus he gave us cookies!). Downsides: The fish smell, the venue staff (so rude!), the rude people (I'm talkin' to you Bob's mom and the gal & her male companion that yelled and sang over the boys) and not getting to meet the rest of you boarders. All in all, it was pretty much a perfect night. Needless to say, I can't wait for those Ohio and Kentucky shows!

such an amazing show. i would have made the drive from kentucky to philly ten times over for that show! so great hearing I and Love and You, Perfect Space, Matrimony and so many more for the first time! Also loved meeting and talking to more people. It was my friends and I's first show with our Team Avett shirts and it was great turning onto Arch St. and seeing all that red and white and talking to so many new people! littledeadhead, cant wait to see you in Columbus!

already said some of this in the setlist thread, but just wanted to add:
a few negatives:
not-Bob's-mom scared me, esp. when she gave us a hard time in the beginning b/c Taryn left to use the bathroom/hit the merch table. seriously thought someone was going to get shanked. BUT, wasn't she the one that shut up the obnoxious singing girl? that's what I thought happened, but not sure. And agree that the Troc staff were rude, and the smell of dead fish was extremely unpleasant. And yeah, STILL don't get the talkers at ALL, let alone during the slow songs. The vast majority of the crowd was awesome--the audience was loving them, but there were some very notable exceptions that were getting on my nerves.
BUT mostly positives:
Great show by the guys AS ALWAYS, esp. considering that they are just coming off a long tour and I know they must be exhausted, some great surprises (the lalalala's, for example)
So great to meet so many new people, many of whose names are very familiar on the board, and of course, to hang out with my old friends---had a great time with you guys. Mary Ellen, I'm not as good at remembering names as you are, so, uh, ditto on her list. Smiling

Opposing view:

After someone dumped a box of steamed crab scraps in my dumpster at work, the smell of the Philly streets reminded me of home, the tangy fish a bit more tolerable than decomposing crab.

Security in the balcony was very cool, I thought. They politely got some people off the steps where they would have blocked others' views and/or way of getting in and out. The guy that gave me a quick pat down outside (left the ol' Bowie knife at home) was smiling and polite and pointed me to the next door for the ticket taker.

Would have enjoyed meeting a few people, but I was with an old friend who I hadn't seen in years, and before an Avett show I seem to go into a sort of hazy zone of anticipation where I'm not much of a conversationalist.

It was not a venue that I'd rush back to, but it was quite a bit better than I'd hoped for, and - as I've said before - better than my least favorite, Recher Theatre, where there is no option to sit, and I encountered very obnoxious drunks. I hope the Bros. are beyond playing that dank cave.

Photos are up.

If any team avett member does not want their picture on the interweb just let me know and Ill remove it.

Those might be the best pictures of a TAB show I've ever seen. Thanks for posting them! Made me relive the whole night ...

Great pictures Andre!

G Bogs - thanks for sharing you first show thoughts. Glad to see you've got the addiction now too!

Infamous Andre... unfortunatly I didn't get to meet you..I heard a lot about you from Jesssdad and the others... Those pictures are amazing. Where you up there with Bonefish?

we did meet actually. I came back and spoke with you while we were in line. I was asking you about if anyone met up with you at the fieldhouse. you also told me you were in the navy and because of that you will have a place to stay if you do go to the NYC shows. it was getting close to show time so i'm sure the anticipation was overriding the memory of our brief meet. but yeah I was up front the whole time pretty much.

I dragged two friends to the show at the Troc in Philly--I'm from VA. And though they both enjoyed it, I don't think they fully grasped my level of enthusiasm. It was an amazing show. I had seen them at the Birchmere last year (I dragged different friends to that show), but the show at the Troc was absolutely amazing. One day, one of my friends will become as obsessed with them as I am. Glad to see there are so many other people out there that enjoy good music.

Is that the ship backdrop I spy behind the boys, or . . . ?

it sure is. they dropped it when they started playing kick drum heart.

I have mentioned before that I am extremely unobservant. There was a moment where I noticed a change, maybe I'd looked away, or heard something and all of a sudden I noticed the new (teardrop) background and wondered if they'd just dropped it, but then I thought, no, they couldn't have changed it b/c this is already the new background--I didn't remember seeing anohter one. But yep, you're totally right. Started with the ship and ended with the new one.
I think.
Man, how'd I miss that??

Hey Andre (or whoever I stand next to)--next time will you elbow me when there is something I should notice? Smiling

ETA: oh wait, it was the other way around? started with the new then changed to the ship? or was there no background before? what is wrong with me??? I'm kind of bummed now, b/c I love the ship.

it definitely started with the ship. the pictures are in chronological order. but I distinctly remember brian pointing it out in the beginning.

Enjoicashwell, Oh now I remember.. You got the lil soul patch action going on.
So you're gonna be at both the NYC shows? I got a ticket for the friday, I really wanted
to see nicole atkins.

Yes sirrr.

"it definitely started with the ship. the pictures are in chronological order. but I distinctly remember brian pointing it out in the beginning."
Did it stay with the ship or did it change to the teardrops? I think I remember teardrops.

yeah, please, elbow me.

"it sure is. they dropped it when they started playing kick drum heart"
How did I not notice the drop? Oh, yeah, because I was flipping out on the dance floor. I got to work the next day and people were all "where were you yesterday?" I'm sure they regreted asking because they got a play-by-play recount of the show, and none of them have ever heard of the Avetts. I already told some people this, but I work at an old Civil War fort, dressing up and the whole bit. I usually work in one of the old officer's kitchens. (There are only three roles for women to portray at the fort: the kitchen, the laundry, and the rich lady/officer's wife.) Well, yesterday, this other girl wanted to work in the kitchen...she was like, "Annie, do you mind working in the laundry room today?" Laundry Room? yes, please!

Andre, great pics! Thanks for putting them up so fast.

What an amazing show! It was mine and my husband's (Addicted) first show since Nov. and certainly well worth the wait! So excited when they played Laundry Room first, it has quickly become one of my favorites! Went crazy when they played Colorshow, this has to be our daughter's favorite song and we were talking about that with our friends earlier in the day, so how completely cool that they played it! If they would only play it at the Folk Fest in Newport (this will be both our kids 1st Avett show!)... Anyhow, I don't have any other new info to add besides this show was amazing and I've enjoyed reading everyone's posts and its almost like reliving the show, but it certainly helps to continue the post-show high! Can't wait for Rochester!

Truly enjoyed meeting new people(chilixx, jesssdad, deanrogers, enjoicashwell, dawnrae, bonefish, taryn, and others I'm sure, sorry if I forgot your name, I'm horrible with names!) and putting faces to names on the boards. It made being squished like sardines absolutely enjoyable!!! And while I wasn't right next to the crazy lady, still felt the effect 3 people away and felt so sad for those of you who were right around her!

Andre- awesome pics! I was right behind you and saw you taking them and being really anxious to see them! Nicely done!

totally forgot to add that we met Bob briefly before the show, what a nice, down to earth guy! Most of you have written on what great people the band is and its great to see it first hand! I love it when fabulous things happen to people who work hard to get what they want and don't lose sight of themselves while doing it!

so true!
"I love it when fabulous things happen to people who work hard to get what they want and don't lose sight of themselves while doing it!"

They deserve every great thing that comes their way!

I can only echo Tami's statements. it was great to meet everyone. I have never met so many great people all at once, and so quickly! What a great community to be a part of...and you get to experience some of the greatest music ever!

and meeting Bob was cool, he was very inviting and seemed genuinely interested in talking to us. He asked where we were from (Rochester) and we told him we were going to the Newport show and we talked about that for a few seconds, thanked him, and went on our way. So cool!

We came down from Michigan to see the show. It was a great time. We were exstatic when we saw Pale Face and Mo opening up. They are wonderful. I thought the set list was great. They played a lot of songs we were hoping to hear this time around. The new stuff was wonderful. The venue wasn't as intimate as ones we've previously experienced but we thought the staff there was very friendly, just doing their jobs. This was the first time I've been to a show where there was any talking during and even between songs. At the shows we saw in Michigan the crowd was silent waiting to hear every line and every note. It was a very different experience but an enjoyable one. We can't wait to go to the next show! (If anyone is going to the Columbus, OH show we'll see you there!)

Yeah Sonleigh Philly/Jersey is ful of inconsiderate jerks

This show was absolutely amazing! It was everything I expected it to be and more. I was standing in the second row and I got to shake Scott's hand. My brother was standing right next to me and Scott gave him his bandanna. These guys are seriously the best band ever! I am looking forward to possibly going to the Rochester and Syracuse shows, as well as possibly Buffalo and Pittsburgh! Ever since I heard about The Avett Brothers about a year or 18 months ago I haven't listened to anything else. They are easily the best band I have ever heard and I can't wait for their new album to come out in August!

Great time, good people, everyone outside brought their senses of humor, we had a good time in the couple hours waiting to go in. Worth the wait, I was 6 feet from the stage, what an energy filled show PF & Mo and Dave Mayfield jumping in here and there. (that was Dave on the drums , rocking the chin fro, right?) I had a great time and being so close to the stage just makes it all so much better.

DC countdown is on, short break, followed by Pittsburgh,Norfolk and Dewey...gonna be an Avett filled summer.

Chilixx - don't feel bad - I couldn't tell you when the banner changed either! I just noticed at some point. Guess our eyes were fixed on other things, huh? =)

Question for you...(and Taryn) - who was that "smile" sign language from Seth intended for? It appeared to be one of you guys...can't imagine it was you with that big grin you already had.

Dawn--yes, I'm sure that's it!
And about Seth--I don't know! I've been wondering the same thing and was hoping someone else would have an idea. I thought he was looking right at me when he did it and I guarantee a smile didn't leave my face the entire time (plus it was during something fast--Sally's Lover, maybe?, so it's not like I was feeling introspective during a slow song.) So either 1. it wasn't meant for me or 2. it meant something else--I would've taken it to mean he was telling someone to smile, though I can't really imagine Seth asking someone to do that from the stage. Maybe a recognition of my or someone else's big smiles? Could also have something to do with talking to him before the show, though I have no idea if he even recognized me from the stage. GRR! I have been very curious.

Did anyone else see Cheater Slicks on stage taking pictures, or did I imagine that? It was dark and my aging eyes could have been mistaken. Anyway, I wanna see the photos, if so!!

"We came down from Michigan to see the show."

Hope your anniversary was great (what a cool gift)!! The show in Grand Rapids will be much different from Lansing & Philly - see you both there!

Yeah chili and stirredbythemusic the ship dropped to reveal the paint/tear drops right at the first beat of Kick Drum Heart. I actually got a picture on my phone mid fall, I'd post it but it's really blurry

Yes, it was Cheater Slicks on stage. It was funny b/c right before show started Brian said "Wonder where Crackerfarm has been?" And just a few minutes later we noticed Cheater.

Also speaking of noticing people on the side backstage - Jessica Lea Mayfield was also hanging out. I was kinda surprised only her brother came out to participate - I thought they were going to do something with her too.

oh, Cheater, oops.
yeah, I thought JLM would sing with them. oh well.

I saw it drop too, probably cause i don't think I blinked during the whole show.
