Westobou 9/18

Westobou 9/18

I know it's a little over a month away...but anyone planning on going to this festival? I'm driving 4.5 hours and bringing a friend, my sister and her boyfriend (all have seen the Avett Brothers once before).

Replies for this Board Topic

We're going! Not sure if its myself and my husband yet or if my daughter will be attending with me.

Yay! Have you been to the venue before? I found some pictures online and it looks like a really great spot! I am so excited...just planned this so looking forward to seeing the Avetts sooner than I thought I would.

I'm thinking about going. I'd be traveling by myself.

I wasn't going to until I looked into the whole thing. The Westobou Festival is 10 days, and has several interesting art exhibits going on in conjunction with nightly concerts. Some of the art shows are free, and some are not (but they're relatively cheap: $5-ish). There are a few I'd like to go to if I can fit it in. Also, the Jessye Norman Auditorium, where they are playing, is right on the Savannah River. It looks like a really pretty, lovely location. Honestly, I wish I could make it more than a day trip.
On 9/20 (Sunday) there's a concert in Tuscaloosa that I'd like to go to. It's closer to me (and possibly you too?) than Augusta but I don't have to mess with work/school sched to make the Friday show in GA. Also the people i'm going with can't make the Sunday show. If I can get 9/21 off from work then I'm gonna have to convince a friend to take me/come along with me to AL and jet south after work...I'd love to hit up two shows in three days!
The more I think/talk about it the more excited I get..

Does anyone by any chance know about any camping places near here?

A friend and I are heading down from ATL for this. Does anyone know anything more about the venue? Can you bring in beer/liquor, or is it available there?

Also, any recommendations on hotels in the area?

it says on the website "no coolers allowed" so I doubt they'd let you bring in alcohol, but I have no idea if there will be any available or not.

Hello ALL!! Westobou shall be an amazing show. When the Avetts are in Augusta they always tear the house down. I moved about three months ago to Orlando from Augusta and am traveling 7 HOURS!!! to this. It will be memorable to say the least. No camping, well not within 20miles, lots of hotels, and lots of beer for sale. Lots of bars with cheap alcohol though. EVERYONE PUMPED!! This is gonna be my 7th Avett show, can't wait.

brak:
Hell yea! I am driving almost 5 hours from TN for this show. That stinks there's nowhere close to camp. but cheap alcohol and lots of hotels sounds good. I am most definitely Pumped. CANNOT WAIT!

And this is gonna be my 8th show (? I think) and I got two more coming up after this one. You going to Tuscaloosa as well? Or at least catching them in Tallahassee on your way back home?

Your post got me SO excited now!!!!

Yeah, I'm going to try and hit Tallahassee but it all depends on fundage. This show is going to be SICK. If you want to treat yourself while your in Augusta, stop by Pizza Joint, downtown is just one street (Broad St) Cheap beer and pizza, and it's the best pizza you'll ever have.

Once I saw a picture of the venue, I bought tickets immediately. Right on the river? heck yea! thanks for the pizza suggestion.

So the show is general admission, but there are seats in the venue right? Is it just first come first serve?

There's seats, but there's also limited standing room. I'm not sure if standing is going to be allowed. It usually isn't but you can never be sure.

hmmm...I was wondering the same thing masuther. When i purchased my tickets from the festival website it didn't give me a seat but on another site (ticketmaster or something maybe) it didn't have seats but a range..like M-Z or something weird like that. But when my tickets came in the mail it just said general admission.

brak: What do you say "limited standing room" do you mean a pit area? I can't believe standing isn't usually allowed. How can I remain seated for an avetts show?

I was wondering about when to get there because there's 3 bands playing that night, starting at 6:30. But my ticket has 8:00 for the time, so I guess each concert requires a ticket--as in I can't go to the 6:30 show to stake out my spot. Dang

Naw, that's weird your ticket says 8:00, the show starts at 6:30. I'd get there then and camp out for your spot. There is a small pit, and I'm hoping that it will be utilized. If not I might lose my mind. The other two bands are good too, I wouldn't miss em.

I didn't know if there were different tickets for each concert. I'll be there as early as I can be...which will probably be obnoxiously earlier than my concert companions want to get there!

Edit: I'm an idiot because my ticket DOES say 6pm. I apparently need reading glasses at the age of 25.

So what time is everyone planning on showing up? I was thinking around 5:00 since it seems the doors open at 6:00.

When I get there depends on how early we leave TN. My friend is driving and we've yet to finalize the ETD. But we've got to get out early to avoid traffic etc since we're traveling like 4 hours.

Does anyone know how the parking is near the venue? I saw on google maps that there is a parking garage down the street, but it's connected to a Marriott hotel, and I'm not sure it's for guests only.

I'll see y'all in Georgia! I love when things magically fall into place to allow for extra Avett adventures!

I'll be there too! I think I remember the very nice woman I talked to saying that there is adjacent parking, but I wouldn't count on my memory too much. I'm staying at the Ramada down the street so I'll be walking as long as the weather's good! Holler if ya see me! Smiling

Also, littledeadhead- I think we spent five hours in extremely close quarters at the video shoot (?) so I consider us to be friends already!

Sarah--just look for Team Avett #36 in Augusta and come introduce yourself!

masuther-sometimes hotels have parking garages with public access.

littledeadhead-I definitely will! Can't wait to see all you guys there... This will be my sixth show this year and it still doesn't feel like enough Laughing out loud

littledeadhead: yay last minute Avett Bros concerts! How far of a drive is it for you?

Edit: I've finalized plans to leave at noon on Friday. I don't really know how long it's gonna take us to get there. Mapquest quotes me a time of 4 hours 20 minutes but they lie some of the time. I hope it takes us less time than that! I'm gonna be sad if we get there and there's a huge line, and now I'm paranoid that we need to leave earlier.

There's TONS of free parking all over downtown. I'm gonna be there most of the day, there's lots of stuff going on the whole week, anyone gonna be in town the saturday after? Young Goodman Brown is playing saturday night and if you haven't heard of em he's sick.

korsasil--it's a 7 hour drive for me. It'll definitely be worth the drive!

what time are you planning on getting to the venue?

5ish. We're riding down together from Bristol, with a slight detour along the way.

"I was wondering about when to get there because there's 3 bands playing that night, starting at 6:30. "

I've been wondering this too. If we get there at 5:00 to get a good place in line, and the band doesn't start until 9:00, it's going to be a long night, even if the opening bands are good.

We're coming down from SC, and I think it's only about a 2 hour drive. I'm coming with my husband and daughter.

For any of you guys coming to Augusta for the show Friday I think that getting there by 5 should give you plenty of time to get a spot at the venue. As far as parking goes there is plenty of free parking normally but this weekend might be a little tougher considering Westobou as well as Arts in the Heart of Augusta. There is a bank on the corner of 8th and Reynolds (2 blocks from venue) with a lot beside it that is open and the lots behind it. Also parking on Broad St and walking a couple of blocks would be easy to do. There will be plenty going on in town this weekend so come and stay a while. Great bars and food all within walking distance to the river.

Wasn't planning on attending due to $$ issues, but a great friend has seen fit to get a ticket for me. But just to echo earlier comments there should be plenty of parking and great food and bars downtown. Me and the wife went to the Corey Smith show @ the amphitheater last month and the I have to say it was great venue. A little worried about the weather though. 50% chance of rain on Friday, but I doubt that will keep the die hard fans away. Don't know if it will apply at this concert but there was plenty of room right in front of the stage and they did not seem too concerned with folks being there during the Corey Smith show. And it looks like I will be flying solo, so any Avett Nation peeps that wouldn't mind me hanging about just let me know

Later

jmac--I'll be there with masuther (Megan), so look for us. I'll be wearing Team Avett jersey #36.

I'll most likely be in a team avett jersey as well. I really hope it doesn't rain, but if it does that will not keep me away by any means! I also really hope they let us stand by the stage. It's getting so close!

korsasil: If it rains, we'll just embrace it. When it rained the last time the boys played outdoors, the crowd got "Me & God". I would suffer through the rain for that!

I'm officially useless. I don't know how I'm going to make it through work tomorrow or sleep tomorrow night. I am THAT excited. I haven't seen the boys since the Charlotte show and I'm going through withdrawals. I obviously have an addiction.

littledeadhead: I haven't seen them since april and I am ready for my fix!

I am definitely useless right now as well. How the hell can I even think about algebra, art history or rhetoric at a time like this? There is no way I will be able to sleep tomorrow night either!

and yeah the chance of rain just makes me think of all the posts I read about the kansas city show, which sounded pretty BA, so...no worries!

I'm excited to meet some of ya'll too--yay new friends that are just as obsessed with The Avett Brothers as I am. That is better than freaking Christmas.

"yay new friends that are just as obsessed with The Avett Brothers as I am. That is better than freaking Christmas."

Ha! Couldn't agree more! And is it just me or has this been the longest week ever?!

I'm starting to freak out about this seating situation. Feel free to talk me down with details.

So here's what I think about the seating situation. Only the diehard fans will show up at or before five since I don't think they're allowing anyone in before six. So if you show up by five you should be either front or second row depending on how many people show up that early.

Also, since there are two openers the place shouldn't start getting close to full until around the time the second opener goes on.

Thanks masuther! That actually did make me feel much better! Laughing out loud

See you guys in line!

Does anyone know how big this place is...how many seats?

It holds 1,600 people.

The seating is pretty much bleacher type seats, rather uncomfortable really, but if like a pp said if you get there when the gates open you should be guarenteed a first or second row seat. And if the set up is the same as the Corey Smith show I went to last month, as the second opening band was winding down their set, people began to fill up the area directly in front of the stage. Let's just all hope that the weather cooperates. But still looking forward to a great night!

I'm starting to feel like the weather isn't going to hold, but I'm not sure this would be a horrible thing. Does any one know if the stage is covered, and would they keep playing if it was raining?

I was thinking it could be fun to go crazy in the rain...

Any of y'all going out afterwards? I'm coming in from Atlanta tomorrow afternoon, so I don't really know the area but it would be fun to have a few drinks afterwards.

Carolina one day I'll, someday I'll come home.

The stage is very well covered, but the entire seating area is not. I think that at this point we can pretty much count on getting wet at some point, but there is a 40% chance we wont! Smiling

Sarah: I've been so slammed with school/work (mon-thurs I've had 12-15+ hour days. blah) that this week is actually going by pretty fast. Sleep deprivation screws with your sense of time though.

I just realized that this time tomorrow I'll be loading up for the drive. I can't believe it's here already...

masuther: your comment on the seating situation made me feel much better too! As long as we don't hit any crazy traffic in Atlanta (which will probably happen anyways) we'll be getting there around 4 or 5. I will be elated if I can get front row for this.

jmac: thanks for your insight on the seating stuff too. Hopefully this show is similar to Corey Smith's and we can fill up the pit! I hope the 2nd band won't feel bad like they aren't loved when the front rows are filled with Team Avett shirts/fans. And Corey Smith rocks!

nick.scott: it would be pretty fun to go crazy in the rain!! In my opinion, the only downside is that I won't be able to take my camera with me because it will get destroyed. And my friends and I are spending the night down there so we'll probably be down for going out for drinks. Our original plan was to camp out and drink around a bonfire, but there's not anywhere super close, and um..it's probably going to be raining. Also, I'd think they'd keep playing unless there's lightning. But, I dunno I've only seen them outdoors once and it was hot/sunny.

According to weather.com at 9pm tomorrow there's a 60% chance of rain, buuuutttt the humidity will be at 100%...

And I've said it already but I CANNOT WAIT for tomorrow night ya'll!!! I realized I hadn't mentioned this yet: My name is Lisa and I'm gonna be with my sister, her boyfriend, and a friend of mine.

I'm gonna be rocking my Team Avett shirt for the first time also!

I'll be making the 2 hour(ish) drive down from Greenville, SC. I've never seen a show at this venue, but I did see TAB once before in Augusta. This would be my sixth show, except a festival I was at got cancelled due to weather. I hope to run into ya'll there.

Well, looks like we are officially sold out folks, and the concert is a go, rain or shine! Pumped!

"It's been raining all day"

Well off and on all day here in Augusta, but I am ready to for a fun, albeit possibly soggy night. I have made the usual sacrifices and been praying to the gods of live music, so maybe we will have a break in the weather long enough to get through the show somewhat dry. But bringing a poncho nonetheless. See y'all there.

WHAT A SHOW! Amazing night on the river in Augusta.
