clearly, you have no idea how the music industry works. bands don't make money on album sales, they make it on merchandise. while big bands complain that downloading hurts sales, they benefit by word of mouth - and what better way to spread the word than by making mix tapes or emailing songs to friends... it grows. radiohead gives their songs away for free, NIN does it too - bands sign contracts these days that guarantees money up front and not contingent on sales. if sales are low, they get dropped, but the tours, money and (established) fan base remain (korn was dropped as was third eye blind and they are still relatively successful)

bands should be in favor of mediafire and rapidshare, it's a free promotional tool so that they can expand their fanbase, instead of alienating them, like metallica. also, bands make a conscious decision to be in a band and tour. no one forces their hand. if they struggle with album sales i don't feel sorry for them, that's their career choice, and don't give me "it's their lively-hood" or "that's how they earn a living" - true musicians know it shouldn't be about money, but the art they create.

@aaronm

"true musicians know it shouldn't be about money, but the art they create."

Thats bulls***. I'm a web developer and I love to do it. I'm good at it and I'm it allows me to create what I want...but I expected people to give me my dues when they benefit from my creations.

Welcome to the boards.

aaronm, clearly you don't understand it is not anyone's right to give it away, except the ones who created it.

one hand, while TAB is big and surely getting bigger, i don't know that they're so big yet that every sale doesn't still help. Got kids to put through college now, you know?

on the other, if i had to guess i don't think it'll be too bad- i think the kinda fan TAB attracts is probably pretty likely to want to support them, even if the fanaticism on here isn't par for the course for the average fan.

For crying out loud, the guys poured their hearts and souls into the album so why not spend a few bucks to show them some love?

For me I only want to experience the new album on the day it arrives in my mailbox. Actually, I'm hoping that the box is so big that it won't fit in the box. Oh Happy Day!!!

someone sent the cd to me, without me asking. i wont open it. im not going to. i want to wait for my stuff to come in the mail and im going to listen to it on the 29th.

One more thing I'd like to add, that kinda goes along with that IWFTG said. I know nothing about the music business, but I'd bet that independent artist, *DO* make money from CD sales. They have much less overhead and probably get a bigger percentage of what is sold. Grant it, they have now signed to a major label, but the cost of making the album needs to be recouped. But what do I know. I'm just like most folks, running my mouth about things I don't really know anything about.

Braxton: " Would you like to purchase the super delux 8-Track tape edition featuring a twelve min recording of scott humming to himself in the car?....Yes please."

wes, have you ever been in a band? or run a label or distro? didn't think so. you are design for hire, and that's not the same as creating art for enjoyment so i'd expect you to make money. do you celebrate and admire your own art? your work is all 1's and 0's - is that even art? sorry to break it to you. welcome to the boards? what is that, a "burn"? maybe this will reignite the fire in you so that you create something extraordinary for yourself or someone else (btw, you are welcome).

maybe this is a bad analogy, but take the Chicago Blackhawks - for the longest time, they were not televised locally unless the games were sold out (they never were). the owner, bill wirtz dies and his son takes over. immediately, 10 games were on television. the very next season (2008-2009), most games were televised locally and the hawks had the highest attendance in the league. all of the radio shows claimed the same thing: if you wanted to bring people in, you have to give it away for free.

isn't that what art is? to let other people enjoy it for free? if you want to put kids through college, then get a job. being in a touring band is an honor and privilege, stop being so ignorant and claiming to be holier than thou... i don't believe that no one here has made a mix tape or burned a cd for a friend or co-worker? it's the same thing.

i'm just stating the obvious. i buy records - all the time, i don't think people should throw a fit when albums are downloaded. clearly, we are all going to buy and support our favorite bands - i travel all over to see "my bands" i buy merch and whatnot, but i support the decision to download an album if someone so chooses.

borrowing a thought from the movie Rushmore: "When one man, for whatever reason, has the opportunity to lead an extraordinary life, he has no right to keep it to himself."

say we were friends and i said that these are the bands i am listening to right now:

avail
texas is the reason
red sparowes
hammock
angel eyes
danzig (albums I - IV)
old crow medicine show
minus the bear

and you've never heard of them - you go to at least one myspace page and like it based on the snippet you hear... are you going to run out and buy an album? no, you'd probably ask me to rip one for you and when they tour, you might go see them and buy a t-shirt or poster or THEN buy an album... that's how it works today. 10 years ago, no.

based on all of your arguments, i'll assume no one here has ever purchased a used cd either?
i can't believe i am dedicating this much energy to this thread.
aaron

Don't all artists sell their work? Sculptors, painters, writers? C'mon. This argument gets resurrected here ever few weeks or months. Your points are not new ones and certainly not bad ones, but the fact is, it still is not your call and until they offer it for free (which they have done with the single and the live EP) I think the folks on the receiving end of the art should be thankful that the art is being made for us to enjoy and be happy to pay for that art. We live in a gimme, take world where everyone wants something without paying the costs.

stirred,

thank you. while i don't agree with it, your counter-argument is logical and i respect that! good stuff!

aaron

“ isn't that what art is? to let other people enjoy it for free?”

NO .. Picasso was paid for his art, Rembrandt was paid for his art, Beethoven was paid for his art, Andy Warhol was paid for his art Even little Richard was paid for his art (though no where near as much as he should have been paid)
It is idiotic to say art should be for free.
Still I think it's nice of you to take the time to join the bands message board and show them how stupid they are. I’m sure that once they have read your posts they will see the error of their ways.

i saw heartless bastards with GLA and didn't care for them too much. i won't be downloading any of their stuff. ; )

"It is idiotic to say art should be for free"

truly profound. do you think before you "speak"?

clearly i do know stealing is stealing. albm hasn't been officially released and someone is offering free download on a web site without the bands approval is robbing from my friends who work very hard. mr smat guy

"Hell has no fury like a woman; happy, scorned, or otherwise"

might be an "honor and a privilege," to be in a touring band, but our support of them is also in our self-interest. we want them to create and play for us. can't make art if you starve to death. And if it came down to being a band and making sure their kids have a better life, well they'd make the self-less choice. that's something we like about them. so we don't want them to "get a job." we WANT to keep them supported enough to do what they love to do, because we love it so much. Feeding them feeds us.

sorry josh, Gaslight Anthem (and i had no idea what yw stood for either).
north carolina 4 now or whatever your name is (since you don't sign your name to your posts) - I have put out 2 full lengths and and a few eps, not to mention ran a label and was part of a distro. i'm more than happy that people are downloading records i'm affiliated with. i don't give it away or post it to sites, but if it's getting around and someone is enjoying or hating it (polarizing emotions), then i am doing my part as an artist. i create art, but i'm not an artist - i do it for the purity and joy and so others can appreciate it. art is not business. - if it's sold, it becomes a commodity and loses the label of "true art" - when it's bought, it's compromised and bastardized.

aaron

ah, beautiful, IWFTG!! Amen!

(I guess this qualifies as a golly gee post)

--
Braxton: " Would you like to purchase the super delux 8-Track tape edition featuring a twelve min recording of scott humming to himself in the car?....Yes please."

ain't too much "true art" in the world then, if it's compromised as soon as it's sold...

then i guess i am the only true artist out there, huh?
high five to me!

He should have said clearly you are not a successful artist

"Jazz is not dead, it just smells funny." - Frank Zappa

my hypocrisy knows no bounds. though, isn't that where the phrase "starving artist" comes from?
i make music but i also have a real career. the people who get it all, get it; most people don't - as we are experiencing here. i guess it's the music scene i was raised in...

gleam, you are right in your statements, just misguided, i think people missed the statement i made about how bands make $$$ by playing shows and touring and off of merch - that's the cashcow... which is why labels are now signing bands to 360 contracts (which means the label has their hands on every aspect of the band - album sales, cuts off the door at shows, and merch). bands can keep making music, and i think they'd be happy to give it away for free - because it'll bring more people out to see them.

why did they open for DMB? for exposure. i am positive the AVB guarantee wasn't too large, and they probably could have headlined shows and made more money there, but they knew playing with a huge band would open the door for more fans - essentially, they were giving their music away for free that night. same principles as downloading, getting it to the masses that wouldn't otherwise necessarily have an vested interest.

sundayrehab, well played!

: )
aaron

well then put me down as one artist who would love to bastardize and compromise my work. if i could make a living off of painting i'd do it in a hard beat. i don't think that makes me any less of an artist, it doesn't change what i paint. i paint for myself, no one else s opinion or thoughts will change what or how i paint, but if some one wants to pay me, you better be damn sure i'll take their money.

as far as pirating albums, i'm not going to say i've never downloaded an album, but i do make sure i support the albums and artists that i love. i wouldn't put making a mix tape in quite the same category as downloading an album though. generally a mix tape is going to give a song or a few more, and hopefully entice the person into going out and buying more of the artists they enjoy. i send out tons of mix tapes and have been rewarded with friends all over the country finding new bands, going to shows, buying cds and merch.

of course you could also take the perspective that most of us have preordered the album, so we've already given the band our music, then why is the date that we listen to it so important?

and if you're in a downloading mood, (here comes a shameless pulg) here's my husband's band's first album http://www.megaupload.com/?d=4Q83AHVZ my husband plays lead guitar and some backing vocals. if you're in the atlanta area try and catch a show, they're playing in marietta friday.

and now i'm done rambling. night.

I am all for the mix tape/CD concept. I can see no downside there.

I love the lengths that some people will go to rationalize their actions.

If you pirate, just admit it and be done with it. There's no need to rationalize. Rationalization is just admitting that you have a deep-seated regret over your actions.

Arrrr, I feared the day this thread would come to pass.

Support the band, support the band, support the band. TELL YOUR FRIENDS!
Buy tix, merch, albums, etc. TELL YOUR FRIENDS to do the same!

If, by chance, you have an advance copy of the album...talk it up ALOT, when the time is right. Don't spoil it for others, just TELL THEM how great it is...all the while encouraging them to go out there and BUY the album as we all have (some of us multiple copies, even...weeks ahead of its actual release date).
In the meantime, don't support or spread or upload to torrents! TELL YOUR FRIENDS the same thing.

This is the moment The Avett Brothers have been waiting for. Let's not steal it from them.

These guys got where they are by word of mouth and pure love. In this day and age, internet leaks are a near inevitability, especially with early copies floating out there in the media as early as they've been. The leaks hurt, but they won't ruin their album sales. Folks who "get" The Avett Brothers...well, most of them, they get it. And they'll use their dollar (even in this economy) to show their appreciation for this band. They'll also TELL THEIR FRIENDS.

Also...Feed the love, not the trolls. Let's not debate this forever. It's pointless. Really.

We can't control it all. Just do your best.

Don't get your panties in a wad over this folks. As Angi said, albums leak; it is impossible to stop it in this day & age. Bands do indeed make the majority of their money off touring & merch. Most of us have already pre-ordered the album & others WILL buy it. GET OVER IT!!!!

word.

i've followed enough band message boards in my day to know that while discussion is great and at (few, usually) times rewarding, trying to change someone's mind over the internet is NEVER, EVER going to happen. i feel like some people on this board haven't realized that yet. sometimes you just have to ignore the turkeys.

i'm not going to listen to the album until it resides in my hands. at the same time, this argument over downloading always erupts it seems with the anti-downloaders getting all huffy and defensive instantly. usually the friendly, gradual counter-argument works better. don't be so high and mighty! i have friends in bands that love to play and give music away for free. they won't ever get very far doing it, but all the power to em to do whatever they think is right. i on the other hand have no problem receiving payment for what i think my time and effort is worth, even when last night i played a house show for free as i have many times.

and remember...arguing over the internet is like running in the special olympics, and well...i'll let you find the end to that one if you haven't heard it already.

What do i think about the new album leaking?....hm, well i'm having an ear orgasm right now. i don't feel too bad cuz i spent 100 dollars on the deluxe box set.

Aaronm,

Would you please send me some free art or music or what ever it is that you have created yourself?

Thanks,
Greg

How many times do they have to delete the threads about this topic before we stop talking about it? Third time might be the charm...

----------
There was a dream, and one day I could see it, like a bird in a cage I broke in and demanded that somebody free it.

I think the point about artists, painters and sculptors selling their work is somewhat invalid. People don't blindly buy their work, they experience it in some capacity first. They go to a museum and see it, they come across it online or in someone else's possession. If they're my sister they'll take a picture of a painting or portrait and self-develop it, content with an imperfect version. Someone else may visit the museum weekly or purchase the real thing. In most instances music works the same way, people not willing to buy an entire CD without having heard more than a single good track. Some will take it all and enjoy it in the format they find, some people will just go back to myspace or youtube and play the song again and again when they want to hear it, and some will go out and buy the CD to enjoy the full experience of having something, music and packaging, completely created by an artist.

There are always people who will be satisfied with a grainy 4x6 or low-quality MP3 and there will always be those who want the original. I don't see the use in fighting that, because even though exposure increases the first group the latter will always grow with it.

And I think I know you, Aaron.
