Talk On Indolence.
November Blue... still can make me weepy after 100s of hears!!
Mine was "The Lowering". I was at a show that I was dragged to right after 4 thieves gone was released and this was thier opening song. I was hooked after this song and how into it they were, they didnt even open thier eyes. The very next song they played talk on indolence and I was like, "Holy Crap!" So after one song I loved them, after two they were my favorite band.
"Talk on Indolence" was my first song. Thankfully, a college pal of mine left his CD collection in my car and "Four Thieves Gone" was the first album I popped in.
Nothing Short of Thankful...thanks to LifeisGood. I was skeptical as first but when the musical genius of the Avett Brothers hit my ears. I knew I was in love.
I Would Be Sad. I was sitting in my Volvo in front of Office Depot.
"Colorshow" On the student radio station of the University of Idaho. A friend called me at 3am, woke me up, and told me he was going to play a song for me that will blow me away. After "Colorshow" he then played the entire album and my wife and I woke up and listened to ever second! That was the first time we had heard TAB. My buddy found the CD on a dusty shelf while doing the midnight shift at the radio station and decided to give it a try. All three of us fell in love with TAB that night at 4am local time. I'm forever in his debt!
I'm really not sure, but I the first song I really remember hearing and liking is Distraction #74. I think that was the one that began my obsession.
Traveling Song. I was visiting my son and he popped A Carolina Jubilee in my car CD player. I've been hooked ever since.
n fact, little did I know, that moment would be responsible helping me to make some changes in my life. I'm still working towards those changes for the better. I don't think I can say that about any of the other music I listen to.
Love like the Movies... this is the song that got me wanting to hear more of them, because it was unique... and now they're my absolute favorite!
The Lowering was the first song on the mix cd I received, but November Blue from Country Was got me hooked.
I went to a show not knowing anything about the band.
About two lines into "Shame" i was hooked.
Swept Away (sentimental version) ......thought it was very sweet, low key and nice mood music (chicka wow-wow) ....when i hit Four Thieves Gone i absolutely dident know what hit me.....amazing stuff my friends....needless to say i'm itchin for the next one...seems sooooo far off though..
at the beach
I think it was "Love like the Movies"...Rock the Block Winston-Salem, NC summer of 05. I went not knowing a thing about The Avett Brothers. My friend warned me that I probably would not like them...Ha!
November Blue (from Country Was)! A friend put it on a mix along with Talk on Indolence. I actually couldn't stand Talk on Indolence at first, but I fell in love with November Blue (don't worry... now I LOVE both). But the song that actually got me 100% completely hooked a few months later was I Would Be Sad.
Pretty Girl From Annapolis from Live Vol. 2
"Will You Return," boyfriend showed it to me and wasn't crazy about it. Sounded like silly punk boys trying to play bluegrass. But when he showed me more songs and I realized it was the other way around, legit bluegrass boys dabbling in punk, it was much more endearing.
#2 was "At the Beach", which had me dancing like a fool, and #3, the incredibly lovely "Bella Donna"....and I was hooked for life.
Pretty Girl from Mathews, when my friend Scott (not THE Scott) gave me CountryWas.
live = Shame
studio version = Salvation Song
"Die Die Die"
first song i ever heard was "i killed sally's lover" live. I immediately ran to the cd table and bought mignonette.
Distraction #74. I had never even heard of the Avett Brothers, but caught them at a Mountain Stage performance in Athens, OH. When they came out, I had no idea what to expect... but I was absolutely blown away and have been addicted ever since!
November Blue. I found out they were going to be playing about .10 of mile from my house and there were some fliers up around town. I searched the "internets" and found NB and it was love at first listen.
Me & God, compliments of MegaPav
It's a shame that I can't remember but my best guess is "Die, Die, Die." I downloaded "Emotionalism" after reading a review of it somewhere. Listened to it a fair amount but didn't become incredibly obsessed until about a month before I saw them live for the first time. kateb and I went to see them together and were completely blown away. We've been hooked ever since
Love like the movies, sang and played on guitar by my brother. They impressed me even through a middle man.
I saw them play Paranoia in B-flat Major on Conan. It was the most amazing thing I had ever seen. I then proceeded to watch every youtube video of them that I could find. I bought Emotionalism the very next day. It's been all avett all the time since then.
Talk on Indolence for me..kept the cd in for several weeks following that..until I found a copy of Live Volume II at a record store.
first song i remember was offering.. I didn't like it.. it was the version from Live Vol. 2.. It grew on me needless to say..
Left on Laura, Left on Lisa.
I was at a party in Tuscaloosa. It was about 2 in the morning, and everyone had had their fair share of alcohol (and then much, much more). I was on the front porch talking with a friend of mine. Suddenly, one of the people that live in the house burst through the front door with a guitar, and proceeded to sing Left on Laura, Left on Lisa as loud as he could, with everyone filing out once they heard him to come sing along. An amazing experience.
And it's still my favorite TAB song.
In the Curve at the Ribfest --- this song is awesome --
Similar to shortatry:
(and I'll just use my own quotes)
"I went to a show not knowing anything about the band.
About two lines into "Shame" i was hooked."
Same deal. Saw them live and I think Shame is the first thing that hooked me.
Talk On Indolence.
pretty girl at the airport, and it wasnt even from them...i heard my brother playing it with his friend back in july 05
I was going through the Bonaroo 08 lineup and the sample song for The Avett Brothers, a band I had never heard of, was Die Die Die. I thought the song was as interesting as the title. I proceeded to their website and started viewing the videos. The more I watched and listened the more I realized that these guys were something very special. Special enough to become the only band that I had to see out of all the bands at Bonaroo.
Die Die Die. I am so hooked. My coworkers think I have a problem. Only been a fan a year but feel like I've listened to them all of my life.
November Blue Favorite song when 3 years ago, favorite song now. Cant get enough. Country Was version is awesome, also Pickathon 2006 is incredible as well.
"When I Drink" - a few years ago group of my friends and I started a cd challenge in which we choose a theme, each member of the group develops a cd around the theme, then we meet at a local establishment to discuss who's cd is best. One of the members included When I Drink on his disc for the best songs of the year. I have been a fan ever since.
The Offering.
It was in a mix of a cd that I had received at a wedding. And I became an immediate fan, about 4 years ago.
Sanguine, under the sun in the Virgin Islands through crappy speakers. And it spread...
mine was nothing short of thankful ...on a paste sampler cd...well it was a DVD ....so it was the nothing short of thankful music video ...like 4 or 5 years ago.......i have been in love ever since
I heard Shame on kexp.org
"When I Drink" I think. This is so hard to remember. The first live song was "All My Mistakes".

A friend played me Smoke in our lights...The hair on my arms stood up when Seth's voice cracks at the "when i asked you, what did you say" part. I asked him to play it again...then asked him to start the whole CD over...then ended up taking the CD with me...I was hooked. Thank you Salazar for playing that song after one of our wednesday nights out so long ago!
The Traveling Song. I'd read a blurb in No Depression, ordered A Carolina Jubilee & by song three I was completely hooked.
I was in the car with my friend and she popped in their cd and said that I would LOVE these boys....the first song she played for me was "Will You Return?" And my answer was yes, yes, and yes.
I still thank her for introducing me to their music. Love at first listen that has changed my life!
November Blue. Great!
