Will Rick Ruben Send TAB Down The Wrong Road?

I hope they don't go down that road. Stay who you are. The famous are far away from the love that let share our name!

Replies for this Board Topic

I believe that even if the Avett Brothers become famous, and even go in a direction we do not agree with, that they will at least continue to create good music. So I'm not too worried.

has this been discussed before?

decide what to be and go be it.

People have been making a topic like this once or so every few months since the partnership was even announced lol

Oh I hope they go down that road just so they can be famous sellouts and make a ton load of money..
Eye-wink

no.

they already have gone down that road...

They knew it. They said they never should have turned that wheel.
I think they said it in an interview or something...

Things change and get strange with the movement of time, it's happening right now to you.

to this day, i can still crank up Country Was, 4 Thieves, Emotionalism, without growing weary of the music.
i can't say the same for I & Love & You.

If by "down the wrong road" you mean "grow and expand their musical horizons and become a better band than they were the day before"... then YES!

But if it's the same old cyncism we've seen in previous threads on this same topic, then NO.

I agree with WillComply. Find myself rarely if ever choosing to listen to I&L&Y. Whereas the others I'm always happy to hear. I think they have gone down that road. At this point, I'm not too pleased about the direction of the music but I'm also hopeful that there's at least a chance of it coming around.

Here's what I don't understand - you don't like their new music. OK, I get that, you're entitled to your opinion, and that's fine. But why does the fact that YOU don't like their new album make them sell-outs or going down a "wrong road?" Couldn't it just be that they've changed directions as many artists do or they tried a different way of doing things, and you just didn't like it? Why does it have to become a degradation of their character?

Says it pretty well I think...

I listen to I & L & U just as much, maybe because I am trying to get that dern rap down for SFOS! I will admit...I sometimes skip the song I & L &U but that is prolly because of the taint it endured from hearing it over and over and over again at the video shoot : ) which I wouldn't have missed for most anything..btw

Heids,
I'm not sure who your post was directed at but I'm not seeing anyone who is defaming them in any way. People are voicing opinions about the music, but I don't think the "wrong road" comment is directed at the character of the band at all. As most here can attest to, tAB's music is an intensely personal experience. I'd bet as often as not, when an intense memory or time in life is tied to music, it's tied to tAB for a lot of the folks on the board. I think this is where the road comes in. At least it does for me. When I say they've gone down that road, I just mean they've moved in a direction musically that is influenced by a lot of stuff. That direction is probably determined more than anything by their own musical desires and interests. But I think we'd be remiss to state that they are the only people driving the bus now. There are influences coming from a lot of directions, something countless bands encounter when they sign with their first major label, or when they get their first good recording budget. `I have no doubt that the boys are in this for all the right reasons. That said, I don't think that precludes them from making mistakes, or from making music that some will feel let down by. But those are just opinions, each person's relationship with the songs, or each person's desire for them to follow the musical path that they feel in sync with. Back to the road. As every band's music evolves, so does theirs. I have my own reasons that I feel less engaged with the new album. I've largely kept them quiet on the board after seeing the reaction to other negative criticism. But the hope I have for my relationship to the music comes from the overwhelming amount of precedent they've built with me. I understand and appreciate that most love this album. I don't. But I'm hopeful and confident they'll bring me back into the fold. There are few bands that have a catalog that I universally love. I love Wilco, but there are two albums I can't stand.

I don't think there is anything wrong with the fellas. I (me, myself) don't particularly agree with the latest musical choices. But that's me. I come here to see what other people think. I've read and considered all sorts of takes on this album, and taken the time to see if it would grow on me. But sadly it hasn't. And I sincerely hope the next one does, cause I love this band.

I think The Avett Brothers are sending Rick Rubin down the wrong road. Pretty soon he'll be eating sausages with **gasp** Lance Armstrong.

Hey Samonid, Uncle Tupelo was better than anything that Wilco ever did...

How's your reading comprehension? This is sooooo boring.

Rejoice always, Mark

Demic13,

Saw Uncle Tupelo several times. Some of my favorite shows ever.

Bob,
I'm responding to this thread, which I assumed Heids was responding to. If they've been defamed elsewhere on the board that's beyond what I'm responding to. But hey, I've seen you degrade plenty of people for having an opinion you don't agree with. If it's sooo boring, why not stay away?

"But hey, I've seen you degrade plenty of people for having an opinion you don't agree with. If it's sooo boring, why not stay away?"

You are correct. I admit to that failing. Sorry for the attitude. In this case, it just seemed pretty obvious that the thread was aimed at the Avett's integrity. It was more than just not liking a song or album.

As for boring, we have run this topic into the ground - at least until the next album. It is getting easier and easier to stay away.

Ok, so Northbound is a clueless new fan, which is fine, or a troll, which is endlessly annoying.

"As for boring, we have run this topic into the ground - at least until the next album. It is getting easier and easier to stay away"

I agree Bobz...easier and easier. If they'd just fix the damn search function, a lot of these repeat topics wouldn't happen, not all, but a lot anyway.

Album, schmalbum. It's always been about the songs. There are some great ones on this album, whether it's your favorite or not, who cares? I DARE YA to stop listening to this band. You won't.

Their message, the integrity of them as actual living and breathing and thinking people, their passion, their humanity, that's what will keep you coming back for more. Albums come and go, but I do believe the heart and soul of the Avett Brothers will stand the test of time and make them and their music something worth following for a long time.

And if it compromises all that...they will go, and so will we as a fanbase. In the meantime, plenty of us still here, eagerly awaiting the next one.

Still, as for this topic in general...I'm calling Dead Horse! Unfortunately, even a functional Search function would probably not stop the endless rehash.

Agreed, but I am looking forward to The Third Gleam.

"Happy's not the word, you make me free."

Correct me if I am wrong, but the bonus cd that came with the box set was essentially their demo cd for Rick when they went into the studio with him. So the songs for I and Love and You were already layed out... Rick just cleaned them up a bit, organized them, add a few artistic elements... which I thought was nice! He didn't ruin their sound... he showed everyone how wonderful the guys are as musicians! I see it this way... their lives have changed since they started writing, they were young writing about girls in the begining and now they are married, so naturally their song topics are going to change. This is just one side of the many changes they have gone through over the PAST 10 YEARS!!!!!!!!!!! Think of it this way, the beatles sound changed through their many albums and some didn't like the change but they are still noted as one of the best bands ever and for many reasons!!!!

THEY ARE GOING TO CHANGE... just the same as the clothes on your back change, but always remember the guys wearing the cloths will have the same love of writing songs and performing... so sit back and enjoy, isn't that the point!

Samonid, like I said, if you don't like the album, fine. That's cool, I have no problem with that. If you don't like the direction they're taking musically, then I am sorry you're disappointed. I am not disappointed, but I respect your opinion.

But saying someone is going down a "wrong road" does implicate their character and there have been pllllleeeenty of threads devoted to the Avetts selling out for fame, etc. So I just sort of assumed this was another one of those. But you know what they say about assumptions.

Agree re: tediousness of this topic. I have been ignoring them as of late but for some reason, yesterday I was feeling kinda ornery and so I jumped in. I'll jump back out now. Y'all have a good day.

I’m scared by the way that my life is getting gone

Wait a minute. You mean they aren't already famous? Hmmmmmm, NYE presale sells out in a nanosecond. Move next door to 6000+ venue and sell out..........6000+ at Bojanglles in Charlotte in Aug '09........7000+ sell out at Koka Booth in '08. Regularly sell out 2000+ outside of NC. Going to Europe and Australia no less!

Shhhhhh...........don't let our little secret out.

Please talk slowly. I don't hear good anymore.

saying someone might be taking the wrong road, implies you have the road map. and if you have the road map to a succesful indie band that can provide for a growing family without selling records to an expanding audience, then I and every guitar playing schlub would love to have it. But i'm pretty sure it doesn't exist.

Like DFrench said...people act like Rick Rubin wrote the songs for them. It is still pure Avett music just with better equipment and engineers who like to add a little tuba everyonce in a while. A band is supposed to grow, expand, experiment and continue to find ways to make better music. I like I&L&Y a lot, but even if i didn't I wouldnt assume that I knew the better way for them to grow. (that said, im pretty sure that version of Die, Die, Die on ACL is a dead end haha.)

I know this subject has been beaten to death already, but I think its a great conversation to be having. I think if you went back through history of some of the greatest artist of all time, at some point in their journey a few loyal fans of budding bands have had this discussion. I'm sure a couple fanboys in London circa 1968 thought it was a horrible idea for The New Yardbirds to change the name to Led Zepplin.

Rick Rubin was the producer of their album, and obviously a friend of the band, but is not IN the band. He is not driving the bus. Like Dfrench81 said, the pre-Rubin demos were stylistically very similar to the album. If you dislike the new direction the Avetts are heading in, it's either their fault, or yours. Not Rubin's.

He is not telling them what to wear, how to play, or what to sing about. They've been at this for a good while, and as a songwriter, I can tell you that with time and definitely with different tools, the sound of the songs will change. The songwriter will change. How the songs are played will change.

If you don't like it, I respect your opinion, and your right to bring it up on this message board.

YardSaleArsonist & thisheart - You made me think of the classic Dylan video of the people booing him and walking away when he first plugged in... bet those people feel like idiots now!!!! HAHAHA Like Dylan, the Avetts are going to do what they want to do! God bless them for it... it is about time we have real music again!!!

What I don't like about their popularity is the thought of some "kid" having Avett brothers on their Ipod right next to Lady GAGA and not understanding who and what the Avetts really are. What I like about it is that between concerts, I get to watch them on random TV shows!
--
But their good times come with prices
And I can't believe it when I hear the jokes they make
At anyone's expese except their own
Would they laugh if they knew who paid?

I'm thankful that maybe "that kid" will be exposed to some good music. This isn't some exclusive club, the music is accessible to everyone.

On a semi-related note. We had a "kid" in our car the other weekend. This particular kid loves top 40/urban/rap and has never, ever been exposed to anything else. I happened to have Langhorne Slim's new album in the player. He asked to hear Land of Dreams again. Then every time we got in the car he asked to listen to it again.

Interesting. Being a newbie to the Avett world, let me explain to you how it works: You listen to a band, who references a band, and you check it out.
I found out about the Avetts through a band called Ha Ha Tonka, who talk of the Brothers with large respect. So if I like Ha Ha, and they love the Avetts, I am going to check them out. Period. All this crap about sell-outs and such, well the band and the songs aren't for you. They are for everyone. That's you, me, the kid with lady ga-ga on his Ipod, the metalheads, etc. If they get it, they get it. How amazingly selfish of all of you who feel that way. It's not about you. When I hear something amazing, like the Avetts, I want to tell everyone, which is why 12 of us are going to the Milwaukee show. What's the point of keeping it a secret? So that you can have your little elite clubs? That's very fourth grade. And honestly, if you aren't listening to I&L&Y, then you are missing out on some of the best music released in the past 10 years, from the the stomp at the end of Laundry Room to the pop of Tin Man. Shame on you. Get over yourself. Go donate blood or volunteer at a Children's Hospital. The world is bigger than you.

well put "the world is bigger than you" :0

You had me till you shamed people for having an *opinion* that's different from yours. Boo.

But I do dig on the rest of it. I'll give it a B+ for a first post, and welcome to the elitist club!

Stirred: I have several old friends who are "hip-hop heads" that I've turned on to our elite music club.
One guy who listens to nothing besides Gucci Mane and Lil Wayne went with me to Bristol R&RR and was dancin like a fool with the rest of us to HGTR and Hoots & Hellmouth.
He's going to Rhythem & Roots with us again this year.
Good music is good music.

I know I'm probably like the 25th person to ask this, but who's Rick Ruben?
--

Major producer... just Google him.

You have probably seen a pic of him and would never have realized that he does what he does. Totally the whole thing about not judging a book by its cover.

It's actually spelled Rubin. But I do love a Reuben.
