Yelling out request in Grand Rapids
So in grand rapids.. a couple fans thought it would be great to keep yelling November blue as loud as the possibly could.... as fans i felt horrible toward tab on stage and felt it was an incredible lack of respect... every song that tab chooses to preform for us is a gift... us regular fans need to step up and discourage fans from being "that guy" at the show... i understand it happens but for those that were not in attendance of the Grand Rapids show... this crossed the line..
hopefully in the future as fans we can try and combat these fans taking it over the top

I hate that too, but what can you do? I do distinctly recall the usual loud talking during one of the slower ones in NYC--Murder or Bella Donna, or similar, not sure, and I and numerous people shushed pretty loudly. It did help.
Did that happen or am I making that up? pretty sure it did. We can certainly try to shut up the rude talkers.
For the annoying and rude requests, what can be done other than confronting someone? and that seems very un-TAB-spirited.

As a fan, I have come to know and love almost every AB song. There are a few that have a special place in my heart, but if I don't hear them that night it just makes me feel as if it wasn't meant to be and it encourages me to go see them again. I agree with "maksyn", the songs TAB preform each night are a gift. We should just be grateful they came to our town.
Live Avetts puts me into a zone, I dont usually get annoyed with other patrons. Unless....they are making their way through the crowd and I graciously move back as to give them passing room and they try to post up in front of me...I have been known to move those people along one way or the other, nicely usually...but in Philly I did have to shove a couple along with force. Its rude to take advantage of others kindness, I could just be a jerk and make them walk around me and the people in front of me, but no I'm a nice guy.
I read gripes about singers at shows, but honestly if anyone at NYE in Charlotte remembers it was a 2 hour sing along every song almost was 100% crowd participation, in larger venues that is where the emptiness goes away and is filled with the energy we are used to feeling in small venues with TAB. Get ready for more of the sing alongs with larger venues on the horizon, and I welcome it personally cause our band takes good care of allowing us presale tickets in good spots....(i read the gripes over presale too but still like it better than before it was offered.)
Well, I might be in the minority here but I will openly admit that I have been and will likely continue to be one of those people who loudly yells requests at shows. Some shows I have done it a lot, and some shows I've only done it a time of two, but it's always loud. Anyway, I am now convinced that the boys actually love to hear requests, and appreciate it quite a bit. That being said, I know there are shows where people get pretty belligerent, and definitely cross a line in their request yelling. I do however think that taking action against these people is completely against the TAB-spirit as Chilixx said.
I know that sometimes I can take this band, their shows, and their music a bit too seriously, but I try to remember that the boys themselves seem to always carry themselves with a humility, and straightforwardness that suggests this thing should never be taken too seriously. I guess what I'm trying to say is that I think the band themselves rarely if ever gets upset with fans, and doesn't ever take themselves too seriously, so maybe we should try to do the same. I'm really not trying to come off as condescending here, because I have many times had to remind myself of this same thing, so I hope no one takes what I'm saying as being such.
Anyway, for whatever it's worth, that's my opinion...

Thats it...I am starting a timdogs a meany thread right now..hahahahaha, No I think you hit the nail on the head. People doing something that violates you or your space is different. When I am standing or sitting up front all those people singing behind me are just part of it, NYE was awesome, the biggest sing along I have ever heard and I was at the top of the place almost last row.
Timdog we gotta meet when you are on the east coast, I hope we can cross paths at a show. Having to cancel my PDX trip was a bummer.
as long as someone is not yelling a request during a song its ok with me. you've got to remember not everyone out there are die hard fans like most of us here on this board. and its typical at any show for people to yell out request. sometimes it may be rude and sometimes it may not be.

ninety and risen, soon we'll have to hide out in the shade. somewhere its raining and babe i can almost hear you say, that you love me
Just be glad they're not shouting out "Freebird" or other such nutty obnoxiousness...
I was at the show in Grand Rapids....the group yelling "November Blue" over and over probably crossed the line a little, but I was the guy that yelled "Scott, Weight of Lies?" and they played it. It's my wife's favorite song and I'm glad I did it.
If the boys didn't like the shout outs or wanted to stop them they could simply not play the songs.
Oh, a request or two here or there doesn't bother me--it's the people who yell out the same thing over and over--"Bob's mom" yelling out Greensboro Woman repeatedly in Philly, anyone? Once someone yells it, the band hears it (probably)--they'll play it or they won't. Yelling it out repeatedly is like demanding them to play it and that's rude. And, like Maksyn, I'm happy with anything and I like to hear what they feel is the next natural choice. Just my opinion. I do have things I want to hear, though, so I get why people verbalize that. For the record, Tim, I don't remember you yelling out any requests in PDX--did you?
And singing during the fast songs is fine by me--others won't agree, but I do it. But when it's Seth and a guitar and he's singing Ballad of Love and Hate--I want to hear Seth. Even Bob's mom would agree with that.

I also don't mind the occasional request, but agree w/chilixx. Once they have heard the request, stop!
I am happy with whatever they play even though I have some I really want to hear and haven't yet. Please Pardon Yourself, Salvation Song, Pretty Girl From Matthews, and If It's The Beaches are really high on my list, but it makes going to shows that much more exciting wondering if this is gonna be the night I hear them!!
Didn't someone shout Freebird in DC? Good grief.

stirred--yep, we got the Freebrid request. BUT, the guy who said "My wife sure LOVES If it's the Beaches..." was actually pretty funny in DC.

haha...I forgot him....didn't he also say "it's her birthday" which was probably a lie...

just enjoy the music the best you can it is a rock show, the written rules of no smoking and stay out of the isles are not follwed, so there is no way respectful to your neighbor will be high on the ajenda of some. just block it out or move if your botherd by someone cause most of the time a direct altercation will ruin an entire evening. a.k.a handcuffs and a s***ty room with a bunch of a**holes, the ones you wanted to get away from anyway. so just move or suck it up the worlds not perfect and TAB's is getting that way more and more, but i will go see them live any time anyplace.
I get super happy when not one single idiot yells out a band members name after the "which brother is better" line during Murder In The City. I think it shows a lot of disrespect to do that in the middle of such an intense song. I really don't think Scott appreciates it either.
What did Scott say in Santa Cruz?
Scott: "I wonder which brother's better..."
Fan: "BOBBY!!!!!!!!!!"
Scott: "You've just been waitin for that alllll night, haven't ya?"
In typical Scott Avett form, he did not get angry, but he did pause, and (I think) tried to stifle his own laugh before making the comment to the fan.
I agree that doing that sort of thing interrupts the seriousness of the line, but in Santa Cruz it was a little funny and created a great moment later on when Bob returned to the stage.
Stuff like that, however, is really only funny once or twice. If I were Scott and heard someone going for the obvious joke night after night, it would probably make me want to stop playing the song for awhile.
Steve Earle's reply to someone yelling out "Freebird."
"F*#K You."
Unknown Henson's reaction to song request.
"I know the names of my songs. I don't need some whiskey'd up a**hole to remind me. How 'bout this. How 'bout I play what I want and you decided if you want to stay and shut the hell up or go back to your trailer."
LOL!!!!!
I know, I know.....some of you don't have the constitution for stuff like that and probably think Ol' Unknown is a "meany-pants." Well, actually he probably is, but I thought it was brilliant. Certainly it fits his character and I'm definitely not suggesting that TAB employ the same tactics......just sharing some experiences.

There are some funny Jeff Tweedy vids up where he chastises crowd members, even one where he punches a dude trying to kiss him on stage.
You should only yell out a request when they ask plain and simple... As my dad used to say...sit back be quiet and enjoy the ride.

"The last Todd Snider show I went to was out of control. After every song the crowd erupted with requests, and he freakin loved it." Todd shut down our first show with him because some obnoxious drunk girl wouldn't stop making requests. Todd is a bit unpredictable. The Avetts are not. I like that about both of them.
I'm voting for the one or two requests per show per person between songs only.

Generally the only request I shout out is "USE YOUR DISCRETION!" and they always do. They must like me or something.
I've found that - "PLAY A LOVE SONG!" - works about 85% of the time.
I personally hate the "Freebird" morons almost as much as I hate the "Gabriella" morons. The name of the song isn't frickin' "Gabriella"...if you request something, at least have the right name of the song! If you're going to request something, let's get crazy and request "Feb 20, 2000" or "Bye Bye Bluebird"
To add on this string, in NYC, the band is setting up in the following line-up: Seth, keyboards; Scott, drums: Bob, electric bass, and Joe onstage. Some idiot yells out "Ballad of Love and Hate". I really doubt they would ever use that line-up to play that song. Just a doubt.
Sit back and enjoy whatever they give us!

Yeah at the Rochester show, some guy kept yelling out "Play Me & God!!" every time the band finished a song.
It got to the point that he threw in some profanity....
Nice thing to do when your requesting a song bout God, Ha.
Whoops Double Post....

OMG, that's brilliant. I wish I'd thought of that first, but the fact that I didn't isn't gonna stop me from using it.
I went through a phase of shouting "We like you, Paul" to Langhorne's now departed bassist.
I kinda miss Paul, to tell the truth. Remember when he got fitshaced at the NYE show? He was a riot and the boys were so patient with his stage invasion. Man, those were some good shows.

Sorry to the band, sorry to those in attendance at the Meijer Garden show as I feel responsible for the rudeness as it was I who introduced my brother to this band and it was he who was the rude one. I had multiple people come up to me (as our group swelled to about 30) and ask me to put a clamp on him. If you know him, there are no clamps strong enough. Sorry again guys, I can't tell you how many times similar incidents have happened like this. I did catch the whole perfomance and you can see the guys laugh it off some, it's the only file I am having trouble getting off the SD card at this point though....

What’s the point in shouting anything? I just don’t get the desire that people have to draw attention to themselves. “use your discretion” ?? Isn’t that what they are doing? Why shout it out? I think if the band asks what the crowd wants to hear then they open the door. If the band does not ask for suggestions I think its obnoxious to shout at them. To shout a song title over and over is beyond obnoxious.
i think one of the first times i saw them, it was a show in eugene OR and someone yelled some song out and they promptly said "we don't do requests" and proceeded to play whatever song the person requested. it was pretty great.
however, that was a tiny show. i have no problem with people requesting songs at shows, as long as they don't get annoying with it. as always there is a line and some people are drunk/stupid enough to cross it. at sasquatch i think there was a small group of people that kept yelling out the same song after at least a few songs. maybe it was november blue, i don't remember.
At the Akron show Seth said that they "appreciate all the requests ya'll"
They don't play with a set list. They do that, as I understand it, in part to tailor the songs they play to the mood of the crowd.
So if their desire is to play songs that fit the mood of the crowd perhaps an occasional request is exactly what they need.
The incessant yelling gets really annoying. No doubt about it. But if you yell out a request once, they hear it, and then if they choose to they'll play it.
And if you get a request played don't yell for a 2nd one. That I'm pretty confident they don't appreciate.
Everything in moderation.

I know exacty what you mean. I find myself bracing every time during this song and hope no one yells anything out.
Wobble: "And Chili, I think I'm on board with you about Ballad - but I did see a video recently where the whole crowd was singing (and not screaming) along and it was really beautiful and I think it may have given Darling goose bumps, or maybe that was me. "
I also know what you mean here. There have been times when I've had this experience, and it can be nice, when everyone is singing along in harmony. Overall I don't like it, b/c usually there is one person (or more) that's singing OVER everyone else or Scott/Seth, but yeah, sometimes, it does make sense--especially certain verses--like it seems a lot of people tend to sing "Always remember there was nothing worth sharing like the love that let us share our name" together and it's pretty cool.
and along the same murder in the city line...i did love in indy, when everyone was singing along pretty loudly and pretty much in tune if i remember correctly... and after "he said i love you and i'm proud of you both, in so many different ways." scott took a beat, smiled, and said something to the effect of "did he tell y'all that too"?

It's great when they pull out that "we don't do requests" line. I have noticed that quite often the requested song does not get played that night but may well appear at the next show. Last night Bob said they are really working on the old stuff at sound checks. He didn't think they were quite ready for Locust last night, but we assured him that they pulled it off in wonderful style.
By the way, I shouted out for The Lowering. Let's see if it appears in Lexington.
Also, I love the Nameless Dot (in a purely platonic, non-worshipful and not sexual way).

I dont mind yelling out a song. I am guilty of it too.
I think you need to stop yelling after it is heard once though.

Do the best you can and that wont go unseen
I was at a Old Crow Medicine Show concert at the TLA in Philly about 4 years ago. There was this big loud-mouthed dude screaming at the Banjo player Critter Fuqua, "...CRITTERNATOR...CRITTERNATOR...CRITTERNATOR" Over and over like 20 times at ear shattering level about 20 feet from Critter, who finally just locked eyes and nodded to the guy real wide eyed like as to acknowledge he heard him loud and clear. I felt embarrassed for the guy and I didn't even know him.

My friend was telling me this story, and it was definitely a highlight of the show for her. I think the brothers would welcome certain unexpected (or maybe not so) quips. Its part of playing live.
She also talked a lot about the SC mid song band meeting. And everyone awing at Scotts banjo retirement.
And seth saying something like "bob just said good its time for the banjo to go."
i dont know the exact dialogue.
