Yet another Rolling Stone mention
http://www.rollingstone.com/rockdaily/index.php/2009/08/03/newport-folk-...
"the festival’s standout performance came from the Avett Brothers, a band whose sound — a mix of traditional bluegrass/folk signifiers, baby-faced sentiment, and punk abandon — so aptly represents those tensions. Judging by tunes like “Kick Drum Heart” and “A Perfect Space” the quartet refined the formula nicely for their forthcoming major-label debut. Call it “folk-punk” or “grunge-grass,” the Avetts have stumbled upon one of the last untapped youth demographics in American music. Predictably, they also incited the most heated sit-stand conflicts with Newport’s lawn-chaired elite."

Now that is classic!

Rejoice always, Mark
nice..... Was there really a conflict about sitting and standing?
I didn't notice too much of a conflict...most people sat, but there were large sections of people standing. We stood for the first few songs and someone asked us to sit down so they could see, and we did. We could have easily moved to where we could stand, but I was in the mood to sit and enjoy quietly rather than stomp and scream, so it was ok.
The problem for me came the next day while Arlo Guthrie was playing. I was smoking on a path between grassy sections just in front of and slightly to the side of a vendor's truck. I didn't think I was obstructing the view anymore than the truck was, but apparently I was wrong. A man came up and very harshly tapped me on my shoulder and gruffly said "Why don't you take it somewhere else, you're blocking everyone's view." I didn't appreciate the rough shoulder tap (I REALLY don't like being touched by strangers) but I didn't say anything. I did, however, comply with his wishes, and as I walked away, I heard him call me "b****" under his breath.
Kind of went against the whole "Peace, Love, Harmony" vibe that I would think would be evident at a folk festival, but whatever.

Will you forget when we have paid our debts,
who did we borrow from, who did borrow from?
Wow, I'm sorry to hear that.
Oh it's no big deal. I've been called worse, both for good reason and no reason at all. Sometimes I deserve to be called names and I'm not. It all comes out in the wash. What are you going to do?
I'm so glad that the Avetts got such a positive response in Rolling Stone....there was a similar sentiment in the local papers the day after they played. If I can find it, I'll post it. It was really a great festival.

Rolling Stone is not what is used to be (cutting edge music magazine)
It back to back months they had the Jonas Brothers and the guy who won/(runner up?) American Idol

Do the best you can and that wont go unseen
Rolling Stone may not be the same. I don't think it's been cutting edge in over a decade, but it's still doesn't hurt for the Avett Brothers to get a mention when they article is about one of the oldest, most respected festivals and there are tons of highly acclaimed and well established artists playing. Good for them for standing out in the crowd.

We are the true believers.
it sounds like there is a lot of animosity involved with this festival... from the political jargon, to talking trash about people watching on, to fans having quarrels about sitting / standing / etc....
now i don't take sides in any of this mess - I just don't like to hear it when I'm trying to enjoy music.... gott a say that this article did little to sell me on the festival itself ( which i know they aren't trying to do)

Well Locust, Mount Pleasant, Concord.... LETS GOOO!
Yeah I agree any exposure is good for the Avetts.
I actually did not read the article my post was more of state of Rolling Stone then anything else. You are also right RS has not been cutting edge for over a decade.

TAB's were amazing at Newport! It was so great to hear people talking about those 'Ah-vett' brothers for hours after their set. I went just to see them (and maybe Ben Kweller, Gillian Welch, and Ramblin Jack Elliot) and they were definitely worth the 8 hour drive. I was pleasantly surprised to hear Distraction #74 and Talk on Indolence since they're a little older but still 2 of my favorites.
Also, I think I was one of those pesky standers as well but no one said anything to me. Was there some kind of big issue that I missed?
I don't want anyone to think that the Newport Folk Festival is a bad festival. In fact, it was quite the opposite. We commented repeatedly on how clean the grounds were, well-mannered the crowd was and how wholesome the event was all around. I was absolutely entranced by the music and thoroughly enjoyed myself.

how could TAB not steal the show?

"a woman's heart runs on gasoline"
Heidi- to go along with your situation, my brother-in-law and his girlfriend witnessed 2 people arguing with each other about the whole stand up/ sit down thing while Pete Seeger was singing "Turn, turn, turn" again, totally going against the 'peace, love, harmony' vibe we were experiencing as well! Luckily, we encountered nothing but happiness that day! I would travel back to it again, my children as well! I was completely jealous of the boaters behind the main stage. What a perfect day to spend on a boat, enjoying cool water, and listening to music. Yeah, they didn't pay, but they were at least smart enough to take advantage of the open waters!
totally forgot to mention that it is great that they stole the show that day! they were the only band where most people around us were standing and dancing! Plus, I did see a large amount of Avett shirts being warn after their set!
