You say the Avetts have changed. I ask, changed from What?
---So for all those avett msg board purists, here is a record of when I joined, how many posts I have and my first post. hehehehe.
1st Post "Wow, the message board is up!" POSTED: MONDAY, DECEMBER 6, 2004 - 11:04 Joined: Dec 2004 Board Posts: 130---
**Now for this thread, which I have thought LONG and hard about:
I don't know if my opinion matters much, and I don't really know the point of a topic like this except to spark debate but I've seen a gazillion topics like this recently so I wanted to have my say about it. I'll repost a thought that I posted on 10/15/07: You say the Avetts have changed. I ask, changed from What?
They have never been a clearly defined anything. As far as I'm concerned they are sticking to exactly what they meant to do in the first place... make good art. Not just that, make the art they want to make. And for it to be art, that means it will be interpreted in many different ways by many different people... so if you are interpreting it differently... well that is what is supposed to happen...
but as far as better or worse... that is not a fair question. Just an opinion that you can keep to yourself.
I personally don't know you so i dont care what you think of Rembrandt or Renoir... or The Avett Brothers. And the same goes for me, you don't know me, so why would you care?
I think the major point is: If you are someone who enjoys what they are doing now, then enjoy the hell out of it. And if this current album leaves something to be desired but you enjoyed the hell out of Country Was through 4TG, then keep enjoying the hell out of it. But there is ONE thing everyone should be doing no matter what. If you've ever been a fan of the Avett Brothers(Oh What a Nightmare, OR Nemo), you should be proud, you should be rooting for them, and you should continue sending them your good wishes because they've worked damn hard to be where they are.
Ok. I'm done.

Wow, very VERY well said.
agreed. They are obviously making what they love and that's what matters, not how many people approve. Artists/Bands evolve over time anyways, this just shows that they're expanding their horizons. And anyways, I believe that the current album (especially when some songs were sung live) is genuinely coming from them, you can see that they feel the music they play. sorry I'll get off of my soap box.
AMEN! Goodnight everyone and MERRY CHRI-- er, AVETT-mas!
heheh Mahmad, I was obviously on my soapbox when I posted this... so FEEL FREE bro. heheh. HAHAHAHA Merry Avettmas to you too Angishchy.
And btw I am a Renoir fan even though you don't care. Ha.
Mandirae,
It's awesome to see that your post is every bit as relevant today as it was 2 years ago. That was shortly after I joined the boards, and I clearly remember that post. I've been used to the syndrome of people rejecting anything new or different for a while now. Over on the IMDB boards these posts happen for every new episode of every new season of every new tv show EVER. Seriously.
Well said, and I agree 100 percent.
I remember reading that post before (I've been checking this site for years now, just didn't join until recently. Never was big with band boards, ALWAYS a lot of complaining, But The TAB boards are usually different)
Also I enjoy the album, I have listen to it 5 times straight through today alone.
well said and thanks for posting your thoughts...again... please post again when the next album comes out as i'm sure some people will have lost sight of what is really important
This album is shotty! Rick Ruben Ripped the bluegrass out of the Avetts and threw them into pop rock bubblegum. next they will be doing duets w/ taylor swift. PLEASE go back to Dolph. "If it comprimises truth then we will go" start packing again boys cause he ruined this album
Mandirae it's great to hear fromyou. I ran into your sister in Bristol. I told her to tell you I said hello. I miss seeing the old gang at shows. I hope all is well.

@guitarsolo....enjoy listening to all the of the older albums
Well said. I'll admit that I wasn't huge on hearing the slower recorded versions of songs like Kick Drum Heart because I fell in love with it hearing it live, but now that I've listened to it in the context of the album - I've really come to appreciate I&L&Y.
guitarsolo... they aren't/never were really "bluegrass". sorry.
they used whatever instruments they felt was a necessary vehicle to get the song across. that just happened to be banjo and guitar and upright bass.
like someone said earlier, if you don't like it listen to their earlier albums. that's totally your call.
i'm just stickin up for my boys and this INCREDIBLE album they just put out.

-guitarsolo- they have said in many different interviews that they are not bluegrass.. they play what they want and then people try to pigeon hole them into a certain category (bluegrass, pop rock bubblegum...). If you listen to any of their older albums you would see that they have been constantly changing. Now did signing a big record deal make them change their sound? Possibly.. who knows? only them... so it isn't really fair to assume. I for one really like the older albums.. alot, but I also like the newer album partly because it is different.
Mandirae- I am going to friend you on basis of this thread alone! Thank you
After hearing the demos in the deluxe set, I would say that this is the album they would have made regardless. It wouldn't have been as polished without Rick's influence, probably, but only because the Bros didn't know how to do it themselves. The piano is still a big part of the demo, which, was recorded before Rick Rubin had anything to do with anything.
I will be the first to admit that I was skeptical when I heard RR was on board... and I will be the first to admit that this album is a masterpiece.

I saw the moon in the sky, over the city....Oh What A Nightmare.
i love all the older albums very much. they are by far my favorite band but i just don't like this album. i guess hearing some of these songs live has ruined this for me?
Wonderful post, mandirae! I know I am one very proud Avett fan!
well i just made my contribution on the bros. and possibly to starbucks? hehehe. I went and bought it at the local coffee shop and i could not resist, no matter how hard i tried, and no matter how well I have done with this recently, from shouting (in a turrets sort of way) "i opened for these guys a few times" at the baristas. oops.
in response to guitarsolo: you totally missed the point of the post. I'm glad others got what I was tryin to say.
SundayRehab! Good to hear from you buddy! Hope you're doin well!! I'm way out in Colorado now!--

"I saw a man stealin' gold, he said I could do that"
"They said 'never change' so I cut my hair..."
guitarsolo... i'm truly sorry you feel that way. I think it's about as close to perfect as possible. but you are, indeed, entitled to your opinion...

@groove: good reference to the lyrics there on this topic... i'd have to expand to the whole line
They said "I hope that you will never change"
I went and cut my hair
They say "Don't take your business to the big time"
I bought us tickets there
nothin says it better than that. i have to admit I kinda laughed when I heard these lyrics... the guys know EVERYTHING people are saying about them. hehehe.

"I saw a man stealin' gold, he said I could do
To expand further on that :
What did you expect?
And what did you forget?
That to live you must let go of me with each step
It becomes a progression I wont let regret manifest
To agression
Are you to assess what I've been? What I am? Or become?
Did you stop to accept how pathetically dumb
It can be to
Attack those around 'cause you're
True to a color, a town, a time, or a place?
It's not yours, it's not mine
And besides it is gone
And you never will find it again
But I don't want to fight
I just ask let me be
I won't give you the chance to be my enemy
So go home
Think it through
(THINK THINK THINK!)
'Nuff said.
"the guys know EVERYTHING people are saying about them. hehehe."
Exactly. This is their site, after all. Just like if any of us have a website, we know the comments that are left on it. Sure, they get busy and maybe they don't read them all directly but I can't imagine that it doesn't all trickle back their way. After realizing that, I've made a point to temper my comments. This is their house and I want to respect it. I made a post one time that I regretted, looking back on it. It was quickly deleted by the powers-that-be and rightfully so. Going forward, I remind myself that I'm just a guest here and to act accordingly.
I love these guys and I love how in-tune they are with their fans.

reiggin, I too made a comment that I regrettted. I still think about it often and realize words can never truly be taken back. I need to apply that here, and in my everyday life.

I don't care where you're from...you're a part of the family and you're part of the story /Jim Avett
this is just such a great post i wanted to bump it.
Meh.
Go listen to Country Was, I see an almost mirror image of I&L&Y. The guys have never been "bluegrass", they just happen to have the same instruments as a BG trio. Now go listen to Oh What a Nightmare. There it is again. Nothing has changed with I&L&Y, they just have a better paycheck than before. The sound and the words have so many different levels, its like peeling an onion.
When people ask me, "What kind of music are the Avett Brothers?" I compare them more to Pink Floyd than anyone else. That band evolved over time, but never strayed from what they started with. Matter of fact, when I was listening to "Head full of Doubt/Road full of promise" I closed my eyes and could almost hear Roger Waters singing that song. Download a couple songs from "See Emily Play" and then download some songs from "The Final Cut". You will see what Im blathering about, its there. They started with one thing, got to another, but the underlying current was still there.
You can use the same idea with the Beach Boys. Start out with Surfin USA and the end with Pet Sounds. Still the same idea, just more of it. Same with The Beatles. People freaked out about "White Album", but it still had the same underlying current as their first album. Folks were losing their minds over "Rubber Soul", but they still stayed true to their music and art.
