Reviews for this Album
Re: A Carolina Jubilee
This album speaks to the my heart. The last track is so special and adorable, I always smile when I listen to it. To have known the 9 3/4 years old Scott and 5 years old Seth...
Re: A Carolina Jubilee
My favorite CD by far! If you don't own it, you don't know what you're missing!!
Re: A Carolina Jubilee
the album that i have the fewest songs from. currently downloading, listening, and learning
Re: A Carolina Jubilee
Great music! I know I sound like a broken record, but this music is so toe-tapping catchy, witty, heart-felt, touching, and true that I have to sing its praises. Love Like the Movies takes aim at the glamorization of love versus the reality. Really, you can't go wrong with any of the songs on this album. My favorites include: Do You Love Him, Smoke In Our Lights, My Last Song to Jenny, and Offering. I might as well just put them all up here. Love this album.
RE: A Carolina Jubilee
I just ordered this on Friday. Took me forever to find a place that actually sold a physical CD. Very excited to hear it!

Question
Is there a way I can listen to these somewhere, since I do not have the cd yet? Obviously, technologically challenged over here.
Thank you
offering
all the other bands were stepping stones , on a staircase to The Avett Brothers
The Roots Feed The Tree...
A Carolina Jubilee can be considered the dirt underneath the concrete foundation of The Avett Brothers' music. Raw, grinding, unadulterated melodies and lyrics culminate to produce the beginning of this great band. Bluegrass and folk styles certainly shine throughout, which make it a beloved album for any Avett lover.
Some of my personal favorites:
- "My Last Song To Jenny" - This song is a haunting reminder of what a broken heart feels like. Althought he title suggests he has forgot about Jenny, it becomes obvious he hasn't and won't for some time. The thought of her is "heavy on his mind" and he can't sleep a wink. It's almost painful listening to what she has done to his heart.
- "Walking For You" - Between "Walking For You" and "One Line Wonder" there is enough banjo to satisfy even someone who hates the sound of one. This driving folk tune is a great testament to the devotion and loyalty a man has for someone he loves. The line "I got an old (fill in a car company) pick-up truck!" will continue to ring in my ears long after the song is over.
- "Smoke In Our Lights" - This love song presents such honesty and odd, but romantic metaphors that it's nearly impossible to recreate. In the song the girl becomes a town, a red Trans Am, a voice in your head, and a homecoming night. Such symbolism is so off-the-wall that it seems un-relateable, but as with all Avett tunes, it most certainly is.
Carolina Jubilee is the heart-and-soul of the Avett's collection and will be remembered as the introduction (although "The Avett Brothers" and "Country Was") came first. The songs on this album serve as sort of an appetizer to the rest...a really delicious appetizer...
yay
Jubilee indeed!
amazing
Southern Charm
This album made me smile the very first time I listened to it. My first Avett album was Emotionalism, and this one provides a glimpse into their earlier artistic development. It is much more classic country/bluegrass oriented but still very Avett. "Sorry Man" and "Me and God" are standout tracks that do not appear on Live, Vol. 2. "D Bag Rag" also reveals another side of them. This album doesn't quite capture the energy that "Pretty Girl from Raleigh" and "Traveling Song" can have that make them great. I would not recommend this as an intro album to the Avett Bros., but an essential one for any true fan.

But their good times come with prices
And I can't believe it when I hear the jokes they make
At anyone's expese except their own
Would they laugh if they knew who paid?

Home video!!!
When i first heard this i couldnt stop laughing. it reminded me a lot of the old home videos we use to have
The first Avett Brothers album I listened to... Amazing!!!
A friend of mine let me listen to this record and I was blown away. I think I listened to traveling song and I killed Sally's lover a million times! And even after numerous other releases I always come back to this album time and time again. This album is one of the reasons I fell in love with the music of the Avett Brothers.
Re: A Carolina Jubilee
As of lately, it's my favorite album. Though I can't say it's their BEST (that honor, in my opinion, goes to Emotionalism,) this one has an energy and depth to it's songwriting that grows more and more with repeat listens.
Pretty Girl from Annapolis
Great album, love pretty girl from annapolis
Never gets old...
AS many have said before, this album has continuos rotation. Great from beginning to end.
amazing!!!
One of my favorites of theirs. Regret not buying it when I had the chance. Really want it.

But that is not why we came.
And if it compromises truth then we will go.

This first major release by the Bros is a freakin' gem. Can't get enough of it!

Some of my favorite songs
Me and God is great, My Last Song to Jenny breaks my heart, D Bag Rag puts me in a better mood no matter what is going on, and the Offering is just beautiful. Classic Pretty Girls and I Killed Sally's Lover is just fun. The rest are good too!
Temporary is my time, Ain't nothin on this world that's mine, Except the will I found to carry on.
Free is not your right to choose, It's answering what's asked of you, To give the love you find until it's gone.
Sweet Carolina
I played Love Like the Movies for a friend at work, he was 44 at the time and a big Grateful Dead fan ( so lots of drug use, although not a Tommy Chong type ) and he innocently exclaimed," These guys are good, what is it...Avett Brothers?" I guess his age is unnecessary but, it was my second time spreading the word and instantly, they defy and excite the mind of a boomer and shroomer.
"It's my world, you're all just in it."

I Killed Sally's Lover
This song drew me into The Avett Brothers... Very catchy and its a song that gets stuck in your head for days

Bought this:
Right out of the hands of Joe Kwan. Happy to have studio versions of these songs.
So you say you're so in love well baby so am I
Walking for You, The Traveling Song, I Killed Sally's Lover, and D Bag Rag are the best.
Love them Avetts
One of my favorites , how can you beat Pretty Girl From Raleigh and Me and God?
One of my favorites
A good mix of what lies ahead and their older stuff. This will always be one of my favs.
Amazing
I feel like this is one of the most honest records I have heard in a while
Good stuff.
Probably the album I listen to least, but it's still incredible.
The Offering
is one of my all-time favorites from the boys. Wonderful song, wonderful lyrics. I love that Scott says "childern"
We are the music makers and we are the dreamers of dreams.
~Willy Wonka
Cool Start
It was a good start for the boys, but hard to listen to this after hearing some of there later work. Still fun to listen too.
amazing, amazing, amazing
i bought this album the second time i saw the brothers and thought that it would be a step backwards, but i absolutely love it. some songs aren't my favorites, but there are so many others here that have become personal classics.
Will this ever be re-issued?
This album has such great songs on it! Now that the boys are on a major label, I wonder if it will ever be re-issued?
Good Start
You could see the hint of greatness coming out, but the sound wasn't completely theirs yet. They still were holding onto being a bluegrass band and were just letting their own sound coming out. An excellent listen, but the songs have evolved so much since then.

Must Have
This album is still home to their "bluegrass sound" that is the backbone of the Avetts music... since this album, the Avetts have gone in a few different directions, however, still heavily relate to this album... granted they don't play every song on the album - you will still get to hear the two songs from the Pretty Girl series ( pg from Annapolis and Raleigh)....I highly suggest getting this album
Well Locust, Mount Pleasant, Concord.... LETS GOOO!
Good stuff
This is probably a lot different from what new fans are used to. I think this is one of the few albums I can think of that is so bottom heavy with better songs coming at the end.
We are the true believers.
Towards the top...
of my list. I cannot put my finger on my favorite Avett album but this one ranks near the top!
Changing the plans that I’ve been setting on
I’m scared by the way that my life is getting gone
Early Work
I love their early work as much as their latest.
