if it's the beaches was the first song i heard on this album (which i actually do like the phone conversation part); however, i really like a lot of the less heard songs on this album.

Lovely. The Avett Brothers have a knack for capturing a mood with their music. This ep combined with its follow-up = sheer genius. The songs are striking. They seem to get right down to the core of what it is to be human.This album acknowledges our human imperfections while still holding out hope for improvement. When I Drink is a personal favorite along with Backwards with Time, and If It's the Beaches. I love it, and you will too.

They must have called it The Gleam because it shines so bright. LOVE this album. Find My Love and If It's The Beaches are a bittersweet duo that goes right for the K.O. I'm not sure The Avett Brothers can fail.

This is the first album by The Avett Brothers that I heard and this album is how I fell in love with them.

I don't love *every* song on this release, but there are several shining stars. Can I give If It's the beaches 6 stars instead of 5? again, not a fan of the talking in songs (the phone convo in Beaches) but I can get over that for such a wonderfully written song. When I drink is a great song too, and Find my Love. Worth purchasing to get the studio versions of some great songs that show up in live setlists

I love the Avett Brothers and all their albums but this one is by far my favorite. If its the Beaches is musical perfection.
Great EP
"The Gleam" really captures the band at their most somber. The tracks nicely compliment the band's more upbeat work.

Believe Me, I Have A System...
Some might look at the three stars and think "is he crazy? This album is great!" Well, I am not saying it's not a great album. Simply put, every Avett release is great to me, some are great, some are beyond great, some are awe-inspiring, some are other-worldly. The Gleam has a few tracks that are timelessly unforgettable, others seem ordinary for the Avett's. Not that "ordinary Avett" is ordinary on the grand scale, because their "ordinary" is everyone else's genius.
The strongest songs to me are:
- "If It's The Beaches" - This song is an unforgettable one, and probably in my top-ten of favorite Avett tunes. The story of loss is conveyed through the feelings of a man who will literally do anything to prevent it. You're left thinking "well, did she take him up on the deal?" I guess we may never know, although if you listen to "I Would Be Sad" the situation is referenced, but that song is about loss so she probably left.
- "Find My Love" - the line: "love gets lost" is so true and primeval that you sit and think "well, I guess that's right". The song is heartbreaking, but at the end you think there's nothing more you can do but let someone find you love, you can't actively do anything else.
The album is a really great piece of work, but the follow up (Gleam II) takes the concept of the series to a new level. I guess I have to appreciate this one as the pioneer of things to come...and what a foundation it was!

Lovely collection of songs
Yardsale, while not this albums best, let alone that of the whole discography, is still seriously underrated. Just listen to the lyrics.

I went to the MOMA show a couple years ago with very little knowledge of the avetts. I had just been dumped after a 4 year relationship and my brother wanted to get me out of the house. With the heartbreak still so fresh I was a little shaky that night. When they launched into "If tis the beaches" and I heard the words it hit me so hard that I cried for the firast time in as long as I can remember. Even my brother didnt know what to do.He hadnt seen me like that since we were little kids. I completely lost it. No other song has ever affected me so deeply and spoken to me like that one did that night.It will forever hold a special place for me.

Sanguine
Hadn't paid much attention to this album in the past year almost but today remembered just how much this album means to me. The first few lines of Sanguine, the acoustic guitar... it all touches me deeper than any other song I think I've ever heard in my entire life. Find My Love is another that will always stick with me and define a very significant period in my life. I can't believe I let this album go unheard for so long. It's perfect.

i just recently went back and listened to this one a few times... if it's the beaches is still so good, as well as all of the others...
the one that stuck out to me on this go 'round was Find My Love... so poignant and gut wrenching...

The Fullest
Part of getting the most out of your life (which is sort of what I think the Avetts mostly sing about,) is accepting and dealing with the tragedies as well as the high points. Some parts of life suck and it can be a hard, bitter old world, but there can be a beauty in melancholy and the sad and the hard make the joys that much bigger. That's part of what I think is going on in a lot of the songs on this album.
Yard Sale is my least favorite song on the album (though keep in mind that my least favorite Avett song is still far cry above much of the music out there,) but it's grown on me over time. The others are handsdown beautiful. I look forward continued explorations of the Gleam.

A good start
I love the concept of the Gleam series, but I wish this one had a little more polish on it. It seems a bit rushed and the songs just don't stick with you as much as the second gleam. Overall a good record but not my favorite.

My First Love
The first Avett album I bought and dismissed rather quickly, but that didn't last. Upon returning to the album from time to time I found it harder and harder to take out of my cd player, thanks to Sanguine and it was all uphill from there. This little album segued to getting every Avett song available at the time almost as fast as my original dismissal. Every song, every day, I still listen. I once took a cruise on my bike (bicycle not motorcycle- I'm not cool) and had my monster head-phones on, and turned Backwards With Time on the highest volume and felt high, like I just smoked a joint ( I don't smoke weed anymore- no motorcycle, no weed, not cool).
