Reviews for this Album

The May 2010 Esquire magazine music feature identifies Murder in the City as one of four "Perfect" songs. I agreee whole heartedly. I have attended Avett Brothers concerts with all three of my sons and two of my brothers, and this song is always very special to hear when I am with family.

Play it at Edgefield please!

Esquire Magazine called "Murder in the City" a perfect song in their April 2010 issue. I agree, and hope they play it this summer. I was standing next to my oldest son at the Crystal Ballroom when they played it and it brought me to tears.

This song stays in my head all the time! i am always singing either it, or Laundry Room, off of I and Love and You, and it is at a point where my entire family knows the songs. This EP is phenomenal. Cant Wait to see them in SEptember!

Something about this album makes me feel like home is the only place I want to be, like my house is my haven. It's comfort and fondness. My small famiyl bought our first small house one year ago, and the second color to go on the walls was a yellow mirroring the yellow that graces the cover of The Second Gleam. It's just two walls and a doorway, but something about the yellow hallway brings me back to the words and emotions that I feel deep, deep in my soul when I listen to these songs. So, I am happy to say that I am the proud our of The Second Gleam (EP) and The Second Gleam themed hallway.

The Gleam series might go down as a legendary songwriting collection years in the future. I think the premise for both albums so far, has been to create almost a microcosm of what The Avett Brothers are trying to do with their music. They strip everything down, leaving two guitars and words. That's what it's always been about, words. In listening to this album no words were ever sung so heartfelt and clear. The passion not just for their music, but for their music as poetry is represented so well in The Gleam II.

The strongest songs are, in my opinion:

- "Murder In The City" - I have a hard time believing anyone could disagree with this as the strongest on the album and maybe the strongest tune, lyric-wise, of their entire repetoir. It's so painful to hear about the confusing relationship of a family, but so refreshing to hear the words "there was nothing worth sharing like the love that let us share our name". It really makes you appreciate your family, no matter what kind of relationship you have with them.

- "Black, Blue" - Love has never been described so eloquently. The thought that love is not all joy, is a frequent theme of any musician, but the Avetts seem to "get it" in this song.

- "Bella Donna" - This song has my favorite melody of any Avett Song and while the theme is pretty broad, the music is infectious.

This album is really appreciated by dedicated fans of the Avetts because they don't see it as whining, tedious love album, The casual listener might not enjoy the overall style, but my wish is that everyone does. One thing is for sure, if you've ever felt love in any capacity, you will connect with this one...

I just heard this band last night for the first time on ACL, 1/23/10. "Murder In the City" is incredible. I just cry through the whole song. Sheer, raw heartbreak; pure love.

I can't believe the Emotion on this album. Great stuff.

Black and Blue is one of my favorite TAB songs. It's beautiful!!!!! That song alone is worth buying this ep, but they are all good.

Two years ago when I was first introduced to the Avett Brothers while in the Peace Corps I played the Murder in the City video over and over whenever I had the internet. It's words struck a chord in me about being good enough compared to siblings and the love within a family. I have been a fan of the Avett Brothers ever since. If I could write songs about my sister and I, I imagine they'd sound a lot like this.

At anyone's expese except their own

This was the first Avett Brothers I ever heard. I was driving home one day, and Tear Down The House came on the radio (local NPR station). I loved it so much, when I got home, I stayed in the car to find out who it was by.

I then went right to the computer and bought The Gleam, The Gleam II, and Emotionalism.

This album (and Tear Down the House) will always have a special place in my heart because of that.

I don't have this one on my CD either!!! What a rip off

This is a good song, but better live than on the CD in my opinion!

This was my first exposure to the Avetts and I immediately knew that I had come upon something amazing. My sister who was in the army had bought this record and a record player for her boyfriend but when they broke up she sent it home to my brother where him and I immediately became huge fans. We have never looked back and have come to know and love every single song on all of the brothers albums.--

I vividly remember the very first time I heard murder in the city. It was before I'd gotten the gleam II, I don't think the album had been released. My best friend Kat and I went to an amazing outdoor venue in Cary, NC called Koka Beach. She, a 28 year old well traveled woman had never been to a live music show. When she told me this ridiculous fact I insisted that the Avett's be her first. The show was sold out and i think the band was as excited and surprised about as i was. She had the best time and was instantly hooked(she and i attended the halloween show a few months later at war memorial in the boro). One moment that stands out about the Koka show was when they performed murder in the city. She is very close with her brother and instantly shared the song with him. We totally rushed down to the stage and got into the middle of everything for the pretty girl finale. It was a truly amazing night. I hope for many more.

love Murder in the City

It's grown on me tremendously. Also, I have to admit, I'm posting this because I want a new bird. Pretty lame, I reckon.

This is the first Avett Brothers album I heard and instantly fell in love with it. The first song I ever heard was Murder in the City, which is probably my favorite on the album....but after I heard St. Joseph's in the gondola, I am hoping I can hear them perform it like that at a concert in the future....that would just be great

Fire laser pants at will!

Fire laser pants at will!

I have heard that the gleam cds are songs that just dont fit the flow of whatever album they are working on at the time. This is dissapointing to me because the gleam 1 & 2 are some of my favorite songs and cant complain because they were still released. But I think some of those songs would fit easily on other albums. But as long as you keep em comin I'll keep buyin. Havent let me down once.

I wanna have friends. That I can trust. That love me for the man I've become not the man that I was.

Just gorgeous. I love this EP. Bella Donna takes the cake for me. Of course Murder in the City is great, but BD is just so mellow and flowing. St Joseph's is great too.

It's not the chase that I love - it's me following you.

this is the only album that i've never been able to describe how it has made me feel. i can listen to it over and over like much of the avett's stuff but this album does it.
