Thanks for sharing this track with us..."I and Love and You” and seriously I liked all the tracks but especially "Laundry Room" and "Kick Drum Heart"....Teeth Whitening Teeth Whitening Natural Teeth Whitening

At one point, someone had some fantastic photos uploaded from this killer killer show. They were black and white and the laptop I downloaded them too has crashed and burned. Anyone still have them? Would greatly appreciate!

Yes, I agree with your insight that the Avetts are a-changing. I love the lyrics to Laundry Room and I&Love&You. All 3 songs are brilliant. I expect TAB to be regarded up there with Lennon & McCartney for their song writing. The uniqueness of TAB style and the vocal and instrumental talent is so timeless, yet very trendy. I can't force myself to listen to any other group!

Now, I have to be honest, because I believe TAB portray such honesty in their music... The three new songs (in my opinion, of course) are a little too 'produced.' While I appreciate the perfection of the recording, I wonder how much their voices were altered and digitized. I don't hear the same spontaneous energy and raw honesty, it all seems too controlled.

Just in case TAB actually read these posts:
Please boys, don't get caught up in the "Glistening Shine." Go back to your roots and flourish in your own genius, and don't get caught up in the American music corporate world... Too much marketing and tweeking to appeal to everyone on the planet makes your sound too generic. Listen to me, I'm old enough to be all of your mothers!

'If it compromises truth then we will go", are these just words to fill in the blanks of the song?

Love you guys

Nothing's gained excusing the awful arrangement of these songs. The Brothers have made perfectly great music inside and outside the studio long before they signed with a major label. For that matter plenty of bands have signed with major labels without compromising their sound and artistic integrity.

And, yes, for the thousandth time-- we can all appreciate the difference between a live performance and the produced sound of a studio album.

But contrast the live version of "Laundry Room" the Brothers played for NPR's Small Desk Concert series with the EP cut.

The difference you'll hear is not live versus studio, small label versus big corporation...what you're hearing live is simply better music---brilliant lyrics delivered with solid vocal performances set to the infectious chords of four very talented musicians.

There's no excusing the EP version: it's not a new sound, or a studio sound-- it's just really bad music.

I'm new to the board, but I'm also still feeling fresh after the show at The National last night in Richmond. I'm tired of reading posts about how "betrayed" people feel. It was obvious, extremely obvious, to me last night that The Avett Brothers are one of a handful of bands I've come across that remain completely dedicated to their fans. Frankly, I've never seen a group connect with an audience as quickly and maintain that bond for 2+ hours. Not to mention taking the time to shake hands after the show.

True, I don't have a decade long obsession with the Avetts, but I've certainly been a huge fan since stumbling across their music not too long ago. Each and every one of us is lucky to have whatever relationship with have with The Avett Brothers and their music. Quit whining and support the band you're passionate enough about to write posts on their discussion boards at 3:30am. You love this band. You'll find songs on I&love&you that you can't live without. Turn your frown upside down and go buy tickets to the next show within 6 hours of you. I promise they won't let you down.

And for those of you who seem the least willing to accept any kind of change, I have three words about last night that will likely infuriate you...

Crawford played trumpet.

And it was raw, and he looked nervous, and it was amazing. And, you know what? Scott, and Seth and Joe were beaming with pride about not only his performance, but also about presenting a brand new song to an appreciative audience. And I was moved.

Mr. Sideshow, well said and I couldn't agree more.
I love these new studio tracks. They are infectious and obviously still rock live, as only live can. I am so happy for you guys and your impending huge success. Looking so forward to the rest of the album.

I hear what some of you are saying. When "I and Love and You" was first released as a single, I was a little worried. For the first song off of their new album, I just didn't think it was all that special. However, it's slowly been growing on me (much like 'Shame' did, which was the first song that eased my country-opposed ear into the extreme talent these guys have). Now these further two songs have been released and after hearing the iTunes preview of "Kick Drum Heart", I was worried. Rick Rubin has watered the boys down, it sounds too clean, where's the *$#@ing banjo?! This was all before downloading the tracks, mind you.

Now that I have, I stand corrected. Hearing the tracks flowing together gives me a much better idea of what they are aiming for with this record and I actually think that this EP is a very savvy selection of three songs to release. You have to remember, people, this is their major label debut. They want to bring in new fans here and these are the perfect songs to ease newcomers into their sound.

I have no doubt that the full album will include plenty of songs with the upbeat newgrass/grungegrass/neo-folk sound we all fell in love with. After all, for every slick and sentimental "Ballad of Love and Hate" or "All My Mistakes", there was a rocking "Will You Return" or "Pretty Girl from San Diego". And lest we all forget the decidedly slick and non-rocking sound of "Second Gleam", which, and I may be alone here, didn't exactly suffer from the punk sound's absence.

These are versatile musicians, guys. They can do it all. Look at Four Thieves Gone. My God, the musical range from "Talk on Indolence" to "Famous Flower of Manhattan" is nuts! This is their major label debut and they have no intention of blowing it, either for the new fans or the old fans. The new album is going to knock our socks off and I'm certain hearing all of the songs in order as the boys intended will assuage any worries the rest of you fairweather fans have about the band "selling out."

Let's try being happy for them. They earned that slick sound and the opportunity to work with someone like RIck Rubin. I can guarantee they don't regret it. That's why they got into this industry, to learn new things, try new things and ultimately to share their artistry with as many people as possible. The change is welcome because it proves that they are maturing as artists. Also, and this is obvious, the old music ain't going anywhere. They've already given that to us and we loved it, sang it, jammed with it and can continue to do so as long as we see fit. Let's all chill out and see what they give us next.

To paraphrase a quote from this site, "If we aren't continuing to grow, what's the point?"

Ugh

The beauty of The Avett Bro's is in their raw energy, grit, and thrashing sound. The new EP falls short on all accounts.

Can't wait for the rest of the album. Thank you for giving us a taste!!

Because many of us already "own" these songs in a way: TAB have been playing these songs live for what already seems like forever and thus it's really easy to be disappointed by cleaner, studio-prepped, album-ready tracks. And while i'm also sure these songs could be better, at the same, i really like what i'm hearing. Besides, it's in concert that their sound really comes, well, a-live!

It's like their albums are mere templates for what follows. (Or, perhaps, they are evolutionary reassessments of what has come before, where they are now with a particular song (or group of songs), and where else they might go.) In this way, any album is but one perspective on the artwork that is TAB; it must needs be seen along with the live shows, videos, etc. to be wholly appreciated.

I'm waxing a bit too poetical, i suppose, but if these tracks were really, i dunno, perfect, where would either TAB or we (the audience) have to go? It's the musical journey that thrills me. And these tracks are a delightful pitstop along the way.

These songs are very polished and sound great. I think some fans might be dissapointed because the sound the Avetts produce in live shows is so powerful. If the new album sounded more like the live shows, then many would complain that the production was too raw. "You can't make everybody happy all of the time" (Paranoia in B Major). I think an excellent follow up to "I and Love and You" would be a new live CD/DVD! Come on Seth, Scott, and Bobby! How 'bout it?!

I still am pretty upset about the new EP, but reading everyone's comments--the negative and positive--really have been a help.

On the one hand, I feel incredibly betrayed by this small--and hopefully not too telling--batch of songs. I mean, prior to this release, the band kept saying the number of fans they have and the money and the fame just didn't matter to them, and I believed that because I love the Avett Brothers so much and I thought I knew what they were about. I was worried, of course, but I took solace in their insistences that the new album would simply be an evolution of the things we all love about their music; they seemed confident and proud of the record and maybe they like this new, polished, one-step-away-from-radio-pop sound (though I doubt it...). The truth is, though, when I heard these new songs, it felt plain like I was losing my favorite band. The new hype is one thing--seeing them listed on itunes homepage as "what's hot"--but the idea of new legions of fans springing up with this EP as their only knowledge of the Avett's music suddenly became too much to handle.

Reading what Iwhofollowthegleam had to say, however, I feel somewhat better:

"To dislike these tracks is fine. Shouldn't have to say this, but people seem to be feeling sensitive (buncha softies we Avett fans are): you can still be a huge fan and dislike these current offerings."

This is very true, and I HAD almost forgotten. Springsteen, my other favorite musician, has a number of albums I don't like, but he always redeems himself and he's always awesome live, even now at whatever age he is, all energy and commitment. I guess I just got used to liking everything the Avetts did, and hearing songs I had already grown the love so much (especially LR), initially broke my heart. Now, I'm willing to deal with the fact the new album will be a dissapointment, but as it's only my first in a long line of life changing offerings, I can deal. My only hope is that the brothers are moving on from music like this, if only to get back to basics and put the spirit back in their recordings.

My anticipation and high expectations for "Laundry Room" were almost met. My ONLY gripe with the entire EP is the last 30 seconds of LR...I understand it's a studio album and has to be polished up blah blah blah...BUT, it could have been a lil' more rowdy. The ending, I mean. However, I am not disappointed, by any stretch of the imagination.

***ScreamiN' my luNgs out with NothiN' to say***

First I love what you guys talked about in one of the earlier interviews regarding people blasting the music of others. It was right on. However, at the same time there is such a thing as accountability.

That said:

The Appalachian Mountains are beautiful, and if one was to present a truly great painting of them it should highlight their individuality and not attempt to make them appear like every other mountain range or even more popular scenery. Good music production should follow the same principles. It should bring out what is special about the artists and the song. The Avett Brothers are something independent of the fad music coming out of the pacific northwest right now and, in my opinion, much better and far more real. Rick Rubin attempting to force them into this genre is disappointing. Canadian emo pop is awful, and while this is nowhere that level it also fails to capture the beauty of the greatest band in America. I'm all for growth, production, and evolution. Thank God the Beatles made Rubber Soul and Sgt. Peppers. However those albums were something altogether new and daring. They weren't forcing themselves into what was popular. I expected the major label debut to be a tour de force of what the Avett Brothers were. An explosion of their new sound. Power and real sincerity in the same package. A no holds barred kick in the face to crap 80's rework that is so popular today. The sincerity is there, but the power is missing. The edge is dull. This is a step backward to me. It's like some exec wanted to get in on the PAC northwest hype train and thought he'd make a PAC-northwest album with these boys. If not backward, it's a wrong turn.

I'll buy it. I'll go the show because this is remedied live. But a big part of me wants the Avett Brothers to look into the mirror and really wonder if this is what they intended their "coming out" to look like. If there is any doubt, I'd like to see these songs go back to the studio in order to paint a portrait of this wonderful band that captures what unique visionaries they are.

From the sound of the new cuts, the pace of the live shows should pick up considerably......

Bummer......

Releasing anything exclusively through iTunes is bad enough, but 2 of my very favorite new songs have been totally and completely ruined.

Shame on you, Rick Rubin.

And shame on the avetts for letting their perfect songs be mutilated and offered up like this.

Awful, awful, awful.

Laundry Room has been an inspiration for me, and that's the track I've been screaming about to anyone and everyone that will listen for over a year now. This version is garbage. It's like they took everything good about that song (other than the lyrics) and just tossed it out the window. No passion. No intensity. No emotional charge. Just hollow and cheesy vocal mixes and terribly unnecessary instrumentation.

The title track is tollerable at best, but don't even get me started on the botch job they did on kick drum heart.

Terrible.

"...they are more self-aware and stronger than that"

Beautifully written, man... Couldn't agree more with your post!

Free - verb - to give the love you find until its gone

!!!

ahhh!!!! i cannot even wait! and special deluxe package?! this is spectacular! thanks, guys!!!

This is great, everyone [ Avett fans] is happy for the most part and I understand if someone has a problem with the EP, I also understand people defending the songs, but then again the people who are saying the songs are better live have a point too, however, those talking about progression in the sound seem reasonable, not to mention the fans who would love it regardless and some people think it's Rick Rubin's fault, while others find him to be a good producer and a good fit for the guys.

It's interesting to see people's comments, I love it. When I first heard the sound of "Kick Drum Heart" on the EP, I couldn't get the smile off my face, I started laughing and got chills on chills. The weight of hearing it on a piano and not the keyboard gives it such an added buoyancy that isn't there live. Seth still lets loose with his vocals, Scott kills his verse and the "bells and whistles" don't seem like studio overkill but well at home. This was the song I thought would remain similar to the live version, but it blew by me so fast when I heard it due to the added enjoyment of the variation.

"Laundry Room" is what it is live and otherwise, I didn't know how they would handle it on the album. I'd say it would belong in the Gleam series but the instrumentation that carries it lifts it out of that (not knocking the Gleams). Also, the way that they can sell a song about a boy and a girl, and not say one corny thing the entire time amazes me. After I hear "breathing time-machine", I think that I could have thought of that and relate instantly to that feeling ( I was drunk one night and put on a cd as I went to bed and it was like walking through deja vu without thinking I've done this before but I can be in the period of time when I listened to this ).

One more thing, on my way back from the Minnesota show, every time a bird flew by I'd whisper "Avett", it's fun. Plus, if you're with friends and fans and a flock goes over it would sound crazy as hell to surrounding people who aren't fans.

Pass the Avett.

PLEASE tell me you're kidding... You can't get the new EP on the Canadian version on iTunes?? C'mon guys... show some love to your fans north of the border.

the band would let Rick make them do something they didn't want to do? Why wouldn't we assume this sound is exactly what they want out of the studio track? Do you really think the Avetts are going to "forget who they are as musicians?"

It's fine not to care for the tracks, your taste is your taste, but be careful not to assume what you see as "the soul" of the band's music or "who they are" isn't just your own musical "soul" substituted in for theirs. They've gone this direction because they wanted to, to assume otherwise is to disbelieve that "if it compromises truth" then they will go. And if we don't trust them then when they say that, why trust any of their words? and if we don't trust the sincerity of their words, then why bother with them at all? Their words and their honesty are exactly what draw so many of us to them (combined with their rockin', beautiful tunes, of course.)

Again- to dislike these tracks is fine. Shouldn't have to say this, but people seem to be feeling sensitive (buncha softies we Avett fans are Smiling ): you can still be a huge fan and dislike these current offerings. There are plenty of bands I like that have songs or even whole albums I don't care for. Hasn't happened yet with the Avetts, but I can acknowledge it's possible (if unlikely.)

But to assume it's because the band has lost their way or because it was forced upon them- well, that's just delusion or arrogance on the highest order. It's thinking you know them better than they know themselves or that even they are helpless in the face of the Music Industry (aka Mammon.) I submit that they are more self-aware and stronger than that. Just my opinion.

Temporary is my time, Ain't nothin on this world that's mine, Except the will I found to carry on.
Free is not your right to choose, It's answering what's asked of you, To give the love you find until it's gone.

I don't know how good this analogy is, since I'm not 80 years old and wasn't around then, but is this gonna be like the "Dylan goes electric" complaints from last century?

Progress is good! New things are better! We must go forwards, not backwards; upwards, not forwards; and always twirling, twirling, twirling towards freedom!

I'm not terribly familiar with the live versions of the last 2 songs, but I like 'em. It's a markedly different, more produced sound, but they're still good songs. (Even if the opening to Kick Drum Heart sounds like a MIDI.)

---to those who find this EP offputting...

Don't think Rick controlled TAB and changed them.
TAB is who they are no matter what. They are the most damn honest band. Ever.

Just wanted to share this...
If you guys think these songs are different from previous...
That's the magic and genius of TAB.
They let their songs be what they are.
The songs can be played and executed in any version and still keep the essence of TAB.

But of course LIVE is always the way to go!
Just like if you go to one live show and to another or one youtube video to another, the songs aren't played exactly the same way.
Seth could come in an echo over there
Scott could give a shout over here where there wasn't
Or there could be a slight lyric change.
But no matter how you hear it...
It's indescribable.

But yes I noticed the difference in these songs but love them regardless.

So keep being excited for the next album!!!!

I agree with everything you said Maestro, but I want to add that I am so glad I dont live in Canada. Roanoke is right around the corner!

This will hold me over until the full release. We will see you boys in Tuscaloosa!

You silly Negative Nancies...this EP is great. There's nothing wrong with their sound getting "polished" - they are bursting out into the "big times", as it were, and they have realized that as professional musicians they have to tighten up their instrumentals and vocals. If you miss their raw sounds, go see them live - and I'm sure in the near future they will release another live album. So don't fret; love this album for what it is. I love this EP - Thanks for releasing it early, guys! September can't come soon enough! Laughing out loud

p.s. the fiddle in Laundry Room is incredible!

It's not the chase that I love - it's me following you.

I love me some Laundry Room.

I have to say, I kind of agree with the poster above me. I cannot believe how the EP sounds. I mean I love (love, love) the Avett Brothers, but the tracks sound super-UNAvett Brotherish. Maybe I am just used to the raw passion and inhibition of the live tracks, but as of now, I am sorely dissapointed! I hope the Avetts don't forget who they are as musicians!! I still love them, of course, but I don't want there amazing sound to become too tailored and polished! Sad

I absolutely love the Avett Brothers and all of their previous albums. However, I am a bit worried now for the new album in September. I listend to the new EP and to be 100% honest, I do not like it at all. All of the tracks that are on the EP are fantastic live but not so much on the actual album. Rick Rubin took Avetts original raw sound and jazzed it up which in my opinion completely takes away who the Avett Brothers are. A true disappointment indeed. I really hate to be negative but I am not so sure working with Rick was the right choice. Oh well. You guys are still unreal and amazing and one of the best bands to see live. Hope to see you on the road again soon.

...very much enjoyed, thanks for putting it out like this early.

this sounds promising

is anyone else having issues with iTunes? I get an error message saying the requested resource could not be found.... AARGH!

just wanted to let you guys know that I have been a fan for a long time. Traveled from Ontario Canada to Charlotte to see you guys on New Years, down to Bonnaroo last year to see you and have ALL your albums, including Country Was...
I just tried to download from Itunes your new I and Love and You ep (which I've been excited about since I heard Laundry Room on Youtube for the First time) But Itunes will NOT let me buy it... because I live North of the Border.
Can you release it on Canadian Itunes aswell so all of your Canadian fans can enjoy this CD too!!!

Thanks guys

I found this lastnight, randomly looking on iTunes and was way surprised...Didn't know if it was for real or not. Well now I know!!!! Curious to see what everyone thinks. After hearing these songs live a few times, I was very surprised to hear the significant difference in the sound, instrumental configuration, and use of their voices. At first I was very thrown off, but it's gradually growing on me with each listen....

Is it offered DRM-free at least? Cuz if not, boo. But if so... well, boo still. I prefer Amazon mp3s.

Thanks for sharing early! You know we all live for getting our Avett Fix!
