Today's giveaway is the bug jar from the Slight Figure of Speech Video! Tell us your favorite summer pastime below and you may be chosen to win the bug jar!
my great aunt owns a house on lake michigan in a really small town (about five hours from where i live now). it's about an hour outside of chicago, but her house is in a really small town, so it's a nice balance and city and nature. it's absolutely beautiful. my favorite thing to do is travel, and the lake house/lake are my favorite places to be.
nothing better than kicking back on the bench with a cold Sierra Nevada and watching the kids run through the sprinkler...what a fine atlanta pass time
you can buy the fanciest toys, clothes and promises of trips to chuckee cheeze...but what truly brings delight to a six yr olds heart is a glow in the dark bug jar.
i would give it to my pride and joy....my meaning to life...and my encouragement on a gloomy day...Riley. Kids are the most rewarding thing we can have in life...
The best thing about this past summer was learning to play the banjo and pretending I was like Scott. My best friend plays guitar, she of course, was Seth, and we learned as many Avett songs as we could . I introduced her to the Avetts this year, and they have increasingly defined our lives. At least for 2009. I attribute all my banjo skills to their songs because those were the ones I started with. My fondest memory of this summer was my friend and I playing SSS and Die die die in the parking lot at the mall one July day just enjoying life.
It is hard not to enjoy life while listening to Avett music.
playing ultimate frisbee in summer leagues that have you playing til dark and then hanging out with good folk and drinking beers til the mosquitoes get too awful to bear.
A definite highlight of my summer was going to my first Avett Brothers concert! As a longtime lover of the brothers, I was stoked to go to the concert with my two best girlfriends. We fixed our hair, put on our make up, dressed to impress, and studied & memorized almost all of the songs (which wasn't hard because they are always on repeat, we knew half of them anyways, and the lyrics are amazingly addictive)..and then we went to the show! It was extraordinary! Although we wished we could've jump up on stage with the band, the night was more then we could ask for. We sang our hearts out, danced with the music, and then partied like rock stars until 6 a.m. We were happy to be enjoying music, love, and friendship. It's the simply things in life that truly matter! Oh, how i miss those summer nights with the Avett Brothers that made me feel so alive!
...might be seeing avett shows! i saw them in pittsburgh this summer and in new york since then, and again in february...and as long as they're playing within a couple hundred miles i'll keep going...
The past few summers have been spent loading up the car and heading out of Orlando and just driving up the east coast until we find a spot worth stopping. Windows down, music loud, and a fresh pack of smokes always makes for a good drive.
I would have to say that the thing I love to do most in the summer is grabbing the guitars and the banjo, a couple cases of beer, a jar of moonshine, and sitting around the fire in the back yard with my friends and family.
This past summer a little fox visited our yard almost every night and I would sit on the swing in the front yard watching and waiting for it. Around dusk there it would be, somethimes coming very close to where I sat. Only problem was that in Georgia the mosquitos were also out that time of evening. But fighting off the bugs was well worth the love I had for that little wild fox!
Throwing hedgeapples at the big tree in my best friends country home. I have been doing it for years. A few years ago he bought a german shepherd named Odin and he is now joins in the fun and will chase them from dusk till dawn. It is always a summer tradition of mine.
i like the cat on the box, in my summers i collect cats and let them stay at my house, then give them cat food and cat water so they can survive. so if i had this awesome bug jar i could fill it up with bugs so my cats can be super entertained while staying in my house.
With this fantastic bug jar I will be able to think of you guys during my favorite summer pastime - collecting bugs! Coleopterans, hemipterans, and dipterans..oh my!
I am currently saving up for graduate school, with the intention of studying entomology... This jar will make me the envy of all my entomologist friends. I would go out and buy it myself, but I spent my last $57 on tickets to your NYE show here in Asheville! Can't wait to see you guys next week!
Great topic! My favorite Summer pasttime is going to as many shows I can! NC is a great place to be in the Summer and there are tons of places to catch great shows. I love taking my 8 year old daughter and 9 year old niece with me as well!
Oh man, I can't pick just one--how about 3?
--Reading and then napping in the sun in the backyard
--Counting my bug bites--mosquitoes, unfortunately, love me.
--Going to the beach with my extended family and walking all the way to the pier after dinner.
I have 8 brothers and sister and every summer when I was a kid we would all cramp into the family van and drive a few hours down to the lake. Such great memories...oh how I miss these days.
Favorite summer time would have to be hanging out with summer campers at the camp I work at jamming out to some brothers in the cabin singing at the top of our lungs... Letting everyone else know what is up!
And of course going to some shows and hanging out on the lake!

Summer time is when you make it to the North West to feed my growing addiction! Yeah! Also, Pickathon will bring new music as well. Music, music, music. Summer time fun.

The best moments of summertime are when its just you and your buds, grillin out by the lake, drinking gallons of sweet tea, fishing, and just belting out songs all day. Doesn't get much better than that.
Ok so my roommates and I have a hard enough time keeping up with studies that we are wasting so much time getting the bugs out of our house. So now we just want to keep them. THIS IS PERFECT!!!
MY FAVORITE SUMMER PASTTIME IS SITTING ON MY DECK WITH MY GOOD FRIENDS WHILE WE ALL PLAY OUR LATEST NEW DICOVERY IN MUSIC! THE AVETTS WERE MINE WITH ALOT OF HELP FROM WXPN IN PHILLY WHICH HELPED ME TO FIND OUT ABOUT YOUR BAND(THANK GOD FOR XPN). BUT IT WOULD REALLY BE NICE TO HAVE THAT BOX SET, SO THAT I COULD DISCOVER MORE ABOUT YOU GUYS!!! HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO EVERYONE IN AVETTLAND.
Every summer I've gone camping with my dad on a great road trip. Every one is always amazing. Been all over this country on wheels. Each one has included some time through Colorado and New Mexico.
Bug catching would be super awesome to start doing on those trips! No better way to do it than with the "Slight Figure of Speech" bug jar.
My favourite memory took place on a two week hiking trip to Arizona, Utah, Nevada, and New Mexico. Throughout the whole trip we stayed at National Parks and other campgrounds. After climbing Angels Landing at Zion National Park we needed some rest but refused to put up any tents. The sky is so open, and clear out west it's impossible to resist the temptation of sleeping under the stars. I've never seen so many shooting stars nor felt so important and insignificant at the same time.
Shortly after Mignonette came out I picked up a copy before I went to the beach. I don't think I have ever heard a song played as many times as me and the guys listened to "At the Beach" that trip. 5 days, 5 guys, a few cases of beer and the Avetts made that trip one of the best experiences of my life.
