Wow! My husband and I are hooked - !

Please, please get over to NY (Long Island is best, ok, we'll get to Manhattan). Checked your tour dates - Ithaca is TOO far away!!!

Can't travel far bc of kids, work . . .

And jeez, too many complainers about show venue, etc for New Year's Eve - give them a break! At least you'll get to see them!

Back in my day we listened to rock-n-roll music and if the sound is bad at the civic center it's only because bands like KISS and Van Halen (touring in support of VH1-tickets $7) and Blue Oyster Cult (sorry can't figure out the requisite metal umlaut)
blew out the speakers. Let's quit whining, put on our big-girl panties and RAWK!

im totally skipping my first and second period tomorow to buy these tickets. i hope it pays off!!!!

Quit yer b****in'. I bet the TAB get tired of trying to satisfy everyone. THE FANS ARE GETTING SELFISH AND STARTING TO SUCK!!!!. Wouldn't much blame them if they pulled the plug and said "screw it, we'll just cancel and go party on NYE ourselves...here's your refund". Shut up, be happy that they are even playing for your enjoyment! "THE FANS" are gonna suck the love of music right out of them. Rock on Avetts! Wish I could come!!!!

Despite having looked at this announcement countless times, I keep reading it as NYC too. I'm glad I'm not the only one who can't read/has very wishful vision, evidently.

OK all of my friends on both sides airing your thoughts. The negativity has taken me aback, but then again, I respect your right to express them.

My final two cents on the whole "hub-hub". Look, its fricking NYE! Do you actually expect to go to a great acoustically sound arena and LISTEN? Oh, come on, now. This is a chance to party with the best damn band in the land. It's a time to yell, scream, chant, body surf and let all of this past year's hell and glory come to a resounding end with the Brothers. Hell, I can't think of a better way to ring in the year. If I can't hear the purity as before, so what? I mean, I will be in the same room as The Avetts. I don't give a damn if all I hear is reverb and feedback.

I truly don't think this has anything to do with money. I think it's just a way to get as many fans into one venue to count down and celebrate one tremendous year for The Avetts. If I want quality, I'll pop in a CD or listen to my MP3 player.

Take care my fellow Avett Addicts. If you decide not to attend, I'll still support your decision.

I have to say I am torn…on one hand I am sad about the after-the-fact venue change, but I am happy for the boys that they are getting that big and have such a high demand for tickets…
I love TAB, always will. I don’t think that the boys are greedy in any way. I think they are very pure, good people, who truly care about their fans. I do however feel that major record labels can be greedy regardless of what the performer(s) really wants, but that’s a discussion for another time.
I think that it is only fair they offer us the choice of a refund if we bought tickets for Thomas Wolfe. I have gone to many TAB shows and will again in the future, but these tickets where fairly pricy for me. I paid it because of the venue, experience, and the band. If this show had been planned for the Civic center originally, I don’t think the tickets would have been as expensive. And if they were, I don’t think I would be attending.
Now, even if they offer a refund, I won’t accept it. I will still go to the show because I already have my non-refundable plane ticket back to NC booked, hotel, as well as my ride back home to Wilmington. But I would just like them to offer it as a sign of good will towards their fans, for all of us that sat online fighting with the crappy presale problems and then again that Friday with slow Ticketmaster. Also, if they do offer a refund then there is no longer any reason for people to be angry about this change.

I am very happy for all the fans that were unable to get tickets before and now have a chance to attend. But at least they know what they are paying for ahead of time.
Like I said, I am torn…See ya on NYE! :-/

"For those who bought tickets to Wolfe - who wouldn't have bought them at the Civic Center - they should be entitled to a refund due to the change"

Agreed, how do I get a full refund for the 4 tickets we purchased (ticketbastard charges and all)?

I just needed to come here are reiterate my happiness on the change of venue and the ability to accomodate more folks. For those with tickets who are bummed at the change - I do understand feeling slighted - but the experience will be what you make of it. I get the better acoustics in the smaller venue too - but this is the Avetts - they are going to sound good playing anywhere. For those who bought tickets to Wolfe - who wouldn't have bought them at the Civic Center - they should be entitled to a refund due to the change - but otherwise, just go -enjoy - and ring in the new year with the best band playing.

I've seen this band in various venues - big, small, outdoor, indoor - and they are great anywhere they play. What's done is done - and now many more people will get the chance to experience a new year with this great band. I am appreciative and very thankful.

we were hoping to see the avetts in a small venue where we could get so close we can see them sweat.........if that means we have to get there three hours early to do it we will cause they're worth it!

Our words are like our mirrors...... If you think the A Bros are greedy, check into your own greed. If you think the venue is larger because the A Bros care about us, look at your own ability to love. Our words tell us who we are.

Changing the venue after the fact reflects poorly on the band, regardless of their motivation for doing so. This seems especially true since the new venue is such a huge step down in terms of intimacy and sound quality.

that they do something special for those who got tix to the Thomas Wolfe show.

For saying that.

I'm bummed but only because I'm semi-dyslexic and read "New NYE show" as "New NYC show" and assumed they were having another show in the City! So yeah, I'm bummed but that was totally my fault.

As for the debate, those presales are always way hard to time. I know I'm always ready for them and still never get tickets and I personally despise scalpers so I would have been in the same boat as many. Yeah, the sound might be worse but it's the AVETTS. On NEW YEARS EVE. That's f***ing awesome! Sorry if that's not what you wanted to hear but I frankly don't really sympathize for the anger except for those who did pay for scalped tickets way more than they would have by waiting. That I see. Sorry.

So yeah, I'm with Sunny from Boston. What's done is done. Don't let it get you down and get ready to have an AWESOME new year's eve while I have to sit here and watch some lame-o person drop a large ball on a building. EPIC WIN for you guys.

Everyone just needs to simmer down!!! I bought tix to Thomas Wolfe, anticipated, somehow got great tix, and was excited....I am still excited! Im still going to go and enjoy an awesome New Years Eve concert. Yall are boo hooing and its crazy! NYE is going to rock no matter where we get to see TAB. I can't wait! how can you not look forward to this event?

I think a lot of people are missing the point here. Although there is plenty of debating to be done about which format is better (big party show or small intimate show), that's not the issue here. The issue is SWITCHING the venue after the fact. I would have been perfectly fine with a Civic Center show and frankly it makes more sense. The band has a huge following here and their NYE shows are legendary. The problem is that they sold a product to 2,500 people and are not delivering what they advertised. Maybe they shouldn't have agreed to play Thomas Wolfe in the first place, but that's what they said they were going to do. I am not mad at fans who now have the chance to see them NYE, nor am I trying to keep the Avetts all to myself (as some have said). I just think that once they agree to do something, they should follow through. I paid more money to get Thomas Wolfe tickets than I ever would have to pay for the Civic Center. I appreciate the early-entry privilege, but that does not make it all good. Once they sold the Thomas Wolfe show, they should have just done the show and changed things around next year. I am so proud of them that they can sell out bigger venues and hope they can make all the money in the world for their beautiful music. This is not a question about whether or not they deserve more money. When a band tells me that they are going to play at a certain time and place, I tend to believe them! I just want the boys to learn from this experience and plan ahead next time.

Well, for the complainers - I had my stuff in order - and was unable to get tickets through the presale or the general sale. I was extremely sad. But, unlike other folks - I personally choose not to support scalpers in any way. So, I am THRILLED that I will now get a chance to go. Thanks so much for the venue change!

After all this and that back and forth with the change of venue. I think you should be grateful reguardless.

But in response to SylviaC, I will also be attending the Knox show and hope it does not get changed. I have seen TAB at the Theater before and it was spectacular. Although, if there were to be a change in venue, I couldn't see any other venue offering anything less than the Theater. I would be pleased to see the Avetts anywhere!

First time I saw them, it was summer 2006 in downtown Kingsport, TN for a free show. It was definitely intimate, however, although an outdoor show, the sound wasn't so good. Still thankful for that show, cause good sound or not, I fell in love and have been to 14 shows since. So for all you 1st timers...don't be lead astray by your "all knowing" friends. It'll be worth it, I promise.

"Ain't nothing on this world that's mine. Except the will I found to carry on."

WOOOOOOHOOOOOOOO!!! I was really bummed that we were not going to be able to ring in the new year with you guys again!

And she has got a baby with brand new eyes

Okay, so as a fan from Boston who's too poor to make it down to Asheville, I've got this to say:

A) Calm down. Everyone.
B) The move makes sense, acoustics or no. New Year's Eve isn't really something that rolls around month, and moreover the boys have plenty of shows lined up in that week (the 30th of December through the 3rd, if memory serves) so a second show isn't really an option. So the Civic Center isn't the greatest of venues. It's still the Avetts, it's still New Years with a whole ton of people who really love something that you do too. BE HAPPY, DAMMIT. Besides, this gives so many more people the opportunity to start the new year off really well.
C) And for those who bought tickets when they thought it was going to be at Thomas Wolfe: you get to go in early, scope out (hopefully) a good spot, and again, YOU'RE SEEING THE DAMN AVETT BROTHERS. CHEER UP.
D) As for the whole 'they're greedy/no they're not' thing, this is what these boys do for a living. Without it, they're broke. No more replacement banjo strings. No more music. So let up on the whole debate because for a bunch of strangers who stomp around on stage, you can't really judge something like greed or kindness. Please.

And, on one final note, I just wanted to point out the capacity of both venues:
Thomas Wolfe Auditorium: 2431
Asheville Civic Center: 7654

It's a 60% increase in seating. Just as a note.
But, like I said, I'm not going. Fight it out amongst yourselves, if you must.

yay

Thank you so sosososo much for doing this!

Hey... I'm not trying to pick a fight with you. I understand that you are upset, and if I were in that situation, I probably would be too. I tend to avoid the big shows in favor of smaller settings. When I read you post, I had trouble with this statement:

"Makes me wish I would have scalped my extras for the money, then I would be just like the band! Greedy and selfish!"

Maybe you did not intend to direct it at Scott, Seth, Bob, and Joe, or maybe you did.
I think it is an unfair statement. Greedy and selfish don't describe these guys, at least not in my experience.

It's okay to be mad, but don't project character flaws on others based on your dissapointment. This is really about a decision that you disagree with. As a paying customer, you have a right to be upset. Demand a refund, refuse to every buy another ticket, burn your CD's, do whatever you need to feel vindicated, but don't forget that you are talking about people who made a decision that they felt was right. These people have worked hard for many years, and made a number of sacrafices, to create a product that resonates with this community. Is calling them "greedy and selfish" kind, true, or, necessary? If not, it probably doesn't need to be said.

The Knoxville venue has been moved to the Civic Coliseum! In order to accommodate all our fans we have moved the show at the Tennessee Theatre to the ghetto fabulous Civic Coliseum in the police station parking lot. We would like to thank the fans for making this all possible!

*All previously purchased tickets for the Tennessee Theatre will be honored. Patrons with tickets to the Tennessee Theatre will be given a special early entry opportunity into the Civic Coliseum. Stay tuned for more details!

and I realize that if I do go this will be one hell of a huge NYE party , but I was more looking forward to a small(er) Avett Brothers experience. Don't get me wrong, any show is a great show, but from what everyone's saying about the sound being bad I don't know if it's worth it. Anyone know about refunds? I hate to miss out on a show, especially one I already have tickets for, but $50 for a poor college student is a lot...

One with earth and one with God

I'm sure the NYE show will be a great one, but I will not be attending. I decided to stay an extra night in Knoxville since Asheville was sold out. I hope the Knoxville show will not be moved. I am looking forward to seeing them in the historic Tennessee Theatre.

PUT THE MONEY, INTIMATE VENUE AND FANS ASIDE. THE SOUND IN THE CIVIC CENTER IS AWFUL. IF YOU HAVE NOT BEEN THERE TRUST ME AND OTHERS THAT HAVE BEEN THERE. IT IS NOT MADE FOR AN ACOUSTIC SHOW. NOW IF THE BAND SUITS UP ON FULL ELECTRIC IT HAS A CHANCE OF SOUNDING GOOD. ITS ALL ECHOS AND REVERB IF NOT. I'VE SEEN WIDESPREAD PANIC 6 TIMES, 4 XMAS JAMS, DYLAN, PEARL JAM TO NAME A FEW AT CC. THE DYLAN & ACOUSTIC SETS FROM XMAS JAM WERE BY FAR THE WORST THINGS I'VE HEARD LIVE THERE.... AND I LOVE SOME DYLAN AND BLUEGRASS MUSIC. THE MM&W SHOWS AT THOMAS WOLFE I'VE SEEN MIGHT BE ONE OF THE BEST SOUNDING SHOWS IN THE HISTORY OF MY MUSICAL ADVENTURES. MOVE THE SHOW BACK TO THOMAS WOLFE AND ADD A 2ND NIGHT!

I think it's great that the Boys were able move to a bigger venue and accommodate to more fans! And to all the folks who are hating, I think it's a shame that you are that selfish to hog the band yourself. Even if the move was to make more money, I say good for TAB! They have always been loyal to their fans but they also have to make a living! Keep doing what you do and the fans will continue to follow and you will continue to gain more along the way!

Because you’re so worried about what I’m gonna to think,
Baby I’m worried too"

My lady and I consider NYE to be a big night for music every year...and we thought it would be a nice change of pace to see a show in a small theater in our home state. No hassle/travel and NO BIG CROWDS to deal with.

Thanks for crushing our plans for an intimate evening at the Thomas Wolfe. I hope you're making a lot of cash by moving it to the HORRIBLE sounding Civic Center.

Seriously, it IS the worst sounding music venue in the state. For shame. The funny thing about this whole situation...the Thomas Wolfe is NOT THAT SMALL.

I would think you could at least offer a REASON as to why you're moving it. I'm sure it's all about the fans, right?

And I would like to take one more second to THANK YOU for honoring our tickets to the new and "improved" NYE show. :-/

Extremely disappointed,
zippy in raleigh

I just screamed out loud in the middle of goverment class! i got some weird stares. Oh well! i am shaking due to my excitement! thank you Avetts SO MUCH!!! i am nothing short of thankful. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! Oh my god i am so excited. i really hope i get tickets this time lol

I haven't finished a thing since I started my life, I don't feel much like starting now

I haven't finished a thing since I started my life, I don't feel much like starting now

I just hope more fans speak out like SAMFOH. We have two first timers coming with us that just called and said they are selling there tickets because the sound and intimate appeal of the Civic Center is not what they want to experience for a band they have never seen live.

Anyway to get a refund on tickets for those of us who purchased under the impression the show was at the Thomas Wolfe? Acoustic music in the Civic Center is laughable. Anyone that went to the Xmas Jam where Sam Bush and friends played can vouche for that.

BurninVernon,

I will eat crow IF they sell the Civic Center out. However, they will not. It was a business move from the bands management, plain and simple. Marketing it as a way to get more "fans" in was a good move as it looks like that is what they are doing from anyone who didn't have a ticket already.

As for my "attack the character of people who you don't know". My statement was in no way directed at one person. Its in regards to any member of their organization who voted for this change of venue. I am not alone on this as more and more fans will come out and show you on all of the bands networking outlets. As I started at the beginning of this email, I will extend my deepest apologies to the band, their fans and management team if they pull off the sellout.

I want to start by saying that I am a big fan and have been to many shows (around 20). I love seeing the Avetts in any venue... however the experience varies greatly from one theater to another. I think that the experience of seeing the Avetts at a venue like Thomas Wolfe is much more intimate and special than an arena like the Civic Center. I like the idea of having as many fans as possible at he NYE show, but the simple fact is that the acoustics in the Civic Center suck and the tickets should be cheaper.

I think that people who bought Thomas Wolfe tickets were screwed especially the subset of us who were forced to pay scalped prices because tickets were so hard to get. I tried to buy tickets on both pre-sale dates as well as the general sale and was unable to get them. Based on the fact that the show was going to be in Thomas Wolfe, I paid $100 a ticket for resale. Based on all previous Avett NYE shows, I think this was foreseeable (I have seen some people reselling for up to $300). People would not be paying that much for tickets in the Civic Center.

Again, I am happy to see the Avetts (and all my fellow fans) anywhere, but I think that switching the venue after the fact was either a misguided mistake or an apathetic attempt to make more money. I sincerely hope that this was just not well thought out. I understand wanting to include everyone, but I want to point out that many fans were mislead and I know of a few people that were going to be at their first Avett show and are so mad that they don't want to go anymore. They could have become fans, but were turned off by the seeming lack of respect shown by whoever made this decision. In the future, please just start with a big venue... switching to an arena after selling tickets under the premise of an intimate symphony theater is a gross abuse of fan trust and, frankly, a violation of contract. I will be at this show and I'm sure it will be great, but I can't help but be mad. I can forgive you guys once for making a mistake, but please don't do this to us again. One of the things that makes the Avett experience so unique is the connection between the band and the fans, and I would hate to see that dissolve.

If you knew anything about the guys in the band, you would realise that selfish and greedy are not words that describe them.

Your upset about the venue change, I get that, but to attack the character of people who you don't know, and to assume that you understand their motivation, displays a huge amount of pretentiousness on your part.

This kind of lashing out is common on the internet, so I'm not suprised to see it, but I still don't find it excusable.

Shealady is upset, too, but handles it in a much more appropriate fashion.

shealady, you might not be happy but there were thousands of fans that will be. I'm glad that those who were unable to get tickets because of the absolutely mess that the presale was are now getting a second chance. This is a very fair and good thing they are doing. Sometimes you just have to look at it from someone else's perspective.

NYE

This is excellant news!!!!!

Do not think for a second they are doing this for the fans. They are doing it for the money. The new venue is awful. The Thomas Wolfe is one of the greatest venues in NC and they move it next door to one of the worst. If they truly cared for the fans, those of us that were on top of things to buy tickets to a NYE show at a truly awesome venue would still be going there. Makes me wish I would have scalped my extras for the money, then I would be just like the band! Greedy and selfish!

Although I agree that smaller intimate shows are best...I am so excited that because I got tiks during the first sale I get in early!
Can't wait till NYE!

i am not excited. I spend three days trying to get these tickets. and now they reopen the show... wow

great. :[
cant wait. :[

i like the smaller intimate shows...not the big huge ones.

i cant pretend that i am happy.

No delayed taping? No webcast? What about us West coast fans? I can't end the year with Ryan Seacrest again. PLEASE!

A bigger arena? I can't wait! AND thank you Avetts for letting me get in early - I bought my ticket to the Wolfe Theatre. You really love us fans. I never take that for granted. Love you guys!
