All I can say is... enjoy every year you're there. You'll look back eight years from now and say "Man, I never knew how good I had it." I would give up anything I own to live those four years over...
I think that if you are at least shown the way early (in the form of tabs and chords) it will help develop your ear. I would argue that the next step would be figuring some songs out by ear. Some...
If you're trying to learn the banjo, attempting to transcribe from guitar tabs is not the route to go. I would browse the net for banjo specific tabs. There's also a free download of TablEdit out...
I had it mispronounced the first time I heard about them as well. The Avetts actually joke about the common mispronunciations on Live at the Doubledoor. Its not a common name (at least anywhere I'...
I'm with zimmerman on this as well. As far as session musicians go, I get the feeling that the new ones on the album aren't part of the Avett "inner circle". It feels more to me like they're part...
I'm with you Drew. Few things are truly american made at this point. At least the labor to assemble the thing is in the US. I found one used on Ebay for $350 and snagged the thing. Its got a few...
There's a 1971 model on E-bay right now for $2200, which doesn't seem crazy to me. Vintage 70's Martins and Gibsons in that price range are pretty common. That is defnitely not a learner guitar. I...
Yeah, this is the album I picked up. There were a couple of bands by that name on i-tunes, but that was the only cd I saw out there. Thanks for tuning me in and sorry to hear about your Grandma....
If you're playing guitar (or banjo for that matter), tune it down half a step. They play in standard tuning, but it definitely helps my vocal range. You could also try using a capo.
I'm a fan (and you should be too) because... the Avett's music speaks to me like no other band I've ever experienced. I first heard them during a very relevant period of my life. I was going through a tough time and my friends turned me on to some older records (Live Volume II, The Gleam, Mignonette, and Carolina Jubilee). They were touring their Emotionalism album and were coming within three hours of my hometown. I jumped in the car and headed for Nelsonville, OH. I've never been the same since. I overheard one of the people that worked there saying that it sounded like we were going to stomp through the floor. Their live performance is unreal and the lyrics are so applicable to anybody that's ever loved, lossed, and lived to tell about it.
