Wow, you were one of the members that I that I was thinking about just last night that used to post quite frequently that hadn't been heard from for a long time! Weird...... :ninja:
Yeah man, just took a huge break man. I bought a house so I couldn't travel as much anymore or pay for tickets as easily. I got married and had a child. My last Avett brother's show was so packed and big I realized that going to the shows would never be as small and intimate as they once were. Just kind of bummed me out. Wish we still had those days where you could chill with them after the show.
-The Second Gleam
-Gossip In the Grain by Ray LaMontagne
-Tell Tale Signs- Dylan
-The Sun Is Always Brighter- Joshua James
-The Sparrow & The Crow- William Fitzsimmons
-Fleet Foxes
-Attack & Release by The Black Keys
-Vampire Weekend
-Evil Urges- MY Morning Jacket
-The Midnight Organ Fight- Frightened Rabbit
2008.
Frightened Rabbit, yes. 'The Modern Leper'. Superb song. As were many of the others from The Midnight Organ Flight (a lot of people here adore Mumford And Sons. I think Frightened Rabbit is/are their equal).
Ray Lamontagne. Also yes. 'Let It Be Me' and 'Meg White'. Wonderful.
Avetts, of course.
Fleet Foxes. Perfect album.
I think it was a very good year.
But also, too, don't forget Bon Iver and "Emma, Forever Ago". That was brilliant.
One question. From what list of 'greatest' was an Avett EP listed? Deserved, of course. But I could not find the "award".
Second question, Why has 2008 become pertinent now (2010)? Not that there's anything wrong with that. I love lists.
Lynn,
Look at the dates for a majority of the posts in this topic : it first showed up in 2008 and someone plumbed the depths of the board to bring it back and respond.
This particular award was 88.7 WNCW's annual Top 100 Albums of the Year list, which The Avett Brothers have topped every year since 2007. I doubt Live, Volume 3 will secure them a 4th annual win, but I'd have said the same thing about an EP winning in 08, and I'd have been wrong then, too.
Ah, thanks Blasto.
'Plumbed the depths of the board' is a stunning term.
Well done.
And thanks for the information about 88.7 WNCW, wherever the heck that was. (NC= North Carolina?)
I liked husker/hotel/foxtrot (in all his/her wilco admiration)'s choice of music for the year. Two years later and I still listen daily to Fleet Foxes and Frightened Rabbit music from that year. And The Second Gleam, of course.
No problem, Lynn. WNCW is indeed a radio station in western NC, and they introduced me to the Avetts. Great station with a wide variety of music, and they stream online ( http://www.wncw.org )
Speaking of Wilco, Fleet Foxes, and 2008, did anyone else hear the live cover of "I Shall Be Released" that they recorded and released around election time in 08? It was fantastic. Almost as good as HGTR's version.
Ah 2008...great year for debut albums.... My top 10 that year:
10. The Hold Steady - Stay Positive
9. MMJ - Evil urges
8. Blitzen Trapper - Furr
7. Bonnie Prince Billy - Lie Down In the Light
6. Vampire Weekend - s/t
5. TV On the Radio - Dear Science
4. Bon Iver - For Emma
3. Conor Oberst - s/t
2. Sun Kil Moon - April
1. Fleet Foxes - s/t
Definitely! Nothing can compare to Ghosts of the Great Highway, imo, but April was excellent. I like Admiral Fell Promises a lot but obviously it's a lot more scaled back and less accessible. Love your handle, btw.
I was bored at work one day and made a list of my top 100 favorite albums of last decade. The list sadly was misplaced but I need to try and find it. That could be a fun topic on here. The Avetts I do remember were well represented on that list.
Nice! I think Ghosts would easily top that list for me. Probably Yankee Hotel and Ghosts duking it out for the #1 spot. Emotionalism would be somewhere in the top 20 I'm sure.
albino skunk quest?
I love this place.
I clicked onto the link (Thanks Blasto) to wncw to check it out. And heard Ode To Billie Joe and then a promotion for what sounded like "The Annual Albino Skunk Quest."
If that is legit, I want to go down to NC and see an albino skunk and find out what a 'skunk quest' is. Sounds like a vacation plan to me.
One question, though. What does the "quest" entail? I hope no skunks are injured during the annual quest. Even albino skunks deserve fair treatment. Despite their lack of color.
Oh, and I love wncw. Good choice of music.
Replies for this Board Topic
Another notch in the belt. And there were some big time heavyweights in the top 25
Actually, thats two in a row at WNCW for TAB. Can they go for a three-peat?? I'd take that bet anyday.
I think it's awesome that an EP took the list, too. Take that, full lengths!
I'm just curious, but how is this decided? Is it through fan voting? Is it through total requests through the year?
Each year listeners are asked to submit their Top Ten Albums of the year. The results are compiled into a Top 100.
The last 3 years the Brothers have scored #45, #1, and #1.
Avett is hot baby!

Why the absence?

Oh man I did forget Bob Iver. I thought that came out in 2K7. Yes thats toward the top of the list for 2K8.

Thanks man....agreed about Ghosts of the Highway
