Avetts have changed

my huge appologies, the youtube video I mentioned in the OP is gone. Darn, I'm getting depressed.

If that's what you really think, you've missed something very important. They measure their success very differently.

They still give the high energy, dance-until-you-can't-stand performances that we all know and love, too. I don't know what shows you've seen recently, but I've seen them 7 times so far this year and they still bring it. I have plans to see at least 2 more shows before the year ends. I'm in college; I can't waste my money on something that isn't any good.

And they have to change. It happens naturally, and it's a good thing. I think I heard/read in an interview once that one of their goals is to keep progressing. If they can't do that, they might consider it over. And I can't think of anyone who wants that.

:laugh:you didnt see the show I saw saturday night
at the bijou. I dont see how they could create
more energy without bringing a nuclear reactor
out on stage with em.
the kids are alright.
If this is change, bring it on.
ditto--enjoicash

Boxcar is right. I was with him at the Bijou on Saturday and the boys stomped and rocked to my complete satisfaction.
The only changes i see, for example Joe Kwon, only help to make the shows deeper and more complex.
Keep up the good work boys!

Some lyrics to a song come to mind:

That tied the locals to their podiums,
As they would scream "We know you've changed"

I think as they change and grow as people, their music will inevitably follow suit...that's what it means to stay honest and true!
As for the comment about losing energy, I've seen 4 shows in the last 2 months and I see no shortage...Emotionalism is a masterpiece in my opinion.

you say no energy? two words: Irving Plaza.

wah-wah wah.......move along. I am sure the band loves your attitude towards them.

Hey, I'm glad you guys have seen some good shows recently... but I'm guessing you havent seen the old ones and you have nothing to compare them to. But hey, nobody hopes I'm wrong more than me. Irving Plaza was money, but that was the first Emotionalism date and it seems to have become more pop sounding, love song playing, slow sappy stuff since them.

Nobody else agrees? if not, you are are being blind.

Call me Ray Charles. I like good music and as long as they are playing good music I don't care what their sound is. Every band changes through out the years. If they decide they don't like the sound then they will bring back the old.

Right on Ray Charles.

I was at the 8x10 show you were talking about and many more before that. Nice try though.

Yea! f*** the Avett Brothers for getting bigger! Bring back the days where nobody knew who they were and they didn't have the means to progress! The Avett Brothers aren't the same! Well no s***.

God forbid a band grow and change their sound to reflect the growth. I just don't get the selfish attitudes fans always have about bands they like. I see it in punk music a lot, and it's ridiculous. Maybe you should go ahead and tell the band you expect them to ask for permission before they play or record anymore. And go ahead and consider me blind for loving a band that still makes honest, heartfelt songs and grind their bones to the core for the fans. f*** off.

Maybe I'm just pissed though because the first two posts I see this morning are one from a jackass talking about smoking pot and bringing a sign to a show to ask them if they like weed and another about Sad:sad: THE AVETT BROTHERS AREN'T THE SAME BAND THEY USED TO BE Sad:sad: Or maybe I just have a problem with the fact that both of these posts were first posts and they bring negativity to the board (which seems to be a trend going on lately).

Show me a true musician who never tried to grow and progress as an artist and I’ll show you any one of the thousand people playing the same crappy bars for the last 10-straight years singing the same three songs to a crowd of 20 people who are glad their band never “changed.”

I think it’s pretty selfish to want that from your “favorite band.” I don’t know, I just get a little defensive with this topic; and no doubt you’ve been a fan much longer than I, clar. But here’s the way I look at it; Are you at the same stage in your life you were five years ago? At the same place with your emotions and thoughts? Have you learned more about life and the world around you? Developed new relationships and strived to improve yourself and grow as a person? If the answer is “yes” and we as people all change, then how can you expect someone as talented and passionate and honest as Scott or Seth Avett to remain stagnant in creating their art, which is a true expression of their thoughts and feelings?

I don’t know… I don’t think I have to be a fan for 6 years to be able to say that you missed the point somewhere.

Perfect quote. I've been listing to the band for almost 5 years and I couldn't agree more with everything you said. I think your post is by far the best yet.

ooo, sombody is getting snippy. Hey, I'm glad you were at the 8X10 show because you know what I'm talking about. Obviously the band is changing, that is a fact, everyone on this thread confirming that.

Most of the posts I have read are insightful and correct. Good bands do change, in fact all good bands change. I guess the question is, is the band changing for the better right now? I dont think so but they are still a good band. Hopefully the changes the band undergoes in the future will be to my liking, and all of yours too!

I understand what you’re saying, clar. Whether or not you dig the changes with the band is a matter of opinion, and I can’t knock you for that. I also hope the future changes are something you’re into, and hey the ones you’re talking about might even grow on you.

I also like to think the Avetts are artists as well. Any artist is always evolving, and I think that's what's been going on here. You can't put fences around life, which is why the new album is so dang good.

Would I rather see the Bros. at the Iota with 4 other people? Probably. Will I stop buying their music. Never. Will I see them every time they're near my town? Definitely.

Yep. Things sure have changed.

Scott has a beard now and Seth doesnt.

Bands, flowers, little kids and puppies all change into something else over time. Its inevitable. Personally, I really like the direction the Brothers are going right now. The shows are great, musically and artistically they are growing and exploring more, and of course the fan base will grow as well.

I think the OP should listen to some Beach Boys. the first album, "Surfin Safari" is just that. Then take a good listen to "Pet Sounds". The band grew and expanded their horizons and made beautiful music. Same thing with The Beatles. We all grow, we all change, and we all take different directions.

This type of thing has happened with tons of bands. When a band's sound evolves, as the artists themselves evolve, there is a subsection of fans who won't like it. At that point, you can feel free to enjoy the "good ole days" and don't have to feel obligated to listen anymore. Or, you could listen to the new music, enjoy it less, if that the way you feel, but still appreciate the band for its talent and artistry. We all have bands and artists that we love. We also have periods in that particular career that we like more, or less, than others. You can't fault the band for moving in the direction it feels it should go. The songs are their personal artistic ideas, not your idea of what they should and shouldn't be.

Clar, I never said they aren't changing, but why do you assume that if we are still loving on some Avett music that we must not have been around in the earlier days... You don't like the new direction...point taken.. now go to sleep my man!

::sings::

la la la la la la

(i hear 'em singin')

. . . i say we all close eyes and sing the preceding . . . until quittin' time

if you don't change as an artist then your stuff gets stale and you fall apart... you get tired of it... the band has evolved all while keeping the same roots that they've had all along.

if you could spend time with the guys you would know that they are excited about their sucess, but are still very grounded in their past.

i just saw three shows in a row last week in their alabama run, and i got rocked harder than ever.

That's not just guessing. Your comments were made based on the assumption that we have not seen any shows before this year. I know I haven't been around the longest, but I've been there and so have a lot of other people. With that said, I stand by my earlier comments. And who are you to call the rest of us blind? You shouldn't make stupid assumtions and go around criticizing all of us just because you don't like the new direction.

:wacko:please end this thread.

heres what you do clar. Next time you go to a show, hang around afterwards and tell scott,
seth and bob..and joe the same thing you just
told some of their supporters and see what they
think. Being the people they are, perhaps they
will accomodate you. One thing for certain,
they WILL take the time to listen to you and
talk about the music as long as you wish.
When they stop doing that, MAYBE you'll
have something to b**** about. now, no
more negative waves please, Im still buzzing
from the Bijou. Cool

clar, I agree with your opinion that the music has changed to include more pop influence. I still enjoy the music. In fact, Emotionalism ranks with Mignonette for me. I merely disagree that the energy put forth by the guys has gone down.

Yes "pop" means popular, but it doesn't necessarily mean "bad." And the writing great. There's so much meaningless crap out there, the Avetts are a breath of fresh air. And, obviously, we do like the new music. And, obviously, you don't. We got it. Now please stop being so rude and critical of the people who have responded to your comments. It's done out of a love for this band, and if we all share that (though based on your comments, it can easily be argued that you do not), we should be able to discuss their music without insulting each other. I'm sorry they don't play every song you want in the way you want.

With all due respect, Clar, you started out this thread with a provocative opinion which naturally offended some members. Can I assume that you wanted to begin a dialogue on the topic? Or did you just want the people who agree wholeheartedly with you to respond?
AnnapolisAnn was only trying to give the opposing viewpoint. You insulted her. That was out of line and rude.

Almost didn't comment on this thread since there were so many right on responses already. HourofJealousy, I especially enjoyed your rant.

Clar, if your original post read anything like the quote above, I don't think the response would have been so vehement. It may even have opened an interesting discussion. However, your original and the following posts were pompous and insulting to the band and its fans. We've had many threads here discussing what material we like best and why without calling those who disagree "blind". And wouldn't "deaf" be the more appropriate term?Eye-wink

Bands don't have to change to your liking. Or to mine for that matter. If you like them less, that's your opinion. Your opinion is no more valuable(or less valuable) than mine or anyone else's. Whining about is is just lame though. It's the old classic whining that punk band fans do when their favorite band starts to do well.

I have noticed it. I do like it. In fact I love it. I would not keep going to shows if the band did not grow and change.

There sure have been plenty of post concerned with the band changing, getting too popular, and drawing a new crowd.
I just wonder how many of those complaining have ever bought/burned CD's for friends, family, co-workers, neighbors, etc.? And how many have taken others to their first (usually not last) show?
I'm guilty of both and accept my responsibility for the undesired growth in popularity and changes that the band has undergone. There is no way I could have seen this coming.
Seriously though, isn't it all about spreading some Avett love? Isn't this thing much bigger than any of our individual thoughts and opinions? It would be a shame not to share it, even if it costs us some elbow room at the next show. If you are not a fan of the new stuff, sorry. It seems to be attracting new people though, and soon they will be exploring the old stuff, and buying/burning CD's for their friends, and taking them to shows and this all of course helps the band we claim to love.
If you're just trying to be the cool guy in your social circle to first discover a great, new, under the radar band, then I'd say its time to move on and look for the next one. Stop hating on the Avett's for behaving in a manner that is consistent with their goals of making a living as musicians.

I find it interesting that the person who started this thread has 5 posts total and they are all on this thread. I'm not really sure what that means, but it's interesting.

Also, I find it interesting how much of an ownership people feel they have over a band and how offended they are when things don't suit them.

One of the things I enjoy about TAB and the whole level of company they keep from management to friends is the fact that I genuinely like them and feel that they make thoughful choices about everything associated with what they do. They could have gone in a million different directions with recording, writing, touring, etc... They seem to be on a path of purpose and as a fan i don't have to be informed of that or even understand that, but I feel they do things with some sense of purpose, so if they are changing and evolving as they always have and are sure to continue to do I am happy to be taken along for the ride.

Trust them to keep surprising us and themselves and create an atmosphere for change and growth! Don't demand and shout out what songs you want from them at concerts, turning them in to a jukebox of their own songs. Show Up! Simply show up and be a part of what they are so unselfishly trying to share. When you make things easy and right and good, everybody wins. No, you might not hear "November Blue" everytime you want it, but the possibility of hearing the next song that people will want to hear over and over again is worth showing up for.

I can only imagine how difficult it is to write something that comes from a place of meaning for you, then share it with the world, and then hear people pick it apart. If it's not for you, it's not for you. There's nothing wrong with that, but I hope that for the people that it is right and special for, those people continue to support and nurture this very special group of people whom I believe are in earnest trying to do something that is very dear to them.

Agreed. That show is the second craziest show I've been to of them. First was Morgantown at 123 Pleasant St.

I don't take issue at all with the Bros changing their art and their music etc; it's part of growing as artists and good luck to them. I don't begrudge them that at all.

Now, to the point of the thread...I argue that the Avetts haven't changed, but their music has. That's all fine.

My beef is that Avett fans have changed; ie, there are more rude, inconsiderate jackasses at shows who could care less about this great music.

The change in the fan base is a problem; the bros' artistic growth isn't.

Are you seriously pulling this again? You dislike how a lot of the fans act. We get it. No really...everyone gets it. Stop bringing it up in every discussion, please.

well, friend...I was just clarifying that I think any criticism of the boys in this vein is unjustified and that any perceived "change" of them or their music is only due to the positive of personal and artistic growth.

In other words, my experience at shows has changed due to the fan base, not the bros or the music they make.

why does it perturb you for me to make this distinction? If the shoe don't fit, keep it in the box.

It perturbs me because you seem to have some strange dire need to bring this up in every topic you involve yourself in. The "fan problem" is already being discussed in several other threads. I'm simply suggesting that you keep it there.

fair enough.

thanks for clarifying.

Good points. A good band must change every now and then to bring new stuff to the table. Not everybody likes to hear the same stuff over and over again, even if it is amazing. I saw the Avett Brothers a few years ago at the Albino Skunk Bluegrass Festival in Blue Ridge, SC. Since then I've seen them a few other times, including three times this year and plan on seeing them two or three more times still. Not once have I seen a show with less energy than another...and that includes a couple small shows in which they only played 10 or so songs. It amazes me how they play their hearts out even when they have to be somewhere else later that day to play again.

As far as Emotionalism goes...I absolutely love it. I disagree that the change is for the worse. I'm sorry, but that's strictly your opinion. (to original poster)

How are we being blind? You stated an opinion...and that opinion belongs to you. Not us. Our eyes are open and we LOVE what we see!

if you have a problem with what you hear out of the guys... then take it up with them.

i saw them last wednesday, thursday and friday and saw maybe the three best shows i've ever seen...

actually i think they're better than they were pre-emotionalism, and they continue to get better with every show.

i also talked to scott for a while after the tuscaloosa show, and he said that they already have a number of new songs recorded and have a lot of ideas for more songs. AND I CAN'T WAIT!!!

It's obvious that the boys have slowed way down and don't rock out anymore. Just look at the laid back, underworked snoozers in these pictures

Just look at the complete lack of sweat compared to the "old days"

ok clar, im going to act like your first few posts dont exist and address the "real" questions you had to those of us who have been around for a while (however irrelevant i think that is). I've been going to avett shows for over 3 years now. ive seen them over 25 times. it makes me sick to say those things because i think it looks pompous and pretentious but i say them so that i might measure up to your inconsequential standards.

but now i have to say: i agree with you. the avetts have changed. they're quieter. their newer songs arent as wild and crazy as they were back in the day. but instead of seeing this as bad, i think they've matured. i think they've grown. their songs have more profound feelings woven into them. they're putting more of themselves into each song. where they used to scream songs about running from the fuzz after killing a man, now, they vocalize their moving adoration for their family and harmonize about the difficulties of love. the avetts have matured. and im ok with that.

I was at the 8x10 and thought it was the best performance of theirs I had seen.... until I saw them at the Recher 2 weeks ago. The energy was amazing.

You are right about the 8X10 but I cant agree with the Recher. The Avetts opened up with Pardon Youself and it kicked butt!... it was followed by steadily declining energy and good songs. Didnt you notice all the people talking by the end of the show? It was rude but it was also a telling sign as to the quality of the performance.

whoa! time to go at it! hmm, stupid rant ahead, be warned!

dudes, i love this band. i love a carolina jubilee and i love emotionalism. s***, emotionalism might be my favorite avett bros release.

i went to see sonic youth tonight (mention this only because it's another band who has always done music their own way) and was talking to a friend before it about the avett brothers. read this whole post and thought about it for a while. and i think, if you grew up on independent rock and punk rock there is a certain edge and ethic that will stay with you the rest of your life. if the avett brothers made a top 40 CMT record, i would still probably listen to it and think "holy s*** that's the most punk thing that's come out all year" and maybe it's because they just do things their own way.

i'd love to hear them do an all acoustic mellow full length and just layer on the vocals.

ok s*** i could ramble all night.

.v

ps. roll call, who's going to the austin show? and while i'm at it, check out my new band, www.myspace.com/shakeemups

Yikes what a ballsy thing to say on here man. My pale Enjoicash and myself and some friends, caught both shows this weekend in Ablany and Buffalo. And I do recall telling him that I pulled a muscle in my back Saturday from dancing and stomping my ass off. Both shows were amazing. And so is Emotionalism. It may not be there best album, but it is pretty damb good.

this is for those who say that the boys don't rock anymore...:
