BIRCHMERE!!

BIRCHMERE!!

best avett show ever?!

Replies for this Board Topic

I had a great time last night! They really did tear it up the whole time. I loved the two new songs they did.

I thought the everybodyfields were great also. I am excited about their new cd.

great show by the guys as always.
seemed there were a number of technical difficulties throughout - particularly prior to their electric thrash in PGFC, tremendous effort for such a short bit.
saw mentioned elsewhere reference to DC's "too cool for the music" crowd - this was in full effect where we were standing. felt like the show was just one more stop for pitchers on the friday night preparty scene for many
to each their own ~ for sure i've been the person on the other side before! perhaps even recently Sticking out tongue

I was grateful for another chance to see the boys. Jason and I drove 4 hours straight from work and then 4 hours back right after the show, listening to "Emotionalism" all the way. I know I say this all the time, but I am amazed at their tenacity, hard work, and just all around ability. I just hope they are enjoying all this, b/c they have given me a lot of joy the past few years!

I also loved seeing Everybodyfields again. I really like them. I think the Birchmere is a very cool venue. It was my first time there.

yea, it was my first time too. i really loved it. i also LOVED seeing the everybodyfields again. they're awesome on stage and sam quinn is just so funny.

the BIG technical difficulty of the evening though was that one of scott's banjos just flat out wasnt working. he couldnt get the pickups to work in it, so they had to roll with just one banjo for the whole night. it was awesome to see them work with that. at one point, scott broke a string and he knew there was nothing he could do so he just told seth he was going to have to play a song alone and that's why we got to hear ballad of love and hate (first time ever in front of an audience!!!). gosh. i LOVED that show.

Wow, that is a great setlist. I'm sure it was really amazing! Thanks for the update!

LUCKY!!! I'm so jealous!

Seeing and hearing "The Ballad of Love and Hate" performed for the first time in front of a crowd was a definite highlight in a great show.

I wrote about another of the very cool things that happened during the Birchmere gig in another thread in the Concert Reviews section, but I figured I'd share it again here.

One moment in particular (again) cemented for me how classy the guys are. We were standing next to a family that included two small children. I don't know if the band met these folks beforehand or if they just recognized that there were two small kids stageside as they started the show, but during "Signs," Seth walked off the stage, down the ramp, and right over to those kids for his solo. He even got down on his knees to play for them.

Later, Dane handed them some stuff (I think a string was among the goodies), and I saw Seth sign their t-shirt. Pretty good night for some young Avett fans.

that was an amazing moment. i was lucky to snap a few pics of it too!

Great! Any way to post those pics?

im in the process of setting up a flickr account but ill let yall know

I also posted elsewhere: the chatter in the room did NOTHING to sway my attention from "If I Get Murdered in the City". As far as I was concerned no one but me was in the room listening to that song. So incredibly beautiful.

I was zoned right in to murdered in the city as well...

It was great! I can't wait for the next gleam if that makes it on!

I'm with you there.

"If I Get Murdered in the City" goes right to your soul the first time you hear it and stays with you. Hearing it live was one of those moments when everything was right with the world.

Unbelievable show. Jesus.
I brought a few friends who had just gotten the albums but hadn't seen them, and I watched their eyes bug out all night.
A beautiful show.

i was excited for a second during "if i get murdered in the city" because i thought nobody was going to yell out "you!!" in response to the "i wonder which brother is better" line. unfortunately, some idiot had to express his opinion. didnt come CLOSE to ruining the song though. highlight of the entire show.

Stop zoning in and help me see the stage, Bengine Eye-wink

Sorry! I will do better next time! I promise!

yea... im pretty upset i missed the ballad of love and hate- oh wait... thats the worst song ever and clearly a total downer for any show count it.

wow. im at a loss for words here. ballad of love and hate was DEFINITELY not a downer. i actually like the slow stuff at shows more than the fast, crazy stuff (though i appreciate the avetts' amazing onstange antics just as much as the next guy). i was really excited that we got to hear it, especially for the first time.

"the worst song ever."
That's what you're going with, huh?
First, I guess, why make such a negative statement about one of the band's songs on this board? What's the point?
Second, you seem to have trouble grasping the idea behind the song (shocker.)
It's actually quite sweet and uplifting.
Third...well, just go somewhere else with that negative s*** please. Insulting a song on the band's own website, and not even doing a clever job of it at that. Come on.

troll...

yikes, deped, exaggerate much?

Let me tell you about the worst songs ever...

"She Bangs" by Ricky Martin
"Hangin’ Tough" by New Kids on the Block
"My Heart Will Go On" by Celine Dion
"Your Body is a Wonderland" by John Mayer
aaand anything by Uncle Kracker

When I read this, I thought our friend was trying to be funny. I guess he's just a great fan who happens to hate the music. I don't quite understand the "count it" at the end.

I suffered through an Uncle Kracker set once and totally agree.

Yeah that the Birchmere show last year didn't even come close to comparing with their performance this year.

ive never been at a show with as much pent-up energy as this one. it just felt like the guys were releasing months upon months of tension and stress on the stage for one night and one show. absolutely amazing.

I really liked the Birchmere venue too... especially how it was wider than long, allowing more people to see the stage. And good food in the restaurant!

Was anyone here unfortunate enough to be bothered by the really drunk guy who was at the left front part of the stage? I only saw from a distance the commotion he was causing...

i was at the front right so i didnt deal with him. i think i saw him causing comotion even during the opener.

Yes... I unfortunately had to deal with that guy, and I’m pretty sure I took the brunt of his alcohol-induced assault. I must have had a big target on my back with that guy... he was definitely locked in on me. He kept telling me that we were going to fight. I wasn't going to fight anyone and I tried just turning my back to him but he kept hanging all over me and turning me around. He was super annoying. Luckily he was just as annoying to the gals around me and everyone helped get rid of him. (Thanks to all who had their hand in his removal) After the show I had to get something out of the vehicle and on my way back into the Birchmere I saw the same guy sitting on one of the benches outside with a few cops around him. I'm sure the massive amount of alcohol consumed really let that guy enjoy the show.

... aside from this instance the show was superbly energetic and splendid.

Oh man, I saw him hanging onto you and being incredibly disruptive. Sorry you had to be the one to deal with that! Next time we'll all gang up to take him down :ninja:

gosh yea, im really sorry about that. a stupid drunk can go a long way to ruining a show. it sounds like you handled it pretty well though.

Speaking of Love & Hate, there was a great moment at the Birchmere when Seth sang the line "the clock in the kitchen says two fifty-five" and folks belted out "and the clock in the kitchen is slow"...several of us noticed seth fight back a little bashful grin. i think he was happy that some folks knew about his song. i know it must be such a personal jump to play a song from the heart for a crowd for the first time, or any time, for that matter...i wouldn't really know...but seth seemed to be happy with the reaction. i admire the artistic and emotional risks they take...but i'm so glad they reach so many of us. i always relate to the lyrics and am mesmerized at the imagery.
