Halloween Show at the Ryman
My wife and I drove all the way from Kansas to Nashville for this concert and with the exception of the douche dressed up as Need More Cowbell guy obstructing my view with his big afro, it was worth the drive. I expected the guys to dress up but nothing as clever as The Three Amigos. Truely cool and hilarious. They even played the theme song. This concert rivaled my former #1 fav concert when I seen them live in Columbia, MO. The energy was high, the venue was super cool and I met some pretty cool people including AvettConvert and Avettonic. The mother and daughter combo were nice to talk to after the concert while the wife and I were shivering out by the tour bus trying to get a picture and have them sign our tickets. The group of kids sitting beside us out by the bus were entertaining us also by attempting to sing the entire TAB catalog sounding a bit like the Manson family which was a bit scary.
I'm not die hard enough to have wrote down the entire setlist or remember it, so I'll let someone else. However, the highlights were getting to see "Will You Return" for the first time live (a song I have always wanted to see live) and my wife got to see PGFC finally.
Thanks for listening.

Itr was a good show. unfortunately, Artist Arena double sold my seat, and that was a bit of a pain in the ass. the other person who had the same ticket as me, was kind enough to take another seat.
The folks behind me spilled a whole beer and drowned our things that were stored on the floor. They didnt bother to tell us, so everything we had was soaked
bad first impression of the Ryman. Wondering if I will ever go back...

We drove up from Chattanooga. I brought my 14 year old step-son-to be. I was REALLY excited about this show because I was hoping he'd enjoy it (he's a musician so I thought he'd appreciate their talents).
The venue was smaller than I expected, but gorgeous. My seat was closer than I expected it to be as well. The people I was around were all very cool. There was one obnoxious drunk guy a couple rows back but luckily he only screamed stupid stuff between songs ("They're the BEEEEEES KNEEEEES").
Their costumes were great. You could hear people just cracking up as they went through the 3 Amigos song.
This was the first show that I actually kept a setlist. Wanted Man as the first encore song was AWESOME! I haven't seen that song since 10/02/08 in Athens. And Will You Return is a favorite song of mine too (I might consider myself a pretty little gal with pretty little curls, so I pretend they are singing to me). Salvation song made me tear up.
I was lucky enough to meet emmalou, MITCH-I don't know your name on here, themissingavett, BhamAvettFan, littledeadhead, lthorn (? right), and freedomrequiem (? I'm pretty sure). Mary Ellen-glad I happened to be walking past you at the right time! I think we saw each other at the exact same moment. Thanks for letting me sign the banner. Looking forward to seeing ya'll soon and hope everyone travels safe on the way home.
As for the 14 year old...his exact words "Amazing! That was an awesome first Avett Brothers show and hopefully not the last...sure beats trick-or-treating!" He said he Loved every single song they played. I was really surprised because I thought the slower/lovey songs might not be his thing. He said his faves of the show were Die Die Die (one of the only songs he was familiar with), Perfect Space and..January Wedding. That blew me away.
What 14 year old loves January Wedding? I honestly don't know if I would have at that age. I am reminded daily of how lucky we are to have such a cool kid.
He said the show made him want to go home and learn to play JW on guitar. Also now we have something in common! He also asked "How often do they come to Chattanooga?" I plan on getting him a bunch of their cds (probably for Christmas), and taking him to any show that comes through town. Out of town shows will be a bit more difficult because of school nights etc. But I think that taking a first timer who leaves the show amazed is one of my favorite things. Now I have someone in the household to analyze the Avetts with <3
So, I'm still smiling. Love Halloween, Loved the show, Love the band, Loved their costumes, Loved meeting new friends, Love you all!
Off to watch some Miami football and enjoy this lazy Sunday.
I had issues uploading my pictures, but I will make sure to post it here as soon as I do.
Oh, and I got one of the silk carnations they threw out at the end
Came from Alabama. It was an amazing show. And there was an awesome setlist. I definately want to go back to the Ryman.
It was great meeting you Lisa and glad you and your step-son enjoyed the show. Can't wait to see your pictures! It was an amazing night and I loved the 3 Amigos costumes. I can't wait to watch the video of the opening song. Classic!

Lisa...so great about your step-son!!! My son is 14 and loves the Avetts and January Wedding (and every other song)
They are probably fairly unique for their age, right?? Glad you had a great time.
Thanks to all for your reviews. I love reading them.

The Avetts are a rare talent, timeless yet current, and capable of singing straight to a single soul while broadcasting to the ever-increasing masses.
Hand me down tune was a special treat for me, very under rated song imo.
Those of you who dressed up looked fantastic, in the future just remember that people do have to sit beside/behind you.
It was cool to hear Seth say , "We have been looking forward to this show all year."
So have we, Seth, so have we.
sitrred: we have some very special 14 year olds on our hands! Does your son play guitar or any instrument?
chrisvant: when they played slight figure of speech I definitely was thinking of your "spigor peach" story and almost wrote it on my setlist that way but SFOS was shorter and quicker to write.
bham: nice to meet you too!
to all--FB is perpetually "Loading." Then times out and the pictures don't even upload. I want to share these! I don't know why I'm having such issues. Must be because I'm so anxious to get them out there.
Lisa, yes. He plays guitar, banjo and drums. Wish they could get together sometime!

I agree completely, Erin....I wish I could hear it live sometime...Maybe in 2010

...where nothing is owed, deserved, or expected...and your life doesn't change by the man that's elected...
Linda-ours plays drums, guitar and a little bit of keyboard.
He hadn't done too much with the keyboard in the past month but this morning I could hear him tinkering with it. I think the concert last night inspired him!
It would be great if we lived closer and could get them together for a jam session. Him and a few of his buddies have a band and get together almost every weekend to play. All they'd need is a bass player and a cello and they could do Avett covers...
We are actually looking at getting him a new drum kit for Christmas. His snare broke about 3 months ago but one of his buddies had been given one for free and was kind enough to pass it along since he wasn't using it. Then, a few months ago one of his mounted toms broke and apparently Pearl doesn't make the piece/parts for it to be replaced or repaired. It's going to be a pretty big expense. His current set is one that was given to us for free 2 years ago so we figured that it would be worthwhile to invest in a new one. He plays for hours every day and writes his own music, so it's not like it would be sitting there collecting dust.
Hey Laser Pants, it was a pleasure to meet you and your wife! Best wishes to your little one on the way
This was certainly a memorable show. Met some great people & saw lots of familiar faces as well. It was my last show for awhile (can't make it to the NYE run), and what a great one to end my 2009 Avett Adventures. They even played two songs I hadn't heard live yet -- Living of Love (beautiful, especially when Seth held that note for a long time...*sigh*) & Hand-Me-Down Tune.
Incredible show. Best set list I've ever heard from them! So happy with my ticket upgrades. Can every halloween be an Avett show from now on?... Please? Can't wait for NYE shows
Posted my picture album link in another thread but just in case anyone doesn't read that one..

Great show, awesome setlist. Beautiful venue which was much smaller than I had anticipated. Not sure how much I like the pews but it's different. The Louisville Palace and The Ryman were both on top of video-taping which was unusual; it definitely made it more difficult to get quality vids. And waiting outside by the bus was pretty cold (I was "Bein' A Free Man" for those who were there too); it was disappointing to hear that they weren't even on the bus - they came out the back door, snapped a pic with a friend and then took off in the van....oh well, it builds character.

"I wonder which brother is better, which one our parents love the most...he said I love you and I'm proud of you both in so many different ways."
Such a great show. I may be a bit biased because I live in Nashville, but the Ryman is an amazing place to see a show. Just about every seat in there is a great spot. I've loved them for a while now but haven't been able to see them except only once before at Nashville's Record Store Day at Grimeys in April. So I've been waiting for this for a while. Loved the entire experience. Amazing setlist as well. Im going to remember this one for a while. By the way, the crowd was amazing down on the bottom floor, we were all so into it. I thank all of you.
This was a great show! We drove up from Huntsville, AL. It was my wife's first show and she is completely sold on TAB now. Great setlist too.

Grace and Peace
Living of Love might have been my favorite part of the night... besides of course when the curtain opened and they played the 3 Amigos theme...
But seriously folks... Living Of Love is so beautiful and meaningful to me in so many ways and hold special importance to me. Out of the 25 shows I've seen I think it was only the 3rd time I've heard them play it. Such a beautiful song!!!
Chrisvant... That's an awesome story! Tell your little one I said hello and to keep being cool!

~~~Roll Tide!~~~
Amazing show. My seat's were also closer than I thought they would be too! But there was a pole blocking some of my view since we were off to the side. I got one of the flower's too! So that was grand. And my boyfriend and I found Scott's jacket! And gave it some dude on the bus who was very very happy.
I'm so surprised to find more, Always surprised to find more.
can't wait for December 30th:P
Absolutely Amazing show! Out of the many times I have seen these boys I have to say, this concert was definitely the best that I have ever seen! The setlist was incredible! I loved hearing Living of Love as well. That is a great song and I have never heard that live so that was awesome! The three amigos was fantastic and was of course worth the price of admission just to see that! I thought Head Full of Doubt/Road Full of Promise was very good as well. I brought my fiancee to this show and she loved it! She kinda likes the Avett's but now I think she really loves them after seeing this show! Can't wait to see them again in the future!
best one i've been to all year.
**To the guys behind us (you were in balcony, C10, row 4, seats 1-4) who apparently spilled wine all over our belongings without even acknowledging it and saying you were sorry - please send me your address so I can come collect from your hide.
Wow! What an experience. I have nothing but great things to say about that show! My wife and I drove down from Michigan, hiked in the Smokies for a few days, hung out in Gatlinburg, then came to Nashville for the show. Perfect end to our trip. Perfect set list, perfect venue, perfect Halloween night. Very worth the 9 hour drive back to Grand Rapids, MI. Can't wait to see them again.
Same goes for the asshats behind us (section 14 row B seats 2 and 3) If you are going to have a drink, and you spill it, let the person in front of you know. It's the only decent thing to do!
Hi all,
I was sitting in front of avettconvert, and it was an absolute pleasure to meet her and her family - plus their costumes were amazing! "Eye" and "love" and "ewe"!
Anyway, just wanted to share a couple of videos that I got...
Enjoy! It was a great show. Officially my nineteenth - I said sixteen or seventeen at the show, but I went home and made a list to discover that I'd been underestimating myself, haha.
Didn't go, but seeing all the videos and photos ensures that no matter where the Halloween show is next year, I will certainly be there.
Carolina one day I'll, someday I'll come home.
The show was perfect! The costumes were great & the energy was amazing!
I hope they make the Nashville Halloween show a tradition!
jcm, pleasure to meet you too!!
I love meeting more and more of the Avett Nation at each show.
jcm, you were sitting beside me! Thanks for being such a good show neighbor!
lildeadhead: that pen she uses to keep her setlists? it's a human-finger bone. dipped in the blood of the ones who yell out during "murder in the city". poetic, no?
avettconvert: ya'll were just a few rows in front of me!
I saw your brother and thought "that guy looks SO familiar" but I couldn't place it. Now I know it's from the Box-set opening video "joe: looking hungry as always." Haha, wish I'd remembered then and I would have come said hi! I love meeting Avett Nationers at the shows as well. Can't wait till the next one.
Hahahahhaha, I made it into USA Today - scroll down, i am the one on the right side of the pic with Rod
That's cool Looney! Although, at first I thought you were in the actual publication, not just featured on the website. USA Today is the newspaper the hotel I work at has available for guests so I was gonna try to snatch a whole bunch up. Either way--still exciting!
My wife and I came from Ohio - about a 4 hour drive. Well worth it. And this was our 5th show and they just keeping gettin' better every time.
KAYTELEVAN! YOU'RE FROM SIGNAL MOUNTAIN!?!? this is crazy. because i was one of those kids sitting by the bus attempting to sing the entire TAB catalogue... and after the show, i remember you talking about how you found scott's jacket, and I'M FROM SIGNAL MOUNTAIN TOO! i was with a bunch of people from chattanooga. wow... it's a small world that only gets smaller at an avett brothers concert.
Famous_flower!
hahaha, That's so crazy! Real Small World! Am I going to see you at the Knoxville show?
--
I'm so surprised to find more, Always surprised to find more.
unfortunately not. I'll be going to the Atlanta show instead. you should try and make it down to atlanta on the 1st! i'll be with some of the same people.
I'll be at Knoxville and Atlanta!! Chattanooga represent...
maaaaan i'm so jealous you get to go to both shows. I can't complain though because i saw them in louisville 10/30, then again in nashville 10/31. that ranks among the top 5 best weekends of my life.
I want to go to the Atlanta one, but I don't know if its going to happen. I'll try though! Because that would be the best ever!
I wanted to go to NYE too but presale was crazy and then tickets went on general sale when I had no access to the internet. I've given up on trying to get affordable tickets, because there are SO many people out there who want them. But I'll take 2 out of 3 shows for the New Years run. And I'm going to be in the PIT with my little sister on new years day...that pretty much tops it all!
i bet the pit will be awesome. I'm on row E though so i can't really complain. i don't know how i got so lucky because of the whole presale scuttlebutt. i was in class when the tickets first went on presale so i didn't get online until 30 mins after it had started, but i still got awesome seats. i don't know how i got so lucky! but i'm very happy about it.
