What more is a rainbow, than colors out of reach.
January Wedding was AMAZING. I think Angi will have it and in order when she gets back to a computer, I think she was putting them up on Twitter as they were played.
That setlist above (in order or not) looks hot! (Almost) all of my faves!
Does anyone have a review of the overall show (venue, energy, how the brothers played and sounded, etc..)?
I tried to get there, but just couldn't make it. So, I'd love to hear what show-goers had to say...
Many thanks.

more importantly, did anyone get any video?!

Yes. Video.

Setlist, yes.
Review, yes.
Video, yes.
Patience...it'll come. I'm driving home today & will post a thorough review tonite.
If you follow me on Twitter, you can see my tweet-by-tweet review of the show. I took one new fan, and we were about halfway into the first song when she looked at me and said "Angi, I'm a BELIEVER!!!"
I know Rick Rubin was there last night, pretty sure Dolph was, too.
The setlist was great, but I couldn't help but feel the atmosphere was off and they raced through the first several songs. They were obviously pumped up and going strong, but that oh-so-important connection with the audience was not there, in my opinion.
Why? Well, it was L.A., for one (sorry L.A.). Secondly, they felt sooo far away on that big stage, with an empty orchestra pit between them and the first row (like a lowered pit). And it was a seated show. Plenty of folks were up singing & dancing along, and then, thankfully, sat back down to really listen to the slower songs.
The crowd wasn't bad, per se, just different. It felt...just not the same as the shows elsewhere.
Now, I say all that after a hell of a run in May, and the fortune to have attended shows in the past with more folks who really got into the show. 110%. So I do believe I'm quite spoiled.
Still, a little less than halfway through, something did change in their energy, and they were more into it...or the crowd was. (?)
I'll post more later and re-order that setlist, too.
There were several other board members present. HeyKyle, thepinckpunk (rocking a homemade Team Crawford tee!), alyx & avettconvert, and I ran into new boardie spikethecat in the front row, too.
(That's your cue to post your own reviews, buddies!!!)
For now, I'm hitting the road. Have a great day.
Thanks so much Angi. I would love to hear more! Glad you made the show. Glad you got that Jan. Wedding debut.

I attended the Orpheum show having never seen nor heard of this band. I was immediately astounded by the audience's instant reaction to the bands presence on stage and realized I have been missing something special for some time now.
This is one true 'solid to the core' group of artists; honest and passionate lyrics set to both hard driving, foot stomping romps as well as sensitive and emotional musicianship.
L.A. is always a hard venue for almost any performer; rarely is 100% of an audience ever wholly there for the artist- which is truly sad. My take is that the band handled it all reasonably well.
For a newbie, I thought the show was a blast- not perfect, but a hell of a lot of fun.
Peace
welcome, extratallsoapbox. I always love hearing the perspective of someone hearing them for the first time. I'm glad you enjoyed the night. The energy may have been off a little considering the crowd, but having nothing to compare it to, I would imagine it was still more energetic and personal than most live acts. Honest and true, those fellas! Through and through.
Now, don't they have a bit of a break? They deserve it and I hope they get renewed with rest and love from their families.
Angi, thanks for your tweets. You know we were eating it up. Look forward to more when you get the time!
I also saw a tweet where someone said RRubin was dancing and lovin' it. Cool!!

Braxton: " Would you like to purchase the super delux 8-Track tape edition featuring a twelve min recording of scott humming to himself in the car?....Yes please."

Well now I don't want to post it at all
eta: Funny that Mao posted just as I was logging on to post the list.
Orpheum Theatre, Los Angeles, CA
September 5, 2009
This is a play-by-play as I noted it via Twitter. Hope it's not too lengthy/annoying...it was wonderful to hear so many songs from the new album.
1) I Would Be Sad The music started, THEN the curtain came up to reveal the Scott's in his huge feathery cowboy hat with Bob & Seth also in cowboy casual attire (no Joe Kwon yet)
2) Paranoia in Bb Major (still just SSB)
I spot Dolph in the wings with Dane, & before the song 3, out comes Joe Kwon lookin' dapper as ever!
Seth announces they're about to play a new song for the 1st time. Crowd sits down and LISTENS.
3) January Wedding (1st time played live, ever
!!!)
Can't believe how many people are singing along to this and exchanging glances with friends. I sit gape-jawed.
4) Distraction #74 - featuring Joe & Bob rocking out back-to-back crazy-style!
And then Scott heads to the keys...
5) Head Full of Doubt, Road Full of Promise = "Decide what to be and go be it" - sigh...
6) Till the End of the World Rolls 'Round total hoedown style
7) At The Beach
8 ) Ballad of Love and Hate
(Seth solo - intensely quiet w/ lots of respect from the crowd for this one. who all sat back down again)
For the second time I think to myself 'they are really racing thru this set' Also despite many folks up dancing & singing along, the theatre feels big tonight & the band seems so far away...it's a notable difference from what I'm used to.
9) Salina (near the end, the teardrop backdrop floats up to reveal the bridge backdrop)
10) I & Love & You
11) Colorshow
12) More Of You
"I get your numberrr!"
13) Denouncing November Blue "I drove my Jag-you-ar around the world..."
14) 10,000 Words (1st time played live?!? * this was THE highlight for me, & probably "most people" too. The chorus hits hard, and it really seemed like they were trying to make a statement with this song. They were literally singing their lives up there.")
15) Will You Return (ok, now even the people too-cool-to-do-so are up and into it)
16) Perfect Space
17) Go To Sleep
18) Murder In The City (Scott solo - my daughter, her mother)
19) Kick Drum Heart "this will be our last song"
*encore*
20) Slight Figure of Speech (slower than on the single...awesome to see live, but it didn't seem to fit in with the rest of the set...or is that just because no one knows it yet?)
21) I Killed Sally's Lover
Wows! Thanks. I'm jealous. And happy (for you all).

Here's some video from LA. I was in the front near the bass speaker which was cranked up high and created a large amount of reverb for me... or perhaps I was just too close.
Was anyone else's recordings affected by this? Here's what I've uploaded so far. Good to meet other fans at the show.
Ballad of Love and Hate
Murder in the City
January Wedding - Removed for now
Thank you thank you for sharing! Nice work!

Sully,
You seem new enough around here to not know, but the Avett Brothers prefer that unreleased songs not be posted on YouTube. Not that we don't appreciate your kindness and effort, it just goes against the band's wishes to post that January Wedding video.
Blasto - Thanks for the heads up... I wasn't aware of that, but it does make sense. I'll take it down immediately.
Sully, sent you a PM.
Nice work with the setlist Angi. Good stuff!
We started with a burrito off a truck and then visited the beautiful Broadway Bar. What an awesome bar! We played the replacements and x on the juke box, and then entered the Orpheum. Really nice seats, nice neighbors (hi Kyle and Michelle!) and Sally Ford was surprised at the standing ovation we all gave them at the end.
The brothers blew us away. We couldn't possibly get enough, our songlist wishlist was probably three hours long, but they managed to kill us along the way with:
January Wedding -- the most beautiful song. I haven't heard the studio recording yet but I will never hear it another way. Seth said he was sorry for having to play songs off the new album that we didn't know. The audience reacted so warmly, he glowed and I think that's when the mood changed that Angi described earlier. They were totally surprised at how much the audience knew their new songs.
St. Joseph's, Distraction, Kick Drum, Ballad were my favorites.
We're already looking at the schedule, finding the next concert we can go to. New York, quit calling, New York leave me be.
Thanks for letting us sign the banner, angi!
~spike~
They said I hope that you will never change
I went and cut my hair
They said don't take your business to the big time
I bought us tickets there
St Joseph's?!?
Did I faint after they played one of those new songs and somehow miss it?
Great surprise meeting you, spike. Front row & everything
Thank YOU for signing it!
(But I was quite happy with my seats in the 4th row...I was more center than them. But I would rather have sat in the back row if I could have been with a crew of people who were all super loving it and singin along, too)
Does anyone else think that maybe they played those 2 new songs for Rick Rubin since he was in the audience? Favorites of his, maybe?
Oopsy, I'm silly! I meant to say Murder In the City, of course, my hubby got a nice video of that one and we've been watching it obsessively. Wishful thinking maybe?
~spike~
i was thinking rick rubin had something to do with it, but not because they're his favorites...perhaps they just wanted to play as much of the new album as possible for him? and they gotta bring out the ones they hadn't played at some point soon anyway, it might as well be in the presence of the man that possibly knows the songs best.
but what do i know, i'm just the girl lusting after the setlist in her old hometown from 2500 miles away.
Well, the fact that Seth said "We're sorry, but we HAVE to play a couple songs you guys have never heard before" led me to believe they were specifically requested by someone in attendance. But I realize that's a stretch.
because they had to. because they love you.
Blasto, please don't quote my memory directly, that's obviously flawed. Does anyone else remember more accurately what Seth said? It was something like 'we're a little nervous playing the new songs you don't know yet,' or something like that. It was endearing, and his reaction to the crowd's cheers was definitely a glow. I'm sure playing a new song for the first time is a little nerve-wracking for any band, then you add in the LA 'industry' people in the audience, but they hit it out of the park, IMHO.
Set list was awesome but my husband was bummed about no PG songs! What's that about?
~spike~
I'm pretty sure I have one of his comments to that effect on video. I'll check tonight.
The way I remember it is, as spike just mentioned...it wasn't so much a "we HAVE to" as a humble introduction and advance apology in case they sucked (ha) "it can be hard playing some of these newer songs, but we'd sure love to play one for ya." - that was before January Wedding. The crowd definitely received it warmly and I think that really helped the show liven up and improve as it went on.
The guys came out loud and proud, and maybe the racing through it feeling I got was due to their nerves, and not, as I thought initially, an attempt to just get it over with since it was their last show of the tour.
i don't remember his saying that. but its definitely possible. it was cool seeing rick. my girlfriend said, hey that guy looks famous. ha ha.
i like the song by song breakdown.
"but lord, you guys got half of the new album!! that is dang special."
my thoughts EXACTLY!
so happy for you all, what a great setlist! angi dear-i really do miss you. it's been far too long since i've seen you and far too long since we've been to a TAB show together! i guess first, i will wait anxiously for the 19th to get here to see them in Tally and then my sights will turn to NYE where i will get to see old friends and meet some new!
i always say how fast time goes, but for some reason when the anticipation of an avett show is on the horizon, all of a sudden it's like the earth slows on its axis!
